Dustbin dupes instead of closing them

So I’m suggesting that instead of closing duplicate topics, st dustbins them. The thing is, I use “site:scratch.mit.edu/discuss” to find dupes, but a lot of times, other dupes of the original topic I’m trying to find clog up the results which is annoying.
And dupes overall clog up the forums, so it’s annoying

Just curious, how many people use site:scratch.mit.edu/discuss to find dupes? Also, dupes are allowed in some forums, like QaS. People just don't know that is was a duplicate, nothing wrong with making a mistake.

Full support. All the valid arguments on the dupe can just be re-posted on the original thread.

I don’t know. But I don’t use ocular cause scratchdb is broken.

And this will only apply to forums that close dupes already, obviously. And dustbinning dupes isn’t punishing the person who made the dupe, I never said there’s any thing wrong with making a dupe by accident, they just clog up the forums so it’d be nice if they get dustbinned instead of closed.

New forumers won't be able to learn that their topic was a duplicate and would ask in QaS. That may not sound like a problem, but you are also not directing the conversation to the original.

Just because you wanna look for duplicates doesn't mean it should come at the price of confusing new forumers.

What if there was insightful discussion in the dupe, then if dusted, then cannot be replicated in the original? Finding the original isn't hard, you just search for the topic with the most posts / people link dupes / this

Well people will already point out the dupe before it’s dustbinned therefore the scratcher will know.

That's assuming OP had time to view the topic before it got dustbinned - People like me wouldn't have that much free time, but that's just me I guess

Maybe this is a little unrealistic but what if an ST member closes it, and only dustbins it after a set amount of time, and they can have a queue for closed dupes to dustbin later. They manually add it to the queue when they close it.

Also, I feel like thread creators should have the right to see their own threads, dupe or not.

If it’s implemented, after a short amount of time I’m sure users will get used to it and know to add the posts to the original topic before it’s dustbinned. Simple.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure topics would show up on there regardless of whether or not the topic is dustbinned, (I'm pretty sure the link stays and redirects you to the dustbin) so this wouldn't really solve anything.

It doesn’t get indexed if its dustbinned i believe

Still doesn't resolve the problem for people who might not have that much time.

If they keep track AND MEMORIZE their points and they haven't been made in the original topic.

That's highly circumstancial.

If there is a lot of discussion in the topic, it will get merged with the original, if this were implemented, merges would become rare, because most merge requests are sent after the topic is closed. Merges are intended to fix the issue of points made in the duplicate. If this were implemented, the fix intended to fix that would not function as efficiently.

Merges are made when the newer topic is still open. And tbh, merges are already rare in the start.

If a ST member needs to refer to dustbinned topics unrelated to dupes, it will be harder to do so.
