Sorry to necropost(???), but I found a marvelous proof that 1 = 500 and luckily this forum post is not too small to contain it.
  • 10 = dix (French)
  • 509 = DIX (Roman numerals)
  • By transitivity, 10 = 509
  • Subtract 9 from both sides.
And you get 1 = 500! Amazing!
