For example: Silvershimmer43 is one of the popular scratchers and reached 2000+ Followers. How would I feel if she will never know again where 3000+ is? Seriously, most Scratchers just go on RPGs and make art, and if this continues, there will be a downfall leading to the end.

I like the update ONLY for the comments due to people posting SPAM on people's profiles, but that is just it. Keep following and comment numbers off and leave Followers happy.

In other words, I'll leave it to you. Give us happiness or give us failure!

Look: None of the arguments against this are any good. they might sound good but to be honest, they're kinda laughable. If there are no numbers, it makes all of those names mean a lot more than a 100 or however many you have. If you really want to know how many followers you have, you should need to acknowledge every single person who likes your work rather than seeing a couple of icons and a number.

Let me ask you this: If you followed someone with 1000 followers, would you like to be seen as one small step to the next milestone of that scratcher in which they thank “you” but are really thanking a few digit on a colorful display of lights commonly known as a monitor, or would you like to be seen as a real person who that scratcher needs to specifically look at in order to figure out how many people appreciate what they do?
I know my answer.

LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL xD xD xD xD xD xD
This is what people do when they don't have a better argument but they still want to win. They try to make the opponent look bad. In this case, you have attempted this by acting like my points are funny because they are so bad (which they are not). This is actually a tactic used by bullies to gather support. Not saying you are one, just pointing out that saying what you replied isn't a very good thing to do.
Says the person using bold and insulting everybody else's opinion. xP
Btw I got rid of the bold. It makes it look like you're trying to make your statement more important than everybody else's.

I have a perfectly fine argument. Unfortunately, you are treating your own opinion as fact, and ignoring what everybody else has to say. This isn't lack to make a fine argument, this is lack of recognizing a good argument. Just because it doesn't matter to you doesn't mean it doesn't matter to somebody else. To me, comment counts and emphasized follow numbers matter. I've explained why - you can't really tell me that my opinion is wrong. Perhaps it is…in your opinion.

And…I'm actually not trying to gain support with that statement. I already have plenty of it, I don't need more. I do need people to stop calling my posts “laughable” though.
He's differentiating his post from your post which seemed to be randomly laughing. You may have a fine opinion, but you have never been able to back it up soundly so far besides saying it makes you feel good and Scratch is somewhat focused on it, which the Scratch developers THEMSELVES have proven against with this update.

Basically, we're supported by the ST. Your opinion isn't.
This update probably won't revert, for obvious (imo) reasons.

Updates to Following and Followers

Let me just weigh in here. I haven't the time to read every post, but I definitely support the decision to remove this followers thing (even back when I was a beta tester).

Quantifying fame is always a bad idea because I don't think many users on this site are of the age to be able to carry themselves responsably with fame. Throughout my time on the site, I've seen people try to use it as leverage, I've seen people interpret popularity to the point of narcissism, and I'm very uncomfortable when people correlate their own self-worth as a programmer with the amount of followers they garner (or feel like they have ‘earned’ - which is problematic in itself).

To be totally honest the content you produce should have nothing to do with your fanbase and everything to do with a desire to learn. Too many times I've seen users here try to carry themselves as though they are a small business. While this is admittedly preparation for the ‘real world’, it distracts from the ultimate goals of the site (imagine, program, share) by turning everything into competition - who can get the most views, who can remix the most, who gets the most followers, who can add the most projects, etc.

While some users apparently oppose this because they feel they have a ‘right’ to things, I disagree with this mentality entirely. On Scratch, you play by the Scratch Team's rules because they work their butts off to provide you with a clean website and a powerful programming language for free. You don't get to ban things you don't like, you don't argue about things as though there's some sort of grassroots political campaign for human rights going on.

I entirely agree with this decision.

Updates to Following and Followers

Hey everyone,

You might notice your profile page looks a little bit different. Profile pages no longer display the number of Followers and Following. (You can still view this information by clicking the ‘View All’ button on the Followers / Following panel.) The number of profile comments are no longer displayed too.

Why do this? We want to make sure people see someone’s projects, studios, and connections and not focus too much on the numbers. After all, it doesn’t matter if you have 10 followers or 10,000. Scratch is a place for creating, collaborating, and supporting fellow Scratchers.

The Scratch Mentors put together an awesome remix project about “What is the meaning of followers?” http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/25999074/ Check it out and see how other Scratchers think about followers! Feel free to share your thoughts too!

I would rather to be able to see the numbers, please give them back I want to know how many comments are on my profile please.

Also, so I don't have to quote your post, Superdoggy, I'll say this…
Asking whether someone listened to your argument is a bad debating technique, as they pretty obviously have had to read it
Being able to see your follower count pretty naturally makes you feel good, even if you deny it. Is there a reason BESIDES it making you feel good that you want to bring it back? Don't say that you have the “right” to, as first, you have no rights here besides what the ST gives you, and second, that's a instrumental goal, not an intrinsic goal. It's instrumental in making you feel good

Oops.

I was in a bit of a rush when I posted that. Ouch. Should've read it over again.

That post…well…why don't I delete it. xP so I did.

Now, what I meant to say was that since I've been actively participating in the site and putting lots of work into my projects, I feel that I should be able to see my follower count at-a-glance, or even my profile comment number at all.

I'd like to point out, that while the Scratch Team does work extremely hard to keep things running (Thanks!) they benefit from active hard-working users too. On their Scratch statistics page, they show the number of users and projects, and I'm guessing that they're quite proud of it. And should be, as they created a wonderful programming language that is a perfect tool for creating amazing things.

However, what would the site be without any projects? Without any users? With “zero” followers? Would anybody join a site that had been abandoned a year ago, with no active users and no community?

So the users do contribute too. They work hard too. So you've got to imagine that it would be disappointing for certain users when the Scratch Team removes certain (helpful) numbers because they don't think that we're being responsible enough for them. (This is not a Straw Man, Lightnin. xD they were removed because you thought they were being mistreated)

So why can't some famous users (who have obviously worked very hard to obtain their fame) be able to have their follow count “on display” for others to see? Often enough we've earned them.

Those who quit Scratch aren't always wrong. Some move on, of course, but others quit when they think that something is outweighing all of the hard work that the ST put into this wonderful programming tool. Sometimes it's a rule, or a ban, or a troll. Sometimes it's agenda-pushing *cough cough*. But while this is an amazing tool and an amazing site and a wonderful community, sometimes you just have to say that “it's too socialist” or “there's something wrong”. If these stack up enough and the Scratch Team doesn't listen to the community, sadly, people are going to leave.

Speaking of which, somebody mentioned a “Scratch Walkout”. I won't say who, and it was mostly in the form of a joke, but I'm just putting it out there to show that I'm not making things up.

If you need numbers to represent your input to this site I suggest you rethink your priorities. Many users have been comitted to this site since before following and profile comments existed and I don't think people who are honestly here to learn will leave because of these numbers being removed.

I don't know if you read what I wrote before, but please realize that this is not a political campaign, so let's stop throwing around words like ‘socialist’ or ‘walkout’. If you walk out, the rest of us will walk on and be much more peaceful without users raising a ruckus about insignificant things. If many people cannot handle the “followers” being visible, then it doesn't matter if there exist people who really are responsable, we have to get rid of it for the good of the community.

I am also uncomfortable with how you insist that famous users have ‘earned’ their fame and deserve to be able to see it. The thing is, becoming famous should not be the goal. I don't care how many people follow me, and neither should anybody else. Programming as well as you can, receiving input from the community about your programs, and learning as a result is what is important. I don't need a number to tell me that.

If you don't agree with the scratch team and feel like you could do better, go ahead and make your own drag and drop programming language where the follower count is shown. If you aren't going to do that, then don't complain.

Nah, I'm not going to be participating in any “walkout”. I did come here to learn, but I also came here to share my programs.

Also, unfortunately, when I share a project, I don't get much criticism. Often if I do, it's pointless trolling like “this is horrid” or “boo”. I rarely get constructive criticism, except from users like you or epninja who put lots of effort into comments. ;D

So I've “learned to learn by myself” and study others' scripting rather than being told or criticized. Which has lead me to make projects more for the hope of sharing them with others than anything else. (I do still learn with almost every project though)

That doesn't add to the conversation. That's just trolling.

If I don't agree with the Scratch Team, I'll just use an un-regulated programming language like C#.
