Updates to Following and Followers

This is simply the best update that could've happened on this website.

Thank you, Scratch Team, now hopefully people will stop treating their followers as mere numbers.

Dear Scratch Team,
Please do not take this message personally. I have tried to get my point across by posting my honest opinion on this issue. I am sorry for the fact that it is slightly “undiplomatic”, but I did not want to sugarcoat the issue and miss the point of the problem entirely. I can edit any part of this post that you find offensive. Thank you for reading.

This update is bad for many reasons:

1. I've spent hours and hours for 2 years and 7 months on making high quality projects and many friends. Are you saying that I don't deserve to see how many comments I've gotten, or how many friends I have at a glance? You might as well make this a 100% socialist Scratch and remove the love-its and favorites too. And while you're at it you could get rid of the front page, and you could get rid of the views, and then you could make each page only load one comment at a time, just so that others wouldn't feel sad when they saw a project with more comments then theirs…

No. I mean no, seriously. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but really? I've earned every last follower fair and square. If anybody thinks otherwise they can unfollow me now. Because if I can't even see how many comments my projects have, I think I'll quit and bring my programming talents elsewhere. At some point you just have to accept the fact that it doesn't have to be equal.

2. If it really is all about programming, why do you heed the complaints of Scratchers who badger you about Add Everything studios, or “Unfairness”. Like seriously, does it really matter if your project is in a few studios? So you removed the manager and project count from studios. Great, now if I ever want to see how many projects I have in one of my perfectly legitimate studios, I have to count them by hand! That's a huge waste of time! Is Scratch slowly being overtaken by a Scratch Team who regulates everything a user does and says?

3. It doesn't even do anything. Follow for follows will still continue. In fact, I bet that if I offered free F4Fs on this thread, I'd get lots of takers. Besides, if the number doesn't matter, who cares if somebody gets a few non-legitimate follows? Spam isn't destructive or anything, just annoying. That's why I allow it on my profile, just to show that it isn't that bad. In fact, anybody that is reading this thread, FEEL FREE TO SPAM ALL YOU WANT ON MY PROFILE. (Within reason, of course.) I will look at anything you post, if I can.

————————————————————————————-A very, very, very disappointed and upset Superdoggy.

Honestly, I rather have a profile filled up with “follow for follow” comments rather than no comments at all

Same here. Even though I'd probably say no to every single one, unless it was from a Scratcher who I thought was good at making projects, I'd rather have that instead of thinking that I'm rotting away in a dark corner and nobody cares about my follow.

Updates to Following and Followers

This is a change. I don't know how much it will change anything, but I hope it changes lots. I have great hope about the no follower count, but I don't get the no comment count. AFAIK there is no bragging about comments.

I'm uncertain about the follower count… It's nice to see how many friends one has at a glance… But the comments keeps me organized. I don't like that part of the update…

I strongly disagree with that. I've never treated my followers as pure numbers. Every time I get a follower, I get happier because it means that somebody liked my worked-on-hard projects enough to follow me.

Also, yay! Now people will stop treating followers like “cookie clicker”. Hopefully.

Random factoid: 0.0056% of the world's population uses scratch!

Edit: Oh, didn't see that comment counts are also removed. Not sure I like that. Overall, still a good update, but I kind of think the comment counts were more helpful than bad.

Then just check your messages, or take a glance at the follower section to see if there's someone new in there.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! There are a lot of thoughts going on here. Tough to know where to start :]

In stepping back: What we're talking about is a change to move the number of Followers from the profile page to the View All page. Which is one click deeper. I know we might lose sight of this when chatting :]

I'm interested to hear more about the ‘at a glance’ aspect of viewing the number of followers? Because I think Scratcher's both new and old make wonderful projects. So, to hear Scratcher's might be judged on the number of followers they have speaks to reason why this changed was put into place.

I like to know when people are unfollowing, too! And I see that you're constantly updating your post, making it more controversial each time. Is that targeted at me? ;/

I am more likely to follow somebody if they have fewer followers, because I feel that they deserve it more.

Same concept as this: might as well take out all of the icons, so somebody doesn't get judged on how good of an icon they have. Oh, and the project thumbnails, since every project should get the same number of views regardless of quality.

NO! That's ridiculous.

Is Scratch going to really become so socialist that good Scratchers are rewarded with absolutely nothing?

If I'm judged on how many followers I have, that's good. Truth is, Followers = Quality. Can you find a single Scratcher with 1000 followers with low quality projects? Can you find a Scratcher with under 10 followers with projects as good as Griffpatch's?

So rather than hiding the stats from everybody, could we instead just stop complaining about others' fame? Like really, I don't mind if somebody gets 2038493874928739487239847 followers from follow for follow. It doesn't effect me, does it? xP

People really shouldn't mind when someone unfollows them. If you change your project style, for example, but some people end up disliking the new content, then it's their loss.

And I was only adding an information when I edited that post.

lego_ninja wrote:

You said it doesn't matter between 10 or 10000 followers. Actually it does. I'm more willing to check out a 10000 follower scratcher than a 10 follower scratcher. That might sound mean but it makes sense if your just looking for a really high quality game on the go.
So you rely on quantity more than quality itself?

If you wish to find a high quality game, then check the person's projects.

Same concept, if I'm looking through a bunch of Scratchers to find a good game on the go, It would be VERY annoying to have to hit the view button and then move on the the next scratcher. (if you read my previous comments, you will know what I mean)

Simply, because we're not Cybermen or Borg.

Now, more complicated. God made us (or at least I believe) with our own special talents. Why reduce our talents to the lowest possible level?

Updates to Following and Followers

Although Follower - Project Quality ratio isn't 100% always true, it is a good way to finding users with good projects. I mean thinking about it, If you're on scratch just to play games or watch animations, and you're looking for some high quality projects of that type, wouldn't finding a scratcher with a lot of followers be a good start? Pressing the view all button is a bit too annoying if you are trying to search for many scratchers
