Updates to Following and Followers

Well see, sometimes I just want to find a user with really good high quality games when I'm bored, depressed, or needs some relaxing time. I usually check the follower count to know how good the user is. If the user has lots of followers, that usually indicates his games are good and I check out the projects. That might seem biased but it really helps to find good projects. I still check out lower quality projects and low-follow scratchers to encourage them. I'm not trying to discourage others, I'm just saying that some scratchers make better projects than others and follower count helps me to find them.

Updates to Following and Followers

Hi there! I love some of the new additions you and the other members made to Scratch, but I think how you changed the followers and following was a bit much. Just my opinion! I find that Scratch is better when you know that more people are appreciating your work, and it puts a smile on my face. I was really sad when I saw the change, and if you could change it back, it would make me overjoyed. Have a wonderful day!

Hmm. There are Cons and Pros, but I see why you would remove them.

You said it doesn't matter between 10 or 10000 followers. Actually it does. I'm more willing to check out a 10000 follower scratcher than a 10 follower scratcher. That might sound mean but it makes sense if your just looking for a really high quality game on the go.

You might think that taking away the follow number will encourage people to make better projects. However, seeing the number of followers I have makes me PUMPED to make better projects. Making me press a button to get me pumped just gets really annoying.
I agree.

Totally agreed here. I forgot to put that in my list of reasons.

Oh, i see :3 I thought it was a glitch at first

I have to say… I'm not a huge fan of this update. I'm definitely not the fame-trade type; I really do support community and friendships on Scratch.
What I don't get is why the number of studios you curate or the numbers of projects you've shared are more important than the number of follows you have. There are plenty of Scratchers that have been on the site for, say, 2 years. They may have shared 700 projects and they may have shared 20. But those twenty projects have their heart and soul put into them- they are projects with crazily complicated scripting (for Scratch, anyway), have beautiful graphics, are perfectly understandable, and work well. So why does that matter, and yet the number of people who see you as an inspiration does not? I'm not saying that people should have a competition over who can get the most followers, because I don't believe in that. But I do believe that you can set goals for yourself- to be a better person. When you really take part in the community and talk to people, helping form the community as the wonderful place it is, that is how you really get your followers.
Followers should be a measurement of growth, not of fame. It should be of how many people really think that you are amazing- how many people you want to get updates on.
Disclaimer: This is merely my opinion. Feel free to argue politely or anything, but please don't get mad or rant at me. :3

In the future, I'd recommend stating a reason for your disagreement so you can have a healthy discussion about it rather than just saying that you don't like it

I partially agree. I 100% believe that there are undiscovered amazing Scratchers out there that we should try and to see their wonderful projects! But if someone has 2000 followers, it means that that many people love their projects and think that they're a good person. So I think it would be worth it to look at both ends of the spectrum.

So yeah, projects matter, but to me, it's really who they are as a person. Think of a follow as a reward, not just something that people are tossing out there.
I saw in the Mentors' project that they were saying how much a follow should mean… if that's the case, don't you want to see those meaningful people who really look up to you? Isn't it fair to want to see others', too? It isn't a race. It's just curiosity.

My rambling has gone all over the place and I'm not really sure whether I agree with myself at this point XD Sorry :3

Edit: Wait a second, why are the comment numbers gone? O.o This has never really been part of the fame idea before. Comments are feedback and helpful criticism and chatting, for crying out loud. I'm sorry, I thoroughly don't understand that. (I don't disagree, I just don't understand the reasoning.)

It is mean. Just cuz someone has 10 followers doesn't mean they are a bad quality scratcher. It just means that they are unknown.

True… Scratch ISN'T all about followers. Why did you put that feature in anyway when eventually you were going to take it off?

Of course I also have to calculate how long they've been on Scratch. If a user has been on here for 4 years and only has 10 followers, that's a likely chance that his projects are not as high quality as a Scratcher who's been on for 2 months and has 1000 followers. I'm not saying 10 followers = bad quality scratcher, It's just easier to find really good projects when finding a scratcher with a lot of followers

Dear Scratch Team,
Please do not take this message personally. I have tried to get my point across by posting my honest opinion on this issue. I am sorry for the fact that it is slightly “undiplomatic”, but I did not want to sugarcoat the issue and miss the point of the problem entirely. I can edit any part of this post that you find offensive. Thank you for reading.

This update is bad for many reasons:

1. I've spent hours and hours for 2 years and 7 months on making high quality projects and many friends. Are you saying that I don't deserve to see how many comments I've gotten, or how many friends I have at a glance? You might as well make this a 100% socialist Scratch and remove the love-its and favorites too. And while you're at it you could get rid of the front page, and you could get rid of the views, and then you could make each page only load one comment at a time, just so that others wouldn't feel sad when they saw a project with more comments then theirs…

No. I mean no, seriously. I'm not trying to be rude or anything, but really? I've earned every last follower fair and square. If anybody thinks otherwise they can unfollow me now. Because if I can't even see how many comments my projects have, I think I'll quit and bring my programming talents elsewhere. At some point you just have to accept the fact that it doesn't have to be equal.

2. If it really is all about programming, why do you heed the complaints of Scratchers who badger you about Add Everything studios, or “Unfairness”. Like seriously, does it really matter if your project is in a few studios? So you removed the manager and project count from studios. Great, now if I ever want to see how many projects I have in one of my perfectly legitimate studios, I have to count them by hand! That's a huge waste of time! Is Scratch slowly being overtaken by a Scratch Team who regulates everything a user does and says?

3. It doesn't even do anything. Follow for follows will still continue. In fact, I bet that if I offered free F4Fs on this thread, I'd get lots of takers. Besides, if the number doesn't matter, who cares if somebody gets a few non-legitimate follows? Spam isn't destructive or anything, just annoying. That's why I allow it on my profile, just to show that it isn't that bad. In fact, anybody that is reading this thread, FEEL FREE TO SPAM ALL YOU WANT ON MY PROFILE. (Within reason, of course.) I will look at anything you post, if I can.

Could you at least put some milestones such as 10+ or 100+ or 1000+? That at least makes the scratcher feel accomplished

Those numbers only have one significant figure each.
I do not believe they would be very helpful.
The only solution to this problem is to put everything back to how it was.
Anybody who is annoyed at F4Fs should remember that nobody is a perfect person.
So we can all stop complaining, and everything would be better.

Personally, I'm not going to be happy with a compromise. It needs to be the way that it was before.

Honestly, I rather have a profile filled up with “follow for follow” comments rather than no comments at all
