The New Super Mario Topic WII (note: not just for Super Mario Wii)

Theory: coins are actually made of the same material as power moons, and the reason they are literally everywhere is that they fall from the sky, or from wherever power stars/moons come from.
Their placement seems to be meaningful, so perhaps whoever/whatever is sending the coins to Earth is helping Mario defeat Bowser. The unseen hero of the franchise.

Looks like I was wrong. WhO's eXcITed for D℞. MARIO (the mobile game went offline) at the June 29 “e3” direct that will TOtaLly happen and isn't just a rumor‽
Because we got a 3rd Mario Strikers, then maybe we could get a 3rd Mario Baseball, but not this soon.
