Scratch 3.0 Technical Discussion
As Scratch should give us the choice to use 2.0 or 3.0. Older scratchers will agree, Scratch 3.0 is very different from the one we're used to. The preview is on the opposite side, the tabs are reorganized… It requires basically re-learning scratch. If beginners want a big, bright, easy interface then let them. But don't force everyone to get used to it. Have a setting to switch to 2.0 and keep 3.0 as the default. Not to mention they removed lots of important tools for the sake of being ‘user-friendly.’an older Scratcher, I have to say… I disagree! Scratch 3.0 is pretty awesome. Yeah, it's a bit to get used to, but - while I guess I'm biased because I spent a lot of time in the Scratch 3.0 beta - it's.. not that hard. A lot of the UI does really make more sense now. And I'm not bothered in the slightest by the fact that the UI is all big and bright and “easy” now – that's the Scratch Team trying to be more welcoming to people who are unfamiliar with the cold, dark despair of programming. (I'm just kidding. Of course coding is great for everyone. The new editor design reflects that!)
(i dont know where to say this at)
And y'know – us older Scratchers should be able to adapt to changes, right? At the end of the day, Scratch 3.0 is still the same Scratch we've always loved – it's just a refined, updated version of it, and since we're experienced with Scratch, it won't take us long to re-learn the changed things. Anyway, a bunch of the changes to the editor really are more practical, and while there are totally some bugs, the ST is definitely working on fixing them.
(No worries, this isn't a bad topic to give your thoughts on Scratch 3.0 on.)
(PS, FYI, most things that are missing from the editor are things the Scratch Team is working on, really. I bet if you tell me something that Scratch had in 2.0 but not 3.0, I can find you a GitHub issue or comment saying that it's on the list of things the Scratch Team plans on re-adding. And if not - if you bring it up, the ST will probably label it as a missing feature and add it to their list of things to add back!)

Scratch 1.4 and 2.0 are both available for download. Scratch should give us the choice to use 2.0 or 3.0. Older scratchers will agree, Scratch 3.0 is very different from the one we're used to. Also, the stage was on the right during the 1.x period, which lasted from 2007 to 2013, and on the left during the 2.0 period, from 2013 to 2019. Both of these periods of time were around 6 years long. However, with 3.0's release, the stage is back on the right, meaning that the right-stage layout has now been used for a longer period of time than the left-stage layout.
I was also about to say this.
Download Scratch 2.0 here

Scratch 3.0 Technical Discussion
older Scratchers should be able to adapt to changes, right? …And y'know – us
The problem for young Scratchers is that 6 years in the life of a 12 year old is 50% of their life (or 100% of their programming time)
Whereas for an old codger like me - its only 10%
So, I have a lot of sympathy for young Scratchers facing this great upheaval in their programming experience
NO-ONE (well very very few people) like change and 2.0 to 3.0 is a pretty big one
A lot of scratchers have put their heart and souls into some projects and now things are not working out well (or in some cases - not at all) for a lot of them
As _nix has said - Scratch 3 is not terrible or bad but it is a big change.

Not really. Flash was a browser extension, and Scratch didn't really require a very recent version of it. 3.0 requires a more modern browser than is available on a lot of older OSes. Anyways, I don't think Scratch 3.0 needs flash and If you were able to run 2.0 (Which did need flash) you should be able to run 3.0, if you have flash that is.
My browser / operating system: MacOS Macintosh X 10.14.1, Chrome 71.0.3578.98, No Flash version detected

When you download projects now, they are .sb3 files so they can't work with 2.0 player unless you downloaded them as .sb2 before the update Anyone know if there's a way to run projects with the 2.0 player? Some of my projects don't work anymore and I'd like to include a link that tells the user to go there instead (Phosphorus doesn't work either).
when green flag clickedOk, but unironically, check this out!
if <I think of something> then
it's probably been done before

This is horribly true. When they moved from 1.4 to 2.0 you could still download the old sb format of 1.4 by clicking the “share” link below the project player (link that now, very unfortunately, it is not available anymore). As a workaround you can use MegaApuTurkUltra's Scratch Project Backup tool, or my s2online 2.0 project viewer. This is horribly true. SB to SB3 problems
When I convert a Scratch 1.4 project directly into Scratch 3.0, things don't work. For example:
Is there a way to convert Scratch 1.4 projects into Scratch 2.0 project without using the offline editor, then load the Scratch 2.0 project into Scratch 3.0?

Since a 1.4 project is stored as a binary file, you can simply go to https://projects.scratch.mit.edu/<id> to download it (you'll have to rename it to .sb). (projects.scratch.mit.edu doesn't work as simply for sb2s and sb3s because they simply return the project.json files; their assets are fetched one by one by Scratch 2.0 and 3.0 and other clients like MATU's Scratch Project Backup and s2online.)Scratch Project Backup tool, or my s2online 2.0 project viewer. Thanks _nix. Thanks for that info - it worked for me to download the 1st project I uploaded to Scratch back in July 2007!
