[ANNOUNCEMENT] ScratchNetwork - A NEW WEBSITE - ADVERTISE, PROVIDE HOW TO's AND MORE!

Passwords in ScratchNetwork

Something new is now available on ScratchNetwork. It is the ability to password protect your account.

Your account used to be only secured with your Scratch account. You have to verify your account by posting a code on an account that ScratchNetwork tells you to do. It works well, it means that you don't have to make a new account on ScratchNetwork. However, now you can add a password to it and secure it further.

How does it work?
It is hard to fully understand ScratchNetwork at all because of its non-free and proprietary nature. But this is what you can see on the surface.

Password protection makes your account secured by a password as well as your Scratch account itself. To enable it, you click the dropdown arrow next to your name, and click the settings button. Your screen should look like this:

Click the link “Add password to your account” and then you will be directed to a screen asking you to make a password. Once you make a password you will be signed out of ScratchNetwork. When you sign back in (after you verify your account) you will be prompted for a password.

Why use it?
There are two main reasons to use it:
1. Improved security (if you actually use a password with enough entropy)
2. You can only comment and rate posts if you have a password on your account

Yes. Myed is just forcing you to password protect your account. Which is fine. However, it seems like it is already secure enough (you already have to sign into your normal Scratch account) I am uncertain why he did this, but it seems okay for now.

My concerns
Note: these concerns are not directed at myed
I have a few tips for people using this feature:
1. DO NOT USE YOUR SCRATCH PASSWORD If you do, you defy the main reason to use a password. Also, if there is a leak in ScratchNetwork, then everyone has your Scratch password. I am unsure if myed has access to the passwords. He shouldn't, as that is terrible security, but keep in mind that he might see your password. There is no way to know whether he can see it or not because no one can know what ScratchNetwork actually does.
2. DO NOT USE PASSWORDS FROM OTHER WEBSITES This is terrible security practice in general.

I use Firebase for the comments. I had to find someway to auth users as before it was read/write all. So this is the way to do it. Also, I do not have access to passwords. That'd be pretty dumb. I use Firebase auth.

Oh and also, I might add your advice later on to the page.

Should say “seamless” instead of “seemless”

ScratchNetwork is a rapidly advancing network for Scratchers that can be very useful. However, there are some things to be desired. The most important thing is what this post is about.

Thanks for the constructive feedback, however, I still stand by my plan to make not ScratchNetwork open-source(at least during this early stage of development). That's all.

But WHY? You aren't actually giving a good reason for making it proprietary. “It will never be open source” means pretty much nothing.

Because they want to? Isn't that a good enough reason to do something on your own website?

Noit's not. I won't bother explain why because MasterOfTheTiger already has.

Why do I have to say this, again? Nj this is dead news.

rant warning!

ScratchNetwork's backend won't be open-source for these reasons.
1. It's my intellectual property. - Yeah, I can do what I want with it.
2. It's used for more than ScratchNetwork. Many of my clients rely on the EDXTN framework everyday.
3. Data is an invalid argument - for those saying “but what is SN doing with my data??” you need to rethink. SN only collects your Scratch username. The EDXT collects your IP for hit logging, for that people read UK2's privacy policy.
4. Security is also an invalid argument - I am not stoopid. I know how to secure my websites, and I don't need people to call me “lazy” for “not protecting information” when I am.
5. Your access to ScratchNetwork is not your freedom. - really, it isn't.
6. The client is already open source. - Everything you see on SN is opensource. The backend isn't.

Yeah anyway, that's all.
