Scratch Mentor Program FAQ

click the links above to go to the corresponding section!

What is the Scratch Mentor Program?
The Scratch Mentor Program is a tier of the Youth Leadership Lab. The goal of the program is to build on the existing Scratch Design Studio (SDS) and Welcoming Committee programs (SWC), giving mentors access to both programs and help shape Scratch’s special events. (Scratch Wiki)

What is this FAQ?
Since the Scratch Mentor Program encompasses the SDS, SWC, and special events programs that were previously separate, this topic consolidates all the information into a single topic. This topic was written collaboratively by the Scratch Mentor Program members.

Who is apart of the Scratch Mentor Program?
A list of current members can be found here. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

How can I join?
Applications will reopen in 6 months and will be announced under the “Scratch News” section of the homepage.

What if I still have questions?
You can leave a message on this topic using the “Reply” box, and we will do our best to answer. If you have suggestions or feedback for this topic as well, feel free to share it here!

Note to moderators: despite the ongoing guide moratorium, members of the Scratch Mentor Program believed that creating a consolidated FAQ topic would be beneficial to the community. I believe ceebee can provide confirmation, if needed.

Scratch Mentor Program FAQ

Home | Scratch Design Studio | Welcoming Committee | Scratch Special Events

What is the Scratch Design Studio?
The SDS is a themed studio featured on the Front Page. It is changed approximately every month. All Scratchers are invited to create project based on the studio’s theme.

How can I find the current SDS?
Look for the third row on the Scratch homepage.

What are the requirements for a project to be added?
Projects must…
  • Be related to the studio theme
  • Have been shared no more than 1 month before the studio creation date
  • Be the only project the creator has in the current SDS

Why must projects be shared no more than 1 month before the studio creation date?
The SDS encourages creativity, so it’s great to see people create new projects inspired by a theme.

Why can I only have 1 project in each SDS?
Since projects in the SDS can appear on the Front Page, we want to make sure everyone has the same opportunity for their project to show up.

How can I add a project to the studio?
After sharing a project, copy the project URL and paste it in the studio comments. A curator will check that it meets the requirements and add it to the studio!

How can I curate the SDS?
If you provide constructive feedback on others’ projects, a manager may invite you to curate the SDS as an SDS Helper. Note that you do not need to be a curator or manager to have your project added to the studio.

What is an SDS Helper?
SDS Helpers are curators in an SDS. Their responsibilities include adding projects to the SDS, providing feedback on projects, and answering questions about the SDS and Scratch. Being an SDS Helper in one SDS does not guarantee you will be invited to future studios.

What is an SDS Curator?
SDS Curators are managers in an SDS. Their responsibilities include those of SDS Helpers, as well as helping plan future studios, creating seed projects, and discussing the SDS.

Can I suggest SDS themes?
Yes! Create a project with your idea and submit it in the Propose SDS Themes studio.

Scratch Mentor Program FAQ

What is the Welcoming Committee?
The Scratch Welcoming Committee (SWC) is a program that was created in 2012 to help welcome New Scratchers to the website and help them out with any questions they might have. The SWC can be found in this studio. Scratchers can become members of the committee by creating a welcoming project and submitting it for review to the Project Submissions studio.

How can I submit a project?
  • The project you make should meet all of the requirements listed here.
  • Then, an SWC Reviewer or Curator will review your project to make sure it meets the requirements.
  • If your project meets all of the requirements, it will be added to the main Welcoming Committee studio or the Completed Projects studio (if it’s added to the Completed Projects studio, that means that the user that reviewed your project can’t add it to the Welcoming Committee themselves, but it will be added soon).
  • If your project doesn’t meet the requirements, you will be told what you need to add and the project will be removed from the Submissions studio. You can then add it back when it meets the requirements.

Can anyone make a project?
You must have the Scratcher status to join the Welcoming Committee. Information on what a Scratcher is can be found here. Also remember that creating a project for the SWC will not get you invited to curate.

How many projects can I make for the Welcoming Committee?
We limit the number of projects someone can have in the studio to one.

Why has my project not been reviewed yet?
It may take some time for your project to be reviewed. There is currently a large backlog, so it may take a while to get to your project. Curators and Reviewers also aren’t always on Scratch and can be busy in real life.

How can I opt out?
If you would like to opt out of the program, simply remove your project from the main studio. You can do this by pressing the “Add to Studio” button on the project page of your project, and then press the option that says “Scratch Welcoming Committee” in green. If this does not work, contact a Curator.

How can I curate the Welcoming Committee?
Only Scratch Team members and Welcoming Committee Curators can curate. Curators are not chosen on request and are chosen by current Curators and the Scratch Team. If you are seen helping around the community or you are an active Reviewer, you may get chosen to curate. For more information, see this project.

How can I review projects?
SWC Reviewers aren’t invited right away, but you can follow the steps in this project if you are interested in helping and becoming a Reviewer.

What are Special Events?
Special Events are events that are planned and launched by the Scratch Team for the Scratch online community. This includes things like Pi Day, Earth Day, Scratch Week, Scratch Camp, Scratchtober, Year in Review, and others.

Everyone is welcome to create a project based on the theme of the event!

Scratch Mentor Program FAQ

I never want to be one of those people that point out spelling or grammar errors since I don’t want people to do that to me, but, since this is going to be a Ceebee blessed sticky, there are a couple of things that caught my eye.

“Be the only project they create has in the current SDS”. I know what you meant. It just needs a little help.

“ All Scratcjeds are invited to create project based on the studio’s theme.” I definitely know what you mean, but still.

And I guess we will always be stuck with the naming issue where a studio curator of an SDS studio is called an SDS Helper and someone who helps out in an SDS studio might not be an SDS Helper. (Maybe making a project to explain that could be an idea for a project in the current SDS studio.)

But overall this is a really well done topic.

ST members who moderate the forum are not aware of any ‘OK’ given by those in charge for the Scratch Mentor Program for a consolidated FAQ forum topic by a non-ST member. If you were given the ‘OK’ from ceebee or another ST member, please ask ask them to let the forum moderators know about this or you can report this post with a link to where another ST member has given the ‘OK’ to do so.
