Announce a statement about how the filterbot detects bad words inside of messages to increase understanding of why users were muted

We get this question a lot:

“Why have I been muted for saying (sentence)?”
We have decided to give an answer for most of these types of mutes.

So, let’s say you post a comment like this:
Unicorns are my favorite animal!
Our filterbot, a robot that detects bad words in comments and mutes people, reads your comment like this:
Unicornsaremyfavoriteanimal!
The reason for this is because people who try to post things that are against the rules can easily use the space bar to get around our robot. So let’s pretend “printer” was a bad word. A person could post this:
printer
and out robot would detect it, and punish them for it. But let’s assume that person REALLY wanted to say the word “printer.” They could space out the word like this:
p r i n t e r
and if the filter bot didn’t remove the spaces when removing the comment, the person would get away with it until it was reported. But when the filterbot removes the spaces:
printer
You can see it becomes the full word again, so the filterbot can detect the bad word and punish the user accordingly.

Let’s go back to our old example:
Unicorns are my favorite animal!
We’re gonna make up a fake word that isn’t real, let’s do.. itean. That’s not a real word, but let’s pretend it is. And let’s pretend you’re not allowed to say it. Now take our old comment:
Unicorns are my favorite animal!
Our filterbot reads it like this:
Unicornsaremyfavoriteanimal!
And sees this:
Unicornsaremyfavoriteanimal!
and mutes the person who sent it.

So what I’m trying to say is, a comment that might not break the rules, could, by accident, have a bad word hidden inside of it. We’re not saying you intentionally typed a bad word into your comment — actually we’re saying the opposite! But it’s much safer to just mute the poster of the comment than to let it slip through, and risk someone getting hurt.

It would be nice to know a bit more about how the filterbot works. I didn't know that until I read this.

No longer using the forums unless necessary.

Really, stop with the “support/no support” thing. I don't care if you give a reason. If you have a reason you don't need to add this to your post in the first place. Stop acting like your opinion makes a difference. It doesn't. Opinions were never the point. The point is whether or not it's a good suggestion. If you can give a good reason at why this is a good idea or point out a flaw, do it, but don't take sides.
This is not sarcasm.

I don’t think that is how it works, but either method would give the same result on a spaced out swear, and the method listed is probably close enough, and it’s also easy for kids to understand.

whilst having a lot more false positives aka misfires, it's a lot more affective than letting people cuss or swear by seperating words.

Support! This seems like a very healthy thing to tell everyone, and would stop those “Why was I muted?????” Topics.

also, “itean” is technically a real word. it's the pural of “feather” in gaelic!

No because even giving people the slightest bit about why their comment was bad will make it easier to figure out bypasses for the filters

Wait, so would this be a sticky, post in the announcements forum, or something else? Would it be an ST member who would announce or could it be from literally anyone?

ST member would announce it
It will be in the announcements forum and maybe if the ST wanted to, pop up on scratch news section of the home screen

I think that would be the best choice since not many people go on the forums voluntarily

Isn't this gonna help people bypass a bad word as they learn how it works and how to expliot it?

Wouldn't - I have high doubt someone hasn't had the thought that the filterbot ignores all spaces, since that also causes misfires even if it's assisting in keeping non-misfires off.

Are you sure that's how it works? After all, “pass” is not filtered. Neither is “skyscraper”.

the ST does have some whitelisted words to prevent too many false positives
