Firefox limits Scratch projects to about 23 FPS

I noticed that starting today, all Scratch projects, even the most simple ones, are running at around 22-24 FPS. TurboWarp is also affected when 60 FPS is off. Maybe this could have been caused by the Firefox 96 update that got installed this morning?

My browser / operating system: Windows NT 10.0 11, Firefox 96.0, No Flash versions detected
Microsoft really should have bumped the Windows version to at least 10.1 on Windows 11

Wouldn't this be more suitable for BugZilla?

Also, Cannot reproduce, I get 26-30FPS on this project (probably my most recent project with an FPS counter).
My browser / operating system: MacOS Macintosh X 10.15 11.6.2, Firefox 96.0, No Flash version detected

I'm very confused. Half the time it flickers between 22 and 29 and the rest of the time it just stays 22.

I also have a browser extension FPS and it just says 22.

I don’t think this is a new problem for Windows 10 using Firefox. I did a little study Nov 2020 and noticed that I was getting about 22 FPS using Firefox but getting about 31 running the same project under Chrome. https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/446446960/

I just ran it now and got the same results.

Running your project I also get about 23 under Firefox and about 30 under Chrome (again both using Windows 10).

I'm also on Windows 10 using Firefox and I can't replicate it, that project runs at a constant 30 for me. I can only guess that it's either a browser extension acting up, or some sort of misconfiguration.

I don’t have any extensions but there’s no way for me to predict what the software vendors have done. It could be something as simple as a video driver option that does not work well with Firefox (and has not worked well on my desktop for a long time.)

But there are at least two of us Windows NT 10 users that have noticed the issue.

I did find this GitHub Scratch issue https://github.com/LLK/scratch-render/issues/957 that appears to be related.

A contributor called adroitwhiz says “ Firefox in general appears to be slower than Chrome, and this isn't Scratch's fault. WebGL performance in particular seems to suffer, but most JS stuff performs worse than in Chrome.

If you can provide a specific example project that's particularly laggy in Firefox compared to Chrome, I can try to look into why it's slow and look into the specific parts that are causing the slowdown.”

The person who created the GitHub issue says they were using Win 10 Firefox 94.

There was no follow-up giving a specific example project and the issue was closed a couple of days later.

It does not sound like the Scratch Team is interested in this problem that just happens for some of us and I’ll admit that using Chrome is an easy workaround.
