Cloud Variables Limited to 128 Characters Now?

In order to inform people about the new limit, so they don't get confused about what's happening, I created this to spread the word.

You can share it in your signature (or somewhere else) by copying this:

87.5% reduction of storage per variable is pretty bad. A lot of things that require data large amounts of characters to store (namely usernames) are very hard to store now. And on top of this compounding our troubles we aren't able to use hexadecimal any more.

Just because it's harder doesn't mean you can't do it! Compression isn't all you can do. Saving less stuff isn't all you can do. There's so many methods to be able to make a nice project with the limits. Maybe you just need to think outside the box.
Cloud definitely isn't useless. It would be if there were 0 characters possible, but no, there's 128. Cloud isn't useless just because many things can't be done anymore.

Everybody stop saying cloud is bad! The only reason why the scratch team made cloud in the first place was for simple stuff like hi-scores!

Keep in mind the is the Advanced Topics forum not the Questions about Scratch forum. The Advanced Topics forum gets angry at stuff like this, and for a reason (I'm pretty upset about this). It's also not a good idea to talk like that on Advanced Topics, since for some reason some people get angry at that too (no offence)

I won't bother explaining things you won't get to you, multiplayer is dead, voting is dead and pretty much everything else that uses cloud is dead.

Why not store the values as multiple precision numbers instead of as text? Then the Scratch Team would be able to store a lot more digits in a lot less space, and the only disadvantage would be that leading zeroes wouldn't be stored anymore.

You could store them in the brilliant ycd format.

Take each group of 19 digits and parse them to uint64_t and write them to the buffer. This is quite possibly the most efficient way to compress strings of digits - 5 billion digits of Pi can be stored in 2 GB!

Hex is even easier - just write the bytes directly to the buffer!

Or you could, y'know, support strings…

And there's a whole other bag of tricks you can use to save your precious dedotated wam

Remember, guys, if you don't want to improve your cloud system, make it absolutely useless and say it's a financial issue even though you're backed by one of the richest companies in the world and haven't received any boosts of users in the last 3 years!
