Yup, and I started it.

Also, fixed.
Hey can we agree that, even though I'm American, the metric system is better than the American system for measuring length?
Nah, sorry, we can't

What I think we CAN agree on though is that each side grew up using different units, so that's what'll obviously be more comfortable to them
Teach kids the different prefixes (micro, mega, centi, nano, kilo etc.) and they'll immediately prefer metric in an instant. No need to learn separate units for weight, capacity, length and lord knows what else, aside from the base word (like litre or gram).
I've known those units since I was 7 (not just the basic metrics) and I still prefer imperial

Let's not get into this, no one's going to win

Yeah, we're getting MILES off topic, let's not try to get into an argument which could result in a GALLON of tears

I call rainboots golashes and beanies toboggans.

Well, not as much as I used to since I've lived in the north for several years now and literally NO ONE knows what I'm talking about lol

So several months ago I saw this study done by The Atlantic (you can watch the video here) where they looked at the different dialects in the United States.

Here are some of the questions:
What is a generic term for a carbonated beverage?
(I.e Soda, Pop, Coke, etc.)
What do you call a long sandwich that contains cold cuts, lettuce, etc?
(I.e hoagie, sub/subway, etc.)
How do you pronounce pecan?
How do you pronounce bag?
What do you call it when it rains while the sun is still shining?
(I.e sunshower, etc.)
What do you call a rubber soled shoe worn in gym class?
(I.e sneaker, gym shoes, tennis shoes, etc.)
What do you call a long road that many cars drive on?
(I.e freeway, expressway, highway, etc.)

Those are just a few of the questions, how do you and people in your area pronounce/say these things? Discuss it here.
Soda
Sub
Puh-con
…Bhag?
Raining
Tennis Shoes, although lately I've been saying sneakers more often
The last ones are different things, so I refer to them by what they're individually called.

I also say yard sale
Used to say lightning bugs, I now say fireflies (I think that's due to growing up to be honest)
Water Fountain
Golashes (Rain Boots)
Toboggan (beanies)
I pronounce Appalachian Apple-ayshin, although I know this is not correct, it feels weird to pronounce it correctly and I have to force myself to
I pronounce Caramel “Car-muhl”
I used to pronounce pen as pin
I used to say “Roly Poly” for pill bugs
I pronounce crayon as “cray-ohn”
I pronounce lawyer “law-yer”
I also say y'all and ain't

Basically, this is how I talk:
https://youtu.be/1RzVKCWXrRA
I have the Virginia Tidewater Accent, but unfortunately, it's faded some

My only problem with the metric system is that the base word for weight is actually kilogram, not gram

And all the world over, each nation's the same,
They've simply no notion of playing the game.
They argue with umpires, they cheer when they've won,
And they practice beforehand, which ruins the fun!

And “gram” is actually a unit of mass, not weight. The base word should be “Newton”

Choose which you say:

  • Center/Centre/Center
  • Bandit/Thief/Robber
  • Farm animals/Livestock
  • Trainers/Sneakers
  • Jumper/Pullover/Sweater
  • Crisps/Chips
  • Cookie/Biscuit
  • Bonnet/Hood
  • Vacation/Holiday
  • Learnt/Learned
  • Candy/Sweets/Confectionery
  • Flat/Apartment
  • Mobile Phone/Cell Phone
  • Chutes and Ladders/Snakes and Ladders
  • Cot/Crib
  • Dressing Gown/Bathrobe

Weird fact about misinterpretation:

In 2002, I didn't hear “of an old Mustang”, so when it said “dancing on a hood in the middle of the woods”, I imagined a tree stump with Little Red Riding Hood's hood on it, with Anne-Marie dancing on top!
