~❄️Winter Scratch Camp❄️~ Year 2! Staff info and Discussion

Welcome to another wonderful year at Winter Scratch Camp!

This is a forum dedicated to providing info for our staff as well as for us to discuss our plans for events and such. If you are a camper, we would appreciate if you didn't peek- You can, but that would only spoil the fun!

Staff Info:

There are 4 types of camp counselors. They are:
❄️Cabin Leaders
Cabin leaders must specialize in the skill of their cabin (art, code, writing) and they have several jobs. Firstly, they must encourage activity within the members of the cabin. Secondly, they must alert them to new tutorials related to their cabin's skill, as well as alert them to events and competitions the camper's might be interested. Thirdly, they must track the cabin's Cabin Points, which a member can win individually by entering a competition and then win more by getting a place. You must also keep track of activity levels. If a camper goes inactive for two weeks without letting you know in advance, ket me (Novakitty) know and their spot can be filled by someone else on the waiting list. Also, as campers join camp, invite them to their cabin if they have been assigned to it. (You can check the studio description occasionally). They are allowed to add their contest entries and event entries to their cabin. And most importantly, help them out! Answer their questions, be friendly and make this the most fun experience it can be!
(Note that there are two leaders per cabin, for various reasons.)
(Also, our three cabins are Winter Wolf (art cabin), Polar Bear (code cabin) and Snowy Owl (writing cabin.))

❄️Specialists
Specialists specialize in one of the three skills, and every two weeks they will make a tutorial that will help the campers with techniques in that skill that will help them with events to come. (Aka, if we have a poetry competition coming up, the writer specialist would make a simple tutorial on the basics of poetry with some extra tips.)
❄️Event and competition hosts
There will be two forms of activities our campers can participate in: Events and Competitions. Events are simply little activities they can do for fun, like a coloring page or a remix chain event. Essentially, things they can do purely for fun. Competitions are exactly what they sound to be; Challenges they can enter to win points and prizes. These could be make a game about penguins, draw a winter animal competition, or even poetry about a snowflake competition. Please note That even as a host, you must discuss with me before making events. Any member is allowed to pitch in ideas for events or competitions, though it is my final decision as head manager of Winter Scratch Camp as to if it will be hosted. I encourage that several of us discuss ideas for events and competitions, as the more ideas, the merrier!
❄️General staff members and communicators
These staff members have the simple task of helping around when needed, answering camper's questions and helping them to get oriented. Pre-opening we would appreciate if you advertised for us. Your job is to also make sure all members are aware of events and competitions and tutorials and to encourage them to check them out. Also, you can help me with joining campers during the weeks till our opening. As manager you can accept camper forms. We rarely decline membership, and the only reason we wouldn't is if the person seems visibly hostile with their projects and comments. If this happens, there's no real need to reply but you can leave a polite decline if you want. If the cabin a person wants is full, you can tell them they can join a different cabin or be put on the waiting list for if someone in that cabin drops out.

Events and Competitions (regarding points and prizes)

❄️Every Event rewards a Cabin Point just for entering.
❄️Every Competition rewards a Cabin Point just for entering. However, placement will also give points and prizes. 1st place: 5 points and one prize. 2nd place: 3 points and one prize. Third place: 2 points. This will be the same for all competitions.
❄️Hey, I don't want to make prizes! No worries! I will be making a “Prize case” which, upon winning a prize, they can choose what they want from the prize case to use in their own projects. But…. According to Scratch, people can just take what they want from any project with credit. Yes, I know, I'm perfectly aware of this rule, and if people want to go around using my art from the prize case without winning it then I don't care. The Prize Case remains to be a good incentive from my other camps and seriously, doesn't it just feel better to deserve a prize from a prize case?
❄️Collaborative events: New this year, instead of having entire cabins get together to work on a project, we will be having smaller collaboration-requiring challenges. In these, people must pick a partner, either from within their cabin or another, to work on it. These competitions should encourage collaboration through having two-skilled components (Like, write a poem about an animal and draw it too). Points and prizes are slightly different for these: Each member entered get's their cabin an entrance point for competition, however, placement point prizes are higher because the points must be divided between two cabins or all to one. This makes for a greater incentive to do these competitions. 1st place: 10 points and a prize each. (five to each cabin or ten to one cabin) 2nd: 6 points and a prize each (same division) 3rd: 4 points and no prize (same division)

Please sign up in the studio to be a camp counselor! We would love to have you if you, especially if you read all of this. Put the codeword Winter Wings in the why you want to join of your bio sheet so that I know you read all of this! Feel free to ask me any questions you have!

Let's make this the best Winter Scratch Camp ever!

Extra information for event hosts:

When making your event or competition projects, here is some extra info regarding putting it together:

- All events and competitions projects must have a legible thumbnail stating what the project is and labeling it as either an event or competition.

-All events and competition projects must be designed with light blue/white/wintery colors and visible text. (Black is fine for text.)

-Please include instructions and rules for all competitions and events, including a listing of prizes for placements and the entrance point prize. A basic visible aid is also helpful if necessary, but that is up to you. (Like, a good example of an entry for a CC or an example of a winter scene for a drawing contest.)

-Before replying to someone, unless you are certain, check with the list in the studio if they are in camp instead of asking them. The studio has a list and it's easy to go back and look at- we don't want confusion with random people saying they are in camp and getting into the competition. ALSO: Please avoid criticizing their entries!!!!! This is meant to be fun, not overly challenging and strict. Constructive criticism is fine but I will not tolerate any personal bias towards a style of a camper's entry. (Aka, saying, “It looks good but bitmap would be better”). They are all trying their best!!

-Please let me know how many events and comps your willing to host! We're going to need you!

-A note to Specialists:-
Please also follow the design rule when making your tutorials.

- Also, I plan on having multiple specialists for each skill, which means that each can work on individual tutorials for each topic instead of one specialist making one gigantic tutorial. (For example, if we are covering both landscapes and pixel art, one artist would do a landscape tutorial and the other would do a pixel art tutorial.)

Judging:

All competition hosts must judge their competition on the day after it closes. (Tuesday.) Tuesday will also be the day all the points and prizes are distributed. Cabin leaders are not allowed to Judge. Trust me, I chose you all carefully so I trust you to be fair, but this is really just a rule for fairness guarantee to the campers. Co-leaders that are also event hosts, however, are allowed to judge in their own competitions.

This is a great undertaking! I don't know how I can help, but here is my resume…

Name: buffon1a
Job: brainstormer, project overseer - figuring algorithms/stuff, programmer - yay!, music director?
Do I want to be a co-leader? Well, I consider us all co-leaders, not for a specific job, but for the whole project!
Why do you want to join?
It’s fun
It’s fun
It’s fun
Seriously, working together is a great thing, and seeing a marvelous result coming out of it is astounding. I love working hard.

Activity level: I try to get on every day to check, but most days I can spend at least an hour coding, but I do code fast

In terms of experience, I came back to Scratch a few weeks ago after working on C++/Java. In these few weeks, I've made:
- Official Scratch Map –> where all users collaborate to make a good drawing on a canvas, when each user can individually only modify a small part of the canvas. https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/131313189/

- Official Physics Engine –> I created this so everyone can make their own platformer-style gravity games with ease! https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/132201686/

- I am WORKING on a project for music. Obviously, it is not finished, but work-in-progress. https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/131724805/

I like music as well:
I do compose a little bit, although I mostly focus on classical and only a little electronic music
I can help with finding music / matching music with text / stuff like that
I play the cello and piano and can record anything not to hard with it, if it is needed

Thanks!

Also, I may not be able to commit every single day on this from December 2nd.

I will try my best to make it most of the time though, and will let you know when I can't. Also, I usually work very odd hours

I would be interested in hosting the art competition for week one (Draw an animal from one of the three cabins)…should I set it up?

Yes, that would be great! Yes, I advise getting it set up now, so then you can share in on Monday/Sunday depending on when you can get on.

Attention General Staff, Cabin Leaders and Cabin Co's

Camp is open! Woohoo!

Now, I have assignments for all of you.

Cabin Leaders and Cabin Co's:

This is semi-unique for the opening week, but will be easier in the following weeks.

On Friday
Make an announcement in your cabin about the events that have been released!

On Saturday
Make an announcement in your cabin about the tutorials that have been released!

On Monday:
Make an announcement in your cabin about the competitions that have been released!

All three:
(If the Cabin Leader or Co is unable to do it, I'll assign a GS to it.)
On Monday:
Go the the profile's of each camper in that/your cabin and tell them to check back in their cabin and main studio because all the activities have been released! (Mostly to make sure people don't forget about camp.) This will need to be done every monday for the duration of camp.

Let's make this a fantastic Winter Scratch Camp!

Bumping for ideas on next week competitions!

Also, if anyone could throw together a really quick and simple tutorial on writing short stories or coding platformers, that would be awesome!!!
