Make a forum post for autism acceptance

If we have a flock of people who have disabilities disabled people (mentally) in the forums, more hate will come toward them.

Doing studios or projects would be even WORSE! Because then all of the people (for some reason) that do not like disabled people would also create an ARMY bots or other haters to the studio, and…womp womp. You can't go on the featured project or studio without seeing hatred everywhere.

I understand you can report these people, but there will be too many. Other than making it worse, it's best just to report the problem.

I don't think the fear of hatred should prevent the progress of acceptance.

This is my forum signature! On a forum post, it is okay for Scratchers to advertise in their forum signature. The signature is the stuff that shows up below the horizontal line on the post. It will show up on every post I make.

I was a Scratch Team member from May 10th 2019 to October 29th 2021.

It's not the fear of hatred, it's the effect of it.
Somebody will say something bad, and people will react to it, badly. I don't want to try to interact on a studio when the only thing given to interact with is hateful and argumentive people trying to start something they shouldn't. That would ultimately get the studio deleted, and more people mad. It would be a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.

I am not saying there shouldn't be an announcement about this. In fact, I think there should be an announcement about this in announcements! You can't reply to announcements, it would just remind people of what they should and shouldn't do.

Scratch already celebrates many other groups with featured studios and projects, so the same argument is applicable

I've never seen a featured project or studio about black history month, pride month, women's history month, or any other studio or project like that for as long as I can remember (which is about a day). I do not support the studio or project being featured idea, but I do support the idea of an announcement.

It seems like people are spinning the discussions on its heels and opting to put the post out of focus instead of making/providing links to example projects or example draft text they want to see. I’ll grant the benefit of the doubt that the suggestion was posted in good faith, but unless people start posting example projects or example text, then I have to run under the assumption that people aren’t genuinely invested in any sort of featureable project/studio or forum post.

Your registration history shows you’ve only been here since last year. We did do those in the past, and the forum stuff was only as of recent.

Mrow meow.(WHAT IS AUTISM?

Autism, ASD, is a neurological disorder, more specifically, a range of conditions which may affect the way one learns, interacts and/or expresses themselves. Ok, whew. That’s a mouth full. In essence, it affects how one interacts with others. There’s no one type of Autism, either! Some people with Autism have difficulties learning, others may excel at it. Some people with Autism might be extremely extroverted, or they might not like speaking to others. Some people may wish to talk about it, while others may attempt to hide it. How they wish to express it is valid.

Autism is typically described as a spectrum. This is mostly right. This spectrum has to do with how their symptoms shine through, as one might say. On the higher functioning end, they might have some issues with social interactions and sensory issues slightly worse than what one without this disorder may have. On the other hand, they might need a lot of help with some activities that you and I might not. Like any disorder or scenario, it’s best to treat both sides, as it is everyone, with respect and patience!)

Mrow meow.(THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS MONTH

April is Autism Awareness Month, which is a time to celebrate stories of Autism. A long time ago, many young children with Autism were isolated, due to a lack of research on it. Even today, it can take a really long time to diagnose! Researchers and specialists are actively looking into this disorder, and seeing how we can improve treatment to ensure that individuals with it have the best quality of life they can!)

Mrow meow.(The next line is merely an idea on how they could go about it, as are the above paragraphs.)

Mrow meow.(CELEBRATING IT ON SCRATCH

We here on the Scratch Team encourage you to make a project about a famous person you know of who had it. Or, if you live with it, make it a project! Then, share it in <insert studio, or other.>. You could also make your own studio about it!)

Mrow meow.(Note, I do have autism, but tried to write it from a blank perspective, while also aiming for as neutral language as possible.)

Oh my goodness gracious
We need a post for every country, religion, disabilities, fandoms, genders, orientations, etc. because they might face harassment!!!11!!1!!

I’m not autistic (i don’t know i haven’t and will probably never get a diagnosis) so this may be based a bit ☠️
If they receive harassment, the report button exists, and the community will beat up that guy. Trust me
And doesn’t it fall under a line in the CGs like upper posts mentioned?
But many autistic people do face harrasement. And according to cheddargirl's post, groups that face harrasement deserve a forum post.
So do other people with other stuff

I’d argue that there shouldn’t be a forum post for autism acceptance, after thinking it through. Rather, I think there should be a forum post for acceptance of neurodiversity in general. This is basically a compass of everything neurodivergent, eg. Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, etc etc

A lot of neurotypical parents with neurotypical children wouldn’t bother to do that cause they wouldn’t see a reason to

A quick search shows that it's being expanded to be inclusive of all forms of neurodiversity (though this seems to be only as recent as perhaps last year: https://humanresources.wp.txstate.edu/2023/04/03/your-guide-to-neurodiversity-celebration-month-how-can-you-be-an-ally/)

This changes the scope of this suggestion quite significantly; so draft posts or projects/studios may need to be redone in light of this fact.

Make a forum post for autism acceptance

I myself am diagnosed autistic, and wanted to provide some insight on things because as has been proven by a few posts on this thread already, many people on Scratch are uneducated about the month of April and its correlation to autism.

The term “Autism awareness month” is considered, among the autistic community, to be a bad way of naming the month. This is because these terms are presented by a company called Autism Speaks, which claims to advocate for those of us on the spectrum when they, in fact, use very unethical methods of doing things and have done nothing but spread misinformation and confusion about autism. Unfortunately, this company is very prevalent in how autism is seen and has a tendency to put a negative view on us. With this in mind, I would like to request that it is at least known the preferred term to use in support of autism during April is "autism acceptance month" and that Autism Speaks is a very bad company. I don't want to go into detail about the things they've done here, but feel free to do your own research.

I'm happy to answer any questions or provide more insight on things, but I do think that especially during this month it is important for this to become a more well-known and actually understood topic.
