there are lots of linux distros, but tbh you can just stick to the popular ones like mint or fedora or something. linux mint is commonly recommended for beginners. fedora is good too, and has a major corporation backing it. it uses all the latest stuff and continuously gets updated, though, so if that’s not what you want you then you should look elsewhere.

what was your problem with ubuntu? I found it pretty straightforward to install apps on it, but maybe that was just my experience (I also used a derivative of ubuntu, so my experience might be different)

It can take forever to load, and is too focused on the terminal.

Fun fact: If you have malware on a Windows NT device, it's possible that deleting system32 will severely damage the malware. It will also damage your Windows install.

the first problem could be caused by your hardware or by the software. you can figure out more about what’s happening on boot with the command

sudo systemd-analyze blame

which lists how long was spent starting up different programs at boot.

as for the second problem, that’s just how linux is sometimes. but to be fair, a lot of the time for major things there is a graphical version available, and programming generally uses the terminal a lot. linux’s terminal is a lot better than windows’s, too.

Did you use windows on your computer before? If so, did it take longer to load? And load what?
A lot of guides, even for beginners get you to use the terminal to do stuff, and although it is good to learn it, as it is the core of Linux, lots of graphical tools let you do the same thing. Use Ubuntu Software to download apps.

Also when I used Ubuntu, it also seemed a bit slow, maybe try linux mint (I haven't used that either though, but it has a different UI).

for the love of all that is good, when linux stops what you're doing and asks you "wait, do you really want to do that? this will nuke your system." take five seconds to actually read the warning. and if you don't listen and your system gets broken, that's your fault.

he does say that it could be his fault, but then he says that it could happen to new users generally. except it wont if they have eyes, because it says “hey, don't do that” right in the prompt.

Yes it's wrong, and yes people should think harder, but it's not about should, it's about would.

If linux wants to windows gamer user base to use linux, it needs to work for them. If linus did it, then chances are lots of people could have had the same mistake. They should read the warning, but they probably won't

being asked to type out an entire phrase to confirm something is not standard procedure for any normal task. this is obvious to anyone who's used a computer before. I can understand someone who doesn't do much with computers making this mistake, but he should know better.

plus, it's not like it could be made much more obvious, apart from just stopping the command entirely and making you include a special flag or something à la rm -rf /

Yeah, Linus probably should have realised, but it's still wrong, for more casual users. I know when I started using linux I might have typed that command (I did actually nuke my ubuntu system, but only because I turned it off in the middle of an update)

You are going to want to compile/install the linux-surface kernel post-installation of whatever distribution you are using. This will ensure a higher level of support for the hardware.
