what about gnome What desktop/window manager should I use on my Arch install? I've already chosen awesome, fluxbox, kde, lxde, openbox, and xfce3 as my list, but I'm not sure which specific one.
Anyway, if you want one on your list, I would do kde.

Alpine will (even with KDE Plasma). No operating system released in this day and age will run on 512mb of RAM.Yes it has ethernet.debian netboot, you can get i386, do you have an ethernet connection and a cable?Oh yeah it needs to be 32-bit and the iso can be burned to a cd (under 700mb) What distro would you recommend to run on my IBM NetVista alongside Windows XP with 512MB of RAM?
here's the exact iso:
https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/i386/iso-cd/firmware-11.3.0-i386-netinst.iso
install something light like fluxbox after installing is done
Update to Chrome 98 immediately More info

~snipped quotes~4gb of ram can barely run an OS
Arch with Cinnamon on my old Toshiba laptop from 2006 (4gb ram) runs fine, I mean it's slow, but what can you expect?
const juniper = programmer && musician; // my pronouns are she/her // i am trans and bi :P // you can call me june or juni for short but i prefer juniper

Orange os LE has a full gnome desktop RAM:
2GB RAM
Recommended: 4-8GB RAM
btw, I made the wiki and tested those figures.

Linux kinda sucks because there isn't really any balance between performance and simplicity plus unoffical support on almost every distro ever made. It's also open source, which means that people can create an overwhelming amount of distros.
Fun fact: If you have malware on a Windows NT device, it's possible that deleting system32 will severely damage the malware. It will also damage your Windows install.

1. Linux is a kernel not an OS Linux kinda sucks because there isn't really any balance between performance and simplicity plus unoffical support on almost every distro ever made. It's also open source, which means that people can create an overwhelming amount of distros.
2. Too many distros doesn't affect you because they are mostly reskins just pick one of the few that aren't reskins.
3. Unofficial support?

sounds like you tried to install a linux distro you didn’t like. pick another one based on what you know now and try again.

I have tried lots of distros, but Ubuntu is an overrated bloated mess with hard to install apps on top, Bodhi Linux (based off of Ubuntu) is even harder to use, and is extremely focused on not packaging “unnecessary” items, causing it to look horrible on my large Samsung display.Linux kinda sucks because there isn't really any balance between performance and simplicity plus unoffical support on almost every distro ever made. Puppy Linux probably isn't any different. I tried Slax, but it had terrible unoffical and offical support coverage, and I was helpless as soon as I ran into a problem.

You're going to the wrong places for distros. Searching best Linux distribution or searching best Linux distro for is not a good idea and will result in using a distro you don't like. Do more research, find one that fits YOUR needs, not someone else's.I have tried lots of distros, but Ubuntu is an overrated bloated mess with hard to install apps on top, Bodhi Linux (based off of Ubuntu) is even harder to use, and is extremely focused on not packaging “unnecessary” items, causing it to look horrible on my large Samsung display.Linux kinda sucks because there isn't really any balance between performance and simplicity plus unoffical support on almost every distro ever made. Portable distributions are typically built around being portable and nothing else. They won't be the easiest thing to use.I looked for things that fit my needs: a portable, lightweight distro, which cannot easily install from inside the OS, and, well, Slax and Bodhi Linux were the result. You're going to the wrong places for distros. there are lots of linux distros, but tbh you can just stick to the popular ones like mint or fedora or something. linux mint is commonly recommended for beginners. fedora is good too, and has a major corporation backing it. it uses all the latest stuff and continuously gets updated, though, so if that’s not what you want you then you should look elsewhere.
what was your problem with ubuntu? I found it pretty straightforward to install apps on it, but maybe that was just my experience (I also used a derivative of ubuntu, so my experience might be different)
