SWC Weekly

Part 1: Poems:

Haiku: Family

Always there, caring
Warm embraces; gentle voices
Tender love; and peace

Word Count: 11

Acrostic: Trust

True and strong,
Reliable; sure
Untainted, a comfort
Sacred, light in the dark
Tame and True

Word Count: 16

Free Verse: The Sea

There at the shoreline,
sand between my toes
I heard a gentle whisper,
soft and melancholy,
yet somehow yearning,
a gentle note
a sweet song
a message
more a story,
the tale of the sea
wanting to be told,
I smile, a grin across my face

Once settled in the sand
the sea began her tale,
A stormy night,
she whispers, calling out to me
one small vessel set sail

Waters harsh,
air thick,
storm clouds roll,
the small ship, stood little chance.

Just as the clouds pared
the sea once agian at peace,
the little ship could not be found
sunk at the bottom

No, the ship had made it home,
The sea yet to claim another life,
The sailors safe at home
In a grinning family's embrace

Here the sea still stands,
calm waters
thrashing waves
A hidden story
waiting to be told

I close my eyes
listing to the waves,
standing on the shoreline

Wading through the waters
listing,
just one more time

Word Count: 166

Limerick: Sailing

I hopped on the boat
The captain nodding as he spoke,
I fear that the boat cannot sail
The sails are torn, and I, as captain, am quite frail
With that he jumped of the ship, tossing away his coat

Word Count: 40

Etheree: Little Brother

I'm blinking back tears, watching him stand there
He's alone, lost, confused, and it's all my fault,
I was the one, the one who's there
But I yelled, lost my temper
Now he's standing there
Left all alone
Crying
Torn

Word Count: 40

Naani: Gone

It's heartbreaking knowing she's gone,
She left us last night
She loved us
But she had to go

Word Count: 18

Pleiades: Peace

Past wars have caused a tear in society
Pairs torn in half, left alone
Passion and care are scarce
Peace is what is needed

Word Count: 24

Part One Total Word Count: 315

That's all I don't have time for the other parts but I wish I did. I wanted to post this anyway bc It took time

Hey! In the first part, will Blackout Poetry count for words? In blackout poetry, we select words from another text to form a new poem (As long as it makes sense ofc)

OKAY SO NOW MY POEMS MEET THE REQUIREMENT, GREAT
WEEKLY
ONE: COMPLETED
TWO: WIP
THREE: COMPLETED
FOUR: WIP

Total: 351 Words

ACROSTIC:

Truly juice, a yummy snack
Of all the fruit-vegetables, I like this best
My brain relies on these to keep on track
And yet, the tomato is angered when you put it to the test
To use it as a snack is an atrocity, you hear?
Over every creature will the tomato inflict its wrath
Even the trees cannot avoid this path
So remember and fear…

HAIKU:

Twinkling up above
Stars reveal their endless love
And treasures untold

RHYME SCHEME

Sweetest honey in a nest
We humans like to treat
On what the bees make to eat
The bees find only the best
And bring it back to their nest

ALL RHYMES

Rocks and birds and trees and sticks
Foxes and wolves performing tricks
The forest is full of chirps and clicks
But beware of the ticks and pricks!

TONGUE TWISTER

Cognac cologne in Cary’s car can cause cautious calls

FREE VERSE

A sweet silver melody lilts through the sky
A lullaby of sweeping tides passing by
The sky closes its eyes
Wraps earth in a warm embrace
Sleeping hearts can be heard
In every single place
A mother full of love
A puppy, sound asleep
A late-working cashier-
Thank you for your work
To everyone who makes sure
That we sleep well at night
A police officer,
A nurse all in white
A sweet silver melody will sing you goodnight

LIMERICK

One dark night as I went to my bed
I felt something strange on my head
I looked all around me
Nothing could I see
Go to sleep, you’ve had too much mead

BALLAD (idk why I did this)

There once was a brave man
Who sailed ‘cross the sea
He held but a pan
And a packet of tea

He fought off the devil
With that packet of tea
Then that old demon
Fell into the sea!

ELEGY (Of an old family friend of ours who died… she really was amazing)

She had the softest of hands
The sweetest woman in all the lands
Her heart was always sincere
Never did she not want us near
She was kind and sweet,
To be with her was always a treat
Now she’s gone, and we miss her
But in our hearts, we’ll kiss her
A true woman of God

Hi, A doubt regarding this script writing activity. I do not have any story this long made by me yet so can I take an already made story or make a scriptwriting directly by forming story in mind?

SWC PART 4: NONFICTON (FINALLY)

PART ONE: What I think counts as a Memoir? WC: 848

Today I’ll be talking about something called inactive-type ADHD. ADHD stands for “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder,” though the title doesn’t exactly fit the disorder. A lot of people think that it means that the person who has it can’t focus, doesn’t pay good attention and is distracted constantly. While that may indeed be the case, it’s usually a bit less noticeable and severe than some picture it. Be aware, however, that ADHD affects different people in different ways. Today, I’m not going to tell you all the secrets to my brain- I’m going to explain how ADHD affects my everyday life! Here are the topics I’ll cover:
- How I Think
- How It Affects My Daily Life
- What It Feels Like (For Me)
- Conclusion

I. How I Think.
ADHD is its own way of thinking. It’s easier for us to get distracted because we see something and it easily reminds us of something else. Our brains go into an endless loop of talking to ourselves. If, for instance, I was supposed to take out the trash, my brain would go “okay, note to self, take out the trash.” remembering that I needed to take out the trash would probably remind me of some bizarre story I once wrote (because when doesn’t it?) and I’d go off the rails from there. Often, the train of thought brings us back to our original task, and we’re like “Oh, I should be doing that-” but we end up thinking about other things. It is difficult but not impossible to control- this is why we all work hard to gain control of our thoughts. Different things help different people!

II. How It Affects My Daily Life
There are a lot of aspects of my daily life that are influenced by inactive-type ADHD- some in good ways, and some in bad. For instance, sometimes I’ll be sitting down reading and a line will remind me of something that I need to be doing without being asked! A bonus, for sure. But then, I also start doing a chore and forget what I’m doing. Sometimes I space out or forget what I just said, and sometimes I hear every conversation in the room except the one I’m actively a part of. Usually I do exceptionally well retaining information- as long as I try my best to pay attention. Repeating everything the person says in my head helps me to take it in. Sometimes, however, it’s difficult, because my mind literally just goes blank. I know they’re saying words but I have no idea what they are. In fact, sometimes I don’t know that they said words at all. It’s weird when that happens, because then your brain is finally giving you some peace and quiet… at all the wrong times.

III. What It Feels Like (Personally)
There are a lot of ADHD myths that I’m not going to cover for sake of accuracy and time. I’m just going to be telling you some ways that it affects me, personally, that might or might not be symptoms that other people have.
First of all, distractions. Yes, I do get distracted in the middle of conversations and sentences. Yes, I might be doing school, open up my notepad and reorganize the whole thing. However, I won’t usually be talking to someone, see a squirrel and start running away saying “ooh pretty squirrel!” I do have distracted tendencies, but I’m constantly multitasking, too, which can be a plus (except for when you wish your head would just quiet down for a bit.)
Second of all, forgetting things. Yes, I constantly forget things. Someone will tell me to get their water bottle and I will associate it with something else that is also in that location- did you want a paintbrush? Or some other object. To help avoid that, I usually store the instruction with another idea. For instance, I stick it with something I know I won’t forget. There are a lot of examples- main original characters, crushes- even things like just my email address or best friend’s name. Usually, if I can associate two ideas with one another, I can remember what I need to be doing. I’m not sure if this works for anyone else, however.
Lastly, movement. I constantly fidget and move. Tapping legs, playing with my hands, pulling on my hair, et cetera. If I’m aware of it, I can usually stop myself, but often it just ends up happening. This is the problem with things like music (as mentioned in the previous paragraph, I associate ideas with other ideas to connect and make sure I don’t forget. Associating school or writing with a specific type of music keeps me on track!) because I constantly move something to the beat, whether it be tapping my foot, typing to the beat, et cetera, I always end up doing it.

IV. Conclusion
While this is a disorder, it’s nothing I can’t get past if I really try. Perhaps I’ll always have a weird way of thinking, but the way we do things is what makes us unique.

PART TWO: Travelogue. WC: 412

Welcome to sunny southern Texas! I’m Ivy and this will be my official south-Texan travel guide.
Texas is widely known as a hot, windy place full of cowboys and alligators- wait, no, the alligators are Florida- but you will soon figure out that Texas is much more than it seems.
Firstly, it is even hotter and windier than you thought. It’s actually not that hot physically, but, if you have long hair, the humidity will cause pain and suffering. If you’re down near Mexico, please don’t go to the beach unless you’re planning on spending six hours brushing out all that salt and sand.
Secondly, it is indeed full of cowboys, just not down South. At least I think so. I’m not sure, because I haven’t been to northern Texas. The south just isn’t full of as many cowboys as you’d think.
Third, southern Texas is really, really flat. Not a mountain for miles and miles. While that’s fine, I prefer the mountains. You might not.
Fourthly, the sights. There’s so much to see! Lots of fun resorts, hotels, a gazillion souvenir shops, really weirdly big gas stations called buc-ee’s (which have everything you need- literally!) and lots of… walmarts? That doesn’t seem right. Oh. hmm. Walmarts. Okay, cool.
Fifthly, (is that a word?) just look at all those golf carts go! Whirr, wirrrrr. Wow, they’re really zooming! Watch them zip across the resort roads and island aisles. You go, girls! They’re honestly really fun to ride on- well, in general they are. I haven’t ever ridden on one in Texas, but I can’t imagine it’s much different than it is to ride on other ones.
Lastly, the beaches. If you look past the wind (blows sand into your hair and eyes) and the water (it’s really nice water, but it’s still SALTY), there are some really nice beaches in southern Texas, down near the coast. My favorite was the one on South Padre Island- mostly because that’s the only beach I’ve been to in Texas. It wasn’t particularly beautiful, but it was so long and the sea stretched out for miles and miles.
That’s all I have to say about Texas- OH! One more thing. The restaurants down there are so unique, and, most importantly, one hundred percent DELECTABLE! Have you ever had Italian-Mexican or Greco-Italian? Now you have! Congratulations. That’s my travel guide to Texas- now get down there and get that saltwater in your hair! Ivy out, the end!

Epigram
People are a species that don't talk much. Only when they have something they'd like to say.

Part 2 - Essays
Paper napkins. Can they help the envoirnment?
After you eat, what do you wipe your mouth on? Chances are pretty high that your answer is ‘a napkin’. Now, this essay is not to promote the use of paper napkins, as cloth ones are much more Eco-friendly, but as cloth napkins are more expensive we must use paper napkins. This essay is to explain why and how you can recycle paper napkins and use them for the better of the world.
Paper napkins are made only out of paper, which makes them biodegradable. They are also made out of very thin paper with little fiber. This is exactly why they dissolve easily in water, and other liquids. This is also why they are used to clean up spills and other food, because they absorb things easily. This is also very helpful when it comes to a very Eco-friendly thing called composting. And I'm sure you've heard of it before. Composting is where you put food scraps and worms in a bin and they decompose into soil. This soil in very rich and is great for gardens and planting. And guess what, napkins are great for composting! When they decompose they can enrich the soil. This is a good thing as (on average) 450,000,000 napkins are used each day. If we compost these, the napkins aren't as harmful. If we simply throw them away, they decompose in landfills and the napkin fibers get in water and kill the organisms. In conclusion, the best way to help the environment is to use cloth napkins, but if you need to use paper napkins, put them in a compost bin. And if you don't have one, I'd recommend doing some research on them. Even if you don't garden, you can put the soil in your lawn or by trees, that may help it grow and thrive. So recycle, don't dump.

Part 3 - Scripts
STARLA is laying in bed on her computer. Her best friend CARRIE is on her phone by the bed.

STARLA
OMG! I can't believe it!

CARRIE
What is it?

STARLA
We were accepted into that writing camp!

CARRIE
No way! You mean the one that Yolanda Cermak runs?

STARLA
Yeah, who else's would we have applied to? Writing is boring, but not if you're with the best author in the world.

CARRIE
Agreesies.

STARLA
Omg, I forgot to tell my mom!

STARLA yells downstairs

STARLA
MOMMMM, I WAS ACCEPTED INTO YOLANDA CERMAK'S WRITING CAMP, CAN I GO?????

STARLA'S MOM
Uh sure?

STARLA
THANKS, MOMMMMM

CARRIE
You know, this writing camp is 40 miles away. Plus, you sleep there for a week.

STARLA
Oh no! My mom isn't gonna let us go!

CARRIE
Well, you better tell her. The camp starts tomorrow.

STARLA
WHAT?!?!

CARRIE
Yeah.

STARLA runs downstairs, quickly

STARLA
Mom?

STARLA'S MOM
Yeah?

STARLA
The camp is- uh. . . . cool. Thanks for letting me go!

STARLA'S MOM
You're welcome.

STARLA walks up the stairs to her room.

CARRIE
So? Are we going?

STARLA
Uh, yeah.

CARRIE
So she was fine about the going-away part.

STARLA
I, um, actually didn't get to tell her.

The next day. . . . .

STARLA and CARRIE are holding their suitcases, waving goodbye to STARLA'S MOM before they get in the bus to head to camp.

STARLA
Bye, Mom!

CARRIE
By Mrs. Paroglez!

STARLA'S MOM
Bye, you two. I'll see you soon!

STARLA
Mhm. . . .

Three days later

STARLA'S phone keeps beeping with missed calls and texts

STARLA picks up the phone

STARLA'S MOM
Hello? Starla, where are you!?!? You said you'd be back in two days!

STARLA
Yeah, it turns out the camp was two weeks not two days. . . .

STARLA'S MOM
You're kidding me! Your sister is coming home from boarding school tomorrow and I promised that she'd see you!

STARLA
What? Stella's coming home? Aww man! Can I come home, Mom?

STARLA'S MOM
No! I spent $400 on camp so you're going to make it worth the money.

STARLA
Fine

The End
Yeah, it's not a very long, nor good play. But it was all I had XD

Wha-? Only 875 words?!?!

More coming soon. . . .

Word War- Lost

The alarm clock went beep as I woke up to the morning sun. My curtain completaly opened, I wondered how every day marks a new beginning for all of us. How one night's sleep could change us. The sun shone brightly with dewdrops covering the long grass that surrounded my house. It was a beautiful morning with I believed that it led to an even more beautiful day ahead. I thought of the memories a person makes every day. The joys, the good times a person can have only if they are positive and zealous. The start of a new day and a new path.

Scratch Writing Camp Weekly #1 - March 2022

Water regulates the world's temperature, in addition to playing an important role in our bodies' management and the generation of electrical energy. Ocean streams, as illustrated by Ocean Explorer, affect all aspects of climate by regulating the uneven scattering of sun-controlled radiation that reaches the Earth's surface by the transfer of warm and cold water to communicate places. Water hydrates us, removes food from our bodies, transports nutrients to cells, and so on. Assuming that power is consistently delivered by drinking coal (which isn't unbelievable), it will be drained at some point. Experts have devised a method for using water to generate energy through hydropower. It is the controlled energy created by fast-moving water that may be used for specific purposes, one of which being electrical energy. Despite the fact that every individual consumes approximately 80-100 gallons of water on a regular basis for family activities, research shows that most people use around 80-100 gallons of water on a regular basis. Indonesians have a reliable site near 222,600,000,000 m3. Every second, a usual of three baby youngsters are considered in a vast domain of 7.9 billion individuals (according to a UN design adopted in March 2021). Consider how much more water will be utilized from now till the end of time. Certain people do not understand the meaning of water, and as a result, they consume liters of water every time they use it. Take, for example, how we usually go to the restroom. You go to the restroom occasionally, and after using the toilet, you clean up at the sink. Typically, children become involved while they are taking a break from playing and rush to the bathroom, failing to close the sink tab. People make blunder after blunder, and they don't understand the benefit in squandering water. A different group conflates the usage and need for water.

HAHAHA LAST PART OF THE WEEKLY: ESSAYYYY
Word count: 575 (Excluding Quotes)
UHHHH ignore the (s) instead of because if I did that makes it crossed-out text hahah

Pickwick: A Character Analysis

“Pickwick was an enormously wealthy customer who not only bought the very finest watches but often came upstairs to the family part of the house above the shop.” (Pg. 18) This is the very first mention of a character, who was nicknamed Pickwick, in the autobiography The Hiding Place by Corrie ten Boom. He was nicknamed Pickwick by Corrie and her sister Betsie due to his similarities to an illustration of a Dickens character. He was, “(s)hort, immensely fat, head bald as a Holland cheese, he was so wall-eyed that you were never quite sure whether he was looking at you or someone else- and as kind and generous as he was fearsome to look at.” (Pg. 18) Pickwick’s real name was Herman Sluring. He was an older gentleman who was proof that a person should not be judged simply based on their looks, but rather by their actions.

Since the autobiography was set during the second world war, it told of a period when Germans were persecuting Jews. The ten Booms saw this as wrong, and risked their lives to help everyone they could. Though it was a risk for him, too, Pickwick sent his own men to Corrie to teach her and the people she was protecting. Through stubborn determination, he made sure that Corrie learned all she needed to keep them safe. “A tall sallow-faced young man arrived from Pickwick one morning to teach me how to conduct the drills,” wrote Corrie. (Pg. 120) Pickwick was never one to complain, and he never hesitated when there was a good deed that needed to be done. He was constantly in support of the ten Booms, and was always coming up with new ways to help them.

Pickwick was a kind, caring man who loved children with all his heart; though he had to fight for them to love him due to his appearance. Corrie stated, “e loved children as much as Father did, but while children took to Father on sight, Pickwick had to win them.” (Pg. 27) He was a friend of the ten Booms family, and he was willing to do nearly anything for them. He was diligent in keeping them updated with news about their allies and supplied the family with vital information. Corrie stated that, “Pickwick said that the German doctor in charge of the prison hospital was a humane man who occasionally arranged a medical discharge.” (Pg. 128) He also set up several contacts for the ten Booms, which aided their success. Without him, all that they achieved would have been nearly impossible. “Through Pickwick, for example, we met the man at the central telephone exchange whose department handled orders to connect and disconnect lines,” wrote Corrie. (Pg. 112) He also gifted them their family radio, which continuously supplied them with information pertaining to the war.

Though Pickwick was a man who was considered to be particularly ugly, he disproved early misconceptions by his own actions. He was a man who proved that a person is not to be judged by their outside appearances. Corrie and her family were unbothered by his appearance, instead focusing on his personal traits. While his looks may have, at first, scared off others, they simply had to get a good look at the man’s heart to realize how trustworthy and true he really was. “ little shriek below told that Pickwick had arrived. used to forget, who loved him, what a shock the first sight of him could be to a stranger.” (Pg. 26) Pickwick was loved by the family because of his actions rather than his appearance.

In conclusion, Pickwick was a man who had beauty on the inside, even if outside it was considered to be lacking. He was a man who never stopped being kind, and was a man whose example we should all follow. He was just in heart and spirit, and so we should all be that way. Though Pickwick initially seemed to be simply a supporting character in The Hiding Place, he was actually a character who was more vital than was, at first, apparent. He was the person who brought everything together. He was good-spirited, and never ceased to attempt to cheer up and stubbornly encourage Corrie, ultimately leading to her success. Sometimes we feel angry or sad because someone has insulted us, but we should never let ourselves be discouraged by what others think of us simply due to our appearances. We must prove them wrong in the best way possible- by being the best version of ourselves that we can, and by never putting others down in retaliation.

Scratch Writing Camp Weekly #1 - March 2022

Myth ftw!

My weekly turned out sorta weird
Words total:2908

Weekly:

Part 1 335 words

Sleep Haiku:
Quiet stress is coming out of my head
You and your strict attitude, all cross and mean
Tells me to go to bed, right now.

School Acrostic:
School lies 5 blocks away from my house
Children chattering all around
Homework, tests and more surrounding
Oh god can I finish this
Oh crud can I get to class?
Luck

Stress Limerick:
The 16 million thoughts in my head
With adding pressure on my shoulder
They all collect more and more
To reach the point of Stressful Stressness
Why oh why did I deserve this?

Pressure Sestina:
I lie down in my bed
Thoughts collecting in my head
A blanket over my body
What should I be doing awake?

A cold shiver down my spine
Wind howling all outside
Why do I need to overdo?
Is it because of my stupidity?

School, life, other things too
I have so many things to do!
Homework, projects and much more!
Am I going to be ok?

My mother pressuring me to do things
Do this do that, pick up the socks!
Straight A’s are always in my sight
Will I be ok? I really might.

The rush of thoughts in my head
Why oh why do I deserve this?
Pressure collecting on my shoulders
Oh look there's a boulder

Can it crush all my pressure
Oh I hope so
Rush of voices in my brain
Thank god now all of it's gone.

Oh no, it’s just a dream
I still have more pressure
Can I get rid of it?

Oh no. More work surrounds my head
I can’t breathe the pressure buries me
I couldn’t see, or hear
If only I were better.
(That was terrible)

Water bottle Haiku
There laying on my desk
Stickers all around
Then I grab it
And make the drinking sound

Part 2 590 words

Why should you not put pressure on students? Students stress a lot when you out lots of pressure on them. Examples of this pressure is assigning too much work, too much chores at home, and making them get perfect scores of anything above a 90%. This stresses the students and it makes them work harder, though this can lead to depression and more. The student may start fighting back to the parents and might even start taking drugs or more. This pressure can even lead to a student hurting themselves. Teachers should also notify the students when the assignment is due, because if teachers notify them the day before this creates stress and since this puts students in a situation where the homework is due the next day. But, if the student decides to put the work off to the last minute, this is a problem for them. Procrastination is never a good thing. This means that you put work off to the last minute and it stresses the student to get it done. This has happened multiple times to me, such as putting off a important project that was 80% of my grade. This actually made me do better because I turned out getting first place in the science fair, and getting a 95% on the overall project. I also put off a 30% of my grade writing assignment, this also caused me and my partner to do better, I happened to get a 100%. Another example is when I put off my assignment and had to draw it all because my printer wasn’t working. I also happened to get a 7 out of 7. Though, this stress may be better for the student, since it makes them work harder. The work may not be as accurate as the parents pressure them to get, but at least they still did it. (If you met my parents you would know. They make me get straight A’s, they want me to get into a prestigious college or high school)

Stressing a lot also makes the brain get a little funky. This has the brain get stressed about everything and makes you more conscious. Some kids may have it as a problem of stressing, but then getting it done and stop stressing about everything. That’s not me. I apparently get everything done and still stress about life and other problems. If you wish, there are school counselors that can help with these problems, and phsycologists. There are also numbers that you can call to talk about stress or about your personal thoughts. This number takes you as an anonymous person and the person you are calling just listens. Some people have that case. If you just need someone to talk to, you can call a number that answers and listens to you talk. They don’t give you any suggestions, it just helps to tell someone what’s going on. Talking to someone always gets pressure off your chest for not telling your parent or guardian.

So this is why you need to get your homework done, and not procrastinate. Stressing about things can lead to people having depression, thoughts about hurting themselves, and to problems many other problems. This is also a tip for grown ups to not pressure their child as much and a tip for teachers to notify students the due date, and to be careful about assigning to much work. Keeping our students safe and having their mental health okay. Always stay safe, and sometimes don’t always follow your thoughts.

Part 3: 830 words

It's a quiet classroom, a little bit of talking
Curtains open
Lily: *raises her hand*]
Gavin: *whispers* There's the goody two shoes again.
Teacher: Yes?
Lily: Do we have any homework?
Teacher: Yes we do, also the Harris and Me packet is due tomorrow. Remember to do that. Science fair as well.

Part 4 Non Fi Piece: 1127 words
(It’s about water my friend told me to do it on Nevada I needed ideas.)

Water is decreasing. What to do? Nevada is in danger, we’re using too much water! How will we conserve this water?

I think that we should conserve this water. As you can see, Lake Mead’s water has decreased dramatically in the past few years. If you see, there is a mark where the water used to be, compare that to now, there’s a lot of difference. When Lake Mead was built, it was built over a town. The water used to cover this Ghost Town, but now, you can see it. The water level has decreased so much.

I think that we should get rid of unused turf. The grass that’s put on the side of the highway is never used. Do you ever see anyone step on it? Landscapers put it up for show and water it still. The water level is being decreased because of watering unused. According to Dave Johnson, he stated that they want people to water their grass once a week. If we remove a square foot of grass you can get paid 3 dollars. What this means is that people are trying to have this town remove the unused turf to conserve water. If all of us remove it, we can save 10% of our water. For example, a family in my neighborhood removed their turf yesterday. Now they don’t have to water their front lawn, and they save money for their water bill.

We should save our water by not keeping dirt down. Many people complained that there is so much dust from construction sites, that they made the construction workers put water down on the dirt! (That’s more work for them!) Using water keeps the dirt down, so the law is that you need to put water down every time you use the construction site. The water they use is clean and drinkable, this reduces our water level at lake mead. We should stop putting water down, it’s a waste. It will cause other people to complain though. People with asthma, stay away! According to Reviewjournal.com when the county dust control puts water on the dust, water gets wasted every second. About half a gallon is wasted per 30 seconds, that’s a lot of water! If we stop this, we’ll conserve water for future years. Which means that if a construction site is putting down water for an hour, about 60 gallons of water are wasted. A gallon is the size of a milk jug. For example, a few weeks ago, my family was driving past a construction site and saw that they were putting down gallons of water to keep the dust down. There’s a big truck that sprays water. It keeps down the dust, but the water gets wasted.

Leaky pipes are one problem. When your pipe leaks, you may not even know it, but since you don’t know, it can waste lots of water. The water is wasted and you can’t get it back. According to Dave Johnson, leaky pipes are one big problem people don’t even know if it’s going on. A video I watched also said that it depends on which leak you have whether it’s big or it’s small. If it’s a small leak, then it can waste about half a gallon per 3 minutes, but if it’s a big one, it’s wasting about 1 gallon per minute! Which means that any leak you have can end up you paying lots of money for your water bill, and it wastes lots of water from Lake Mead. For example, the video showed a leaky pipe. The way the guy found it? A leak detector. Leak detectors don’t cost that much money, and it can save your money from being spent on water bills.

In all, we should conserve our water for the future, we should use it for other occasions. If you do any of these things you will be helping Nevada. Will we be stuck in this drought forever? Maybe, but you still have to conserve water. Remember, we’re all getting water from One Well. Maybe you’ll try these things, maybe not, but either way, you’re helping our earth!

Second non fi piece:
(Another famous African American Barack Obama.)

Barack Hussein Obama II is the 44th president of the United States. His parents were white and African. He was mixed-race. Barack Obama’s parents were separated while he was an infant, but when he was 2, they divorced. His father went to return home to Kenya. Obama is best known for his presidency from 2009 to 2018. When he was 21 his father passed away in a car accident, but he was lucky that he visited him at least once for the first time. Obama admitted later that he felt weird being an African American in a white community, and that he felt like he never belonged to his father. Obama’s mother then traveled to Indonesia and remarried. He was sent to his grandparents and received very high grades in High School. Obama went to 2 colleges before Harvard. He met his wife at Harvard, Michelle Robinson, better known as Michelle Obama. They had 2 children after. Obama got elected for president in 2009 and swore in on January 20, 2009. Obama published his second book, titled “The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream” in 2006 which became a New York Times as well as amazon.com best seller. He announced his candidacy for president against Hillary Clinton in 2007 and defeated her in a close contest. IN November 2008, Obama won the election against the Republican candidate John McCain and was then sworn in as the 44th president of the United States. He faced various challenges in his term including a global economic crisis and two wars being fought aboard. Obama introduced several reforms such as the Affordable Care Act (or Obama Care, as it is more popularly known) which has received an equal measure of support and criticism, and the budget control act of 20-11 to contain excessive government spending. In many peoples opinions he was a great president of the United States of America. He took care of many people and tried to solve many situations going on in this world. To me he seems like a great president but I’m too young to vote. Barack Hussein Obama cares for his daughters very much because he stayed in Washington DC for his girls to finish up school and to keep their friends. His wife (Michelle Obama) supported him too. When he stopped his presidency his last speech of being president stated that he loved his family very much and that his girls are very mature and that he loves them. Everybody got emotional in this part of the speech.

Scratch Writing Camp Weekly #1 - March 2022

Part One: Poetry

Poem 1: Farmhouse Kitchen (onomatopoeia)
Pop goes the kettle on a summer's afternoon.
Then comes the rattle, the hiss and the boom.
A vacuum cleaner hums as it cleans the wooden floor.
A mop makes a squeak as it slides past the door.
The broom makes a crash as it knocks into a wall.
Then comes the smash as the toaster takes a fall.
The sink makes a gurgle as I pull the plug.
Then a pig from outside makes an oink in the mud.
And as the symphony of sounds is drowned out by song
I turn up my music and dance right along.

Poem 2: Ocean of deep blue (Acrostic)
Observant and watching
Courageous, bold and brave
Enchanting, beautiful and captivating
Alluring, tempting and irresistible
Noble, grand yet magnanimous

Original, genuine and true
Fantastic, like the brightest blue

Discerning, intelligent and wise
Engaging, delightful and winsome
Elegant, graceful and ascetic
Picturesque, scenic and pleasing

Blessed, sacred and true
Limitless, a boundless plane
Unforgettable, ever since its debut
Enriching, enhancing, causing gain.

Poem 3: Ocean (Haiku)
Deep, Deep sea of blue
Ocean, foam, sand, sea, water
Waves dancing with me.

Poem 4: Dragon (Kennings)
the wings of fire,
wide and strong,
breathing smoke,
scales bronze,
hiding in mountains,
Claws like prongs,
Hot as fire,
A heart of song.

Poem 5: Oh little bird (free verse)
Sing to me, Oh little bird
Sing your song of joy
Give to me your unknown words
Give me your voice.

Fly up high, Oh little bird
And brush the clouds so soft
Fly with might and all your worth
Fly until you're lost.

Sweet and wise, Oh little bird
grow till you are tall
Stretch your wings and dive my bird
Glide until you fall.

I will catch you little bird
Keep you safe and warm
I will guide you home my bird
Sing for you this song.

Poem 6: I am (free verse)
I am the night
I am the day
I am the fight
I pave the way

I sing the songs
I paint the sky
I watch the birds, Flying by

I write the words
I shed the tears
I walk alone with all my fears

I am a girl, a woman at that
I see our paths
I fade to black.

Part two: Persuasive Text
Argument: Pens are better than Pencils
Funny Note: I actually prefer pencils over pens

What's better for writing: Pencils or pens? This is an age-old argument that baffles many. They both have their benefits and there is nothing wrong with using either of them. Pencils are quite a bit older; even the modern pencil beats the pen by around 100 years, but old isn’t always better. I strongly believe that Pens are better than Pencils. After all, the pen is mightier than the sword (and we all know a pencil would get cut). And while a Pencil may be easier to use for younger children, it is a better stationary item overall.

Pens are more durable and proven to last much longer. A pencils lifespan usually ranges from 6 months to two years, while pens have been known to work for over 100 years. Of course the average pen usually lasts 2-7 years, but depending on the type and care you give a pen it will last much longer and be more cost effective in the long run. Pens Ink is also far more durable than the graphite of a pencil and much less likely to wear off once the pen has set to the paper. The ink of a pen is also useful when you get caught in the rain or spill your drink bottle, it won't run or fade if it comes into contact with water, which is very useful and is a skill the pencil lacks.
The next place where the pen outdoes the pencil is in clarity. Writing Done in Pencil is known to be sketchy and hard to read while pen is clear and bright in contrast to paper. It constantly creates even lines and has been proven to appeal more to people because it stands out and looks more organized. They generally look neater, and because pens don’t need to be sharpened, they have more consistency.
The pen is far more professional and can be used on legal documents as well as important papers or essays. In fact, in many situations a teacher will ban the use of a pencil.
Another downside to pencils is their limited range. Pens come with a much larger variety of brands, types, inks and colors, which is useful because it makes it easier to find the right pen for you.
Now some of you might be wondering about mistakes. I will admit that pencils can be useful in this area; but the pen is not beaten here either. You can easily purchase erasable pens or use white out; even crossing out mistakes is an easy alternative and much faster than rubbing out words in pencil.

Overall, both stationery items are useful and important to society; they both have pros and cons and are incredible inventions. But as I have shown, pens have the upper hand in almost all areas and I think we all agree that they are the better choice for writing. I hope you can now see that pens are superior and that they will always come out on top of pencils.

Part 3: script writing

Original story:
“Lou wake up you need to prepare”. I sigh in response to my mothers call. I slowly slide out of bed rubbing my eyes. “what for” I yell at her as a late reply but I feel my heart skip a beat when I remember why I need to prepare. My battle is today. I began to pace up and down my room but stop when I walk past the mirror. I gaze at my reflection. I want to prove myself. I need to. It’s a factor that would benefit me in the future, and not just that I had a legacy to continue. Both my parents had won battles against their beasts, it had been the same for many generations. Those reasons scare me of course but the thought of being killed by a beast in my first proper battle is terrifying. My mother walks into my room and stands at the doorway “come, we have much to do before the afternoon” I nod and follow her down the corridor feeling my stomach twist at the reminder of this afternoon.

I sit in the kitchen eating my cockatrice eggs, while my parents run me through the list of things I need to do in preparation. “We must collect your battle garments from Mrs. Darren in half an hour and have you dressed and looking presentable for the pre battle ceremony by twelve. You should wash yourself as stretch now before we leave” I nod as my parents continue to list small things that need to be done.

After finishing my breakfast I bathe and have my hair done in a plaited bun. My parents leave to see Mrs. Darren and pick up my garments from the tailors whilst I continue my preparation. I get out my running boots to wear with whatever clothing has been chosen for the contestants this year and wait quietly.

Tora our kitsune is sitting next to me, swishing her tail up and down. I try to focus on her to keep my mind off this afternoon but I end up thinking about proving myself. I don’t have to ponder on it for long because my parents arrive with my clothing earlier than I thought they would. My parents give me black pants and a loose white shirt along with a leather skirt. I study them for a moment then I get dressed quickly and put on my boots. As soon as I am ready we leave for the pre battle ceremonies. They take place in the arena and consist of all the contestants eating a meal and choosing a weapon.

Once we arrive I line up with the 9 other children. My parents give me a kiss on the forehead and tell me that they will see me when I'm in the arena. Once everyone has said their goodbyes we get led inside to a table and are told to sit. I sit between a boy and a girl both around my height. We sit quietly for a few minutes until a young woman enters the room and tells us to eat. I think everyone takes it as a signal to start talking because suddenly conversation broke out and the girl sitting next to me is starting a conversation.

“hi, I'm Norah” she says with a smile, it takes me a little by surprise but I reply anyway “ohh I'm Lou”. I study the girl. She has brown hair like me but it’s a little darker and her green eyes would stand out in contrast to my dark blue ones. “What beast did you get?I got the juvenile kraken” I ask her with genuine interest. She seems to smile at that “I got the juvenile thunderbird” she says calmly. I look at her in surprise, there were only 3 large beasts each year. Of course they were all juveniles or younglings but getting one is rare.

We start to talk excitedly with the whole table. So far I know that a boy names Callum has a leucrocuta as his beast, there is a boy who got a gargoyle. I think his name is Thomas. I also spoke with Laura, a girl with red hair in tight braids, she got a wampus cat. I am halfway through eating my meal and I realise that I haven't spoken to the boy sitting next to me yet. He seems nice enough but he has a kind of look across his face that puts me off a little. I make the decision not to talk to him when he began a conversation with the whole table.

“My name is Liam,” he says with pride. I'm not sure who asks him what beast he got but someone does, and he starts talking about how because he was given a wyvern and that means the sorters think highly of him. He was bragging for a good 5 minutes about it and I decide I don’t like him much. The wyvern Isn’t even an adult yet but he seems to think he is special. Soon after his little presentation people finish up their food and suddenly we are being shown to the judges. The battles are about to begin.

Part 4: Non-fiction
Piece 1: narrative writing

From the point of view of a noblewoman in the Han dynasty after the end of the war of states period
We are out the front of our new home. They are here and as much as I should be inside caring for the children my husband wants me out here. So here I am standing quietly just behind my husband. Staying silent as he speaks to the official. I am as unimportant as a peasant in this situation and I do not want to draw attention to myself, regardless of how important the situation is. As I understand we have been forced to come to this new house. It isn't just us either, I think all noble families were required to move closer to the emperor after he ended the war of states. It worries me a little, the idea of his power and control suffocates me. Of course I do not understand much of the reasoning but my husband is concerned and that makes me feel the same way.

The official leaves and my husband signaled for me to go inside. I quickly do as he tells me. I was heading to my new quarters when I heard the whisper of my children coming from a spare room. I walk in and stand in the doorway. They stop talking and look at me. One of them opens their mouth to speak but I hush all 3 youngsters. The two girls pause immediately but my son continues. He asks me why our books are being taken and burned and I quickly remark that they hold knowledge that opposes the emperor. I worry about the way he questions everything. If he asked something like that in public we could be killed but I feel that I have satisfied his question. But even though I begin to leave the room he continues. “I hear father's friends' anger over this'' he states calmly “is our knowledge being taken as the scholars say?” He asks with a little less confidence. I look at him sternly ”do not suggest that our emperor keeps us ignorant, this is for the better of our people'' I say sternly. But somewhere deep inside me I know that our knowledge is being burned and that our people killed. I know we are being left ignorant and I worry for the future of my children. I worry for my future as I never have before and I worry for my husband because I feel that if he is not careful we could all end up at the bottom of a pit.

Part 2: Persuasive Text
Notes: Don’t take this personally at all (I live in Australia so that's why I chose Australia) all countries are just as great as each other and I didn't mean to offend anyone in the making of this.

Hello Everyone, today I am going to discuss Which Country is the best. I strongly Believe that Australia is the best country in the world and while there are many great countries on our planet none of them are as good as this one (but I don’t really think I need to prove anything as this is a fact). We have a wonderful environment and great tourist attractions, our community is diverse and everyone is welcome and we are a safe country and have many great opportunities.

Firstly, we have a wonderful environment with many beautiful and untouched places as well as great tourist attractions. In fact, Australia is globally famous for its nature which is no surprise
Considering that we have over 10000 beaches, Tasmania has the world's cleanest air. I mean look around we have the Daintree the world's oldest rainforest the great barrier reef and not to mention our diverse wildlife

To continue with that we have one of the world's most diverse, multicultural and friendly communities. As a fact, Australia is the most ethnically diverse country on the globe. And as a country we are a disability friendly destination. We care for each other and are a friendly bunch of people, always saying morning or giving a wave as we walk by.

As my final argument, I would like to mention how we are one of the world’s safest countries and hold many great opportunities. The EIU voted Melbourne as the most liveable city 7 years in a row and our capital cities always make it into the top ten. We have no wars going on in our country and are also further away from other countries making us less involved in attacks from other countries and making it harder for disease to spread which is shown by covid-19 and its late arrival to Australia. But our opportunities are vast, we have one of the worlds best education systems and have many jobs to offer and are a safe haven for refugees and asylum seekers.

However, despite all these facts, Some people might say that countries like the USA are better because of how dangerous our animals are. I mean really unless you're crazy it’s pretty hard to get killed by anything around here. But we know that Australia is the best country.
but despite having one of the world's highest concentrations of deadly animals we have one of the lowest death rates as we average around 25 animal-related deaths a year while the US averages on around 230. And really how can you deny that we have some of the cutest critters in town?

To conclude, Australia is the best country in the world because of it’s a wonderful environment and great tourist attractions, because it’s community is diverse and everyone is welcome, and because it is a safe country and have many great opportunities. So overall I think it is easy to see that Australia is the place to be.

Alright, I'm kinda proud of these:

Magical Dragon(Acrostic)
Moonlight filters through the
apple trees’ leaves.
Gracefully above them
in the sky,
climbing higher in the night’s cool
air, swirling, twirling,
looping, swooping, the
dragon dives and
roars, swooping up again.
Agilely performing twists and turns,
gliding slowly away, ‘till it’s just a speck
on the horizon.
Night goes on like the dragon flew.
Silently.
HAIKUS
Flower
Pushing through the soil
Slowly turning towards the sun
A new flower blooms

Sunrise
The sky glows like fire
The sun slowly rises up
A new day begins.

Snow
White fluff drifting down
Making mounds, covering ground
Like tiny fairys

Bailey(pantoum)
Bailey gazes into your eyes,
Loving, trusting, there.
His spirit flies up in the skies,
For us he will always care.

Loving, trusting, there:
From before I was born, all through my life,
For us he will always care.
He had so many abilities, like a swiss army knife

From before I was born, all through my life,
He was there, with his squeaky orange toy,
He had so many abilities, like a swiss army knife
Bailey was always such a good boy.

He was there, with his squeaky orange toy,
His memory we’ll carry upon our backs,
He was always such a good boy.
And hope that our hearts can hold the cracks.

His memory we’ll carry upon our backs,
How he gazed into our eyes,
And hope that our hearts can hold the cracks,
As free forever, his spirit flies.
In case you hadn't guessed, bailey was my dog)

Seasons(Etheree)
The flower blooms in spring, bringing beauty.
Elegant petals, like velvet cloth.
A sign of winter receding
A sign of coming summer
Summer passes quickly
Fall begins too soon
The flower wilts
Dying fast
Until…
Gone.

This one I forgot the type but it's a poem:
Walls of icy stone,
Listen to the moan.
Never young or old,
Tales forgotten once told.
Fire in the heart of ice,
Nothing there that’s nice.
Evil at the start,
But warmth lies in the heart.

Mine's about the importance of traveling:
531 words

Studying abroad or traveling abroad expands a person’s appreciation and understanding of other people and cultures. Those who have traveled have made a connection with a location, the people and the culture that they take home with them and can change how they respond to news about those locations. It can also create a new understanding of one’s own country and how it is perceived by others and talked about in their news.

There is an intrinsic appeal to travel and when one leaves one’s comfort zone, that is when growth becomes possible, and even likely. By taking the step to experience new and different locations and cultures, one opens their eyes to those places and people. It is only through broadening our horizons that our eyes can be opened and our point of view become less narrow.

Take, for example someone who has never been to another country and does not stop to consider that certain brands which they use on a regular basis are not actually created in their own country, but elsewhere in the world. Someone who loves chocolate may not even realize that Nestle is a Swiss company. It may take some time to start to think about all the products that one never considered as anything special that are actually imports.

Also, there is the news. It is certainly evident that in a country as large as the USA, the bulk of what is reported is from within the country. When one travels somewhere else, take Europe, for example, it is obviously different content on the news and reporting about stories in the USA may have a slightly different perspective.

Often, people in the USA who speak with an accent or have a harder time communicating in English are looked down upon or thought to be less intelligent because of their broken English. What many fail to stop and consider is that this means that they can speak one or more other languages in addition to English, a trait that many do not share. What they deserve is respect. Those who travel can find themselves in an environment where their skin tone makes them stand out in the crowd, where the signs and the spoken word are not ones they can readily understand, and it can have a great impact.

By choosing to step out of one’s comfort zone and visit other places on this planet, it brings the world closer, it makes global events personal, and fosters understanding. What we need is for more people to take an interest in helping the global community so that we can see the end to war, progress in favor of protecting our environment and greater appreciation for one another. There are exchange programs through high schools, universities and colleges, as well as some sister city exchanges between towns. Other programs that foster global leadership like Up with People and Semester at Sea, as well as shorter programs like EF Tours, among others, with a goal of creating experiences that foster a global understanding. More people need to have these experiences and prioritize learning about others who are not just like themselves to create a better world for all.

THIS IS BAD THE STORY I USED WAS AN OLD ONE AND IT'S SO BAD BUT IT'S THE ONE I FOUND I'M SORRY
Rosa looks at the pet shop window from inside her blue Honda. She loved that Honda. It had been a gift to her from her dad when she turned 16 and got her driver’s license. Getting out of the car, she stares at the pet shop for a moment before walking over and going inside. Inside the pet shop, she admires fish and stares at hamsters before walking over to a man who is re-shelving cat toys.
“Hello, my name is Rosa. I’m looking for a puppy. Can you help me?”
“Yes I can. I’m John, by the way.”
He leads her over to the kennels. Six puppies are in the kennels, one has black and brown spots, one is all black, one is a Dalmatian, one is albino, one is calico, and one is grey with brown and black dots along his back. This one runs up to the kennel door and bounces around, tripping himself on gangly legs, and it stood up and started chasing its tail. Laughing, Rosa chooses him, naming him Rocky.
~~~
“We’re going to have a lot of fun together, Rocky.”
She informs him in the car. She drives home slowly, humming to herself. When she gets home, she pulls Rocky’s crate out of the car and carries it inside.
“Welcome home, Rocky.”
~~~
Rosa goes to the library and checks out three books—The City of Ember, How to Write a Good Persuasive Essay, and How to Train Your Puppy. She stuffs them in a purple bag and walks home.
She opens the door to a huge mess. Pottery shards of a large pot she had bought last week for a hanging vine were scattered over the floor, and dirt was everywhere—Puppy track going through it. Rosa runs to Rocky’s crate and finds that she didn’t latch it all the way—Rocky himself is on his bed, chewing on the remains of the plant.
“ROCKY! You’d better hope that vine wasn’t poisonous!”
Rosa snapped, shoving him in his crate, snatching away the vine, and she begins to clean up the mess.
~~~
Rosa is reading The City of Ember in her room when something occurs to her. The door is ajar, and all’s quiet outside her bedroom. Getting up, she jogs downstairs to find Rocky eating the last of a stick of butter. When he sees her, he jumps up and runs. She quickly corners him, and he makes eye contact with her and pees on the floor.
“ROCKYYYYYYYY”
Rosa moans, and shoves him outside.
~~~
Rosa has taught Rocky to sit (though he doesn’t do it all the time she asks him to) and now she’s teaching him to stay.
“Stay. Stayyyy… st-ACK!”
Rocky runs ascroos the room and stolen the treat from her hand.
“Oh, COME ONNNNNNN WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?”
Rosa picks up her puppy training book and flips through it, while Rocky sneaks upstairs and grabs her stuffed bear, Beans. Jumping off the bed, he begins to chew. Rosa walks in and screams. Roughly picking up Rocky, she yanks Beans away from him and shoves him in his crate. Rocky whines.
“Oh, no. You aren’t getting ANY sympathy from me.” Rosa storms out of the room, Beans still in her hand.
~~~
Rosa has taught Rocky to sit and stay. She takes him over to her best friend, Kate’s house.
“Hey Rosa! Ooooh you brought Rockyyyy c’mon c’mon c’mon let’s go take him out insideee!!!”
Laughing, Rosa takes the crate inside and lets Rocky out. They throw a ball for him while the talk.
“So you know the book you asked me about last time you were over? I got it for you!”
“REALLY?!? Oh Kate, you’re the best! How can I ever repay you?”
“Bring Rocky over more!”
~~~
Rosa is reading her book, smiling, when the phone rings. She puts the book down and answers it. While she’s talking on the phone, the book falls off of the chair and Rocky sees it. He starts to chew on it. Rosa talks for a long time, and Rocky absolutely SHREDS the book. Rosa hangs up the phone and turns around.
“ROCKY! HOW DARE YOU! BAG DOG! NO! GET OUT OF HERE, AND NO DINNER! I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU RUINED IT!”
She starts to pick up the torn remnants of the book off the floor. Rocky slinks out the back door and runs. Rosa looks up.
“NO! Rocky, WAIT!”
Rocky runs away, tail turning the corner, and is gone. Rosa runs back to her house, runs to her room, collapses on her bed and cries. Kate comes over to see Rocky, finds her, gets her to calm down, and they brainstorm a plan.
“Posters.”
Kate decides.
“Posters?”
“Yeah, posters. We can make wanted signs and someone will see him!”
“O-okay.”

OUTSIDE PET SHOP—MORNING
ROSA gets out of blue Honda and look up at pet store
ROSA (voice over)
(Deep breath)
Okay. Let’s do this

ROSA walks into the pet shop. She walks over to a man wearing a silver name tag who is re-shelving cat toys. This is JOHN.
JOHN
(adjusts his name tag)
Hello. How can I help you today?
ROSA
I’m looking for a puppy.
JOHN
Okay! Follow me.
JOHN leads ROSA to the kennels.
One puppy runs over and tries to climb up the bars, but falls over, and tries again. The other dogs just wag their tails.
ROSA
(smiles and points to the energetic puppy)
I’ll take that one. And I’ll name it Rocky.

INSIDE ROSA’S HOME—1 hour later
ROSA opens the crate and ROCKY comes out.
ROSA
Welcome home, Rocky
ROCKY
(Yawns)
ROSA
(shakes her head and smiles)
Oh, you.
ROCKY runs out of sight of the camera.

INSIDE ROSA’S BEDROOM – AFTERNOON
ROSA is sitting on the bed reading a book titled ‘How to train your puppy’ a loud crash interrupts her, followed by a yip
ROSA puts down the book and runs into the other room, and then stops short. A flower pot lays broken on the floor, with dirt and the plant scattered all around. ROCKY is laying on his bed, chewing on a piece of the plant. ROSA sighs.

INSIDE ROSA’S BEDROOM – around a day later
ROSA is reading when there is a loud crash.
ROSA
(groans)
Not again.
ROSA walks into the other room. ROCKY is eating butter out of a tub he got from off the counter.
ROSA
HEY! Bad, Rocky, bad dog!
ROCKY
(looks at Rosa and pees)
ROSA
Nu-uh! Outside!
IN ROSA’S KITCHEN
ROSA is holding a treat over ROCKY’s head.
ROSA
Rocky, sit! Sit! SIT!
ROCKY finally sits.
ROSA
(gives him treat)
Good boy Rocky! Now stay.
(Walks across the room with the treat in her hand)
ROCKY runs across the room and eats the treat without waiting for ROSA to finish crossing
ROSA
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?
(Sighs and shakes her head and goes over to her puppy training book. Meanwhile, we see ROCKY sneaking upstairs and jumping on ROSA’S bed, and grabbing the teddy bear that sits on it, jumps down and begins to chew.)
LATER
ROSA walks in the room, and sees ROCKY chewing on the remains of a stuffed bear.
ROSA
NO! Rocky, STOP! BAD DOG BAD!
(pulls remnants of bear away and shoves Rocky into his crate)
UGH!
ROCKY
(whines)
ROSA
No. You’re not getting ANY pity from me!
ROSA storms off.

WE SEE ROSA AND ROCKY IN MULTIPLE SCENES, AND ROSA SLOWLY TEACHES ROCKY TO SIT AND STAY

ROSA walks into a friend’s house carrying ROCKY’s crate. A girl welcomes her in with a wave. This is KATE.
ROSA sets down ROCKY’s crate and opens it. ROCKY stretches and climbs out. ROSA and KATE sit on the couch and throw a ball for ROCKY, who happily chases it.
KATE
Remember last time, when you asked about that book?
ROSA
Yeah!
KATE
(Removes book from behind her back)
Tada! A brand-new copy!
ROSA
(gasps and hugs Kate)
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
KATE
It’s yours, Rosa!
ROSA
I… Don’t know how to thank you enough!
KATE
Bring Rocky over more!
(laughs)
ROSA
Absolutely!

ROSA is sitting in the kitchen the next morning, reading her new book when the doorbell rings. She sets down the book and goes to answer it.
ROCKY enters the room. You can hear ROSA talking in the background. ROCKY spots the book, jumps up onto the chair, grabs the book, takes it back to his bed, and chews on it.
ROSA walks back into the room smiling, and then notices ROCKY.
ROSA
(starts crying)
NO! Rocky you jerk! IT’S RUINED! NO FOOD FOR YOU TODAY! DO YOU HEAR ME? NO. FOOD. FOR. YOU.
ROCKY
(whimpers)
ROSA storms in the front door, not bothering to close it, and goes to her room. ROCKY steps slowly toward the open door, and then runs.
ROSA sees him run and disappear.
ROSA
No, Rocky, WAIT!
ROCKY is gone.

ROSA is crying on her bed when KATE comes in.
KATE
What’s wrong, Rosa?
ROSA
The book you gave me is ruined and Rocky is gone and it’s all my fault!
KATE
Woah woah woah. Slow down. Did you say Rocky ran away?!?
ROSA
(sniffs)
Yes
KATE.
Okay. I have a plan to get him back.
ROSA
what is it?
KATE
(smiles)
Step one: Stop crying.
Step two: Make posters.
ROSA
Posters? How will that help?
KATE
You know, missing posters. ‘Have you seen this dog? Named rocky, grey with spots, big goof, puppy, missing. If so, call Rosa. Reward.
ROSA
Oh! That’s a great idea! Thanks so much, Kate. I owe you big.
Kate
No problem. Let’s get some posters made!

Camping in the Mountains
Up in the mountains, there is a place called Twisted Pine Lodge. The Twisted Pine is named that because it went up a little bit (maybe a foot,) and then went to the right and then up again. It was such a right angle, that you could’ve lain down on it. (At least as far as I can tell from the stump, fallen trunk and pictures…) The Twisted Pine was cut down, but peeking out of the earth, near the stump, is the Twisted Pine Jr.
Once, I went camping there w/ my Girl Scout Troop there. Me, Avery and Daddy went out of the cabin towards a HUGE tree we called the “Playground Tree.” It was easy to climb, had a branch we had hung a swing from and next to it, a fallen tree trunk.
We looked down and just past the tree, slightly down the hill, in the clearing, a herd of elk or deer (I don’t know which,) were walking past. It was a herd of about 50, the Buck, A lot of doe, and a large handful of fawns.
They walked by, and we stood there for a while, watching them go by. Daddy took out his phone and took some pictures, and we stood there watching them, so many, plod by, until they are gone.

The Condo and the River
We have a condo up in the mountains. It is on the top floor, so we can look down and see a lot of stuff, like fly fishermen. Once, we saw a moose.
The deck isn’t made out of wood, but some Trex. Sometimes, if you go barefoot, you get splinters, because it has tiny wood pieces in it. We have to shovel it in the winter, because if too much snow builds up, the deck might break and then we would be in trouble.
When you look down, the first thing you’ll see is the river. Gushing by, pushing against rocks, Slow in some parts and raging in others. Reflecting the sun like a thousand tiny mirrors.

Skiing
In the winter, we go skiing in Winter Park Ski Resort. We whiz down the hill and fly over jumps and weave through trees. The cold winter air stings my nose as I zoom along.
The chairlifts bring us up the hill. One chairlift, called ‘Panoramic’ goes up to about 12,060 feet above sea level. I call it “The tippy top of the mountain,” even though ‘The Cirque’ and a lot of other mountains are even higher.
The Cirque is a double black, (25% of the terrain is expert, and 75% of it is most difficult,) and I have skied it. It is really

Scratch Writing Camp Weekly #1 - March 2022

Part I - Poetry:
i chose blackout, haiku, pastoral, limerick, and free verse (x2) poetry.

haiku:

reach for the stars, dear
the fabric of our making
and return with nothing

pastoral:

the
flowers
with their sweet
saccharine smell
and with their nectarean
gifts. living along sweet everlasting bliss

limerick:

there was a cat
he owned a baseball bat
if you didn't respect his boundaries… smack!
the town people thought he was quite wack
But he really was just trying to protect the nice rat
(That was weird)

Free verse:

Misery and Self-consciousness walk into a bar.
Sit themselves down,
Order up a drink,
And open a tab, which we all know,
Only one of them is paying.
Misery gets high,
Self-consciousness gets lost,
We call them back home.
Because we all know that they're all that we've really got.

When I was ten, I started to realize,
That my house was not a home.
Just a dandelion house,
With venom-tipped words,
Tying me to silver tipped cords.

As I grew, the colors faded.
The people lost their compassion.
Nights spent yelling, over even the oddest of things.
The dogs.
The organization of the pantry.
And sometimes that the marriage wasn't working.
But the two of them couldn't leave the other.
I thought it was because it went against their ways.
So I was stuck, listening to curses and slurs thrown around.

When I was eleven, middle school came to me.
Open arms awaiting and a crooked smile on his face,
I knew I was in for something as I learned in this odd place

Stuck in the house again

Scores rolled out, handed to my family.
Mainly straight-As, only three B's.
As I showed them with a smile that sat firmly on my face,
All I heard were negatives, negatives.
I am better than this
Negatives, Negatives.
I had to try harder.
Negatives, Negatives
Why couldn't I hear just a single positive?

Back to school again

Every move was made self-consciously,
Every word analyzed, re-thought,
Words did not come out freely,
They only came out carefully.

So Misery and Self-Consciousness enter a bar,
Sit themselves down,
Order up a drink,
And open a tab, which we all heard,
Only one of them was paying.
Misery gets high,
Self-Consciousness gets lost,
But I keep calling them back.
Because they were all I ever really got.

Free verse two:

Bottle up your emotions, until you learn to swallow the tears and relish the burn.
Le loup n’hésite pas à prendre l’agneau
'The wolf has no hesitation in taking the lamb'
School your face to remain blank,
Learn to freeze your body, and take deep breaths without shuddering.
Smile until its real enough, its all in your head
Dreams became an escape, hiding from reality
Running far from my problems
But they always catch up to me

blackout poetry:
o.g. writing is touching spirit bear, page 79:

He focused on the full moon. It held meaning he could not remember, but he kept staring up. Later, he remembered what had happened. He raised his head, called into the dark, “ Are you okay? ”

(I'm happy to have made that book into something DECENT. I really disliked reading it for class *cri*)

Part II - Essay:

Stress. Its a factor in many failings of society today, whether it be because the person who is overwhelmed is under immense pressure, or simply because the person is facing extreme expectations, it is hard to operate under stress. We tend to make the wrong decisions, simply because others have influenced us to believe so.

Stress is caused by a variety of different things. It can be either a need to get an A, or, a desire to have someone else approve of your work. Why people are stressed depends on the situation, but, one thing is for sure: its all negative. Stress can deteriorate mental health, by putting more and more of a burden on someone. Most people stress about meeting expectations, about how others will perceive them; and this can mainly be solved if we entered a room with open minds, without any prejudice as to who someone is or any accusatory thoughts that pin someone down as something we can't even confirm they are or are not. Stressing about getting something right might actually make you blank out, and get it wrong, a scientist once reported. And we all know under this immense burden, we all get something wrong, whether it be a name, or a quiz answer.

So, as mentioned previously, stress clearly is a problem to people. It doesn't allow us to operate at our full potential. And it makes us think of ourselves lesser than we should. Thank you.

(A/N: don't make fun of my essay I haven't had to write one in forever, cause my English teacher in all honestly is no good. Our state test is coming up and we still haven't learnt the standards for our grade level!)

Part III: Script

Well, welcome home!

This is certainly quite…

Lovely? Home-y? Cottagecore?

…Interesting.

Well, interesting how?

Interesting as in new. But a good new.

Well, of course it'll be new. But that's good! We'll grow into it, make memories in it! And someday, when I'm not here for you anymore, this home will be yours, to share with your sister!

That makes it sound like you're planning on leaving us.

I'll try my best not to…

…g'night dad…sleep well.

G'Night peep. ((A/N: Peep is the daughters old nickname))

oh…

I should get rid of this-!

You should get rid of what, exactly?

i- no, its nothing really- no please don't look!

[We are left on a cliffhanger. ((a/n: it ends good, don't worry. keep reading))

Its good to see you again, but might I ask for the reason for calling us so suddenly back home..?

Yeah, you sounded just like you did when ma died so…

no, no, it isn't bad! Actually, your brother has something to say.

Actually… yeah. I'm your brother. Surprise..?

Part IV: Two pieces of Non-fi writing
