Scratch for Wii U

Switch would've been more reasonable, but consoles aren't the platform coding goes on in, so showing of Scratch there makes little logical sense

LordOfMuffins wrote:

Nintendo has pretty much dropped support for the Wii U as they are no longer releasing titles for it or selling it in the first place. I'm not sure the Scratch Team even has the power to do that anyways.

Scratch for Wii U

Hmm, nice suggestion, but semi support. You could use the internet browser. And don't judge me. I am a former owner of a Wii U (currently a PS4 owner). The internet browser does support HTML5, so you could use Scratch 3.0 for this. I don't know why people need to use scratch on a console. If you really want to, you might need to get an extension that allows the buttons to be put on the blocks that are triggered by key presses:
Left analog stick
Right analog stick
A, B, Y and X buttons
Directional keys
ZL trigger
ZR trigger
L bumper
R bumper
+ button
- button

You might want this too:
when amiibo connected :: events hat
Overall, semi support, because there is no need for scratch on game consoles.

Scratch for Wii U

Nintendo focuses on videogames on their own consoles, and rarely create project-developing games. The last real time they've done so was last century, and the one partial exception is Super Mario Maker.

Nintendo has also given the WiiU the cold shoulder by releasing an incompatible Nintendo Switch, which is an improvement to the WiiU console, which would give the Switch a better shot - while it's still low.

The WiiU was perfectly capable, it's just no one bought it.

It's dead even though it didn't deserve to die this way.
As with the lack of benefit, I agree. Nintendo would most likely want a profit, which would only be made if it's licensed/costs money, which I'm sure Scratch would not agree with.

No support, they're already working on app versions of Scratch and trying to take it off flash so it works on phones/tablets/mobile devices.
Yeah, Scratch 3.0 is going to have the editor redone in HTML, allowing it to be used on the Internet Browsers for the Switch (if it has one) and the WiiU (which I know has one.)

LionHeart70 wrote:

I also don't think it's that useful or is going to be used much at all.
The concept of developing games and projects is cool, but yeah, developing a specialized version (re-done in the WiiU's programming language) and going through licensing and such to have it cost money isn't something that the Scratch Team would likely consider.

LionHeart70 wrote:

Not to mention that I have no idea how they're going to make Scratch for Nintendo devices..
Either the Internet Browser can be used to read HTML, or a specialized version done top-down could be developed (which is tedious.)

Yeah, hopefully Scratch 3.0 can be friendly to such devices, because using Scratch on a console/mobile device is a pain at the moment.

LordOfMuffins wrote:

Well they can certainly bring up the idea and possibly receive help by publishers, licensing, and such, but that's just too complicated, and no one knows if this would work.

I'd go with an app on a phone/mobile device more than this, but that would be overcome by Scratch 3.0's HTML aspect.

I'm sure Nintendo would be open to a concept, but they would likely make it cost money, and modify it so that it's much more simpler (scale it down to am game console version of Scratch Jr. or something.)

Scratch for Wii U

1. This is old
2. This is rejected:

Za-Chary* wrote:

2.7 Scratch for video game consoles
The Scratch Team does not have the resources to put a Scratch editor onto a video game console. This includes making a Scratch editor for Nintendo Switch, 3DS, Xbox, and Playstation consoles.

However, the ability to connect gaming controllers to a computer or tablet to use for Scratch is NOT rejected. You can discuss it on this topic.
