Add nicknames, they would be changable in the Account Settings. It would be very useful, and like usernames, only one nickname can be used by one person, so two people would not have the same nickname. The @ thing would work with nicknames, and they would appear in place of the regular username, with the regular username below it. That way, the usernames would not be changed, and all posts with a changed nickname would change to the correct one. So if someone's nickname was Potato, and someone posted @Potato in a comment, then the nickname was changed to Tomato, the comment would change to @Tomato

Interesting idea. I semi-support this. It would be cool to see this, but I could see that the nicknames might block users from making a username that they like because the name is already someone else's nickname.

This is my signature, which shows up every time I post and is automatic. To make a signature of your own, locate the “Change your signature” option in the bottom left of the Discussion Home.
I am nothing if not consistently inconsistent.
Snap! is a website that offers block coding like Scratch, but also offers the creation of your own blocks and writing JavaScript functions. The adventurous should consider checking it out!
Potentially useful tutorials and topic coverage
If you want to see a new tutorial added to this, feel free to leave a suggestion on my profile.

They could remove/replace certain letters, like an a would become a q. Or they could add slightly more letters, like Potatoo.

This has been rejected by the Scratch Team.
7.1 Changing usernames
If a user could change his or her username (or even set a certain “nickname”), this could be very confusing for the Scratch community, especially for those following that user. In addition, this would make moderation of the website more difficult because it would be harder for the Scratch Team to keep an eye on what a user may be doing. It could also be hard on the servers. The Scratch Team has allowed username changes only on very rare occasions, such as if the username contained inappropriate or revealing content. Generally the Scratch Team does not change usernames on request (such as “I do not like my current username anymore”).
Here is a specific post explaining more about it: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/320919/?page=3#post-3355466

This is my forum signature! On a forum post, it is okay for Scratchers to advertise in their forum signature. The signature is the stuff that shows up below the horizontal line on the post. It will show up on every post I make.

I was a Scratch Team member from May 10th 2019 to October 29th 2021.

That is not what I am suggesting, it's nicknames that replace your username but you can still do @Mr_PenguinAlex and the normal username would still be under it.

Did you see this link? It explains why nicknames are rejected.
