ITopic - What is Necroposting and when should it be reported? [Guide]

But if User A didn't add something to the discussion and User B asks them to not not necropost, is it okay for User B to answer User A's question as well, before reporting the thread to be closed?
That's what I do. In that situation, I tell the user not to necropost (and / or to thread-hijack), but I answer their question anyways and ask them to make a new thread in the case they have a question.

For example, recently, someone necroposted on a thread that already was solved, and their question wasn't relating at all to the original topic's subject. So I told them bla bla bla dOn'T Do tHiS DoN't dO THat, but I still answered their question. Hopefully that helps visualize the situation better.
(I should ask paddle for clarification though)

No. I mean like User B posts as if the topic was still relevant, even if the topic was old, since the date was not realized. Here's a better example:

User A necros something completely useless on a resolved topic.
User B posts on the topic normally, not realizing that the post is quite old. The User A necropost is not noticed by User B,

In other words, I'm referring to accidental necroposting because you didn't check the date and you replied because “it was in the top of the forum”
The most probable thing I can think of would be another user noticing the necropost, who would tell both posters that the thread is already solved. Then they would report the topic to be closed and let the mods close it. We won't devour you if you accidentally reply to a thread that has been necroposted on though :P Just make sure to always check a thread's date before posting on it.

But that's just my point of view, I think a Scratch Team member's point of view and explanation would be better than mine.

Yeah, because the inference is that since it is at the top, it's a new thread, so I don't have to check the date, right?

Thanks for the input, but I'm still looking for more POVs.

It feels weird to see how far we've come. I hope you're well, wherever you are!

One thing to keep in mind is that not every topic that's a top is necessarily a new thread, and we should always check the date before posting ^^

That's exactly what I'm apparently incapable of

I just can't check dates for some reason. Well, I do check dates, but that's only on topics that are like three pages down. If they're on top I don't really bother.

Is https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/139046/?page=3#post-3766615 a valid necropost? (THIS post, the one here, not talking about the one above is a valid necropost because it contributes to the thread and is an ITopic.)

I would think that would be ok, for a few reasons:

Even though the topic you bumped up was old, it's a suggestion topic - and the suggestion itself hasn't been implemented yet. Assuming that the discussion has not been moved to another topic (where users are actively reading and posting on it), it would mean that it still has relevance today.

It seems that you've added some additional value to the topic rather than simply restating what others have said, which is good.

Therefore, I think what you did there should be fine.

Why is it that I keep getting yelled at for telling people not to spam and necropost?

Generally, if people are spamming, you should be reporting those posts rather than responding to them.

When it comes to necroposting, if you want to remind them not to do so, that's fine - but make sure you are being polite and respectful when doing so. With the few exceptions mentioned in the first post, the best course of action on a necropost would again, be using the report button to let the Scratch Team know.

I've never heard of necropost bots before (at least on Scratch). How do you know that they're bots?

That was a really long time ago. I'm pretty sure they're not doing it anymore.

Anyways - yes, this is an iTopic, and the thread is still relevant (and probably will be for a very long time). So, necroposting technically doesn't exist here. The forum guidelines about adding value to the discussion does, though.

Here's an article from the Scratch Wiki on what an ITopic is.

It might be worth saying that it's the last post that adds to the discussion that determines the topic's “age”, because other necroposts don't really make a topic/discussion more “active” or “relevant”.

The message above may contain wrong information, rude remarks, or something embarrassing to my current self. In this case, please ignore it and remember that I likely wrote it back when I didn't know what “respect” truly meant. I really hate thinking about it again.
