Sandy's Co App || July '24
1859 words for answers, 2911 words including storyline & excerpt

Tour Guide: Well, well, hello there, everyone! Thanks for coming to this SWC-sponsored tour of Castle Itter.
Tour Guide: You see, Castle Itter these days is private property, but the owner has kindly agreed to let me show you around for the purposes of this tour!
Tour Guide: (in all seriousness guys don’t come into this castle irl i don’t think they give out tours)
Tour Guide: Anyways, this castle also has a lot of historical significance!! (Which is also why I chose today, May 5th, to give this tour.)
Tour Guide: In the Battle of Castle Itter, defected German troops joined up with American troops to defend some French political prisoners.
Tour Guide: Pretty cool stuff, right?
Tour Guide: Anyways, if you’ll take a look at these cards, you’ll learn more about a few (well, two) of the figures, as well as their participation in the battle.

Major Josef “Sepp” Gangl
1910-1945
As a defected German officer aligned with the Austrian Resistance, Gangl agreed to assist the prisoners of Castle Itter

Capt. John “Jack” Lee
1918-1973
Upon receiving a visit from Gangl asking for aid, Lee led some of the troops under his command to join the defense force of the castle

1. About (120 words)
Hello! I’m Sandy, a 15-year-old girl (she/her) who lives in the western land of PST—west coast best coast ;D I enjoy reading (something I’ve been starting to make into a habit this school year), listening to music (my music taste is mostly composed of two artists—Taylor Swift and Sabaton—and musicals, then Everything Else), card games (especially Speed and Egyptian War), the occasional digital art, and obviously writing! As you can probably see from the theme of this app, history is something that fascinates me as well—especially the two world wars, which are both so multifaceted and different depending on the perspective they’re approached from!! Finally, I can’t mention myself without mentioning my cats, because they’re just so iconic :p

2. Participation (207 words)
Before my first SWC session, which was in March 2021, I did the obligatory stories and such for English classes. But it wasn’t until SWC that I truly started working on writing as a hobby, and since then it’s become such a large part of my life for the past three years, I’ve been working steadily on writing my own personal works—primarily fiction, but also the occasional historical nonfiction, both during sessions and outside of them. Here’s a handy list of my ten sessions:

March 2021, camper in Real-Fi
July 2021, camper in Hi-Fi
November 2021, camper in Thriller
March 2022, camper in Fan-Fi
July 2022, co-leader in Fairy Tales
November 2022, camper in Horror
March 2023, co-leader in Folklore
July 2023, camper in Steampunk
November 2023, camper in Non-Fi
March 2024, camper in Poetry

In my program club, I’m the assistant social chair as well as a yearbook committee member, and I’ve gotten great collaboration experience from these two roles :> I’m also a tutor in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Club at my school. On Scratch, I’ve participated as a camper in multiple sessions of both Scratch Reading Camp and Scratch Writing Camp, and I have been the co-host of Scratch Inspiration Camp since December 2022!

Tour Guide: But more about the castle itself!

???: Who are you all?
Tour Guide: If it isn’t Captain Lee!! How amazing of you to have shown up just for my tour. Almost as if it was meant to happen for the plot…
Lee: …
Tour Guide: Well, I was just about to show this little group of mango arsonists around the castle and check out the decor. Care to join us?
Lee: … alright, then.
Tour Guide: Great! Anyways, here at the front is an excerpt from the Inferno: “Abandon hope, all ye who enter.” Guess the French prisoners must’ve been scared a good bit by that!
Tour Guide: And inside around the castle were where they were kept. Sorta like little cabins, if you ask me.
Lee: If the conditions were better, of course.
Tour Guide: True. But anyways, here’s a map of the castle I lifted!

3. Cabins (61 words)
Since I’m applying for only co, I’d be glad to colead any cabin, including TCTWWNW <3 the only preference I have—which is not an absolute— is cabin bingo (being in a cabin I haven’t been in before, if possible).

4. Excerpt (83 words)
There stood her aunt and uncle’s seaside cottage. She was here, she was safe. She had and would always have unanswerable questions. She would be both haunted and comforted by the shadow of her past life, until she learned to loosen her hold on them—to stop trying to discern whether it was dream or reality.

That’s how things were.

Remnants of the past, vestiges of the present, uncertainties of the future. How long and bitter life could be. How hopeful it could remain.

Tour Guide: Ooh, won’t you look at the time. 10 AM. You know, that’s when the battle really begun.
???: With the attackers using their heavy artillery, yes.
Tour Guide: It’s Gangl!! Would you like to join our tour?
Lee: Good to see you.
Gangl: You too, Captain. I’m not very sure why I’m here, but I’ll come along.
Tour Guide: Perfect! I assure you historical figures randomly time-traveling to join a SWC tour is extremely normal!!!!!!!!!!
Tour Guide: Well, as I was going to say, the battle was really a stall for time while a proper force would come to rescue the 30-something defenders facing 200 troops.
Tour Guide: They had to make every minute last.

5/4 - Gangl and Lee arrive
5/5 (4 AM) - The battle begins
5/5 (10 AM) - The battle intensifies
5/5 (4 PM) - The battle ends

5. Time (80 words)
From mid-June to early August, I’ll be participating in either a research program or a volunteering program, possibly both; I’ll likely be busy with them for eight hours or so every weekday. That’ll leave me with approximately two hours to dedicate to SWC per weekday, and also about three hours per weekend. I don't have any other major activities to take note of, but I'll be prepared for causes of inactivity and let my leading team know if they occur.

6. Time Management (381 words)
One of my strengths in time management is previewing and starting tasks ahead of time. Weeks (or even months, depending on what exactly it is) before a task is due, I'd try to make the slightest progress and plan ahead for how I want to work on it. Although I usually don't get substantial work done on the task in question, it gives a good starting point for me to continue my work in the future.

A weakness of mine, however, is simply getting distracted easily. There are a lot of causes of this, but generally the main one for me is that I can't separate my work time from my break time. Many times, when I try to get work done, I get off-track and work on something I would categorize something as nonimportant rather than work. There is also more of a tendency for me to label whatever this task is as procrastination, even if it’s genuinely useful, if I work on it while there are more important tasks to be done.

Focusing on a task is both a strength and a weakness for me. Once I do end up truly focusing on a task, I can make a tremendous amount of progress on it and am seldom distracted from it. However, I have a subconscious apprehension of working that prevents me from focusing to the best of my ability.

I’ve been able to make progress on both of my weaknesses recently by putting in more effort in formatting my to-do list, thus minimizing any unwillingness I’d have to get started. Another solution would be to go through my work routine more often: getting water/tea when I do work, clearing out my tabs and my workspace, and putting on some music are often the things that encourage me to work. Mindfulness/meditation, which I've practiced a few times but have never made into a particularly permanent habit, also helps a lot with this. In general, my solutions for time management would be to turn into some practices that I've tried before but have either never really made it into my routine or done correctly :0 I can improve on my strengths in a similar way: by practicing them more often and taking note of it when they work.

Tour Guide: And look, here’s Besotten Jenny! Jenny for short. This is the only tank that made it to the battle, and one of the most important assets to the defenders.
Lee: At least until she got knocked out.
Tour Guide: Right. Despite the strengths of a Sherman tank, it was still vulnerable to artillery fire and the likes.
Tour Guide: For a bit more info, check out this neat Sherman operating manual! (It’s actually on Amazon if this is your sort of book) (not sponsored of course)

Sherman M4 (“Easy Eight” variant (M4A3E8))

Strengths:
mass-producible
easy to repair

Weaknesses:
less firepower & armor than German tank

7. Strengths & Weaknesses (522 words)

There are many aspects of teamwork that I've gotten the chance to experience, and I've found that I'm more adept at some of them than others!
One of my strengths is organization. There are a lot of specifics that this term encompasses, but I would say that I'm the most skilled at keeping track of tasks. Dividing up work is something that I have experience with, both on my own and amongst others. There are a lot of considerations that go into when and by whom the tasks in question should be completed, and I have a good understanding of how to sort tasks so that they are all completed timely.

Another one of my strengths is creativity. This is in large part thanks to my experiences—I’m able to draw inspiration from various practices across my different experiences and apply them to each other. Many of my experiences with the memory book, for example, I have applied to my position on the yearbook committee irl. I'm also capable of combining the ideas of others to the best of my ability: often people have different suggestions (especially for things like cabin themes!), and I'm good at combining them so that everyone would see some of their ideas in what is proposed.

Of course, I'm not without my weaknesses! One thing that I could improve at is proactivity - essentially, I'm not as mindful about reaching out when I have uncertainties about what I should do, or if anything needs to be done. This usually happens when I am not knowledgeable about the full scale of any given work. For example, as assistant social chair in my club. I'm responsible for helping out the social chair with events for our club - essentially a co! However, there have been times that I haven't been assigned tasks to do when there were clearly things going on, and I didn't think to ask about them. In retrospect, it is something I should have done :0

My solution to this would be two-fold. For one, to avoid ever being confused about what to do in the first place, I would make sure that I review a to-do list of everything we have to do, and take into account the full scope of our work. Sometimes I don't have enough chances to familiarize myself with issues like this, or I get too caught up in the little details & the specific tasks that neglect the overall picture. If I do happen to ever fall out of the loop, I would be sure to ask as soon as I can.

As for material assets in the context of SWC leading, I can provide a lot of them! I'm reasonably skilled in art, animation, and graphic design (although the former is for you to judge as you go through this app :p). In regards to immaterial assets, I can provide ideas and experience, as well as insights from my past experiences. During my time in SWC, practices have changed a lot, and I've been able to see some nifty tricks and tips from certain cabins, as well as good inspiration for cabin operation.

Tour Guide: While we’re here, we haven’t really seen any of the French prisoners around. How strange.

???: …if you’d stop blaming me for a moment, I’d like to point out that Daladier was the one who…
Gangl: Ah, there they are. Always bickering, the bunch of them.
Tour Guide: That’s Paul Reynaud, guys. Former prime minister of France, if you’d believe it!
Lee: And he survived the battle because Gangl sacrificed himself.
Gangl: It had to be done.
Reynaud: …and Weygand is a traitor.

Tour Guide: Thanks goodness they’re gone. Hrm. Would’ve been an awkward conversation if they saw us.
Tour Guide: As you all probably know, good leadership is important in all contexts, and it’s especially true for a country at war.
Tour Guide: France sure could’ve benefitted from more… coordinated leadership, let’s just say, during those times.
Tour Guide: Instead, everyone was against each other, both in terms of politics and military strategy, and the command staff was incredibly slow to deal with the invasion.
Tour Guide: If you all want to check out a bit more about those French people, I’ve got just the thing for you. Their memoirs!!

Paul Reynaud
Only wrote 4/680 pages of memoirs about his time at Itter
Attacked Daladier in writing
Returned to politics after the war

Édouard Daladier
Former Prime Minister (Reynaud’s predecessor)
Attacked Reynaud in writing
Returned to politics after the war

Quality (328 words)
I believe the most valuable quality of a leader is open communication. I do understand this is something of a broad category, but that is exactly why it's so important - it includes many parts of the leadership process :0 It is key for a leader to be able to communicate well to those they work with, so that everyone can follow along and know what is going on—both in the overall goal of the group’s work, or simply the schedule of everyday tasks. In addition, fostering open communication allows people to be realistic and honest about their expectations and what they are able to accomplish.

While I'm always trying to improve, so far I've developed a few good habits in communication. For starters, I always like to report back with my progress and keep my teammates in the loop on what I'm doing—not only when I would like feedback, but simply to let them know what is going on on my side and to connect my (sometimes isolated/independent) work to the project at large.

I also would like to think that I'm approachable ;D I'm not typically the one to reach out, but I find that people are pretty communicative with me when I speak up; I'm willing to voice any questions and critiques I have. This is especially true in such a friendly and relaxed environment as SWC, where I don't fear anyone would be personally offended if I just point out some potential things to consider for an idea or plan (politely, of course!). This environment of open communication is something that I will continue to foster going forward.

Some further ways I can work on this skill would be to reach out to those I'm working with more often and to ask about how they are doing with their work, instead of focusing purely on my own and waiting for people to come to me - similar to the theme of proactivity I mentioned previously!

Tour Guide: Soooo, I guess that’s about it for the tour! Hopefully you had fun poking around the castle, and learned something about the battle.
Tour Guide: And Gangl and Lee, the plot demands that you now… return to your time? Or wherever you two should be. It was nice having you along.
Gangl: That was a good tour.
Lee: Yes, this battle was just the darnedest thing.* *based on real quote!

You: Thank you for the tour!!
Tour Guide: Of course! Try not to burn down the castle or whatever!!!!
Tour Guide: And hey, make sure you give me a good rating if you can. The name’s Sandy! If you want to go to my profile, here it is.

Sandy Dunes
very experienced tour guide.
gives out very snazzy and QUIRKY history tours!!!!!!!!
book a tour today here: (insert legitimate-looking link)

Sandy: Oh, and happy Cinco de Mayo too!! Now that’s another cool history story behind it, if you want to check that out, but I’m not about to give a double tour… I’m dead tired!!!!!
Sandy: Guess I’ll take a nice nap after this

Atmosphere (22 words)
I hope to colead a cabin that favors skill development and socialization over competition, as well as encourages group work with cabinmates.

Question 10 lol (138 words)
(I am applying only for co-leader, I'm willing to share a promotional project for SWC.)

There are no leadership responsibilities I am unable to complete ^^

If I'd have to go inactive, I would inform my leading team ASAP (along with details regarding the duration of the situation) and share any works-in-progress I have for my current tasks.

If someone else on the team happens to go inactive, I'd check over the inactivity policy given in their app to give an idea as to how our team can proceed. I’d then discuss with the other leading team member how their work can be split. If the inactive (co)leader doesn’t communicate with us, we’d contact them on their profile a few times per week until it's been a couple of days, and then plan to report to the hosts.

1.
Hi! I'm Lily, I like reading, sports and art. I use she/her pronouns and I'm in est/edt. I spend a lot of my time reading and writing summaries on books. I like romance and mystery novels. Sometimes I read sci-fi and non-fi. I like to write poetry and short stories, mostly romance or fantasy.I play softball and soccer and I'm in a robotics club currently. For next school year I got into a magnet highschool for medical so I will be learning to be a doctor I'm also excited because I'm going to be taking chorus and theater for highschool and I love singing whether I'm alone or with my friends. I love musical theater and singing. My favorite musicals are either The Heathers or Hamilton.

2.
I have participated in swc i've been a camper for three sessions i was in, poetry, mystery then sci-fi, i've entered the writing competition all three times and the memory book cover twice while in mystery, then in sci-fi <3
3.
The cabins I would prefer to lead would be poetry, or romance. I would love to co-lead poetry since it was my first cabin and i loved it so much but it's alright if i get placed anywhere else i also why=would really like romance because its been gone for quite a bit and it's my favorite genre <3
And i don't mind co-leading TCTWNW i would love to, it seems like a fun idea doing all your points but there's no real pressure even though i do love the competition. I definitely could co-lead TCTWNW

4.
“Come and join us, delve deeper into the mysteries here, and unravel the secrets that lie hidden within the mansion's icy embrace,” gestured Mabel, offering you a hand.
I took Mabel's hand as we made our way deeper into the mysterious mansion. She seemed eager to unravel its secrets, and I was excited to help her. The ice that covered the mansion had a magical air around it, as if it held powers beyond our understanding. But before we could uncover the mysteries within the ice-covered mansion, we knew that we had to be cautious with every step. As Mabel and I moved through corridor after corridor, we grew more and more fascinated with the secrets within. What discoveries lie beneath the icy surface? Only time and persistence will tell…
Mabel and I made our way deeper into the mysterious mansion, curious to unravel its secrets and discover the mysteries within. As we wandered through the freezing corridors, we noticed how the thick ice that covered the walls seemed to radiate a magical aura. It was as if the mansion held a hidden power, just waiting to be unlocked.

Despite the dangerous atmosphere, Mabel and I pushed forward, eager to discover what was hidden beneath the icy embrace. We passed by dusty old furniture, old paintings hanging on the walls and creaking floorboards, until we finally made our way to a long staircase.

As we ascended the stairs, we began to notice strange symbols carved into the walls and a faint whispering coming from the shadows. Mabel's face lit up with excitement as she noticed the strange markings, and she whispered to me that she believed these symbols held the key to unlocking the mysteries of the mansion. We continued up the staircase, and finally reached the top.

At the top of the staircase was a small attic, filled with cobwebs and old furniture. But it was what lay in the middle of the room that caught our attention - a large, ancient-looking book. Mabel eagerly walked towards it, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.

“This is it, this is what we've been looking for,” she said, as she carefully opened the book. Inside were pages filled with arcane symbols and strange, nonsensical words. Mabel began to recite what she believed to be a spell from the book, her voice growing louder with each word. The attic grew quiet for a moment, and then with a great flash of light, the ice that covered the mansion began to crack and fall away, revealing the mysteries within.

“We did it!” Mabel exclaimed, looking over at me with a smile. “We have uncovered the secrets of the ice-covered mansion. And now, let's explore what's inside.”
Mabel and I were astonished to see the ice crumbling at our feet, the frozen walls melting away to reveal the gorgeous rooms within the mansion. We marveled at the beautiful furniture and the intricate decorations, and we realized that this was a place of magic and wonder.
As we ventured deeper into the mansion, we found that each room held a different surprise - there were rooms filled with ancient tomes, rooms with magical artifacts, rooms with strange plants and animals. Mabel and I were in awe at what we saw and felt like we had stepped into another world entirely.

Our journey through the icy mansion was one full of adventure, mystery, and discovery. We felt like we had uncovered a hidden treasure, one that we would never forget. And as we made our way back outside, we felt a sense of fulfillment, knowing that we had conquered something incredible and grown stronger together.

The experience had been unforgettable, one that Mabel and I would cherish forever. And the lessons we learned along the way - the importance of curiosity, the value of teamwork, and the power of resilience - would stay with us long after the icy mansions' mysteries had been uncovered.

For the most part,
july wont be busy for me at all!
I may have few softball games that month
but softball has never stopped me
from participating in SWC.
That's pretty much it!

6.
I'm very good at organizing and planning ways to divide my time between things. Sometimes I procrastinate a bit and take longer but I usually end up finishing whatever it is I was doing before the deadlines.

7
.i love working with others and i say I'm pretty good at working with others and since its shared it makes it easier not to stress over it and so that i dont rush and mess up but sometime when people explain what there doing i don't understand or i don't know how to explain something to be fixed or re done and sometimes i feel bad if someone messes up and i don't know how to correct them or if i don't like their idea i don't know how to say no to them.

8.
My top value in a leader is passion, because if you don't have a reason or a want to do the job you're doing then why are you really doing it. I also think they should have good listening skills so they can understand what others are asking for or explaining to help more.
I'm really passionate in swc currently cause i love writing and meeting new people which is all swc is about were all friends and we all get along my dream is to do journalism in college and this is helping me get better at writing and journaling

9.
I want to create a warm fun cabin atmosphere where there's friendship and happiness with all the campers, i want everyone to have somewhere they belong and be understood, there's gonna be friendly competition but that's what we need a small push to work harder and get better <3

10.
I'm only applying for co-leader

B. ill be able to complete all my responsibilities and if that changes i will notify a host or co-host

C.if i ever need to go inactive i'll notify a leader or host about how long i'll be off and the reason if i'm able to say, when i get back im complete anything i didn't before and i'll inform them as soon as i get back

swc megathread ➷ march 2024

1. Hello everyone! I’m Em, a person currently conflicted with herself because I have too many things I enjoy, and not enough time. Why can’t a day have 25 hours? It would make life so much easier! Anyway, aside from my bursts of ranting, I swear I’m a good person to be around <3 My pronouns are she/her and I’m currently hiding out in an undisclosed location from Gurtle’s arson. The only hint I can give is that it’s in an Esteemed Super Timeless place. : wink wink: A lot has changed between these four months, so if you already know me, you might still learn something new about me here!
If you were to catch me in the afternoon on a weekend, you might see me listening to Taylor Swift’s new album The Tortured Poets Department. The Black Dog is my favorite song, mostly because it’s underrated, and who doesn’t like underrated things? Following that are So Long London, Fresh Out the Slammer, loml, and How Did It End? My favorite line is probably “My beloved ghost and me / Sitting in a tree / D-Y-I-N-G” I might be trying to write my first novel, posting it on another writing website, hoping for internet stardom (Like it’s going to happen).
Occasionally you may find me trying, “keyword: trying”, to crochet or knit. I blame the thin string by the way. I’ll be playing Honkai Star Rail until I go to bed, simping over Kafka. The reason I like it so much, and why you should play it is because not only does it have beautiful art and music, which are both big points, but because its story writing is beautiful and so in-depth. For an aspiring writer like me, it’s an awesome place to find inspiration for my writing, I’ve always wanted to feel as if I was in an adventure story, making friends, fighting enemies, and just enjoying how vast the world is. It gives some perspective into my own life. In some ways, it has opened my eyes.
Enough unpaid advertising, lately I’ve been into reading webcomics. Although they are vastly different compared to my usual books, there’s something magical about being able to see them, instead of just reading them. It also is a great refreshing taste, something new, something different. If anyone is interested in starting to read them, I encourage you to, especially if you want to read romance, there’s a lot of good ones out there, along with adventure, historical, and funny ones.
There have been many things that have helped me grow as a person. Music has been one of them. I recall that in my last app, I talked about having a solo improvisation, and I’m pleased to say that it went very well! As someone who isn’t great in social situations, it gave me a boost of confidence. Out of the blue, I also sang “Heather” by Conan Gray in an open mic event at my school, so wow lots of character development.
I’m looking forward to our next school concert, where I will hopefully solo again! Music is such a big part of my life, with me enjoying it, my friends also participating in band and orchestra, and me listening to it nonstop every day, it wouldn’t be the same without it.
Along with me growing as a person, I’ve also improved a lot in my writing, in my music, and also in my art. As you can see from my profile picture, I’ve been starting to use references and drawing online more. I’m currently not making any art, as I’ve been focusing on my “novel”, but I’ll continue to do it when I have time.
There’s one more thing that’s helped me grow and is always there. Regardless of whether it’s technically running(let’s not worry about the specifics). Can you guess what it is?
Drumroll…
I’m pretty sure you got it, it’s you guys! The SWC community. Even though the session ended a month ago, the main cabin has always been active. Whenever I’ve had trouble, I go to the comments and smile. It’s such a positive and loving community! I hope that you feel the same way <3 It’s my home online, and I know it is for many others, so hosties, I know you’ve probably been told this before, but you have such an impact on our lives, and our community, so don’t ever leave >:0 /j
Sentiments aside, there’s so much that makes me up, I wouldn’t be able to say it all in under three thousand words, but I hope I’ve said enough, enough for you to know what I cherish and hold close to my heart.

2. I have previously participated in SWC, and here is an overview of my previous sessions, and what role I played in them:

July 2022 - Fairytales Trails - Camper
November 2022 - Dystopian Realm - Camper
March 2023 - Mystery the Secret Organization - Co-leader
November 2023 - Myth Cove - Co-leader
March 2024 - Tragedy: The Taking - Leader

Some notable events in these months include my first time camping in July 2022, where I was very active and learned a lot about SWC. I remember getting fifth place, which was very exciting.
In November, I had a lot of friends with me in Dystopian, so that was fun, I won a Juniors, and I’m very proud of it.
Mystery was my first time taking a leadership role and it got me used to taking more jobs in SWC. Myth was similar, but I was a lot more active, and finally, Tragedy was my first time being a leader, and I enjoyed it a lot. Although I had to do more work, my awesome co-leaders, River and Willow helped a lot, and it felt nice to be in charge of a cabin after about two years <3

My other camp experiences include:
June 2022 - SAC - Camper
June 2022 - SDC - Camper
July 2022 - SSC - Camper
August 2022 - SRC - Camper
September 2022 - SFC - Camper
September 2022 - TC - Camper
October 2022 -SHC - Co-leader
October 2022 - SAC - Co-leader
December 2022 - SRC - Leader
December 2022 - SMC - Camper
January 2023 - SPEC - Co-leader
January 2023 - JWC - Leader
February 2023 - SAC - Leader
April 2023 - SRC - Host
May 2023 - CT - Leader
December 2023 - SRC - Co-leader
January 2024 - JWC - Host

For writing experiences, I’ve won two junior awards in SWC and have entered writing contests before. I have also been in many leadership positions, as I naturally gravitate to them, whether it’s from an extracurricular, in school, or even in Girl Scouts, guiding younger scouts in events.

3. First, my least preferred would be any cabins I’ve been in: Fairytales, Dystopian, Mystery, Myth, and Tragedy. There are also some genres I don’t have any ideas for or aren’t very excited to (co) lead-in: Contemporary, Fan-fi, Illu-fi, and Lyric.
My favorite cabins are listed below, along with some ideas that I have for each one of them. (In order of preference)

Horror: Everything is fine. Everything is fine. Everythin- i ine. Everything is no- fine.
Thriller: In an underground lab, the campers awake, with no recollection of memories before. A deadly gas has been released by the leaders to destroy the lab, but security has trapped them. This would be like an escape room, they have to get to the surface and prevent the gas from coming out, to save the world.
Folklore: A lost cardigan… has sent you on a strange journey, through stories passed down generations, trying to reach your destination. Can you finally be at peace with your ghosts, or will you also be dissolved in the magic of storytelling? (This cabin would be a bit different, although you are still working with your fellow campers, you will be combined into one entity, as the person you will be playing has a strange past, and the campers have to uncover to to know why they’re here, and why they’re trying to find the cardigan. So, basically a first-person narrative)
Short Story Summit: You were only supposed to be tourists, viewing the beautiful yet dangerous Mountain of Short Stories, but you end up stranded at the top after a terrible storm starts. There have been strange disappearances, and the campers realize that the mountain is more mysterious than they thought. Something is lurking in the shadows.
Poetry: The campers are stuck in a labyrinth of rooms, and forced by the leaders are supposed to find a way out. The only way to travel between the rooms is through poetry on the wall (There are different rooms, and each poem is like a teleportation device). Along the way, they realize that they’re not the only ones who have been here and find diary pages here and there. Will they trace the steps of previous adventurers, or will they find a way out by themselves? Or will the leaders destroy them first?
Fantasy: Harry Potter-themed, I can’t believe there hasn’t been one yet! You’ve been at Hogwarts for a while now, so when the Triwizard tournament comes up, you’re surprised to find some of your campers on the other side of the playing field. You will be sorted into Durmstrang, Beauxbatons, or Harry Potter, and will work with each other in your schools to try and beat everyone else. Who will win the cup?
Adventure: As explorers, you have been sent to find the famed ruins of a mysterious god, from a group of natives that had long perished, but worshipped a strange god called “Skog”. Will they get there in time, or will Gurtle (fill-in for their competitor) find it first?

As I’m a sucker for a good competition, I don’t believe that TCTWNW is the best choice for me, given what I have in store for the session.

4. Linked in desc!

5. Since this session is in July, I will have more free time than in March or November because school’s out for me. I was still able to balance the responsibilities as a (co)leader during those months, and my life outside of Scratch, so I’m sure there will be nothing to worry about. Throughout the planning process from late May to the end of June, I’ll be able to dedicate about an hour on weekdays, and two hours on weekends, depending on how much work will need to be done collaborating with my (co)leader(s). During the real session, less work should be needed, but I will still try my best to do all of the dailies, weeklies, etc. I should be able to dedicate two hours each day in July, unless a day trip comes up, in which case I will plan and make sure that if any conflicts arise because of my inactivity, I will be able to solve them.

That being said, from July 20th to 31st, I will be on vacation. Although this will impact my time on Scratch, I will still be able to check in every day, I will still be able to write and communicate. Since it’s also at the end of camp, it won’t be as much of an issue as if I was away at the start of camp. I am confident that I can work my way around it, and that there will be no issues. My (co)leaders will also be informed ahead of time to prevent any confusion. Though there are activities that I will be doing in the Summer, I believe they will not impede my ability to lead.

6. Time management is something that everyone needs to improve on, and I’m no exception. Although I have improved a lot from the last session–I procrastinate a lot less and aren’t as lazy anymore–I still struggle with staying on task occasionally.

I still find myself distracted at times, and that’s an issue. Usually, it’s fun to be in SWC, but there’s always work to be done, and not all that work is fun and games. When I’m stuck with a task I don’t want to do, I often gravitate towards something else, say, YouTube. I spend a few minutes there and then go back to work, but after a short time, I get distracted again. Even while saying this, I’ve been just switching between writing my answers and watching YouTube. This is a problem, because the more time I’m immersed in other things, the more time I’m wasting, and the more time I’m not productive. I’ve found that although I need to fix this, listening to music helps me concentrate on what I’m doing, and it’s harder for me to get distracted. Even though it isn’t a complete fix, taking one step at a time is enough for me.

As a natural-born multitasker, I’ve always prided myself on being able to do two or more things at once, for example, walking and reading, drawing and reading, listening to music and learning, etc. This is also the same when it comes to working in SWC. I tend to do my needed work for SWC at the same time as, for example, doing schoolwork. Though there are benefits to multitasking, the main problem is that to multitask, the quality is compromised. In simpler words, if I do two things at once, both won’t turn out as great as if I did them one at a time. My solution to this is to try and do things separately, and slowly convert.

Though I do have my issues, I also have my strengths. I love to organize, I make plans of exactly what I should do every day and in what order to efficiently complete all my tasks. This applies to SWC too, and when you organize your time, it’s obvious that it saves a lot of it, making life easier for everyone when I know exactly what to do and when.

I have high productivity when I work compared to an average person, I’ve always found myself finishing classwork before others. I feel a sense of accomplishment in completing something quickly but with great quality. That satisfaction pushes me to work hard and fast every time I do, allowing me to have less to worry about in the same amount of time others have.

7. As someone who prefers to work alone rather than others, it’s sure to say that I have some problems in that field. I find it difficult to trust people, especially ones met online. It’s not to say that you guys are dangerous, but it’s hard to trust people with doing work. I find myself often being stressed, thinking what if “They don’t finish on time?” or if “They don’t do it as well as I could’ve?” This has also happened to me in real life, and a few experiences that proved those questions right don't help me. So when it comes to delegating work to my (co)leaders, as a leader, such as in the previous session, I often just say “What do you want to do?”, because I find that when people get to choose, they do the work they wanted to do better than if you forced it upon them. But I might pull something like taking most of the work for myself, because I believe I can do it better, or they might not have enough time to finish it. It’s a double-edged sword, and I have to tell myself that if these people applied for SWC as a (co)leader, they know their responsibilities, and should be able to fulfill them, after all, if they couldn’t, then why are they on the leadership team?

Though preferring to be independent while working with a team has its downsides, it also has its advantages, especially if I’m a leader. It allows me to more naturally take the lead and the responsibilities that come with being a leader. I can easily delegate tasks, offer positive and constructive feedback to my co-leaders, encourage everyone to work together, and make sure that everyone agrees on most of our team’s actions. I listen to everyone’s suggestions and try my best to have everyone pleased about what we’re doing and motivated to do work. Open-mindness is crucial in collaboration, I always make sure I am doing my best to listen to other’s opinions. I find myself often being very flexible in many ways, for example, when changing time restraints, an internal problem between my (co)leaders and me, or a shift of workload, I can adapt to different situations quickly, making our workspace less stressful and encouraging others to do the same.

I promise that I will have a lot to bring to the table, if it’s not my experience, dedication, critical thinking, creativity, or technical skills such as writing, or graphic design, my assets will not fail the leading team in any way.

8. If I had to choose one quality that I want the most in my leader, I’d choose responsibility. Just like last session, I believe that without any accountability, a leader would not be able to do anything.

A leader has to know what they’re in for if they’re applying for any Scratch camp. They need to acknowledge that there will be a lot of work for them to do and that if they’re not ready to take on this responsibility, or if they might not have enough time, they mustn’t apply. Of course, sometimes things pop out of nowhere, and it’s no one’s fault if a leader can’t be one anymore. However, it is their responsibility to inform their co-leaders and the host team and take full accountability for their leaving. They have to make sure that their cabin will be able to survive without them. There are many other situations in which leaders have to take responsibility, but this is only one example, and there is so much more to being responsible.

As for how I’ll embody this trait myself, whether I get into SWC as a (co)leader or even a camper, depending on what responsibilities I’ll need to take, rest assured that I will try everything in my power to fulfill them. If conflict arises whether it’s because of me or someone else, I will take charge and try and figure out a solution. I will never back away from my work, even if it’s hard, because I know all I do is what needs to be done.

9. This is a tentative cabin atmosphere, as depending on what cabin I get, if I get in that is, and what the storyline is, it will change, but for now:

A place where campers work together to solve problems, bond, and have fun. It will be exciting, and competitiveness is taken seriously here, along with making the most of the session.
(183 words)

10. A.
I am applying for both co-leader and leader (check)
I am applying for only co-leader
I am willing to share a promotional project for SWC (check)

B. I can confidently complete all leadership responsibilities with no issues.

C. In case of inactive leadership from anyone in the SWC leadership team, including me, I will try my best to ensure everything runs smoothly. There are many possibilities for this, if the inactive person is a leader from another cabin, if I have time, I will offer help, but if I don’t, I won’t, and I’ll trust the hosts will handle it. If it’s a member of my cabin’s leadership team, I will inform the hosts of this and evaluate the situation to see if another co is needed, or if the team can survive without them and all the other logistics. If I am the one leaving, if I’m leaving I will tell my fellow (co)leaders and hosts. I will ask them if they need me to do anything before I go, or if there’s anything I can do before I go.

maia's july '24 co-leader app (text version)
finally finished! 1193 words w/o excerpt, 1625 w/ excerpt

about me - 166 words
hi whoever is reading this! i hope you have a lovely day <3 i’m maia, and you may have seen me around in sac, swc, and src because i spend more time on scratch than schoolwork ;] /hj anyway, i use she/they pronouns and live in the (b)est timezone. i have unhealthy obsessions with reading (ahhh fourth wing killed me), art, writing (some of the time, the other part of the time i regret all my life choices /j), and parentheses apparently. i also love coding, math, especially algebra, and music! i’ve played an instrument since 2nd grade but switched around a bit until settling on the bassoon which i’ve been playing for almost 5 years! i also love listening to music, with some of my favorites being taylor swift, christina perri, and mitski though i’ve been recently enjoying laufey’s music as well (also does anyone else singularly listen to spotify generated playlists? i do not have the time to carefully make my own haha)

previous participation + experience - 146 words
i’ve participated in swc three times: july ‘22, nov ‘23, and march ‘24 and only as a camper, so this would be my first time leading! i camped in jwc 2024, and i also am (sort of) in a writing club at my school where i’ve learned a lot. as for leading experience i’ve led twice in sac and once in src, as well as co hosting and leading sac for june 2024! aside from scratch, i have worked on a mentorship with my school where we help mentor elementary schoolers. that taught me a lotttt of patience and other important skills since i actually do not like small children very much… (gotta do it for the transcript tho amirite) also, i did girl scouts up until this year where i did lots of projects with younger girls as well as projects with my own troop.

cabins - 88 words
my top choices for cabins would be lyrics, script, or classics but i would also love fantasy, poetry or fairy tales. i would prefer not to lead something like mystery, tragedy, or thriller because i’m too upbeat for that haha. some ideas i have are an escape-from-reality, haven type thing for lyrics, a light academia school vibe for script and an escape room with clues having to do with classic books for classics. i would rather not lead tctwnw but if needed i would be happy to <3

excerpt - 432 words

once upon a time there was light in my life

There were leaves drifting in the air, adding flecks of color to the already vibrant autumn forest. It was windy, a cool wind that rustled through the trees and caressed the two people walking lazily. They were dressed in the colors of fall, oranges and reds and browns and blended in with the landscape.

They danced under the trees, slowly, quicker. The breeze seemed to follow them as they wandered, soaking in the beauty.

The sun was setting, sending ruddy blossoms of light through the tree trunks, illuminating the couple. One was on the other’s shoulders, reaching up to brush the low-hanging branches and plucking off a few brittle leaves. They fell, toppling into the crushed leaves on the ground. The laughter drifted up, seemingly infecting the whole forest with light.

now there's only love in the dark

It was a bitter cold day. The sky was dark, even though it was only early afternoon. Clouds sped through the sky as if eager to get away from the person covered in sorrow. The sidewalk was icy slick underneath her, but there was no hesitation. She was running away, away from the darkness where there used to be joy. They had parted the night before and she had been running ever since. Her heart was cold and the world was dark and she didn’t think she’d ever love again.

Tears streaked her face from the night before, but she couldn’t cry anymore. It was partly the chill that seemed to be in her bones, but mostly the hollowness. Her heart was empty, there was a human-shaped hole. Maybe it was the shape of a hand, a punch straight through her. Maybe it was just broken in half. She didn’t know.

It had come out of nowhere. Two days ago she was filled with light and cheer and hope for a future with the two of them. Now it was only her.

nothing i can say

She wanted it back, all of it. The love, the delight, the blaze that had swept her off her feet. She was floating away and she didn’t want to come back down. Then she fell. She wanted it but she would never ask. She would never come back. She would break before she even said the name.

It was light then it was dark. It was exciting then it was loneliness. It was everything. Then it was nothing. It was a void in the sky. It was a void in her heart.

a total eclipse of the heart

time dedication + conflicts - 122 words
i should be able to dedicate a lot of time to swc since i’m pretty scratch addicted haha, but there’s a few conflicts to make note of! i get out of school half way through june which will significantly increase my available time, but even before that i should be able to spend at least an hour per day working on swc-related things. i have finals june 12th-13th which probably won’t change too much since i don’t have many classes, but i will be studying like the good child i am. at the end of july (from the 22nd to the 26th) i’ll be on a trip, but it’s very lowkey so i should still have plenty of time to help out.

strengths + weaknesses in time management - 241 words
i think i’m pretty good at managing my time overall, but i definitely fall victim to the evil beast called procrastination fairly often as well as not having the smartest priorities haha.
i tend to procrastinate more on things i don’t want to do (coughapushcough) than things i enjoy, like swc. then again,if i procrastinate on something important it could lead to me having less time for swc (though i usually use swc to procrastinate so maybe it evens out)
also having to do with that, i sometimes prioritize things that aren’t as important (like swc unfortunately) this makes me spend time on that when i should really be doing something else, which makes me stressed which no one wants. i might have to take time off of swc to make sure i’m keeping up with actual work.
fortunately i do have some tricks up my sleeve! i’m a very organized person so i make lots of to-do lists to keep myself on track and make sure i’m doing everything i need to do. i’m also very dedicated to what i do so that helps me do things in a timely manner.
lastly, if i miss a deadline or am behind on something i always make time to finish it as soon as possible, even if it’s inconvenient. this means if i procrastinate something it will end up being done, just at the last minute (adrenaline rush for the win)

strengths + weaknesses in working with others - 186 words
i used to hate working with others, but in the last few years i have learned and accepted that that’s a part of life, and it is actually really beneficial! some of my strengths in a team are my flexibility and reliability. i’m very flexible and am able to change what i’m doing at a moment’s notice and also take care of anything that needs to be done, even if i wasn’t necessarily going to do it before. i’m reliable and will try my best to do anything that i say i will (though it might take a reminder) and make sure it’s done well. my weaknesses are very different online from in real life, but online i tend to be a follower and won’t disagree with someone, even if i think they’re wrong (usually out of respect) also, i sometimes worry that other people won’t do something as well as i could (control freak i know) so i will volunteer to do more than i maybe should, but i’ve been working on accepting that even if others would do something differently it’s not usually worse.

important quality in leader - 103 words
i think the most important quality in a leader is being able to delegate tasks. the whole point of working with others is to bring more ideas and abilities to the table, so a good leader would be able to assess who would do what best and assign them that, and then make sure to trust them and not micromanage. i would show this by making sure to stay in my lane and trust that my leader gave me a task because they thought i could do it best, and they gave someone else something because they’re the right person for the job.

cabin atmosphere - 31 words (189 chars)
i would try to have a friendly yet competitive atmosphere where everyone helps each other and works together to do well and crush the other cabins, but understand winning isn’t everything

boxes + last questions - 110 words
a. _ i’m applying for both leader + co-leader
X i’m only applying for co-leader
X i’m willing to share a promotional project for swc

b. nope, i can do them all!

c. if i knew i would be inactive i would make sure to inform my leader and do anything i can before i leave, but if i was inactive and i didn’t know i would be i would try to find a little bit of time to do something or at least inform my leader. if another leader in my cabin was inactive i would make sure someone was taking care of their tasks but not doing too much.

Kiara’s Co-Leader Application Text Answers
1217 without excerpt, 1641 with excerpt

01- About me

Hi! I’m Kiara (she/her), and EST gal who’s favorite things are writing, show choir, and musical theater. I’m an extrovert who loves performing and am obsessed with musicals such as 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Mean Girls, Newsies, and Wicked. I have also been in six productions with my local theater group and school, my favorites being Matilda and Mean Girls!

I currently have two pets: a bernadoodle dog named Kona who is a bundle of energy and loves playing fetch (though she will never actually return the ball once she’s fetched it) and a foster rabbit named Brendan who loves getting himself into trouble (the more off-limits something is, the more out of his way he goes to get it).

My favorite genres to write include fantasy and fairy tale retellings, though I will sometimes dabble in science fiction and realistic fiction (especially if it involves show choir). Some of my favorite books include Six of Crows, Illuminae, The Cruel Prince, Warcross, and Hunger Games.

02- Experience

I have previously participated in three sessions of SWC, all three as a session. I joined SWC in March of 2023 in Adventure. Since then, I have been in Fantasy in November 2023 and most recently Fairy Tales in March 2024.

As for other leadership roles, I am currently leading and hosting Scratch Singing Camp as well as leading Songwriting cabin in Evergreen Arts Camp (on scratch). In real life I am a member of student government this year, as well as previously participating in the leadership team at my local theater group. I have also applied and am looking to be accepted into NJHS (National Junior Honors Society) for the next school year.

03- Cabins I would be interested in co-leading
I would be truly honored to be offered any co-leader opportunity, but I feel like there would be some genres that would fit me better than others. I would love to lead TCTWNW, because I think the laid-back vibe would be a fun break from the friendly competitiveness of SWC, especially over the summer. Other than that, my really only preference would be a lighter, more laid-back atmosphere, but like I said before it would be amazing to be offered any co-leader positions!

04- Writing Excerpt
“The garden was full and alive. The caterpillars climbed across leaves, lazy and happy.
The children who played with the caterpillars were happy as well, their faces still young and unburdened by troubles: a young boy with honey-blonde hair, a young girl with hair the color of raven’s feathers. His face was full of childlike joy; her eyes were sparkling with wonder.”

“Time passed, they grew older. Slowly, the caterpillars climbed into their cocoons. The two discovered music. Soon, the garden was filled with sounds of songs being sung and dances being made.”

“The butterflies emerged, colorful wings fluttering as they rested against brightly colored flowers.
The two started spending less time in the garden. His hair turned from a light honey-brown to a darker tan. Her hair brightened with sun- turning lighter brown. He got glasses, lost them within a day. She got braces, her teeth are perfect now.”

“Time passed, the butterflies started to leave the garden for brighter horizons. The two were together in the garden. They took a moment of peace in their busy lives. Contacts in his eyes, retainers in her mouth.”

“The flowers began to wilt and die, tired from a life of trying too hard. He was jealous she was already further along in this path called life, even though she was a year younger. She tried not to flaunt her talents, but she desperately wanted him to recognize her. They tried to hang out more, the plans always fell through.”

“The garden was dead. The two came into it one last time, trampling dry flowers. Words were yelled, insults thrown. She left, tears in her eyes. He stayed, looking at the beautiful thing that had fallen into ruin.”

“Years later, she returned to the garden alone. She was startled to see it was flourishing again, watered by the young children who had found a home in this garden that was once hers. Maybe all good things were in a constant cycle. The butterflies were back, glowing in purples and blues.”

“Years later, he found a butterfly resting on his front porch. He leaned down, looking at the creature. He remembered her, and tears came to his eyes. He was happy now, but he missed her, through it all.”

“The butterflies left to find their own homes, live their own lives. But they never, ever forgot each other.
And maybe, one day, a boy with glasses and honey-brown hair and a girl with hair the color of raven feathers will find each other again, in the garden.”

05- Time

I usually spend quite a bit of dedicated time on Scratch, and plan to devote at least 1-2 hours a day (not consecutively, however) dedicated to SWC. Since it will be summer, I will certainly be free for large periods of time. However, I will be gone on a family trip from July 5th to 13th, though I believe I will still be able to be active for about 30-45 minutes on non-travel days, enough time to update the word counts and check in with the cabin!

06- Time Management

When it comes to time management, I am good at setting my mind to a project and being able to spend long periods of time on it to get it done the best it can possibly be. However, I can stress too much on the little details or take a long time to get energy to work on a project.

07- Collaboration

When it comes to collaboration, I am always good at contributing my own ideas and working as hard as possible to get my part done. I am also a highly social person, which comes with both a strength and a weakness as well. On one hand, I am able to keep talking and bouncing ideas off of others for long periods of time. However, I can occasionally get off topic. Another strength of mine is being able to help others come to a compromise and being flexible with other’s thoughts and ideas. A weakness is that I can sometimes take criticism (even constructive) personally, which is a weakness I am working to overcome with continual time and putting myself out there.

08- Leadership

Something I really value in a leader is the ability to connect with others. Especially in the online world where people cannot always be in the same space or talking face-to-face, I find that when leaders really take the effort to reach out and connect with their campers and fellow leaders that a person really stands out in my mind. The way I try to embody this trait in myself is always being around to give an uplifting word or to talk to others, especially in a setting where I am a leader or someone that others can look up to for a friendly chat, help, or guidance in wherever they are going next.

09- Atmosphere

“An environment centered around helping others build skills as a writer and a person, while still encouraging a bit of friendly competition.” —139 characters

Life is always more fun with a little bit of competition— or at least that's what I believe. But I feel like things such as building a strong community or laughing about inside jokes should never be pushed aside for competition. I feel like in an overly competitive atmosphere, there are certain types of people who cannot flourish to be the best they possibly can be. I feel like building friendships, skills and memories should always be on the top of the priority list, competition only if the atmosphere is strong and allows it.

10- Checkboxes

I am applying for only co-leader
I am willing to share a promotional project for SWC

Are there any responsibilities in the FAQ you cannot complete?

Nope! I am ready and willing to complete all of them.

In case of inactive leadership (either in case of yourself or a fellow leader) what steps will you take to ensure that the cabin keeps running smoothly?

In case of inactivity by me, I will notify my fellow (co)leaders as well as one of the hosts if necessary. I will make sure that I can help in any way possible until a new, more active co-leader is chosen in my place or another method arises.

In case of inactivity by another member of my leadership team, I will first notify the other members of my leadership team and then again the hosts, if necessary. I will undertake all responsibilities needed of me to make sure that another member of the team doesn’t come back to a large workload.

dec. ♜ luka's swc july '24 leader app

1. About me

Hello everyone! For those of you who don't know me, my name is Luka! <3 I use she/her pronouns and reside in the heavily underrated MST timezone. I always lose count(or forget), but this is probably my 9th session in SWC!

My hobbies include art, graphic design, writing and basketball. I haven't been drawing or making any designs as of late due to my often packed schedule, but it's still something I enjoy very much. When I'm not designing things, at home I'm watching the NBA playoffs and hoping my least favorite team does NOT win even though they're really good. After that, I'm doing schoolwork, or being lazy and scrolling through a certain pin site.

Recently, I've been writing a lot more than usual, and I love writing fanfiction most of all, especially the gut-wrenching ones that make you want to cry. I don't actually plan on sharing most of them anytime soon, I just write them as a way to make the stories in my head come to life. Right now, I just hit 100k words on one fic and I never thought I'd even get that far.

If you've ever seen my scratch pfp and banners, or seen me rant, you'll know that I like anime, J-Pop, K-pop, the usual. I've always appreciated East Asian culture, especially Japanese, though I wouldn't call myself a fangirl of it. My favorite anime is Bungou Stray Dogs, which is literally about characters who are based off/named after authors who have abilities based on their famous works (fun fact: there's a U.S.A arc as well so you hear a lot of familiar names.) Obviously, the show basically ties my two favorite things together, and the plot is very interesting as well. Aside from that, I enjoy watching Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man, Demon Slayer, Toilet Bound Hanako Kun and more. I also like listening to J-POP and K-POP, and I'm a big vocaloid fan.

My music taste is varied though, and I love Rap, Hip-Hop, R&B and most of all, Afrobeats. I don't really like pop and most mainstream music because to me, it feels boring and repetitive, but I still listen to some songs. My favorite artists are SZA, Ayra Starr, Kendrick Lamar, Future, Coco Jones, Azealia Banks, Pink Pantheress and more.

In the future, I'd like to do something that pertains to psychology. The study of the mind and how people perceive things has always been so interesting to me. Another option would be criminology. I love listening to true crime documentaries (big Rotten Mango and Coffeehouse Crime fan) and I've always dreamed of starting my own podcast one day. I think that psychology and criminology also tie together in a lot of ways as well.

Anyway, this is getting long, so let's move on to the next question

——————

2. Experience

I have been in SWC for 3 years now! Time flies by so fast, doesn't it? My very first session was in July ‘21, and ever since then I've sincerely enjoyed being here.

I managed to find the list of all the sessions I've done:

July 2021 - Fanfiction (camper)

November 2021 - Mystery (camper)

March 2022 - Mystery Monastery (co-leader)

July 2022 - Dystopian: Castle in the Sky (leader)

November 2022 - N/A

March 2023 - Bi-Fi Wonderland (camper)

July 2023 - Illu-fi Anarchist Library (camper)

November 2023: Steampunk : Clockwork Abbey (leader)

March 2024: Utopian Starlands (first Utopian leader!!)

I've also helped with the memory book, volunteered for the daily team, been a mercenary for cabin wars, was a writing competition panelist last session, and have placed three times in the writing comp (judge's cut, 4th place fanfiction and honorable mention), so I have a fair amount of experience in SWC overall

Writing is one of my favorite hobbies. I was never serious about it when I was younger, but as I get older it’s something I’ve become very fond of and passionate about. At school, I’m a graphic designer and article writer for Newspaper Club, and I also write posts as well. Even so, English isn’t my best subject (especially English AP), but I try to improve my skills as much as I can.

In terms of leadership, I’ve been a leader three times and a co-leader once in SWC. Outside of Scratch, I don’t really like taking leadership roles because of my nature but if necessary I do try to be a leader. In the past however I definitely have taken up leadership roles in a variety of different areas. Being the oldest sibling in my family and the oldest out of all my cousins, that does come with down pressure and is a huge leadership role.

3. Cabins

I truly don’t mind what cabin I’m in if I end up being chosen. For the sake of the question though, I wouldn't really like to be in any cabins I’ve been in before(listed in Experience), and I don’t want to be in a cabin a third time (Mystery). I’d prefer to (co)lead in another cabin genre I’ve never been in before, and I am definitely open to joining any new cabin genres if they’re added this session! Once again though, I really don’t mind any cabin. I’m also open to any ideas for cabin themes that the other cabin leaders have!

As for cabin ideas, I think Paranormal is a really cool genre for a cabin. I had an idea where the storyline is taking place in an actual book. As in, the entire cabin gets trapped in a book, and has to write their own story and finish it in order to get out, while learning plot devices and literary devices. I think this idea could work for almost every genre, which is why I said I'm okay with anything, but I'd love to see it explored in a Paranormal cabin. I'm also open to Fantasy, Thriller or Script.

(The Cabin That Will Not Win isn’t my biggest preference, because I was in it last session and I think it just doesn’t work for me. I also miss the competition aspect of SWC.)

4. Writing Excerpt

She was a girl, with thick red hair as vibrant as a raging fire, yet as cool as the red fall leaves laying to rest. Her blue dress commanded the very oceans themselves. Her very presence spread waves of elegance and dignity. Nevertheless, her kindness never hid itself, radiating like the sun. In him, she was intrigued and challenged.

He was a boy, his glare enough to cut through layers of metal. His pale white skin contrasted with the ebony darkness of his intriguing way of dress. His curls rolled up against his ears and down his cheeks, covering the harshness of his despair. In her, he was awoken and helpless.

A measly cobblestone street decorated with shop booths was to be graced with the first encounter of two souls. The boy sold art, canvas of colorful strokes forming faces, shapes and scenery one could only dream of in the Kingdom.

Her heterochromatic eyes landed upon the splashes of color creating a diverse flower garden. She diverted her attention from her advisors and minister serving as reminders of her endless duties, to a soldier who loved to paint. She was entranced by his mysterious eyes and shy movements.

When he heard her laugh, his world broke out into vibrancy. He bowed out of embarrassment and humility, and she giggled and told him to leave it be. She bought the flower garden painting, then waved him goodbye, going back to her endless duties as the people's princess.

They met again the next day. She invited him for a walk against the cool spring breeze. Their laughter caused lilies to bloom and the sun’s rays to shine brighter, though shadows of darkness conspired against their joy.

Their lips came together on the eve of her twentieth birthday, two short years after their first meeting The forbidden came to pass. A beautiful princess and a filthy soldier together in everlasting love.

Everlasting. He swore that night he would always protect her, with everything he had. Even when those who were once for her turned against her. Even when the once ephemeral beauty of the Kingdom was laid to waste by civil wars and unrest. Even when the King and Queen fell, and she took the throne she so despised.

“Don't miss me when I'm gone. For your sake my love.”

She didn't have to do it. She didn't have to. Everything got to her. All the pain and sorrow overshadowed the love she once felt.

“Let me fight for you, my love. Don't let go.”

He had to do it. He had to. Everything got to him. All the love and hope overshadowed the despair he once fell.

He would fight for her. She would give it all up for him.

The Kingdom fell many years ago. Two souls fell many years ago, one to despair, and one to everlasting death. On December 24th, her twenty-fourth birthday.

5. Dedication

This July I’m doing summer school, and I would like to focus on it so that I can do well and pass, since doing class online isn’t that easy. In fact, I weighed the option of not participating in this session at all, but I think that I’ll be able to balance my time well. So I decided that I’ll apply for (co)leader and if I’m not selected, then I’ll be a camper. I can say almost for sure that I plan to be active and helpful, but I want to prioritize school because I’m at a time in my life where I need to take my education much more seriously.

If I get chosen as (co)leader, I will be very active. Last day of classes is June 7th for me, and after that I only have two exams later in the month. My schedule is pretty light this semester and during summer break aside from summer school.

My goal for this upcoming session is to be more active in the community mainly because of the last session (more on that later!), and I really want to stick to it.

Other than everything I’ve said above, I have no other plans/events that would drastically affect my participation.

6. Time Management

I've never been a fan of this question since I feel like I have more shortcomings than actual skills, and I don't like admitting my shortcomings that much. But it's not like I can completely exclude this question anyway.

I have to be honest, it's easy to think that I don't have any skills when it comes to time management, but I do have one that could be considered a skill. I'm the type of person that really really likes it when I have my time planned out. As in, I have an idea of when things are going to happen, and when they're going to end, especially daily occurrences. I always make my decisions and plan myself based on what will most likely happen and try to plan accordingly based on that. In fact, I do this so often that sometimes I don't even know that I'm doing it. I take transit a lot, and I think I have a lot of bus/train times memorized that I don't even use the transit app. It's crazy to me.

So, when things don't actually work out the way they're supposed to, it really frustrates me, and throws off my time management. I can't control the future or time, and I know that very well. I'm also, you guessed it, a procrastinator, and I always think I can get stuff done in a shorter amount of time when I actually need more time. This question I'm answering right now? I was supposed to write this three days ago, so there's a great example right there.

I want to keep working on my shortcomings and I'll keep doing so while also strengthening and learning new skills as well. I can say that in a way, getting older helps me realize how valuable time is, and that it's important to know how to manage it.

(PS: This isn't a skill BUT I think I have a super precise imaginary clock in my head?? Okay it sounds weird but I've guessed the exact time so many times without looking at a clock beforehand. Once I left my phone and watch at home on a school day, and that's terrible when you have to take transit, but I made it to school on time and caught all three of my buses and guessed when they were coming, like exact time and everything. I'm yapping now but I thought that was kind of neat to share. Also taking three buses in the morning is such a pain.)

——

7. Teamwork

I've been in a lot of teams of different shapes and sizes and with different goals, from school projects to the basketball team and the SWC leadership team. Working in a team helps me learn a lot about myself and the world around me. I love hearing other people's perspectives as they always lead me to a new way of thinking. It's a good thing to be open-minded and be respectful of other people's ideas and opinions.

In a team, I like to have the role of someone that ties everything together with creativity and inspiration. I like to pitch things that can make something even more fun and dynamic with creative thinking.

I'm not really someone who likes pitching in my own ideas, but rather add on to other ideas. In the past, being a leader in SWC has been hard, especially when I had to decide on cabin themes and storylines, and I depended on my co-leaders ideas a lot. And I was always so scared to speak up and share my thoughts, or to say that I didn't think someone's suggestion would work. The thought of speaking up to people scares me so much, because I'm afraid of what it'll do to the way others perceive me. I've highlighted so many times that this is definitely my greatest weakness. I push past that weakness and do my best to pitch in my opinions, but that barrier still exists in my life.

I also have a tendency to deviate away from long-term goals. Another really hard thing for me when it comes to being a leader has always been staying on track. Last session I was very inactive, and our cabin didn't even get to finish the storyline. To be fair, most of the inactiveness was due to unforeseen circumstances and personal issues I don't wish to specifically mention. Regardless, the fact that I was late for everything and barely got to truly experience SWC that session was so saddening, and I questioned whether I was actually fit to ever be a leader again, hence going back to always being super self-conscious and sensitive. Either way, I've moved past that now, and I wish to be more prudent and do better this session if given the chance to do so. This session I want to focus on self-improvement and be a better person.

8. Leader Quality

Can I choose two? Can I please choose two? Pleasee?

I know the question said one, but I've been stuck on two options for the last hour and I really feel like both of them are essential to be a leader and compliment each other.

Integrity and Vision.

The definition of integrity is the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness. Thanks Google.

Integrity is something that I really value in everyone I meet. It's such an important aspect of someone's personality. Being someone of integrity means to be trustworthy, just, honest, faithful, and righteous, and all of those qualities are very impactful, in a positive way. Many people lack integrity, and it's always been something that has bothered me. If you lack integrity, you negatively affect yourself and those around you. A leader should be someone who should stand firm in just, truthful, honest, and positive values, and be committed to trustworthiness and honesty. Leaders like that are often the most successful ones.

This is where vision comes into play. Vision is the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom. Someone with vision sets goals, short and long term. Vision can be more of a neutral term, but in a more positive light, a person with vision strives for success for themselves and others. A leader should always have their team in mind when it comes to their vision, and know how it affects others. That's where vision and integrity mix to become something beautiful.

I'm not saying I'm the most honest person, no, I'm far from it. And I'm not a master of having visions, but I strive to embody both traits not only for myself, but for everyone around me and all those I meet.

———

9. Atmosphere

A cabin firmly geared towards making lasting friendships and memories, while engaging in friendly competition. A safe place for imagination to grow and flourish into something beautiful. (186 characters)

10. Checklist

- I am applying for leader and co-leader
- I have fully read the FAQ
- I am willing to make a promotional project for SWC

In the event of foreseen inactivity by me, I will immediately notify my fellow leaders and hosts. I'll transfer ownership of studios and divide any tasks in the meantime. In the event of unforeseen inactivity by me, I will try and contact the hosts using that website. In the event of unforeseen inactivity by other (co)leaders, I would check in first, then if I go unanswered, I will contact the hosts and ask for further guidance.

Rockie’s Leader App

2815 words ^^

About Me:

Hello all! I’m Rockie, a chaotic teen writer who uses she/her pronouns and resides in the PDT timezone. You’ll find that I spend most of my time at school or doing my various extracurriculars (speech and debate, tennis, and aerial silks), but I enjoy reading, listening to music, cooking, and writing in my free time! I have an obsession with all things Disney, and I love chatting with people, whether it be online or in person.
I love storytelling. I’ve been writing stories almost my whole life (seriously- I started my first novel in second grade), and there’s honestly never been a time when I didn’t see writing as my future. Something about the art of creating a story from nothing makes me feel incredibly powerful, like I can create something that could change the world.

Although I love writing my own stories, I also love experiencing them. I adore reading: being able to step into a world of enchantment, monsters, and chaos causes all of my problems to disappear as I fully immerse myself in the magic. And I truly believe reading is just that: magic.

Music is also an important part of my life. It’s rare that you’ll find me without my AirPods in, listening to Taylor Swift, Tate McRae, or Olivia Rodrigo. Music brightens the dullness of homework or a long car ride (speaking of which, I’m currently writing these words in the car, listening to I Can Do It With a Broken Heart). Music never fails to inspire me and make me happy.
I also love cooking! Creating delicious meals and treats for others to enjoy always brings a smile to my face, especially when the result is delicious. I really enjoy decorating cakes, making desserts, and creating fresh pasta, although one thing I love even more than making the food is eating it ;D
Finally, SWC (and Scratch in general) is a core part of me. The friends I’ve made in this camp in the years I’ve been here are so incredibly special, and my writing has improved in leaps and bounds thanks to SWC. I will forever be grateful to this crazily chaotic community for everything it’s given me, so thank you all <333
Experience:

I’ve been in SWC for ten sessions: I’ve been a camper four times, a co-leader four times, and a leader twice. I’ve also been in the memory book committee four times and the daily team twice! So I think it’s safe to say that I’m pretty experienced ;D

All of my sessions have been incredibly fun and they’ve taught me so much. For example, last July, I had to quickly pivot from a co-leader to a leader, and I learned how to be adaptable and manage my limited time. Last session, I focused on improving my writing and was able to practice balancing Scratch with my other irl responsibilities. I believe that my experience in past sessions will allow me to be an organized and engaging leader.
In terms of writing, I’ve had some success. I’ve been the two-time winner of an essay contest, had a poem published in an anthology, and am currently in the final round of judging for a prestigious national writing and art competition. (Wish me luck!) I also received an honorable mention in last session’s writing competition.

Outside of Scratch, I’ve had a fair bit of leadership experience. I’m currently serving as the Secretary of my school’s Executive Student Council, which has taught me organizational skills and how to be a good role model. I also serve as an assistant debate coach and have led a club in the past, as well as being a co-chair for multiple different school activities and projects. I’m also a student ambassador and give tours of my school to prospective parents.

All of these experiences have aided me in my past SWC sessions, and I believe that they will continue to do me well in the future.

Genres:

While I’d be interested in leading any cabin this session, there are a few I’d prefer more than others. I have two cabin ideas I’m really excited about, and those would be my top picks to lead.

Firstly, I’d absolutely love to lead a Fantasy cabin inspired by the movie Wonka. In this cabin, the campers would collaborate to open a shop in the Galeries Gourmet, and, each week, they’d travel to a new location to collect ingredients for their chocolate-making. Campers would work to individually create their own brand-new sweet from a selection of ingredients they can earn through writing challenges, and, in the last week of camp, they’d all open the shop together and put their candies on display for other campers to buy. However, the evil Chocolate Cartel will work to sabotage them, and together, they’ll have to combat the obstacles the Cartel places in their way.

Another cabin I’d like to lead is a poetry cabin called THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT. Think about it: 31 songs, 31 days in July, a Taylor swift album inspired by poetry… the opportunities are endless! I’d love to create a cabin inspired by the album, where campers are hired at the Tortured Poets Department and have to navigate challenges inspired by a song each day, all amidst poetry and songwriting workshops to help improve their writing. I think I and a lot of other people would really enjoy being in this cabin

If not those two cabins, there are a few others I’d like to lead: Epistolary, Mystery, Folklore, Fairy Tales, and Historical Fiction. While I don’t have fleshed-out ideas for these cabins, I believe my cos and I could come up with something cool!

On the flip side, some cabins I’d prefer not to lead are ones that I’ve been in recently, such as Thriller and Myth.

In terms of TCTWNW, I love the concept and the spirit of this cabin, however, as July is the month I have the most time to dedicate to SWC, I’d like to stretch myself and see how many points I can earn for my cabin. Therefore, I don’t believe it would align with my values this session, so I would prefer not to lead it.

Excerpt:

https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/post/7882615/ This is last session’s writing competition entry, which won a honorable mention!

Activity:

Since I’m on summer break, I don’t have much going on in July. However, I am going on a vacation from mid-June to early July, however, I still believe I’ll be able to complete all responsibilities within that time. On a normal day, I’ll be able to dedicate an hour and a half to SWC every weekday, and more on weekends. During my vacation, that number will likely decrease, but I’ll still be able to check in multiple times a day. I believe that I will have more than enough time to complete all of my responsibilities as leader!

Time Management:

In terms of time management, I believe that I’ve been improving a lot lately. 8th grade is definitely my most stressful school year so far, and balancing my homework with my extracurriculars and high school applications has taught me a lot about how to be responsible and organized.

With that said, I believe that my biggest strength in time management is my organization and efficiency. I’m usually the person that my classmates rely on to catch up if they missed class, because they know I’ll be on top of all the assignments and upcoming activities. I frequently utilize a planner to make sure I always know what I have to do every day. The action of checking off each task as I complete it is really rewarding, and having a visual guide of what I have to do is incredibly helpful for my personal work style. I’m one of the people who needs some sort of schedule or to-do list to function productively, but once I have that, I can basically do anything! I’m definitely a visual learner, and therefore using organizational tools I can see in front of me is the best way for me to get things done. This knowledge causes me to be quite organized and productive, allowing me to manage my time successfully.

Another strength I possess is my determination. Even if I’m not necessarily super excited about doing a task, when I decide to complete something, I do it. I’m very determined and focused when I commit myself to an assignment or activity, and even if it’s something as boring as math homework, I can complete it quickly and efficiently. I’m good at minimizing distractions when I’m working on something by putting away my phone or turning off the television, and I’m also good at utilizing things that improve my focus, such as listening to calming instrumentals or knowing when to take short breaks to keep myself from getting burnt out and decreasing my work quality.

I believe that my major weakness in time management is the fact that I sometimes take on too much. I volunteer for almost every opportunity I’m allowed, which means I have a LOT of activities and things I’m involved in. My habit of wanting to try everything I can might seem harmless at first, but it becomes a problem when I have too much stuff on my plate and not enough time to complete it all. This leads me to become overwhelmed and anxious, which is obviously not a good thing. Therefore, I’m working on stepping back a little and trying to evaluate whether I can realistically be an active participant in whatever I’m volunteering for before I decide to sign myself up. Additionally, whenever I feel myself starting to freak out about the amount of work I have, I’ve been practicing taking deep breaths and taking things one step at a time. This has allowed me to significantly improve my time management and made me a better worker and a happier person.

Collaboration:

I believe that one of my greatest strengths in collaboration is my passion. I’m an incredibly hard worker and I’m always willing to help out when someone needs a hand. Scratch Writing Camp has had an immeasurable impact on me, and I’d really love to create an incredible experience for others who discovered the sign-up project and decided to comment, not knowing their life would be changed forever. Therefore, whenever I’m working with others within SWC, I’m always passionate about what I’m doing and will do whatever I can to make this camp a better place. I always try my best to be as active as possible in the cabin by answering questions, updating word counts and points as often as I can, and overall being a great leader, simply because I love and care about SWC so much. Passion is the tool I use to get through any challenges, because no matter how frustrating an obstacle is, I will always love whatever it is that I’m doing.

Additionally, another strength of mine is my ability to communicate and compromise successfully. I know the importance of including everyone in an activity, whether it be a group project or a cabin. I know that there’s no “I” in “team”, and therefore I try to make sure everyone feels like an important part of the team and that opinions and ideas are valued and appreciated. I love to build people up, because I realize how much a few single words can change someone’s entire day.

In terms of more practical assets, I believe that I can contribute my talent for graphic design. I’m also mediocre at art and coding, so if need be, I can help with that as well!

Now, my greatest weakness: perfectionism. I’m a person who wants everything I do to be successful, and I have incredibly high standards for myself. This becomes a problem in a group setting because, when I ask someone to do something and it doesn’t turn out the way I want it to, I sometimes have the urge to correct it. However, I’m working on stepping back and allowing others to execute the task in their own way, because the result is often better than anything I could have ever dreamed of. I’m realizing that the best part of a team is the fact that everyone brings their own unique views to an issue and combines their own styles to create an amazing cabin.

Additionally, a side effect of my high standards is a sort of low self-confidence and imposter syndrome when I fail to meet my expectations for myself. I’m getting better at being more confident, but I start to doubt myself when someone changes something I worked hard on, such as replacing a page I designed in the memory book or discarding an idea I had for our cabin. Even though it’s not a big deal, it still sometimes damages my confidence and causes me to doubt my abilities. However, I’m working on improving my self-confidence and becoming more sure of myself, and I believe that this will make me a better leader and collaborator.

One Quality:

The one quality I value most in a leader is responsibility. I believe that a responsible person is one who is reliable, capable and passionate about their work. A responsible leader knows how to get things done and can be counted on to keep the cabin running, no matter what. They take control over themselves, but are able to step back and let others lead when need be. They work as a team and are collaborative and respectful, and overall are incredibly self-aware and prepared. Without a responsible captain, the ship will sink. If you don’t have a leader you can rely on, and if that leader fails to take initiative and own up to their actions, then the cabin will suffer. Therefore, I believe responsibility is the most important trait a leader can have.

Personally, I try my best to be responsible in whatever I do, mostly because I don’t want to be the person that lets others down. My time management skills allow me to complete tasks efficiently, and my reliability comes into play because you can always count on me to complete whatever work I’m allotted. I always try my best in whatever I’m doing, whether it’s leading a cabin or completing geometry homework. I’m an incredibly trustworthy person (and I’m great at keeping secrets! I’m the designated therapist in my friend group lol), and I’m also someone who takes responsibility for their actions when they mess up. I try my best not to blame others for my mistakes, and I am someone who is always on top of things and tries their best to be informed at all times. I’ve had responsibility drilled into me from a young age (my school’s pledge includes the line “I accept responsibility for my actions and words”, which I’ve been living by for nine years), and I believe that I can be a responsible and prepared leader who will create an amazing cabin.

Atmosphere:

I aim to create a fun-filled cabin focused on reaching goals and forging lasting friendships, with an exciting storyline, a healthy dose of competition, and a kind, supportive environment! (188 characters)

Checkboxes + More

Yup, I’m applying for both leader and co-leader.
No, I’m not just applying for co-leader.
Yes, I’m willing to share a SWC promo project!

I’m able to complete all leadership responsibilities listed in the FAQ.

In the case of a co-leader suddenly going MIA, I will first wait a couple of days to make sure they’re truly gone. During that time, I might remind them to check our cabin planning forum or send notifications to their profile if I notice that they’re online, but not communicating. If they come back during that time, I would discuss the inactivity with them and help them figure out how to navigate the problem moving forward.
After a few days have passed with no contact, I would notify the hosts and let them know of my co-leader’s inactivity, and figure out how best to handle the situation. This might mean readjusting tasks or, if necessary, accepting a new co-leader as a replacement.

If I suddenly have to go inactive, I will first and foremost notify the hosts, leaders, and my co-leaders of the sudden change. As someone who has personally experienced the sudden shift from a leader going inactive, I will do the best I can to help my cos with the transition, hopefully by staying online for a few more days at the very least, and, if possible, cheering on my co-leaders throughout the session, even if it’s not in the same capacity. I will try my best to make sure that my co-leaders are fully equipped to handle the situation, but I believe that unless something completely tragic and unexpected happens, I won’t have to go inactive.

swc leader application - text version
total words (w/ excerpt): 1617
total words (w/o excerpt): 1321

1. tell us about yourself! please include your nickname, pronouns, and (optionally) your timezone.
Ahoy! I’m pleased to introduce myself as Alex. I use the pronouns she/her. I’m 13 years old and halfway through eighth grade. I’m from the country of Argentina, so my timezone is ART, and an Adventist of the Seventh Day.
Time to bring out the personality quizzes :> I’m an ESFP/ENTP, a lawful good, and an enneagram type 6.
Some of my favorite things include coding, writing, reading, and math! And I watch way too much Youtube these days.
My favorite food is my mom’s empanadas. My favorite fruits are grapes and mangos.
According to my friends, my likes are controversial lol. A few things I don’t like that apparently are hot takes: pizza, watermelons, brownies, jam, cherries. (Will I get angry comments? /j)

I hope you enjoy playing through my application! :)
2. have you previously participated in swc? if so, in what roles? in either case, what experience do you have with writing and/or leadership positions on and off scratch?
I have done SWC 9 times, which is a scary amount o.0 Four times as a camper, four times as a co-leader, and once as a leader.
SWC has helped me greatly in both the writing and leadership aspects.
Regarding writing, it’s the main reason I am fluent in English and the source of my interest in creative writing.
Being a leader has taught me how to work collaboratively, how to motivate and support others, and effectively communicate ideas. It’s also made me a little less afraid or anxious about these types of positions thanks to the comfort of the different people in the community.
3. which cabins would you prefer to lead? please also include how you feel about (co)leading the cabin that will not win, whether your preferences are ordered, and if you have any pre-existing ideas for them!
My ideas are not so fleshed out as I hope to expand on them with my co-leaders, but here’s a basic outline of them! (In preference order)
An espionage recruitment/secret organization. I think it would also be very interesting to explore this idea from Dystopian or Fantasy. I would love to do like a “spying on the government” thing? Overthrowing the government but secretly? Committing arson anonymously? ;D
I’d use Fantasy as an excuse to add magical powers into the equation /lh
An airport/travel centered cabin, where campers visit different countries and cultures and learn different facts about them. I think this would go best with the Adventure, Non-Fi, or Real-Fi genres.
A cooking competition. Campers can be divided into teams (word count groups) and have a cook-off :0 Real-Fi seems like a good fit for this idea.
I’d rather not lead TCTWNW this session since I will have more time to be active and contribute points! I’m also a really competitive person, and I love the excitement and thrill of fighting for first place with other cabins.
4. please provide an excerpt of your writing.
Ivy checked the mailbox, always waiting for a new letter. She was pretty nervous, since she had opened up a lot in her last letter. Ivy was afraid that her older sister, Anne-Marie, would stop responding, or just call her a little kid for telling her her true feelings. Looked for a letter every single day. And finally, it arrived.
“Being a critic, judging every single person's actions is just common human nature.” Ivy read at the start of her newly received letter. “That's what I used to think. That everyone was looking at me, thinking and having their own opinions about me. I had to repeatedly tell myself that (and as I write this, it sounds extremely egocentric) everyone has better things to do than looking at me, and that nobody even cares.” That last part hit Ivy kind of hard. She continued reading. “I felt like this when I was younger. And it still happens to me, right now. As you grow up, you'll realize no one gives a mango.” She chuckled. How did her sister manage to add a sprinkle of humor to each of her letters? “Especially in high school, where everyone is focused on graduating, getting good grades. Or you know, on whatever they want. But just know this: nobody, absolutely nobody, is judging, looking, or criticizing you. So chill down, and enjoy :)” The little smiley face evoked yet another chuckle from Ivy's face. The letter continued. “Maybe watching too many teen shows made me feel like a main character, that everyone is always focusing on. And I like to think everyone felt like this at some point. But this is just a phase. It will end.
Love you, Anne-Marie.
P.S.: Coming home next month! Are you missing me yet?”
5. what amount of time do you expect to be able to dedicate to swc? what plans do you have that could affect your activity?
I expect to be able to dedicate at least one hour a day to SWC (even though it’ll probably end up being more), and it will most likely be from 10-12pm UTC. As of now, I don’t have any other activities or plans apart from school. I’ll have two weeks of winter break in July, though, that will increase my activity levels.
I’m not active on Saturdays because of religious reasons.
6. what are your skills and shortcomings in time management?
One of my skills is that I’m motivated by deadlines. I hate not finishing things - so if I, due to procrastination, for example - left something to the last day, that last day I will have much more motivation to do it.
This can also double as a weakness, though. This mindset can make me stay up late (heck, it’s even happening right now - I’m writing this at 11pm on a school night xD) or rush things in order to get them ready on time.
I procrastinate on some things or get easily distracted with whatever I find. Most likely, singing along to music or scrolling through Shorts.
However, I’m a sucker for all things organization. Simple things like spreadsheets, lists, headings (this app was planned on a seven-page Google Doc lol), or color-coding stuff really help me focus on what I’m doing (good luck getting me to do something without worrying about if it’s sorted in alphabetical order /lh).
I have trouble stopping what I’m doing and taking care of myself. I’m not sure if this is where this shortcoming fits, but this question seems like the best place for it. What I mean is, it’s hard for me to, for example, stop writing leader app responses and go eat dinner (even though I’m hungry), or go to sleep, even when I know I should be sleeping right now and I calculate how many hours of sleep I’ll get and I know this is unhealthy and I know I need more *ahem*.
7. what are your strengths and weaknesses in working with others? what assets would you bring to a leading team?
I consider myself a good leader. Even though sometimes I struggle with voicing what I want to do or I resign myself to what others want to avoid conflicts, I know how to lead a group, delegate responsibilities, and listen to everyone’s suggestions and perspectives.
Even though I avoid conflicts, if I find myself in one, I treat the situation calmly, trying to mediate or find common ground.
I put too much pressure on myself to do things (perfectionism). I need something to be very high-quality to be satisfied with my work. This has been something I’ve struggled with for a long time. However, I’m learning to just let things go, and be more chill about them. I remind myself that it’s okay to make mistakes. For example, if I’m worried about a school project, I tell myself it’s the project that’s getting graded, not me. And that I shouldn’t let this one grade define me. This perfectionism tendency also comes with worrying about what other people will think of what I do, say, or think and wanting to meet everybody’s expectations all the time (people pleasing).
8. what one quality do you value most in a leader? how will you embody this trait as a leader?
I believe one of the most valuable qualities in leadership is responsibility. Knowing how to step up, taking ownership of your mistakes and doing all you can to make up for them, and keeping promises are all key elements to collaboration - and after all, that’s what leading is about.
If I get chosen as a leader, I will show responsibility by:
  • Maintaining clear and honest communication with all members. I will make an effort to make my ideas and opinions seen (which, as I have mentioned, is something I struggle with). I’ll tell the truth, because SWC is a place I’ve grown to be comfortable in, where no one judges.
  • Being respectful and constructive when I’m critiquing others’ work. I will always take a polite approach, highlighting the good things apart from giving suggestions.
  • Having a clear priority order. This session, one of my main goals will be to take better care of myself, with everything that that includes, like sleeping more or being hydrated. But this also means giving SWC importance, since this is something I signed up for willingly.
  • Being committed. If I say I’ll do something, I’ll do it, and if I need help completing it, I will ask.
9. what cabin atmosphere do you aim to create?
(153 characters)
“I’m aiming for a more competitive and active cabin, with a fast-paced, interactive, and complex storyline. I want my cabin to be thrilling and memorable.”
10. a. check those that apply:
☑ I am applying for both leader and co-leader.
I am applying only for co-leader.
☑ I’m willing to share a promotional project for SWC.

b. are there any leadership responsibilities listed in the faq that you cannot complete? if any, please elaborate.
No, I believe myself capable of and I commit to completing all responsibilities listed. I have experience in this position and know what it entails.
If I were to find myself in a position where I’m unable to complete any of them, though, I would notify the hosts and ask for help from other fellow leaders.

c. in the case of inactive leadership (either by yourself, or by a fellow leader), what steps will you take to ensure that the cabin can still move on smoothly?
Should I need to become inactive, I would notify the hosts, fellow leaders, and my campers as soon as possible and do my best to still be available through the inactivity period. I’d be honest about the reason and expected duration of it.
If another leader became inactive, I’d help with re-distributing their tasks and with the selection of a new leader if needed. I would also offer support to them if they’re going through something demotivating or struggling with things.

Text Based Answers for my SWC Leader Application!!!

1) Helloooo there fellow writers! My name is Crocs (she/her) and I’m your everyday 15 year old writer from the East Coast. (Well, maybe not everyday…ever met someone who had to go to the ER because she got her finger stuck in her Grandma’s VCR player? Well, now you have! ) Outside of Scratch and my many trips to hospitals, I participate in many sports and activities. I play tennis and golf for my school teams and also compete competitively during the summer. ¡Estoy aprendiendo Español! If you don’t understand that, it means that I am learning Spanish as part of a course at my school and in Spanish Club. In two years, I plan to apply to be a foreign exchange student. I also am a part of Reading Club, Reading Competition, Nation Junior Honor Society (Treasurer), Best Buddies , (President), Student Council (President), and finally Quiz Team. Whenever I have free time from all these activities, I like to read, watch movies, and write. My favorite book currently The Sun is Also a Star, my favorite movie is The Florida Project, and a story I am writing at the moment follows a fictional kingdom run by children. (Spoiler alert: look out for the caves!)

2) I have participated in many sessions of SWC, both as a camper and a co-leader. Here’s a complete list off all sessions I have been apart of!

Sci-Fi Camper March 2024
Hi-fi Camper March 2023
Contemporary Camper July 2021
Mythology Co-Leader November 2021
Hi-Fi Camper March 2021
Contemporary Camper November 2020
Sci-fi Camper March 2020

In addition, there have been a few other camps I have done in the past that were not part of SWC. Those are:

(SWBC) Ash Group Camper May 2020
(DWC) Mythology Leader February 2020

Overall, I have had a lot of experience in writing in general and also in writing camps. After COVID I had to go back to the real world which didn’t allow me to have as much time online, but I am extremely grateful that I am getting back into Scratch!

3) While I have no specific preference for a cabin, a fantasy genre or sub-genre would be something I would love leading and creating backstories for! (Fantasy, Hi-Fi, Sc-Fi, etc.) I grew up reading many book series like Percy Jackson, Harry Potter, and The Land of Stories. This had a huge influence on my young mind which led me to love anything magical. In addition, I would rather not lead The Cabin That Will Not Win, mostly because my favorite thing about SWC is the light, but very competitive aspect about it. Saying this, however, I will gladly assist anyone in that cabin who needs help, ideas, or critique. Finally, here's two of my favorite ideas I have come up with for cabins:

Fantasy: Magical Island theme!! Campers must earn supplies to maintain life on the island while also unlocking new areas that reveal the hidden magic around the area.

Sci-Fi: Moon landing. While NASA's mission to the moon was totally real, campers will role play as fictitious astronauts exploring a new planet with many mysteries.

4) https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/759864/?page=1#post-7964618

5) Summer summer summer summer summer summer!!!!! If you can’t tell I’m only just a littleee bit excited for summer to arrive. I finally will be free of all my school work and activities, which means I can spend more time online and on Scratch! In July, the only events I have set in stone is a family vacation to Canada, though I am not sure if this will be set. (During the beginning or en of the month) Obviously, this will impact my activity, but I believe that having a way to enter Scratch on my phone, even just for a few minute to check in with everything, will not deal a huge problem to me or the camp. I plan to dedicate at least an hour or two every day in July to just Scratch and SWC related items. My writing has really started to develop in the past few months and I already have ideas to share them on the platform, even outside of SWC. This will give me more time to connect with others during camp if I am chosen for a leader or co-leader position.

6) Being honest, time management has always been a problem for me. I either finish things too fast if I enjoy doing them, or put off boring things until the last minute where I complete them quickly to “just get it done with”. It’s hard to find a perfect middle where I complete things exactly on time with the best quality. SWC has always given me opportunities to work on my time management. I really enjoy writing and I believe that the competitive aspect of the camp makes me want to do my best work possible, while also getting it done in a timely matter.

7) Another set of skills I posses is my team work ethic and positive relationships. I love to connect with others and create things together. My favorite part of the last session was our collaborative story that my cabin created together. Being able to see what I have helped create, along with help with others, was something that definitely highlighted my camp experience. Leading a cabin or team would come very easy to me and I feel that I could excel in that aspect. With my bonding attitude, but also sense of leadership, I believe as a leader that I could bring new ideas and work to a cabin. I also have a lot of experience being a leader, as I am President and team captain in a lot of my clubs and sports.

8) A leader should be respectful. Yes, that may sound like something a elementary school teacher would tell you, but I truly believe that the best leaders show respect and kindness to everyone. As a leader or co-leader, I would certainly embody this trait. I would respect everyone in the camp and show that I hear them and their ideas, even if I don’t agree with them. With so many leaders and so so many camps, not everyone is going to agree on one certain thing. A leader that is respectful can put their say in without hurting anyone’s feelings or put anyone down. Another part I think is very important is the pyramid of power. (That sounded so nerdy I’m so sorry-) If you can hear me out, leaders and co-leaders are kind of in the middle of this pyramid. They have those above them, like hosts, and those below them, like campers. Everyone has different responsibilities and things they must complete, but treating all these levels with respect can help you form better relationships and bonds. This is why I believe that respect is so important to a leader and why I strive to demonstrate this trait.

9) My cabin would be a mix of friendly competitiveness that clashes with developing oneself by writing inside and outside the cabin. Campers can also develop their skills by converging with their cabin.

10) A. Yes, this is an application for both leader and co-leader. Yes, I am more than willing to share a promotional project. B. Nope! There are no issues I have with the responsibilities listed. (: C. In an issue where a leader becomes inactive, my plan is to have all the cabin set up and plans done much before camp starts. In this way, if someone goes inactive, everything will already be completed. The only small issue in this is that other leaders will have to pick up some extra responsibilities, but that is expected when someone goes active.

THIS IS NOT DONE YET LOOOOOOOL

Question 1 – AUSTRALIAN ANIMALS
Hi there <3 I’m Amethyst (she/her), and I’m a Christian Australian AEST-er. I’ve been interested in writing ever since I was introduced to it 7 years ago, and have adored this website for 6 years, spanning many accounts and far-too-many embarrassing attempts at coding a game.

Question 2 – SECRET LIGHT
Absolutely! I have been in 5 sessions so far. Last session, I was a member of the memory book committee, panelist, and co-leading the epic Fairy Tales alongside absolutely incredible Alana and awesome Sienna. This session, I have been accepted to be one of six daily team coordinators – people who decide upon, and help construct the dailies and weeklies to be used in July. I won the Juniors category for SWC two sessions ago, and I also held a major leader role in my old school at the same time. I have also been in many irl writing camps (eek!), but unfortunately, cabin wars does not exist in those

Question 3 – HERITAGE
Although I love a variety of genres, I would like to steer clear of TCTWNW, and any themes in the likes of Horror and Bizzaro Fiction. Cabins such as Tragedy, Thriller and Mystery are all fine, though. If in doubt, please ask in the comments – I’ll be happy to answer ^^

Fairy Tales last session was incredible – so much fun, so much collaboration, and the end result was well-worth it. But the storyline was also super complicated, and now that I am in a variety of other commitments within SWC, I would prefer a cabin that’s storyline doesn’t require excessive, hours-a-day planning. I am totally fine with a storyline that has some depth or complexity – in fact, I revel in those kinds of cabins. Again, if you are unsure of what this means, please let me know <3

Question 4
Screaming crying perfect storms

Question 5
Tying back to Question 3, I would rather not spend more than 2 hours a weekday exclusively on the cabin planning and making. Although I am totally fine with going over this limit a few times throughout the planning stages, and a few times throughout the camp (especially on days like cabin wars and the first few days), I’m hoping I won’t need to allocate more than 2 hours just to plan. Again, I absolutely LOVE planning, but I noticed my schedule was getting super cramped last year and I was spending time on SWC when I should’ve been doing homework (cue desperately doing homework last minute). This limit is totally fine to be stretched to 4 hours on weekends, although I doubt that there will be enough to dedicate that much time without finishing whatever I’m working on.

I will be going to a real (gasp? outdoors?) camp for 4 days in July, where we are not permitted to take electronics. Although this is unfortunate, I would be more than happy to take a pen and paper and brainstorm or work on the weeklies and dailies in my free time there, as well as brainstorm or work on writing something in SWC. No camp will ever be better than SWC >

Question 6 – TLDR
Alas, time management. I run on the do-things-you-don’t-want-to-do-first schedule. You know how you eat the stuff you don’t like first so you can savor the delicious things without worrying about having to eat the stuff you don’t like– oh? You don’t understand the analogy?

(frankly I don’t blame you. The only person I’ve ever seen do this is my dad. Lol i wonder where my analogy came from)

Essentially, I like doing the annoying things – the stuff I don’t want to do, or dislike doing – so I can enjoy being able to do the things I enjoy, without, well, feeling guilty. This analogy unfortunately does not translate over to the more urgent things – just things I dislike more. So, instead of working on that weekly which is due tomorrow, let’s work on the homework that is due next week – after all, I love doing weeklies and dailies, but homework is *ugh*. I am trying to get out of this habit but it’s darn hard.

For example, right now as I’m writing this, I’ve just finished the History work set for my class. I finished it really quick because… well… I wanted to do this. The rest of my classmates are all procrastinating completing the work – doodling in the margins, searching up irrelevant topics – whilst I focused on getting the work done so I can do this without feeling the need to complete parts of my work in the middle of writing this script.

I also have this handy thing of: FORGETTING STUFF IS DUE! Luckily with new technology I can set alarms – and I do that Every. Single. Time. I need to do something now – but that often applies to me with irl school and homework.

Thank goodness alarms exist.

TLDR; I do things I dislike or don’t want to do before things I enjoy, however I will do the thing I dislike ASAP.

Question 7 – LYRICS (and therein lines the issue, friends don’t try to trick you)
Strengths – I love people, especially SWC-ers. I’d consider myself an extrovert with no social anxiety whatsoever, and I’m that one friend my friends beg to talk to the assistant on where to find a specific shirt, order food from Maccas, anything that requires talking to strangers. I have no problem being direct but polite about my intentions. I revel in making canvas and writing descriptions.

Weaknesses – Relating to my time management point, if things are fun, I will push them back to do the not-so-fun things first! I find working on canva and designing things super fun, so I won’t work on that before getting the gritty stuff done.

Question 8
I believe that engagement is one of the most important leadership qualities there is. If a person doesn’t have a passion or isn’t willing to do their part, the productivity of the entire team drops drastically. Although I do have trouble with valuing what’s most urgent over what’s more enjoyable, I will always try my hardest to do the least enjoyable things as quickly as I can if there is something more enjoyable that is also more urgent.

Question 9
The atmosphere that I aim to create is a competitive and supportive cabin. A cabin that cares for, uplifts and encourages fellow campers in times of low motivation is the best kind.

Question 10
A: I am applying for only co-leader. I am willing to share a promotional video for SWC.
B: I can complete all of these leadership responsibilities. The only issue would be a 3 night camp in the middle of July, in which I will only have 2 days cut off entirely from SWC.
C: In the case of inactive leadership done by others, I will be more than happy to step in and cover for them until they return. If they do not come back within a timeframe that can be discussed between the two of us, we could take a look at other leader applications and choose a (co)leader to step in until they return. If I am the one causing inactivity without notice, it is almost certain that there is something preventing Internet use entirely. Although it would be worthwhile to check if there are any power outages in Australia (which rarely happens), it would be great if it is decided to allow another person to take my role until I return.

Ink swatches ✒ Summer's Leader Application
(1286 words)

1. Tell us about yourself!

Hello, my name is Summer! I live in the BST time zone and I use she/her pronouns. I like fountain pens and inks, which were the inspiration for my application theme, and baking. I have recently started to play Project Sekai, and the music you are hearing is featured in the game. The story aspect of the game is one of my favourites as the characters and how they interact with each other are all fascinating.

I love to read and write, as well. I am currently reading ‘Notes From Underground’ by Dostoevsky and reading the narrator’s thoughts about different topics has been very interesting. However, I do enjoy reading in a variety of genres, such as dystopia and fantasy. Drinking tea is something that I like too, especially when writing. I also have a dog named Tilly, who is cute but mischievous!

2. Have you previously participated in SWC?

I have participated in SWC five times so this will be my sixth session! (Which will make 2 years of SWC )

In March and November 2020, and in July and November 2023, I participated as a camper. In March 2021, I was a co-leader for the Contemporary cabin with Robin, which was a very fun experience! I learnt a lot about how to lead effectively and all of the responsibilities that are part of being a leader.

I also have had many leadership positions outside of Scratch. In school, I have helped lead many projects, such as tutoring students in younger classes, and have been a representative for my class for the school council and form captain. All of these opportunities have taught me how to communicate with others and how to cooperate well with other people.

In terms of writing, it is a hobby that I have had for many years now and still love to this day! I have written in several different genres, from romance to adventure, and I aim to keep improving my writing skills in the future.

3. Which cabins would you prefer to lead?

I would prefer to lead (in no particular order) Epistolary or Historical-Fiction!

For Epistolary, my idea is focused around campers trying to solve a mystery involving the cabin leaders, one of which has stolen an important letter. Information and clues would be given in the form of letters, and the campers would be able to gain clues by completing tasks, such as dailies and weeklies. My idea for Hi-Fi is more relaxed, but I think having a cabin based in a ballroom with a royal theme would be quite fun!

I would be happy to lead the Cabin That Will Not Win as I have experienced personally how helpful a non-competitive environment can be to allow you to focus on improving your writing skills. However, as my idea for Epistolary involves friendly competition between the campers, I would prefer to lead TCTWNW only for other genres.

I wouldn't prefer to lead the Horror or Thriller cabins because I personally don't have a lot of experience writing in these genres.

4. Please provide an excerpt of your writing.

My excerpt can be found here: https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/759270/?page=1#post-7959140

It’s a piece analysing the character Alice from ‘Goodbye, My Rose Garden’, a spectacular manga that I highly recommend.

5. What amount of time do you expect to be able to dedicate to SWC?

I will be able to dedicate at least an hour each day to SWC!

I have school until the 12th of July but it won’t impact my activity too much so I will be able to check in regularly. I also have a concert on the 14th of July which means I will be less active on that day, however I will be free to log on in the morning before and evening afterwards.

Apart from that, I have no other plans that will impact my activity during the month.

6. What are your skills and shortcomings in time management?

My strength in terms of time management is that I am good at prioritising tasks. When I am given a list of things that need to be completed, I am able to plan out in what order I should complete them to make sure that everything gets done on time.

My shortcoming is that I am not very good at multitasking and I prefer to work on one thing at a time, which isn’t ideal when there are many things to do. Despite this, I have been committed to scheduling my time efficiently so that I can finish everything that is required of me. Furthermore, if I feel that I am unable to complete all of my tasks, I know that I can talk to other people and ask them to help me to ensure that everything is completed.

7. What are your strengths and weaknesses in working with others?

When working with others, my strength is that I am able to merge ideas well together and make final decisions while bearing in my mind everyone’s suggestions, which is especially important when working in a team. I am also a creative person and can come up with many ideas when brainstorming. As a result, when planning and developing a cabin or having to find solutions for an unexpected problem, I often have different ideas and solutions that may be helpful.

On the other hand, I can be controlling when collaborating with others because I want to help ensure that our project is the best that it can be. However, I’m working on asking more often for the ideas that the people I am working with have, and for them to share the knowledge and expertise that they have. When people are able to use the skills that they have, and can take on responsibilities that they are capable of, the final product is always a wonderful combination of everyone’s abilities, which is one of the best parts of working in a team.

8. What one quality do you value most in a leader?

The quality that I value most in a leader is dedication. Throughout my sessions in SWC, one of the main things that stood out to me about the leaders is how they were all passionate and motivated. I have always admired how they developed cabins and their themes, interacted with campers, and made SWC such an enjoyable experience. I will embody this trait as a leader by carefully planning out my cabin with my fellow leaders so that it is engaging for our campers, such as by planning an in-cabin mystery for them to solve. Additionally, I will regularly spend time with my campers throughout the month so that they feel welcomed and have fun during SWC.

9. What cabin atmosphere do you aim to create?

I aim to create a lively cabin that is focused on developing the writing skills of campers, as well as enjoying friendly competition and making new friends. (157 characters)

10. Questions

A:
☑ I am applying for both leader and co-leader.
☐ I am applying only for co-leader.
☑ I’m willing to share a promotional project for SWC.

B:
I am able to complete all of the leadership responsibilities.

C:
If I become inactive, I would notify the hosts and my co-leaders. I would also discuss with my co-leaders the responsibilities they would need to take on and how they could share them. If a fellow leader becomes inactive, I would ask them about their inactivity and notify the hosts. I would then work with the other co-leaders to manage the tasks of the leader and find solutions to completing the leader’s responsibilities, such as creating new word count studios for the campers.

in which i want to feel accomplished (so i'm sharing my partially-finished answers?)
notes to self:
a. there are. way too many emojis please work on that :sob:
2. why so many parenshethes

done! mostly
everything, and by that i mean literally every word past the break totals to 2976 according to google docs. purely answers (excluding the excerpt) is around 2594 words!

-

(foreword? idk guys) hi everyone!! welcome to the fruit stand :) hopefully you’re all having a nice day, and if not, hopefully this makes things better somehow?? anyways, thanks for clicking on my app, and further, for clicking on this tiny inconspicuous question mark,, here’s some instructions:
you’ve gotten this far already so i’ll just assume you got past the intro ;)
hover over the fruits to see what lies beneath them! (just do it) (disclaimer: the three furthest to your left hold no treasures)
click them (fruits) to read the answers, click again to either exit or advance to the next slide <3
i put instructions for managing music in the instructions! there’s a text version linked there too,, have fun!
1. about me (name, pronouns, timezone)
~
hey there yall <3 itsa me, veni, for those who haven’t seen me around before (nice to meet you!) you might also know me as juli,, i go by she/any pronouns, and i reside somewhere along the lovely eastern shore (edt?)
i’m currently a chaotic middle-school student (although these are the last months i’m able to say this :sad-wink:), i’m mostly introverted but love to be energetic around my friends. sometimes i enjoy pondering existence and then having an existential crisis about it, but i like to cope with the crushing weight of my thoughts by telling stories. plotlines for these (usually fantastical) stories often bounce around my mind like those dvd screensavers :>
alongside writing, i hoard hobbies like crystals - which i blame on my unbearably short attention span. reading’s always a fun one, and as the fancy people say it, it’s a little “window into another world” - anyways, nothing’s changed from my last half-million leader apps, percy jackson’s still my favorite!! (i’m interested in many other franchises as well but ask me about that later hehe). my life heavily revolves around the arts, starting from tangible art art: digital and traditional drawing, crochet sometimes, and also pressing flowers because there’s something so therapeutic about looking for blooms then preserving them? like hello why haven’t i been doing this earlier?? and then performing arts (love performing hate doing it alone), like dance, music (violinist and pianist!!). more recently, actually listening to music too (not onstage ofc)
i kind of hold a love-hate relationship with the world. it’s awful sometimes but also enjoyable and pretty? (shoutout to the sea, sun, & moon by the way) :0 my life goal is to travel and see every corner of the earth someday <3 besides this i’m struggling with my future and my counselor hates me for it :skull:
can you see i’ve developed as a person? because hey this is a lot maybe we should move on :sob:
2. past participation (roles, leading and writing experience)
~
this session’ll be my eleventh - pretty far from my first nearly 3-and-a-half years ago, but still just as exciting! i’ve been around since march 2021, sometimes more active than other times, but hey - thank you to you all for basically raising me ever since fifth grade by the way; i’ve learned so much more than just how to write - leadership, responsibility, and a good half of my personality to name a few :P here are my records if you’re interested, but you’re welcome to skip over:

march ‘21, myth camper // july ‘21, poetry fireside camper // nov ‘21, hi-fi empire co leader // march ‘22, horror avenue co // july ‘22, fantasy coven co // nov ‘22, mystery express co // march ‘23, bi-fi wonderland co // july ‘23, lit fi lunchroom camper // nov ‘23, illu fi village leader! // march ‘24, poetry valley camper

if you did skim through, which i don’t blame you for haha, here’s some quick stats which are probably more useful: camper x4, co leader x5, leader x1! i’ve been in the memory book committee pretty much all (co)leading sessions, daily team once, and i’ve been mentioned in the writing comp twice maybe? but yeah as much as i love you guys let’s stray outside swc a bit ;)
starting within the bounds of scratch, i’ve been in scratch art camp before, as well as leading in a small aesthetics camp and co-hosting a photography one a while back! truly moving away from scratch now, i’m a member of njhs and student government in this scary place called real life,,? although i hold no significant role in these two things, i’ve had the chance to work with others and learn to be a leader in my small community. some other past clubs of mine are stage crew and yearbook (both of which are actually fun ^^)
as for writing, it’s still mostly just a hobby so far, something i started back during the pandemic to fill the empty space - i don’t share my stories with people irl often but i hope to work on that!
3. preferred cabins? (cabin ideas, tctwnw)
~
so! i’m fine with any genres cabin-wise, really, they’re all so unique and fun to work with in their own ways. one of my favorite things about writing is being able to explore new things - i actually find it really motivating! since i’m applying for co leader, my cabin preferences are even looser this time. with all that though, i still have a comfort zone, aka my favorite genres and most frequented in no order: anything fantasy-fiction, anything surreal (i love slapping out pretty words and leaving it to the reader, also vice versa and bonus points if it’s slightly eerie), and mythology related themes. at the moment, i’ve been enjoying writing calmer short-stories, with less action if that makes sense. i also think that these would be fun to build a cabin around especially since i know them fairly well already :)
i don’t have a lot of cabin ideas so far, but i could probably come up with more once there’s a set theme!some loose ones for the moment are islands (“common” but i like them since they make the cabin feel like their own world), space-related (you could really slap anything in space and it’d be 110% cooler), and floating islands? in space, perhaps?
as for tctwnw, i think that’s really the only cabin i would not want to co lead - seriously, it turns out so cool and friendly each and every time but i’m too attached to swc’s competitive aspect </3 like i can see the draw in a calm environment, but i don’t know if i could pull it off plus i like points :P
4. excerpt
~
each and every one of my footsteps echoed throughout the vast garden, except they never seemed to fade. they grew softer with time, but i still felt them ring in my ear, layering on top of each other like an eerie cacophony - musical, but not quite a melody. the deeper i wandered into the nest of vines and moss, the more it felt like someone, something was trying to push me away. it was like being underwater, in a way, but with an underlying sense to run. but i knew that even if i did, i wouldn't make it far. everything was too slow…
hm, where was i?
despite it being a thought, the words filled the air, blending with the sounds of my footfalls…and were those my soft breaths? my heartbeat? i slowed to a stop, and took a good look around, although my head didn't turn nearly as quickly as i'd wanted it to.
there's flowers, first of all. and they're everywhere - blinking, i'm not sure how i hadn't noticed them before. or perhaps, they hadn't even been there before. they seem to be in every color imaginable, and even some that i'd never imagined existed. that's not what's so off-putting about them, however - there's got to be millions of flowers, and they're all facing towards… me.
where are you?

~ from a daily i wrote early last session <3
let me know if you want a longer excerpt or a different one by the way
5. time to dedicate (plans?)
~
for me, july conveniently lands itself in the midst of summer break. i should be free from school by then, which means no homework and mostly just me at home doing nothing! (unfortunately, this happens to imply that i have no life… uh, i promise i do, it’s just very clustered towards the school year?) so yeah, no long-term commitments, just days here and there where i’ll be volunteering or enjoying myself for no longer than a few hours. i’m not so sure about summer vacations as of now, my family currently has one planned for august but it might be moved up or other - whatever happens, i’ll be sure to let the right people know. i usually have a device on me most times anyway :) all in all, i should be able to dedicate at least 2 or 3 hours a day during the session.
the problem lies in the planning period, where i’ll be wrapping up my middle school career :sob: but even then, i’m mostly done with finals and tests, and by the time i post my app the busiest week’ll just about be done as well. up until mid-june, my activity will be more spotty and inconsistent (think 15 minute periods, multiple times a day? or something like that, totalling ~an hour) i’ll certainly give a heads up if i know i’ll be gone for longer than a day <3
6. time management skills :fire:
~
i’d like to consider my time management skills as improved. growing up has finally slapped me in the face and demanded i get it together if i want to do well in school, and i thank her for that (mostly). i still have my faults, like any sane person would,, however, when it comes to things with deadlines, i’ll always push myself to be on time - rarely later and rarely *too* early. this is partially due to my fear of asking for extensions :sob:
besides that, my skills include… multitasking? if that counts? i find that switching between multiple tasks keeps things interesting to me, so that it feels less plain and more “fun”. this proves to be useful sometimes as i’m able to tackle multiple things at once. another skill is my strong determination - i will do the thing (somehow) and make it look good, you’ll never see me dropping something i’ve agreed to. stemming from this, i take great care not to take on more than i can handle - the art trades back in the day have taught me better. finally, i’m capable of planning ahead in a go-with-the-flow sort of way - look, i know the two contradict each other but hear me out - i just know in my mind when to do what and how to space out work. i hate cramming big tasks into small periods, because it means i can’t fully dedicate myself to them. working a little at a time is arguably far better and succeeds in making me feel accomplished.
a neutral thing about me is my chaotic methods of organization - i’m completely useless when it comes to planners and lists, but it works out. i do like categorizing though, i can’t stand when things are jumbled up.
weaknesses! :jazz-hands: for starters, i’m bad at staying focused. if i’m not interested in a task, my brain simply refuses. restarting kinda works sometimes, just walking away and coming back later. alas, my motivation widely fluctuates, so i can never tell when i’m up to start working. another is that i get distracted easily and will start too many things at once, essentially the dark twin of multitasking. i’ve set a limit, which is usually two or three.
indefinite deadlines have also been proving to be an issue, lately - tasks with no due date often find themselves pushed to the bottom of the list, or written off even if they should be done. something that should’ve occurred to me earlier is that i can slap deadlines on them myself, but i’m not sure how much weight they’d hold.
7. working with others? (assets to a team)
~
as a mostly introverted person, working by myself is fun sometimes in the aspect that i’m able to control everything and can go at my desired pace. however, i’ve learned to love working with others just as equally, since being around others helps ground me to a task, and also exposes me to a variety of lovely ideas i’d never have come up with alone <3
when it comes to working with me either as a pair or in a team, i’d consider myself a fairly good communicator. if there’s an issue, i won’t hold off when it comes to mentioning it, for example regards to my activity or something as simple as bringing up a plothole. i’m usually not shy when it comes to pitching in ideas, as, in my eyes, it’s always worth a shot. this definitely goes the other way too, i love listening and will hear you out. i’ll always consider any ideas no matter how attached i am to my own, and i know when to admit i’m wrong. i’m also pretty good at building onto other ideas, and find that having a base jump-starts my creativity.
next, i do pretty well when it comes to keeping the team together, whether it’s making sure everyone’s included in the workload or making sure we’re all on the same step. i’m also more of the peaceful type in conflict, it’s hard to make me angry in real life and even harder online. i can form solutions rather quickly :)
unfortunately, i’m a bit of a people pleaser and overthink things sometimes - which could be nice, i guess, but usually not so much for me. i’m overly conscious of how i act around others, which gets exhausting fast. i find it hard to tell someone if i don’t like their idea, and i’m generally bad at giving detailed critiques. this is mostly a problem for me at school, but it does carry over to here on occasion. when planning things, i go over every possible outcome in my head just to be careful, but i don’t really know when it’s not necessary and consequentially end up stressed. i really am trying to work out these flaws, and push past my impossibly high standards for myself and my work - after all, i’d probably be able to get further without the extra self-weight :P
as for assets, i’m the sort of person you might consider artistic - i’d be delighted to design things like thumbnails and pfps for the cabin if wanted, i have a love for making things visually pleasing. i have access to canva, too :>
8. a quality in a leader (and, me)
~
there are a plethora of traits i could’ve chosen from to answer this question: responsibility, adaptability, and determination were a couple of very close calls. these three could indeed get you very far as a leader - alas, i couldn’t resist but go with dedication for a round two <3
so! i feel that being dedicated is really the basis for it all. imagine how far you’d get, if you weren’t even the least bit interested in what you’re doing? dedication is really a wide variety of things, an even blend of commitment and passion. for an swc leader, i see it as pouring a bit of yourself into your cabin and its environment, and having a focus. it means trying your best to be consistently active, and not giving up on your vision because it’s “too hard”.
i aspire to embody all of the traits of dedication as a leader. i’ll be truly passionate when it comes to swc and my cabin, as it’s something i genuinely enjoy. i’ll be hardworking when it comes to building a cabin that feels more like a mini world, and find a way to weave our team’s ideas into reality. lastly, i’ll be active and involved in my cabin’s community all through the session!
9. cabin atmosphere (in 200 characters or less)
~
i wish to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where everyone has fun. i hope for the cabin to be truly alive, encouraging friendships and friendly competition while also supporting personal goals! (199 characters hHAha)
10. the three-part problem?
~
a. checklist! i apply to the bottom two - this is solely a co leader application, and i would love to share something promotional. no binding promises on that though but it’s likely :)

b. (leadership responsibility unabilities?)
nope, i am certain that i will be able to fulfill the responsibilities listed in the faq. in the scenario that this happens to change, i’ll be sure to let my leader and/or a host know.

c. (in the case of inactive leadership)
if a fellow leader from my currently hypothetical cabin were to go inactive, i’d first wait a while. i’d give them something like 1-2 days before sending a gentle reminder, and then another one or two before raising concern to the hosts. of course, a notice would be appreciated, but i understand that sometimes emergencies rise, and that’s okay for a short time. if they really do show no signs of activity for an extended period, i’d follow the directions of a host. something like picking up where they left off and transferring ownership of the cabin would be expected as a general outcome, and i will do what i can to ensure that the rest of cabin planning or of the session will continue smoothly.
in the (hopefully very unlikely) case that i myself have to go inactive, my priority would be to leave a heads up (to leaders and hosts) so that everyone isn’t left completely hanging. if time allows, i would share and do anything needed and decide with my team who is able to pick up my responsibilities. if i’m not truly gone, my efforts would be towards offering help to the team and/or providing moral support!

Inky's Leader App (Text Version)

1. About Me
Hello, and welcome to my leader application! I’m Inky (she/her), a high schooler who resides in the PST timezone. Outside of writing, one of my greatest passions is reading. I adore anything fantasy; a few current favorite books of mine are Divine Rivals by Rebecca Ross, Legendborn by Tracy Deonn, Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson, and the Tyme series by Megan Morrison. I also enjoy mystery and historical fiction, and will happily recommend A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and Ruta Sepetys to anyone who asks.

Other interests of mine include music, crocheting, and learning to code. I play the clarinet in my school’s marching band, and it has easily been the best experience of my freshman year. These past few months haven’t exactly been easy for me, but band and the friends that I made there have made everything worth it. As for coding, I’m currently finishing up a class on HTML and JavaScript. It’s been stressful at times, but I’ve learned so much and have discovered a new interest in web design, which is (to me) a sort of fusion of art and computer science. Next year I’m planning to take a class that covers JavaScript in further depth, which is very exciting.

2. Participation and Experience
My first SWC session was two years ago, as a July 2022 Thriller camper. I have participated in every session since, for a total of six sessions. Additionally, I have co-led twice before: Thriller in March 2023 (shoutout to Zai and Moss!) and Hi-Fi in July 2023 (shoutout to Alia!). Both were extremely rewarding experiences, and I enjoyed the challenge of planning out storylines and creating a fun cabin atmosphere. I ended up participating as a camper for the next couple of sessions, so that I could focus more on school and other IRL obligations. This summer, however, I have a lighter schedule and would love to return to a leadership role once again.

Outside of SWC, I am a member of a school club that tutors elementary school students in Scratch coding. This has involved teaching lessons on basic programming skills and working with kids to troubleshoot individual issues. I’ve gained a lot of experience with helping younger children and being a leader figure for them. Additionally, I’m a part of my school robotics team’s business subgroup. Business is an umbrella category for everything that is non-technical, from grant-writing to organizing fundraisers to travel logistics. I’ve worked on a variety of tasks for the team and have learned a lot of valuable skills: networking, collaboration, time management, and commitment to long-term projects are just a few. Out of every experience in my life, robotics has perhaps taught me the most about how to be a leader and a member of a team.

As for my writing experience, I have been putting stories onto a page since I knew how. I have written during SWC sessions, in between them, and all throughout the years before I knew this community even existed. While I’ve never entered any real-life writing competitions, I have placed multiple times in the SWC writing comp. I’ve also been published in my school’s newspaper as a guest contributor.

3. Cabin Preferences
While I am open to leading any cabin, my top preference is by far Thriller. I was a Thrillerian during my first sessions as both a camper (July 2022) and a co-leader (March 2023), so the cabin means a great deal to me. My storyline concept, the Thriller Psychic Agency, features a small psychic business that helps ghosts sort out their unfinished business and move onto the afterlife. Campers will take on the role of new recruits who have been hired just in time to work on the agency’s biggest job yet – someone has intentionally been trapping spirits in the mortal world, and it’s up to them to find out who. Through collaborative tasks and writing challenges, the psychics will be able to communicate with the ghosts and unravel a conspiracy that could wreak havoc on the realm of the living. This storyline also is fairly flexible genre-wise and could easily work for Horror or Mystery as well (my second and third choices).

An alternative cabin concept I have is the Dream Woods. Based on the tale of The Twelve Dancing Princesses, this storyline is set in a dreamlike forest that is as beautiful as it is dangerous. Campers will have to work together to escape the curse that is trapping them there. The Dream Woods is best suited for Fairy Tales or Folklore, but it could be adapted to fit Fantasy as well. Those three cabins are my fourth, fifth, and sixth choices, respectively.

I am also open to (co)-leading TCTWNW. Above all, I want to create a cabin that is fun and low-stress; whether or not competition is involved will not affect my goals.

4. Writing Excerpt
(from my November 2023 writing competition entry)

It should not have surprised you when one evening you closed your eyes, and the star gate was not there.
You stared at the space where the door to the sky normally stood, disbelieving. Every night, without fail, the star gate had always appeared for you, glowing gently in the space behind your sealed eyelids.
Now you stood alone, plunged into complete darkness. It was as if the world had folded inside out and shaken all the light from its skin, leaving nothing but an infinite, impossible emptiness.
Dread seized your chest. You opened your eyes, sent a silent plea to the stars, and closed them again.
Nothing.
Panicked tears rose up against your eyelids. You spun in circles, cried out in desperation, pounded on the space where the familiar golden doors had once stood.
The gate refused to materialize.
“I’m sorry,” you whispered at last, though there was no one to hear your apologies. A sob shuddered in your throat.
I didn’t mean to abandon you.

5. Time Dedication
My summer really isn’t that busy! I won’t be able to work much on early cabin planning in the last few days of May, as I have finals and end-of-year school projects. Once vacation starts in June, I should be more or less free every day. I’m planning to participate in a volunteer program at my local library, and there are a couple of marching band workshops scattered throughout the summer, but neither of those should take more than a few hours per week. With all those activities in mind, I expect to be able to dedicate at least 3 hours to SWC a day.

6. Time Management
Procrastination is something that I have struggled with since I first applied for co-leader in March 2023, over a year ago. Since then, I like to believe I have developed a better work ethic and self-motivation skills. One thing I have learned about myself is that I can be quite productive as long as I avoid distractions. If I sit down immediately after school and start homework, I can knock out all my assignments in a reasonable amount of time. If I open up YouTube, even if “just for a quick break”, nothing will get done until much later in the evening. These sorts of distractions have cost me countless hours of time and productivity. The ability to stay focused is undoubtedly something that I need to work on.

On a more positive note, I think I have come a long way from last March, especially in terms of my time management abilities. Organization is one of my greatest strengths. I am capable of visualizing exactly how much time I have to complete certain tasks, roughly how long each one will take me, and how best I should maximize my time to cross off every item on my to-do lists. When I can avoid distractions and see my mental schedules through, I am actually quite efficient and productive.

7. Strengths, Weaknesses, and Assets
When working on a team, I consider myself to be a reliable member who can be trusted to complete their share of a task. I operate well on deadlines, ensure that my work is up to everyone else’s standards, and am usually willing to help out others if the need arises. I also excel at organizing logistics, and have a strong understanding of how to delegate/keep track of different assignments across a group.

An area I struggle in is communication. I am a very work-oriented person, meaning that I focus more on the tasks at hand and than on my fellow collaborators. Genuine camaraderie within a group is nearly as important as productivity; people who like one another will naturally work better together. However, my social skills are often lacking (especially across a screen), and I find it difficult to create the kind of dynamic that is ideal among cabin leaders. I know how to communicate friendly politeness, but talking to people and forging a stronger relationship with them is a challenge.

Some assets that I can bring to my cabin’s leading team include my organizational skills, my creativity, my past experience, and my art abilities. As I mentioned before, I am very good at managing logistics, both for myself and a larger group. As a leader, I would keep track of tasks/deadlines for the entire team and evenly delegate work amongst each member. Additionally, I have a strong understanding of how to run a successful cabin from experience in past SWC sessions. I know different ways to encourage cabin bonding (collaborative challenges, daily icebreaker questions, etc.) and how to create an engaging storyline (one that is interesting but not overly complicated, and also flexible).

Speaking of storylines, I can also lend my creativity as a storyteller to cabin planning. Building unique plot concepts is one of my favorite parts of writing. This session, I want to use that passion to develop a cabin storyline that campers will find both fun and memorable. I have so many ideas, and I would love to work with a full leadership team to flesh them out.

A final asset I have to offer is my basic drawing/design skills (as demonstrated in this application). These abilities could be very useful for creating camper prizes, cabin aesthetics, and promotional materials.

8. Leadership Values
I greatly value responsibility in a leader. In my eyes, a good leader is someone who understands what is expected of them and pours their full effort into meeting those expectations. They can be trusted to uphold all the requirements of their position, be that completing necessary work, assisting others, or seeing a project to its conclusion. SWC is something that I am really passionate about, and I would never allow it to fail by neglecting my leadership duties. As a leader, I would assume full, unwavering responsibility for my cabin. My fellow leaders would be able to rely on me to help organize/complete our shared work, and my campers would be able to rely on me for support. My goal is to contribute to a session that is engaging and memorable for everyone involved. I am willing to dedicate however much effort is required to make that happen.

9. Cabin Atmosphere
A low-stress, supportive environment with an engaging storyline and a strong sense of cabin community. (102 characters)

10. Affirmations
a.)
I am applying for both leader and co-leader (yes)
I am applying only for co-leader (no)
I’m willing to share a promotional project for SWC (yes)
b.)
I can complete all of the leadership responsibilities listed in the FAQ.
c.)
In the case of inactive leadership, I will first notify the hosts to let them know what has happened. If a fellow leader goes inactive, I will do my best to step up and fill in their responsibilities, while also choosing a replacement co to help manage the extra work. If I go inactive, I will ensure that my fellow leaders are aware and well-equipped enough to continue cabin planning/leadership without me. I will delegate my former responsibilities among them, and share any materials that might be useful for running the cabin.

IN PROGRESS
Jackie's SWC leader app
What is Girlguiding?
Girlguiding (also known as girl scouts) is the female equivalent of scouts and was started in 1909 when Scouts refused to allow girls to join. Girlguiding has five sections: Rainbows, Brownies, Guides, Rangers and Senior selection. I have been doing Girlguiding for as long as I can remember so it has become a big part of my life and taught me many valuable skills. For my SWC leader application I have decided to theme it around the different badges you can earn as a guide. Enjoy!

About me
My name is Jackie, I use she/they pronouns and my time zone is BST.I love writing short stories and reading dystopian and mystery books. I am currently reading Escape which is the second book of the Territory trilogy. However, I think my writing is also influenced by books like The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna. In my free time, I sometimes play guitar - but not very well! I also do a few clubs during my spare time including Girlguiding, cricket and community theatre. At my community theatre we recently did a variety show and I sang a solo of “Swing low, sweet chariot”. I really enjoyed this and it helped me build my confidence.

Have you previously participated in SWC?
I have previously participated in SWC on a different account but I have never been a leader. In July 2021, I first started participating in SWC and I was in Adventure. However, due to things returning to normal after the pandemic, I took a break from scratch to focus on school. When I returned in July of last year I was a camper in Script Circus. My most recent session of SWC was in November when I was in illustrated fiction.
I have also participated in a number of other scratch camps.

I have also been in a number of scratch camps other than SWC. My favourite out of these has to be SRC. It really inspired me to try new genres of books and to make reading a habit again.

Outside of scratch, I am my patrol leader at Girlguiding, which entails organising activities and helping new members of the group feel welcome. In addition, I am my class captain at school which means I have had to lead class assemblies and voice the views of my class. I also have writing experience as I used to go to the creative writing club at school and I sometimes submit stories to school competitions.

Which cabins would you prefer to lead?
My first preference for cabins is script. For this I am planning it to be themed around a group of actors working at The Globe Theatre during Shakespeare's time. The rewards system will be lines and campers would have to “memorise lines” in time for opening night by completing tasks. There would also be mini storyline events where campers have to collaborate and write something to fix a problem in the Globe.

Another idea I have for a cabin is for Myth. In Myth the storyline will follow campers around the labyrinth. When campers reach a certain word goal, we will vote for which direction we should go next in the labyrinth and then there will be a task that campers must complete to face the danger in the labyrinth. At the end of camp campers will face the minotaur and have to collaborate to write a story.

The my top three cabin preferences - in order of favourite to least - are Myth, script or steampunk. However, I would prefer not to led the cabin that will not win as I find the competition aspect of SWC motivates me to write more. I would also prefer not to lead non-fiction or real-fi because I am not very experienced in these genres.

5. Plans and activity

At the end of July I am going on holiday. However, I will make time to update the word count and complete any dailies. I do not remember the exact dates for this but I can give them if needed. Other than my holiday, I should have plenty of time to keep up to date with SWC.

6. Time Management
Currently I have to admit that I am a bit of a procrastinator. I tend to put off tasks until the last minute and I get distracted easily. However, I do have ways to improve. The first way I make sure work is done is by setting mini deadlines and reminders on my phone to create a sense of urgency. To stop myself getting distracted, I have space in my room that I associate with writing.

7. Working with others
Working with others is something that is more daunting than working on my own but I often find that I enjoy being in a team a lot more due getting to hear a wide variety of different opinions and you often see the best side of people when working in a team.

One of my strengths in a team is that I speak my mind and I share my ideas with others. In a group, I am usually the one who is able to organise the group. In the past this has involved making sure everyone has a part to play or deciding the best times to work on the project.

At the moment, I’d say my greatest weakness when working in a team is decision making because it can take me a while to decide on an idea. However, I will not let this impact camp as I can always consult either a (co)leader or the campers help me decide.

8. Trait
I struggled to pick one trait for this question. I was torn between creativity or compassion. Eventually I chose creativity because it can mean so many different things.

A creative leader will be able to think outside the box to find innovative solutions

9. Atmosphere?
I am aiming for the cabin to have a welcoming atmosphere where campers feel comfortable to be themselves and get to know others. This cabin will be focused on fun. This will involve competitions and fun mini activities!

i love books (and writing them! i‘m biased towards poems, however-) i love songs, and i love how words can make such a big impact on a person. thank you <3

ok- your about me is so inspiring. i loved how much you explained about yourself and all the things you talked about. however, i would talk a little bit about writing, as this is a writing camp. how does music/books impact your writing? does it make it better? longer? sadder?

Coco_animator wrote:

one of my cabin ideas describes a shimmering palace on a mysterious land. it contains blue orbs which hold the vast answers of the future. however, one day, a rebel group attacks: and the palace is destroyed. all the prophecies are shattered and are lost to the world. in this, the campers would work together to uncover the shards of glass to piece together The Great Prophecy, using vague clues. they will learn how to work as a team this will encourage collaboration, boost their thinking skills, and overall bring a fun aura to the cabin!

this is such a cool idea, however i would love to see your imagination explain a little bit more about the prophecies. if that's all you have figured out, that's totally fine! if not, i would suggest adding how campers can uncover shards and how that will be used in your cabin

Coco_animator wrote:

time management is actually one skill i have under my control: after being a scriptwriter and director for my class assembly in 2023, and its topic being time management, i have learnt a lot of tips and hacks for it! // however, one fault i have in this is i tend to put things off a lot: i tell myself that i will do it tomorrow, but it ends up being forgotten or being done at the very last moment <3 i realised it recently, however, and i have been working towards spreading tasks evenly between days and not putting them off!

these two statements kind of contradict each other. even though they both aren't exactly centered around time management, you can't really manage anything on time if you can't get it done first. i struggle with this problem as well so i totally feel you :')

wow!! that was an amazing application and there wasn't much i could say about it :0 best of luck!!

vi's co-leader application
about me

Hello there! My name is Vi (she.her), a classic-literature obsessed teen who lives in the wonderful realm of EST (although it is EDT right now). I have been writing since I could hold a pencil, but I became a much more avid writer in October of 2022. I write both short stories and poetry, and am currently working on expanding to longer pieces. Aside from writing, I love reading (as any other SWCer tends to) and read books from Rick Riordan to Jane Austen. My other hobbies include running, photography (a new addition to the list), and journaling. There is nothing like writing in a notebook with an elegant fountain pen and pretending you are in a historical-era! Apparently, well according to the SWC community, I am rather humorous, which is quite contrasting to the rather sad and depressing stories I write. Overall, writing and storytelling really weaves its ways into my hobbies, and it is why I love SWC so much!
experience

This July will be my fifth session of SWC. Although I have not participated in other Scratch camps, I have participated in my church's Vacation Bible school where I led my first group of kids last June. When I was in fifth grade (a while ago but still relevant) I was a safety patrol supervising all ages of kids and ended up being voted Patrol of the Year. Lastly, I have been running a small writing group with my brother and in-real-life best friend since late 2022. For that I plan, write and distribute invitations; manage contact with everyone (my bestie is long distance); and plan any extra things for each writing session.

SWC Sessions (a camper each time)
March 2023- Folklore
July 2023- Historical Fiction
November 2023- Literary Fiction
March 2024- Poetry

cabin preferences

I would not mind coleading any cabin although I have a slight inclination towards Poetry, Historical Fiction, or Dystopian. If any returned, Lit-Fi, Bi-Fi, or Contemporary are right up my alley. As for TCTWNW, it is a wonderful cabin but not something I would be interested in coleading in for the July 2024 session. I would rather lead a cabin with slight competition that still keeps a general, chill atmosphere.
writing excerpt

From “EMILY” a piece awarded honorable mention in the March 2024 session of SWC:

The fluorescent lights were a blinding white, but John didn’t seem to notice. He was pacing the hospital room in a daze. Emily was lying on the bed, frail and weak, with almost no color left.

It was a year ago that John had driven Emily to the hospital where the doctors told her she had cancer. It was a year ago that John had learned Emily would leave him. And it was a year later that Emily was back in the hospital. John didn’t know when they would be going home, but it seemed like he wouldn’t stop pacing until they did.

“John,” Emily whispered. Her voice pulled John from his trance and he stopped pacing to look at her. “I love you,” she said.

“Oh, Emily,” he walked over to her and took her hand. “I love you too…”

“I’m going back to sleep now, but I’ll be okay. I’ll see you soon.” And when she closed her eyes there was a gentle smile on her face.
dedication + skills

Throughout July, I will be able to dedicate an hour or two a day. Weekends might be more or less, depending on when my brother has baseball tournaments. While my activity levels will be much increased during the session, the time prior is a little uncertain. I am on vacation the first two weeks in June, but I should be able to set aside time for SWC. The rest of June I will be on another vacation, but that one will be more chill, and again, I can set aside time for SWC. Of course, should anything pop up, I would make sure to notify my leader and the other co-leader.

While there are shortcomings to my leading skills, such as easily getting overwhelmed and frustrated and a lack of confidence, it is something I have been working on. I do like being in control, but SWC is one of those places where I am most willing to listen. Some of my strengths include organization, efficiency, time management, and a supportive and collaborative teammate and cabin member.

The thing I admire most in a leader is organization. When something is organized, everything functions more easily, and everyone involved is not as stressed. As someone who thrives on a system, I will happily keep my cabin organized, doing whatever my leader requires of me.
checkboxes + if i go inactive

(X) I am applying for both leader and co-leader.
(✔) I am applying only for co-leader.
(✔) I am willing to share a promotional project for SWC.

If I have to go inactive, I will let both my leader, other co-leader(s), and a host (if necessary) know that I have to go inactive. I will let the campers know as well and maybe suggest them to let the leaders know of their total word count instead of the leaders having to constantly total it. If one of the other leaders goes inactive, I will do the same thing if they left without any warning.

mint's (co)leader app
1094 words
about me
hello! i'm mint (she/her), a mango-loving, cat-obsessed, sleep deprived bookworm! i live in the majestic lands of cst/cdt. tea, mangos, samosas, rice, shrimp, and sour cream chips are all things i think are scrumptious and fairly delectable. nerds, smarties, and kitkats would be my top choice for candy as someone with a sweet tooth. i like spicy food too, even with the scoville tolerance of a potato. you can usually find me browsing on scratch, playing random games, drawing or doodling cats, reading warrior cats, writing on microsoft word, or eating mangos. my favorite books and authors are warrior cats, wings of fire, the westing game, the erin hunters, tui t. sutherland, et cetera. a few hobbies of mine include reading, writing, coding (learning python!), making art, gaming, and sleeping. i've participated in two swc sessions, both being campers with the wonderful mystery mansion and script theater. my favorite genres to write in are fantasy, mystery, science fiction, and adventure.
experience, leadership, and participation
i've participated in swc twice in the november 2023 mystery mansion and the march 2024 script theater, both being a camper. at school, i'm in student council as my class's representative with my friend. i've participated in many clubs, and started an unofficial book club. i've written many stories, and i'm working on one inspired by wings of fire right now.
cabin preferences
all cabins are unique and amazing in their own way, and i'd be delighted to lead any one of them with their diverse ideas and aesthetics. a few cabins are some that i'd love to lead even more than others. i love tctwnw, and i would like to support relaxed writing, but i would also like to look at a competitive aspect. i wouldn't prefer to lead tctwnw. though cabins that i would like to lead include fantasy for its fantastic storylines, mystery for its enigmatic and murderous (hehe) atmosphere , adventure for its fast and exciting pace, poetry for its calming but competitive view, fairy tales for its classic pretty renaissance-like storyline, and science fiction for its representation of tech and futuristic storylines. i would still like to lead mystery the most as a lover of murder mysteries. gurtle, mr. skog, and blåhaj might have a few storylines to answer to…
writing excerpt (from a wip novel)
The sand-colored dragon stood before Finheart, glaring bitterly. It was considered disrespectful to carelessly walk borders, but she still stood defiantly.
One year ago (which seemed like a week to Finheart) Coralwave, Finheart’s sister, had gone missing. No one knew what happened to her. When Algaecatcher, the queen of the RiverWings, asked the ThornWings, they refused to answer. Finheart believed they had held her hostage. All that was left of her traces was a silver necklace on her pillow, next to a note that was never started.
“What’s your business?” he asked, stabbing his polished sword into the ground.
“I’m here to find your queen, and my sister.” Finheart said. She took out her sword from her bag weaved by Coralwave and unsheathed it, setting it into the rough sand. She’d find her, one way or another.
time dedication and plans
i'd be able to dedicate at least 30 minutes for an average day, while more for events such as cabin wars. i'll be gone for july 1st, as i'll come back from a vacation on that day completely jet-lagged, so i'd leave a note and make sure to alert the leading team beforehand. overall, i'd be available for the majority of july and am willing to dedicate my time to my leading team and cabin.
skills and shortcomings in time management
starting with my skills, i'm slightly organized, so plans come in handy in special or fast-paced events. it would be a good asset to bring to a leading team, just in case we need to remember anything for a certain event. the majority of the time, i'm very active and can help my cabin with our tedious works, but still care about my life. onto my shortcomings, i procrastinate a lot and forget deadlines, but to overcome it i'll set reminders and to-do lists throughout the session. i sometimes forget to do things and set to rush it, but i can stop this by just doing it (and setting reminders). #justdoit
strengths and weaknesses in working with others and assets to bring to a leading team (gosh what a long title)
starting with my strengths, i'm very flexible with agreements and go with the flow, even when things go wrong. when i work with others, i can agree to shift work evenly and distribute the effort between others. onto my shortcomings, which actually connects to my strength, i don't make many decisions and leave it to others. my opinions usually come from others, and i wait to make my say. i can overcome this with decisions only to be made by me, and then checking with others to see what they think. i can compromise with others to have equal effort. i can bring organization and contribution to the table, as i'm very active and can make plans or generally keep things together, even in situations such as leading team absences or fast-paced events that might go by too fast to record anything such as cabin wars.
leading quality i value most and ways to embrace it
i value communication skills the most. it's really important to be able to talk with others in a concise way, as communication barriers can easily induce conflict inside the cabin. being able to contact your leading team and interacting with questions or problem solving can help improve campers' experience during the session and give a friendly atmosphere. if anyone was inactive without any warning (which is okay in urgent situations) might build up on word-counting. this will make going on your writing journey much more tedious for campers. a leader with good communication skills can interact with campers, alert the leading team of any inactivity, and plainly be helpful and don't leave your cabin in the dust.
cabin atmosphere (165 characters)
“our cabin aims for a place where you can be competitive but also stay calm and still write peacefully. whether you prefer to rest or race, we'll support our campers!”
questions
a. ✔️i'm applying for both co-leader and leader X i'm applying for only co-leader ✔️ i'm willing to share a promotional project for swc
b. no!
c. if any member of our leading team, including myself, is inactive, we can set up a system where if one is inactive, we can all contribute and distribute their part while they're gone. for example, we can add words or currency just like cabin points from dailies or weeklies, except we can have shifts on certain days for whenever we're free. we can also have partner word group so one can take over if another can't.
that's it for my app! have a nice day, and good luck to everyone! <3

swc megathread ➷ march 2024

the doctor — a co app

first doctor — about me

I’m called Soki online, and I prefer she/they pronouns but don’t mind too much. I’m a seventeen-year-old Canadian homeschooler living on a farm in EST/EDT. Writing has been a huge part of my life for more than ten years, and I’ve been an SWC-er for three.
When I’m not studying or writing, I’m probably reading, watching, or otherwise obsessing over some science fiction fandom (currently that fandom is Doctor Who, as I’m sure you can tell) or listening to classic rock. I also love creating art, but sadly have not had much time for that recently.
I’m very interested in psychology and other social sciences and hope to eventually become a psychiatrist as well as publish my writing.

second doctor — previous participation

This session will be my tenth consecutive session participating in SWC! I’m quite excited for this milestone. Out of the nine sessions I’ve been in so far, I’ve been leader for seven, co-leader for one, and camper for one. I’ve been on the memory book committee and daily team each twice, I’ve written two full-length workshops and one mini workshop, and I’ve been a writing competition panelist once.
The details of my SWC participation are as follows:
Camper, Real-Fi July 2021
Leader, workshop writer, Thriller November 2021
Leader, MBC member, Sci-Fi March 2022
Leader, Adventure July 2022
Leader, workshop writer, Bi-Fi November 2022
Co-leader, Daily Team member, MBC member, Fantasy March 2023
Leader, Script July 2023
Leader, Daily Team member, mini-workshop writer, Folklore November 2023
Leader, Writing Competition panelist, Fan-Fi March 2024

third doctor — experience in leadership and writing

I’ve a lot of experience in both leadership positions and writing, on Scratch and offline.
I’ve participated in a vast array of other Scratch camps, and have had leadership roles in several of them. I’ve been a manager or host of multiple featured studios, and moderated a handful of roleplays as well.
Offline, I’ve been a volunteer at an outdoor program for young children, I’ve had a shadowing position at my local youth centre and been a member of its fundraising committee, I’ve been in various leadership roles over six different 4-H clubs since 2019, and from 2018 to 2020 I helped a friend run a theatre club for homeschoolers.
I’ve always struggled with confidence when it comes to having positions of authority, but thanks to a leadership program I took this spring I now have a lot more faith in my abilities as a leader.
As for writing, it’s not much of an exaggeration for me to say I’ve been writing forever. I’d already written several short stories by the time I was five, and since I was eleven I’ve been dedicated to pursuing writing and have written at least a bit every day.
I currently have an internship at a local newspaper, which means I now have professional writing experience which I’m very excited about I’m pretty sure that no matter how my life goes, writing will be a large part of it in some way or another.

fourth doctor — cabin preferences

I don’t have any particular cabins I’d like to be in this session, though it is unlikely I’ll accept an offer to co-lead a cabin I’ve already been in unless the leader’s concept for it is especially interesting to me. Additionally, I would love to co-lead Horror or Poetry but I’m not set on either nor do I have any refined plot ideas for them, and I am partial to fandom-based cabins. Otherwise, I’m good with whatever.

fifth doctor — excerpt

Odin hadn’t been expecting to receive a head in the mail. But he could handle it. Now, surely anyone else would have been angry, to discover in such a way that their uncle had been murdered. But Odin, obviously, was not an ordinary man.
“Oh, Mimir,” he muttered. He carefully removed the head from its package and placed it upon a nearby table. Then he set about gathering his herbs. The blend needed to be just right to prevent Mimir’s head from rotting and prepare it for the incantations Odin was about to perform.
Now, surely anyone else would be rather squeamish at the thought of rubbing poultices on the disembodied head of their uncle. But Odin, as we have already established, was not an ordinary man.
Now the head was ready. Luckily, Odin was very wise thanks to Mimir, and he was a master of incantation. It was not a challenge for Odin to bring life back into the head and allow Mimir to speak once more.
“Oh, my friend,” murmured Odin, carefully holding the head in his arms. “It’s time for you to come back.”
Mimir’s eyes opened. “Hello!” The head said cheerfully, in a manner not at all like the Mimir Odin was used to.
Odin was rather taken aback.
“Odin,” said Mimir, “I’m afraid I’ve been rather dishonest with you. My name is not actually Mimir. I am not the man you think you know.”
“Who are you, then?”
“Well… I’m the Doctor. And I’d best be going now. Please set me gently on the floor.”
Odin did what he was told, placing the head on the ground in front of him.
Then, in a blinding flash of light, the head disappeared and in its place was an entirely new person.
“Right then,” the new man said, “I’ll be heading off. Need to get some rest. See you!”
And with that he gave a little wave and left the room.
Despite what the man had said, Odin never saw him again.

sixth doctor — time dedication

My time dedication is pretty up in the air this session. I’m applying for a summer job that’ll have me working 35 hours a week from June to August, if I’m accepted. In that case I’ll probably only have an hour a day to dedicate to SWC. If I’m not accepted, I’ll have pretty much unlimited time and be able to be very flexible about when and how much I come online. I’m confident that either way I’ll be able to meet the responsibilities of a co-leader, but if I get accepted for this job, I probably won’t be able to participate all that much in the activities side of things.

seventh doctor — plans

As I mentioned in the previous section, I currently don’t have my plans for July set in stone, and unfortunately I probably won’t until the application period for this session is over. There’s a chance I will be very busy, and a chance I will be pretty much not busy at all. However, SWC is very important to me and I plan to make it a priority no matter what else I have going on this session. Sadly I cannot give much detail in my answer to this question, but I can guess that most of my online activity will be during the evening (EDT).

eighth doctor — time management

Time management is a skill of mine. Aside from brief phases where I procrastinate a little too much, I’m good at making the most of time and working under time constraints.
The main skill I have with time management is my ability to effectively use schedules. I’m good at making reliable plans and modifying them if necessary, keeping track of tasks, and making sure everything gets completed in a timely fashion. I work best with a plan, and i often have several potential plans and backups, so it’s rare for me to approach something in a haphazard or unorganized way or for a problem to arise that I haven’t accounted for.
My biggest weakness as far as time management is my tendency to get so caught up in something, so focused on making it perfect as quickly as possible that I accidentally overwork myself in the process. I have found ways of managing this tendency and this issue doesn’t come up as often anymore.

ninth doctor — working with others

I used to be terrible at collaborating. The combination in my younger self of low self-esteem and perfectionism made me at once bossy and overly sensitive.
I have since made significant improvements and I am confident i’m my ability to collaborate well.
My main collaboration strengths are patience and flexibility, and reliability and knowing my limits. I am good at adapting ideas to better suit the circumstances or people they are connected to, and I am good at working with others to find compromises that suit everyone. I am able to gauge how much I can handle and not take on too little or too much, and I rarely ever fail to complete something I’ve committed to.
As for weaknesses, sometimes my old enemies of perfectionism and low self-esteem decide to crop up again, but overall I am a capable collaborator and I’m confident in my ability to work effectively with my team to overcome any barriers we encounter.

tenth doctor — assets

organization and time management — I am good at organizing and managing things with lots of moving parts, complicated projects, teams of people, schedules and deadlines, etc
creativity and flexibility — I’m good at adapting ideas and finding last-minute solutions. I don’t do well when plans have to change, but I’m good at modifying and improving plans if the original idea doesn’t work properly.
problem-solving skills — I am able to approach an issue form multiple perspectives and think logically about solutions. I can create good contingency plans and find multiple potential ways of solving problems.
art and graphic design skills — There are others more skilled in this area than I, but I’m experienced enough in art that I can make some pretty cool cabin graphics if that ends up being my responsibility
experience — I’ve been on the SWC leader team for eight sessions, been in various Scratch camps consistently for the past three years, and I’ve been active on Scratch for a decade (which is crazy woah :0)

eleventh doctor — leadership quality

There are a lot of important traits for a leader to have, but the one I’ve chosen to focus on this session is commitment. It is imperative that a leader be committed to leading and whatever tasks may come along with it, and regardless of what else they have going on, they much make their leadership a priority. This will help the whole operation run smoothly, encourage commitment from those under the leadership as well, and make it more likely for any problems that arise to be overcome. SWC is very important to me and I’ll do my absolute best to reflect that in my leadership.

twelfth doctor — atmosphere

Calm and more focused on self-improvement rather than competition. An encouraging space where campers can make friends and work on personal projects.

thirteenth doctor — checkboxes

I am applying only for co-leader.
In theory I’m willing to share a promotional project. In reality I doubt I’ll have time.

fourteenth doctor — leadership responsibilities

I am confident that I am able to fulfill all the responsibilities of a co-leader, barring unforeseen circumstances (such as forums being down) that may create challenges. If any such challenges arrive, I am also confident I'm able to manage hem and find other solutions.

fifteenth doctor — inactive leadership

If someone in my cabin's leadership has to step down or goes inactive, I'll do everything in my power to keep the cabin running smoothly. This might look like helping find a new (co)leader and assisting them in getting used to the cabin, taking on responsibilities of the inactive party and/or helping split those responsibilities between the remaining (co)leaders. If I'm the one who has to go inactive, I'll try my best to stay around and help with the transition as much as possible. Usually I say that I can't foresee anything that might make me need to leave SWC, but unfortunately that is a possibility this session. I'll do my best to stay on if at all possible, but there is a slim chance it won't be possible.
