It's where you can reply to someone without the person commenting. XD Also, the only way to know @mike.marc existed. LOL! (User ID 201) Technically, you can still send the notification with the new API, but you can't see that it's a ping. XD

luckily it'll work on user pages until that switches to www as well

It probably wouldn't be particularly hard to get it known amongst ATers, but having lots of Scratchers actively use it would be pretty challenging, not to mention the moderation that you'd need.
