I… don't think this thread is going to end up anywhere good, I'll report to be closed, and hope the ST do, but I doubt it will be.

For one thing, there's hardly a difference in media between “normal” people and autistic people.
There's not much character difference.
The stories they tell of their life and struggles are good, that could be threadworthy, but a lot of the time when I see mainstream coverage of “autism” it's very contrary to anything that I've experienced in reality and that anyone else openly autistic says.

This thread is meant to be for people with autism to talk about autistic role-models and books with autistic protaganists

I WANT THEM TO BE EQUAL - Autistic character treated like everyone else in show, not patronised by the others
NOT BE A COMIC RELIEF CHARACTER - Autistic traits are NOT easy comedy. They are serious things people have to deal with every day, especially autistic people.
NOT HAVE THEIR OWN ‘SPECIAL LITTLE SNOWFLAKE STORY’ - People call shows about ‘normal’ kids things like ‘The Super Bunch!’ or ‘The Epic Adventures Of Johnny And Jimmy!’ yes, those names are a Tones and I reference, I wish the Johnny and Jimmy mentioned in Johnny Run Away had their own animated TV show, though, whereas they would call something about an autistic kid ‘What Makes Lily Different’ or ‘Mia’s Story'. See the difference!
RAAAAAAAAAAAAH - A reference to Aggretsuko's rages

Well I meet the first requirement

Anyone, on topic, I think “The Good Doctor” is a very nice portrayal, although I haven't watched beyond the first episode. It's an amazing show, and I can relate to way too much of it in the first episode alone

for me, a lot of the media that is actually ABOUT autism is kinda ehhhh. it's always written from an outsider's perspective and rarely manages to capture what having autism is actually like. so for me my favorite autistic media just happens to capture those feelings without actually being about autism up and front. liz and the blue bird would be one of these movies for me

Well, the difference is usually being some that's a savant, and I feel that's what the forum was made for. I'm certain many actors and actresses and directors and whoever the heck else are on the spectrum

Now, I am an autist (is that what it'd be called), and I personally haven't found anything that would relate to my non-savant form of it.

I disagree with one aspect of that in the sense that autistic people (myself included) can be very blunt and it can lead to some absolutely hilarious results and be used as a unique comic relief opportunity

Just a baseball nerd with an absurdist sense of humor.

Yep, especially how they make it seen like autism is something that makes people incapable of function entirely. Some might, the majority don't.

Dr Temperance Brennan from Bones (TV show) is probably the best representation of an Autistic character, but she's never openly called Autistic in the show, or identified as. She's one of the main characters, one of the most important characters, she struggles with understanding emotions and social queues. She is extremely science-focused, can't tell sarcasm from sincerity.

She has very distant attitudes towards love.

It's never used as a characteristic to degrade her, but obviously when she misses a joke, her friends around her sigh a little and move or, or her misunderstanding makes something so much more comedic.
It's the perfect representation, but it's never explicitly stated.
