Scratch closing down?
I heard some people saying that Scratch and the internet might close down, due to something in the EU… Could someone please explain if that's true, and tell me what exactly is happening?

Scratch closing down?
I think that's probably about Scratch transitioning to Scratch 3.0, but I've heard that there's some copyright thing that might close down Scratch even before 2020 I heard that Scratch could close in 2020, dunno why

You might be referring to Artcle 13.
From what I hear, it doesn't seem like it will be a problem. However, I am not knowledgeable on the topic. It would probably be worth doing research on, and that research would have to be done outside of Scratch.

Also, Adobe flash (I think that's what it's called) will be closing down in 2020, which is the reason Scratch is updating to 3.0, if that's what you're thinking about.

I actually was wondering the same thing… I saw on Scratch Team member Paddle2See's profile, someone asked and he said “I don't know at this point. We are still learning what it's all about.”

I don't think Scratch would have to close. If I understand it correctly, we wouldn't be able to create projects or studios (I think it would include studios) that include something that is copyrighted by its owner. So no more Nintendo, Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Xbox, Harry Potter, etc, etc… projects.
This project explains it well.

Wait, really? What does the European Union have to do with this? Is it Brexit? I heard some people saying that Scratch and the internet might close down, due to something in the EU… Could someone please explain if that's true, and tell me what exactly is happening?
Edit: Why couldn't they just ban copyrighted things?

Honestly, I'm not really concerned. I wouldn't worry about it - at this point, companies already can copyright strike Scratch projects, and they do get removed without much warning as to not start an argument. It sounds like it'd be the same as we currently have, with more strict Fair Use rules.

Actually, I think Article 13 would stop you from using anything that is copyrighted, unless you have permission from the owner…I
(I honestly just heard of Article 13, so this is all news to me…)

I don't think article 13 would cause scratch to shut entirely, but it would definitely give the site a lot of issues in regards with copyright and would make what users can create a lot more limited as a result. That or all projects would have to be filtered in the EU, meaning that EU users wouldn't be able to see a large portion of the site.
