there's no leveling at all. It's just a throwback I think. The enemies will indeed get harder, but your items will get slightly better and if you manage the turn based combat well and learn the attacks you can get through everything but Jevil. Jevil's the guy that will introduce you to the game over screen, no-one else. You'll get plenty of items to use throughout the game. Also, the Manual can be used to make most things tired.
