Scratch Information Hub

Hello and welcome to an unofficial Scratch Information Hub assembled by Scratchers and for Scratchers. We were initially a Scratch Dictionary, but we have expanded to numerous departments for further explanation.

Scratch Dictionary - A quick list of terms and it's definitions. Great to start with.
Further Explained - Terms explained in the dictionary section are further explained here.
Tips & Advice - After reading the other sections, you should consider checking out some advice here.

Thanks for reading this Scratch Dictionary. If you have additional suggestions or feedback, please let me know below. All items are not final and are subject to change/addition.

Hello and welcome to an unofficial take on a Scratch-themed dictionary, named the Scratch Dictionary. Information is arranged alphabetically, and feel free to correct/add more to the list below!

There is also an additional section that further explains concepts in detail for those who do not initially understand.

Scratch Dictionary

AMV - Animated Music Video, an animation that uses (typically) existing music but Scratchers add their own specialty to it.
Alert - When a Scratcher is successfully reported, the Scratch Team alerts them through their messages. Don't worry, this does not mean you're banned, but if you repeat to ignore these alerts, you will be banned eventually.
Appeal - An action a Scratcher may do to end a ban.
Ban - When a Scratcher repeatedly fails to comply to the Community Guidelines, they will be punished by not being able to access the website, unless they appeal.
BBCode - The type of formatting that the Scratch Forums support. Read more below, in Note 1.
Bump - When a forum is nearly reaching inactivity, you may post to bring it back up. If it is older than a month, please do not do so as it is considered necroposting. Also please do not do so twice a day or more, as it could be considered spam.
CC - Coloring Contest, where a Scratcher creates a project in which other Scratchers may remix and color out.
Community Guidelines - A wonderful list of rules for the Scratch Community. Failure to comply to these rules will result in a warning (Alert through your Messages), and eventually a ban.
Curator - A) A studio curator, a person that may add projects and remove themself/their own projects. B) A front page curator (FPC), a person that may choose projects to promote for a limited time.
Emoji - It could be in the form of text ( owo ) or by this: Learn more on the Scratch Wiki.
Messages - A tab in which you are notified about actions such as comments, love/fave-its, remixes, and activity in studios/forums that you follow/own/curate.
My Stuff - A tab in which you could see your projects and studios and delete them as long as you own them (including remixes.)
Necropost - When a Scratcher posts in a topic older than a month. This is frowned upon as these are irrelevant/older topics that should not be brought up again.
OP - 1) Original Post, the original post (or this) in a forum. 2) Overpowered, where an aspect of a game is overpowered and should be balanced out.
Remix - A Scratcher may copy a project, add their own touches, and then share it. Please add something/remove something and give credit in the Notes & Credits, as if you don't it's reportable.
Report - When a Scratcher breaks a Scratch Guideline, they may be reported by any other Scratcher and the Scratch Team properly handles it.
Scratch 1.4 - The previous and now semi-outdated version of Scratch. Scratch has moved to Scratch 2.0.
Scratch 2.0 - The current version of Scratch, the one you're using right now.
Scratch 3.0 - The next version of Scratch that is currently in progress and set to be released in 2017.
Scratch Team - A group of moderators that help maintain Scratch and ensure that all content remains appropriate and everyone abides to the Community Guidelines.
Spam - When you repeat a useless/annoying message on a topic/studio/project/profile.

Further Explained

Here, aspects of Scratch are further explained.

There are also additional advanced features that you may use such as linking, image providing, and OS/Internet Browser listing. You are welcome to use these, just not crazily.

I like this guide! Very informative! Can I suggest adding the following thing(s):-
Signature
Cloud variable (because it's not a standard variable)

Nice guide! But I think these should also be in it:

ZZ9PluralZAlpha wrote:

Signature: A message that automatically appears under every forum post of a Scratcher. You can edit your signature by going down to the bottom of the forums and clicking “Change Signature”. Signatures are also commonly referred to as “siggy”s.

Cloud variable: A variable that is stored online, not just in a project itself. They are commonly used as a way to create global highscores.

And also:
Scratchblocks: The ‘blocks’ used to program on Scratch; used in projects and forums

New Scratcher: The first rank someone has when they join Scratch. After at least two weeks, sharing two projects, and being an active member of the community, you will become a Scratcher. New Scratchers cannot edit forum posts once they have left the page, and have a 120 second rule instead of a 60 second rule. New Scratchers can't use cloud variables, either.

Scratcher: The most common rank on Scratch. You become a Scratcher after having been a new Scratcher. Scratchers can infinitely edit forum posts, and have a 60 second rule and not a 120 second rule. They can also use cloud variables.

MAP: A multi-animatior-project. This means it is a collaborative project with more than one animator that contributed to the project.

Backpack: A tool used to move duplicates of scripts from one project to another. This way if you have a script in one project that you also want to use in another, you can add it to the backpack and you will be able to drop it into another project. The backpack used to be part of the forums until it was removed because Scratchers were using it to create hacked blocks.

Character limit: The maximum amount of characters (letters, numbers, or symbols) that can be used in a comment. The character limit is 500 characters.

60 second rule: A rule that prevents Scratchers from posting two forum posts in one minute. New Scratchers have the 120 second rule. This may seem very inconvenient, but it helps prevent spam.

Studio: A gallery of projects of a certain type. There are platformer studios, animation studios, and many others!

Great guide, though! With a few more terms in it, this may be sticky material.

Edit: Added definitions, character limit, studio, and 60-second rule

On both forums, which I will call thread A and thread B, thread A says that it is a duplicate of this one (B), and this one says it is a duplicate of A. Which one was created first?

I'm guessing this was done recently, the removing of the backpack from the forums?

Oops, sorry for late response. For some reason I thought I responded. Thank you for adding a link to the sticky!

Other Tips Section
I have added a new Other Tips section that gives some tips/advice for anything not covered in the other sections of the original post. As usual, if you have any tweaks/questions/obligations to those tips, please let me know!

I have also added the “subforum” term to this dictionary.

Thanks for reading,

I think there's another thing you should add to the dictionary, as many New Scratchers and Scratchers alike don't seem to understand it.
Kumquat - A fruit that is now commonly referenced in signatures due to Cheddargirl's signature not working in 2.0 and her resorting to referencing kumquats instead.
Sadly, my forum signature was eaten by an evil kumquat.
