Hello and welcome to the unofficial Scratch Dictionary, assembled by Scratchers and for Scratchers. Below is a list of terms arranged in alphabetical order. Feel free to post any edits or additions you'd like to suggest:

All Terms
60 Second Rule - Scratchers cannot post more than once per 60 seconds on the forums. Both this and the 120 second limit is to prevent spam.
120 Second Rule - The “60 second rule” is doubled for New Scratchers.
AMV - Animated Music Video, a project with music that they add their own sprites, backgrounds, and scripts to in the form of a music video.
Alert - When a user is reported and the ST decides to punish the user, they receive a warning. Users also receive warnings from the chat filter which may sensitive at times. An alert doesn't mean you're banned, but you should still take them seriously.
Appeal - The process of trying to undo your ban. Use Contact Us (and not any other part of the site) to do this.
AT - Abbreviation for the “Advanced Topics” forum.
Backpack - At the bottom of the editor, users can drag content in and out of this area to move content from project to project.
Ban - When a user repeatedly fails to comply to the Community Guidelines, they will be punished by not being able to access the website, unless they appeal (read above or the Official Wiki).
BBCode - The “code” of the forums, which allows parts of this post to be colored, italicized, bolded, etc. (Read the Official Wiki for more information.)
Bump - Users may bump their own topic once it has been 24 hours after the last post in it or once the topic is on the second page of its corresponding forum. Don't bump more than that, though.
CC - Coloring Contest, where a Scratcher creates a project in which other Scratchers may remix and color out.
Community Guidelines - A wonderful list of rules for the Scratch Community. Failure to comply to these rules will result in a warning (Alert through your Messages), and eventually a ban.
CGs - Abbreviation for the Community Guidelines.
Character Limit - The maximum amount of characters (including letters, numbers, symbols, and spaces) that may be used in a comment, profile info field, project info field, etc.
Cloud Variables - A special kind of variable that allows you to store data on a server, therefore allowing “online actions” such as multiplayer or high score-keeping within projects.
Curator (Studio) - A member of a studio that may add projects and remove themselves/their own projects, as well as add new curators. They cannot delete other members nor delete any other projects.
Curator (Front Page) - A weekly-selected member of the community that selects projects to be featured to the rest of the community.
Dupe/Duplicate - When a topic is the same as another; usually found on the Suggestions forum but also appears in other forums except QaS.
Emoji/Emoticon (Comments) - In comments, you can type _meow_ and other things (mostly in underscores) to output special emojis. The ST has added new emojis over the years, as well as some available for only a specific amount of time. For more information, read this article.
Emoji/Emoticon (Forums) - Comment emojis don't work on the forums, unless you use an image scaled down to the size of one. Instead, the forums have a limited range of emojis that has remained the same for probably around 10 years now. Read more about so here, which is in the BBCode category (read above.)
Forum - A section of the site's forums, such as Questions about Scratch.
FTFY - Abbreviation for “fixed that for you.”
Kumquat - A fruit that is now commonly referenced as a joke in the forums due to cheddargirl's (Scratch Team member) signature not working in 2.0 and her resorting to kumquats eating eating her signature instead. Read more about Forum Trends and most importantly the kumquats here.
MAP (animation) - Multi-Animator Project, an animation that is completed by more than one person.
Messages - The tab in which you receive alerts and notifications from projects, studios, profiles, and the forums.
My Stuff - The tab where you can see all your projects and studios.
Necropost - When a user posts in a topic that has been inactive for longer than a month. There are a few exceptions to this rule, that being on the Suggestions forum and TIMaC and TIRaP forums. If your question hasn't been answered, exceptions also apply to QaS.
New Scratcher - Rank for newcomers. For information concerning their status, limits, and promotion, read here and here.
Ninja - As in ninja'd, refers to when a user posts the same post before someone else. Usually found on QaS.
OP (Person) - Original Poster, the person who created the forum topic.
OP (Post) - Original Post, the first post in a forum topic.
QaS - Abbreviation for the “Questions about Scratch” forum.
Remix - Basically a copy of a project with a user's changes to them. Clones of original projects aren't allowed.
Report - When a user notifies the ST of another user breaking the site rules.
Signature/Siggy - A message that automatically shows up below each forum post of a specific user. You can edit your own by going to “Change Signature” at the bottom of the Discuss homepage.
Scratcher - The “regular” (but not default) rank on the site. As mentioned in New Scratcher above, you may be promoted by basically being active.
Scratch Team/ST - Moderators and developers of Scratch.
Scratch 1.4 - An older version of the editor that was used 2007-2013. Its offline editor can still be accessed by visiting its download page. It ran on Squeak.
Scratch 2.0 - Another older version of the editor that was used 2013-2019. Its offline editor can still be accessed by visiting its download page. It ran on Flash.
Scratch 3.0 - The current version of Scratch that has been used since 2019. Its offline editor can be accessed by visiting the download page. Scratch 3.0 runs on HTML5/JavaScript.
Spam - When you repeat a useless/annoying message on the site.
Studio - A gallery of projects of a certain type. There are platformer studios, animation studios, and many more!
TIMaC - Abbreviation for the “Things I'm Making and Creating” forum.
TIRaP - Abbreviation for the “Things I'm Reading and Playing” forum.
Topic - A discussion on the forums.
ToU - Abbreviation for the Terms of Use.

Some Notable Coined Terms
Here are some notable “coined” terms by specific members of the community:
Kumquat (cheddargirl) - Even though the actual fruit's name is not coined by her, it's definition on Scratch was created by her. Click on the name of the term or scroll up to ‘kumquat’ for more information.

I like this guide! Very informative! Can I suggest adding the following thing(s):-
Signature
Cloud variable (because it's not a standard variable)

Nice guide! But I think these should also be in it:

ZZ9PluralZAlpha wrote:

Signature: A message that automatically appears under every forum post of a Scratcher. You can edit your signature by going down to the bottom of the forums and clicking “Change Signature”. Signatures are also commonly referred to as “siggy”s.

Cloud variable: A variable that is stored online, not just in a project itself. They are commonly used as a way to create global highscores.

And also:
Scratchblocks: The ‘blocks’ used to program on Scratch; used in projects and forums

New Scratcher: The first rank someone has when they join Scratch. After at least two weeks, sharing two projects, and being an active member of the community, you will become a Scratcher. New Scratchers cannot edit forum posts once they have left the page, and have a 120 second rule instead of a 60 second rule. New Scratchers can't use cloud variables, either.

Scratcher: The most common rank on Scratch. You become a Scratcher after having been a new Scratcher. Scratchers can infinitely edit forum posts, and have a 60 second rule and not a 120 second rule. They can also use cloud variables.

MAP: A multi-animatior-project. This means it is a collaborative project with more than one animator that contributed to the project.

Backpack: A tool used to move duplicates of scripts from one project to another. This way if you have a script in one project that you also want to use in another, you can add it to the backpack and you will be able to drop it into another project. The backpack used to be part of the forums until it was removed because Scratchers were using it to create hacked blocks.

Character limit: The maximum amount of characters (letters, numbers, or symbols) that can be used in a comment. The character limit is 500 characters.

60 second rule: A rule that prevents Scratchers from posting two forum posts in one minute. New Scratchers have the 120 second rule. This may seem very inconvenient, but it helps prevent spam.

Studio: A gallery of projects of a certain type. There are platformer studios, animation studios, and many others!

Great guide, though! With a few more terms in it, this may be sticky material.

Edit: Added definitions, character limit, studio, and 60-second rule

Actually, I think that that topic is similar to this one, as this one came before yours.

On both forums, which I will call thread A and thread B, thread A says that it is a duplicate of this one (B), and this one says it is a duplicate of A. Which one was created first?

I'm guessing this was done recently, the removing of the backpack from the forums?

Thank you for making this!

Scratch Team Member, kayak and pickleball enthusiast, cat caregiver.

This is my forum signature! On a forum post, it is okay for Scratchers to advertise in their forum signature. The signature is the stuff that shows up below the horizontal line on the post. It will show up on every post I make.

Oops, sorry for late response. For some reason I thought I responded. Thank you for adding a link to the sticky!

Other Tips Section
I have added a new Other Tips section that gives some tips/advice for anything not covered in the other sections of the original post. As usual, if you have any tweaks/questions/obligations to those tips, please let me know!

I have also added the “subforum” term to this dictionary.

Thanks for reading,

I think there's another thing you should add to the dictionary, as many New Scratchers and Scratchers alike don't seem to understand it.
Kumquat - A fruit that is now commonly referenced in signatures due to Cheddargirl's signature not working in 2.0 and her resorting to referencing kumquats instead.
Sadly, my forum signature was eaten by an evil kumquat.
