To be ready when more people come.

Unless you get a thousand people joining in the space of a week I'd bet large sums of money that additional moderators (as in beyond yourself) are unnecessary.

You'd be better off appointing “captains” for different sections whose responsibilities aren't the same as moderators. Mods are there to police things - usually not required unless the forum's members are unruly gits. Having people invested in creating discussion on the other hand, well, there's something to be said for that. Otherwise you're basically handing out meaningless titles, in all honesty.

I say these things having spent over a decade using forums, watching some grow from humble beginnings, whilst watching others become ghost towns within days of their founding. I love forums. I want them to succeed. Doing so requires a number of things to happen and I'm doing my best to share that knowledge whilst it still has any worth. In a few years this info is probably going to be no more useful than how to clean the heads on a VCR.
