I support this idea 100%. It would be awesome to generate the mood you want people to be welcomed to your page with. It would also tell people one more characteristic about yourself: What kind of wallpaper-er are you?

somebody tried suggesting this a while ago, but someone said it would take up space. But if there was just a list of profiles you could choose from, sure. But it could be used for innapropiate stuff

We have already discussed this problem and have decided that you would just report any inappropriate stuff the same way you would report an icon. And having a list of wallpapers to pick from would ruin the entire idea because the whole point was to make profiles look more original.

Agreeing with this. A background color doesn't do anything except make your profile a little bit more “you”. Creativity is what we want right?

And doing that through your programs isn't enough? You literally have as much creative flexibility as you could possibly want. You can create programs that do practically ANYTHING YOU CAN DREAM OF. Is that enough freedom of expression for you? How is having a background productive to Scratch? How does it help users become better programmers? Why do you care if your profile has a background? Why should the ST spend their time adding this function to Scratch, other than “it will be cool” or “it will allow people to express themselves”? What would be the real reason for having this?

A profile picture is quick, simple, and small, and it's a nice way to easily identify a user from a distance.

Because a profile wallpaper isn't gonna show up when you post a comment. It's only gonna show up on the user's profile.

True, but depending on how the user makes the wallpaper, it can be quick, simple, small (depending on the design), and a nice way to easily identify a user from a distance (depending on the design). People come up with some pretty clever stuff, I just want to see what people can do if this gets implemented.

I see your point…but I still like this Idea and I think it might make all the hacking to make profiles look different down quite a bit! I wouldn't try to make this happen if I didn't think there was any worth in it. We all have our own opinions. If you don't like this or care then just stop trying to make this seem bad.

When I said “from a distance”, I meant outside of the profile page, like in project or studio comments or in the forums. If I go to visit a person's profile, chances are I know who I'm visiting- most people don't go around Scratch clicking on random people's profiles. And if I don't know who's profile I clicked on, then I'll either recognize them by their profile picture, or if I don't know them, I'll read their username at the top.

I actually do go around and click random scratchers profiles because that's how you get to know people unless all you ever do is check out famous peoples profiles.
