I don't know too many fully‑free DAW tools off the top of my head. There is a https://vocalrangetest.org/chord-progression-generator free chord generator you could try out, though. Just keep in mind it won't generate full songs for you. A lot of decent music‑making software does require a paid license, sadly.

I use FL Studio Free version. It has almost everything. To get around saving, you can put your computer to sleep or if your on a macbook you can just close the lid and it'll keep it running. Beware though that if your computer shuts down (loses battery), it'll delete it

As they said above, Ultrabox is an amazing tool for making music, and various tools are available. Playing an instrument irl will help you a ton regardless of where you make your music. Some tools are MuseScore studio, ultrabox, noteflight, GarageBand and soundslice. Some of those are way better than others

i suggest a combination of ultrabox and file garden if you want samples too

Get a piano and just experiment.
Also when your done experimenting then go to ultrabox or slarmoosbox

Tbh, like the other posts said, you don't need to really pay for software in order to compose good music, as there are some decent free programs that are fine to start with. Also, if you have time, would recommend learning some music theory, specifically harmony, as that's really important in composing.
