The Scratch 4.0 Concept

The Scratch 4.0 Concept

I think, and this is the opinion of many other Scratchers, that it's time to modernize the interface of the scratch.mit.edu website and the Scratch editor.

First of all, there are many things that could be improved in the website.
  • First of all, the fact that there are 2 different interfaces depending on the page you're on needs to be changed. (example: the main page and the profile page).

And so, since we need to reunify the interface, why not make it more modern?

Several ideas have been conceived by @JloAu about the Scratch 4.0 project, available here. When I saw this project, I thought: how cool would it be if Scratch looked like this!

Here are some screenshots of the concept:

And there are many other awesome things!

What do you think?

This is already being worked on.

No, I don't think so. You are always happy when you get loves and faves. This would let us know whether our day on Scratch had been a good one in terms of statistics, or not. Besides, it's only accessible to ourselves, and it's about ourselves. It could make people happy sometimes.

But the point of Scratch is not fame, or to be a social media (even though it is). They should put more emphasis on the creativity of Scratchers rather than their fame.

the “(x) (social action) total” would also require you to fetch every single statistic on each project; which is a lot of requests.

False, I rather be able to easily find a reply to a comment to continue a discussion than have scroll through a bunch of love/favorite notifications.

It could make people sad sometimes; it puts too much emphasis on stats and thus rubs it in if someone isn't getting any loves/faves daily, which would be the vast majority of scratchers. That can lead to a “I need more fame” mindset that is NOT what Scratch is about.

That's true. I do 100% agree with you. What if we replaced the “Dashboard” section with the latest posts? (there's a button for that, by the way, we'd have to remove the first option).

First off, all the information emphasized here looks useless. I would much rather see what my favourite Scratchers are up to rather than what I could already see in my messages. I find it looks way to rounded, and not at all like Scratch. Third, even when the Scratch Team has a good reason to make a slight change, the community goes in uproar. I don't want to know what would happen with a big change for no reason.

And you should probably ask for permission before taking somebody's project and putting it here.

Yes this is true.

Removing the dashboard is a good idea, but not with forum post, as the forums are meant to be somewhat hidden, see this rejection:

9.1 Bring back the “Discuss” tab
The Discuss tab was removed for reasons that may not be 100% clear to some users, but it will not be coming back. In general, the forums are not as restricted as the main website is, in terms of post content. For instance, users can post images on the forums, write Scratch blocks on the forums, and write and edit posts of up to 200,000 characters, none of which is possible on the main website. These options allow for more spam and misuse, especially for new forum users who are not aware of how the forums work. It is suggested that Scratchers learn of the forums through other Scratchers, who direct them to the correct forums as needed.

Scratch 4.0 is not coming anytime soon - the exact spacing between the release dates of each Scratch version is completely coincidental.

The Scratch Team is still working on updates for Scratch 3.0, so stay tuned.

I'm too lazy to make the post myself.

Yes, that's right.

Then in the Scratch project, there was also an option to reply to messages in a pop-up window, accessible from any page of the website.

I would like to state that 4.0 is not planned, and won’t be coming any time soon, most likely.

I mean, doesn't make the concept invalid though.
Also, before someone complains about the purple, the project that the original poster was talking about was released before the purple update (and I only found out before the purple update before it was announced because I happened to look at GitHub, which I barely do)
Also, the purple has caused issues for colorblind people (for tritanopia, the purple is grey and is too close to the text, though I haven't checked achromatopsia).
