This is the story writing thread (2.0) for Soundwave Productions' Kokoro Beats, a rhythm game in making! If you're interested in joining or just looking at the main stuff, links are below.

Story writers! This is where most of the brainstorming for the storyline, events, and world building will take place. The story and world notes are posted below, so please refer to that, I'll update the post whenever we have new ideas. Feel free to make suggestions that aren't listed yet, we're always looking to expand our game with new ideas! Keep in mind that we don't want unnecessary elements that can cause controversies- ask if you're unsure. ^^

  • Why is MC going? To become a singer, and a musician
  • Total Characters: Roughly 36 main interactable NPCs
  • Dev Cameos: Some will be in KFAA troupes, others may be in casting/stage classes. Potang, Yume, and Blau are coming from Kamiyama High with the PJSK characters
  • Main Character traits: Nervous, smart, shy, caring, good-hearted, generic
  • Dormhouses are separated by gender and each floor by year.
  • The dorm houses aren't very large considering the small size of students, but nonetheless are spacious.

8. EDM (Electronic Dance Music)

6 per troupe, so 42 total

Working Ideas:

-

Kokoro Fine Arts Academy Backstory:

“We strive to encourage the next generation of producers, and push the boundaries of music itself.” - End goal/Motto

Who’s the founder?
What inspired him/her? Hearing music played for the first time

I think maybe (one of) the founder(s) has the first/last name ‘Kokoro’ hence the academy name? -Yume

Intro example
The Kokoro Fine Arts Academy (or KFAA for short) is a prestigious international academy that prepares aspiring musicians for success. Accepting students from over countries (USA, Japan, Korea, China, Great Britain, Canada, ill add more later), we have trained countless popular musicians to stardom, and give them the ability to change the world!

was born in XXXX in . His/her family was poor and impoverished. Music was for the nobles, the rich, and the affluent. Up until age , had never heard the sound of music.

Come join the next generation of producers, and push the boundaries of music itself!

KFAA Classes and Info:

Classes… Could include Music Production, Music Theory, Instruments, Singing, Casting
Regular high school academics too (Algebra 1, Algebra ½, Algebra 2, Geometry, Calculus, World History, Home Ec, etc)
Music Idol (like K-pop idol, etc) could be a club
- Could be divided into subclasses for each year, like Music Theory 101, Music Theory 202, etc for each year
Special classes? Like Honor Classes, High Point classes, exclusive for high performing students maybe?
- Examples: Intro to the Music Industry, whatever it would be called where they show off their talents and try to get into something or smth idk (auditions?)
Schedule… 7 AM to 3 PM?
1st Period: 7 AM to 8 AM
2nd Period: 8:05 AM to 9:05 AM
3rd Period: 9:10 AM to 10:10 AM
4th Period: 10:15 AM to 11:15 AM
5th Period: 11:20 AM to 12:00 PM: FLEX
Lunch: 12:10 PM to 12:50 PM
6th Period: 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM
7th Period: 2:05 PM to 3:00 PM
END
Maybe we can have honor/high point classes here after school

(Back)story ideas:
(I’m thinking either troupe leader or second-to-main in the troupe) Too non-generic for the player/MC, so this is probably for an external character.
Got into music from parental influence from a very young age. After a few years, they slowly started to hate and rebel against music while on the endless strive for perfection (*not sure if we should include parental pressure since we’re trying to teach good values here, not unintentionally spreading parental hate or something). Getting accepted into KFAA provided the push to continue pursuing a career in music, but the stress from their strive for flawlessness remains.
The rest of the troupe are comprised of students wanting to help them. (The founder of this group is most likely either the troupe leader or second-to-main)

Random Ideas

MC GOT THE MUSIC BOX FROM Komori BECAUSE Komori GIVES NEW STUDENTS SOMETHING? (Polaris)
Komori likes the beach (Polaris)
scrapped
Starting from 18XX, was born into a family that was against music. No music was allowed, whatsoever. Of course, you can’t hide music, and at age , heard a song for the first time. Although it was simple, just “Mary had a Little Lamb,” he was entranced by the beauty of the song. Excited by this new discovery, tried to show his/her family, but they weren’t willing to listen. then made it his/her mission to share the wonders of music with his/her family. For 2 years, he/she learned the secretly, slowly mastering its craft. Then finally, he/she forced his/her family to listen to and his newly crafted song, Psalms of Nature.

The looks on their faces were priceless. family was so amazed by this wonderful thing called music, and began asking for more. was so happy that his/her family understood the wonders of music, that he/she wanted to share this gift with the world. He/she wanted to see that glimmer in someone's eyes, just like the ones he/she saw in his/her family’s eyes.

By the age of , he/she had composed many songs, and given the joy of music to billions. Now, wants to teach more people music, to raise the next generation of musicians!

Thanks for your input. While you draw some strong points, I still hold fast to the initial separation. I do not really mean melodic dubstep, I mean songs like Alan Walker, Porter Robinson, etc. They all have that dance feel, as well as the signature sidechain. House music does that too. I would probably lump those into EDM as well.
I still hold to my point, not because they are separate genres, but because not everyone who will play this knows that. They may get confused why there are two Electronic groups. I'll agree to disagree, because I don't want a creative difference to hold us back, but we should make the differences clear.
For the Jazz/RB&B, what are you trying to tell us? My apologies for not understanding.
It's R&B not RB&B. I was joking on how RB&B would read.
The Classical/Ballad point you made is correct. I will try to separate it into a more suitable category. Maybe Pop? Who knows.
I think Pop since R&B is essentially a different type of ballad.
Rock has been ruled out from being in the game as per request by BlauHourglass, the founder of Kokoro Beats. Unfortunately this means it is not going be in the game.
Aww, that's a rip. But we should respect Blau's vision, even if Yume is in charge now.
Thanks for the feedback!
No problem

That's fine. I'll get Ballad under the Pop category.

Alright, story writers! As requested by Yume, it seems our next task is making characters and their personalities so we can start the tutorial phase of the game. I think there are 4 or 5 characters per section, and there are 7 sections. Since we have around 5-6 story writers, I say each person writes one character per section. We also need a list of dev cameos and which section each person is going to. And we also need to brief character concepts with the art team. And we also need to come up with some sort of conflict after the tutorial which briefs you through all the genres. Safe to say our work is cut out for us lol

Edit: Oh and also can we rename EDM to dance to clear out any confusion about there being 2 electronic groups

Edit 2: Storywriters can also write lyrics, then the musicians and singers have their fun. Or people who do both (like me and Builder_53_Studios) can write the songs themselves.

Good job spreading this things out! However, we're not working the tutorial level yet. We're actually working on the backstory. So hold off on the tutorial planning, I'll be working on it later

We won't be remaining EDM to dance, I understand your argument but we went over this before. EDM is going to be separate from electronic, and aptly named so.

Also I don't sing lol, Blau and yume just want me to but I can't

Bottom line, c00lcr34at10ns. We hired you to be a musician. I saw remarkable talent in you, so I wanted to snap you up quickly lol. Try to stay in your department, and manage yourself. Us managers (and submanagers) will take care of the planning and other things. For the music, I plan to assign specific song requests to people based on their talent and specialty. Just hang on until then!

Edit: My apologies, you're listed as a story writer. Keep on working with the others, don't let me stop you lol

Alright- First things first, I'm really trying to be nice here, but please don't feel the need to take charge of the planning. We appreciate your ideas and enthusiasm, but this isn't your collab, and we have everything under control.

About the characters- Yes, I have asked for dev cameo designs to be in working, but not specifically on that post, since that was to ask story writers to get on the thread and continue the brainstorming on the basic storyline and setting. 6 characters per troupe, as per Blau's request, so 42 in total, but there will be characters in other locations as well, which we can place some of the dev cameos. We already have a character list (shared in cliq for those who have access to it), and the character sheet is available on the Designing Thread. I'll also get a list up there once we have more characters sorted out.

The current genre-based groupings will most likely all get their own unit/troupe name later on in the progress, but that's for later. No need to rename EDM to Dance. Renaming could also cause other confusions, as it could be interpreted as the many types of dance around the world, in which they each have a certain music style.

Alright, sorry if I came off as intense. I am really excited to be on the team, so I got a little hyped when I saw there was some work to do.

Oh, it's on Cliq? Yeah, maybe I'll sign up soon, that's kinda big.

Didn't think of that for some reason Yeah EDM sounds good then.

we don't necessarily have a lyric-base songwriter role, so anyone is welcome to do it!

Thank you for your suggestion! I would recommend that you don't post on this thread to keep it on-topic, suggestions can go into the main thread if needed. Of course, we wouldn't hire anyone if they aren't open to it, and co0lcr34t10ns also mentioned the language barrier. I'll bring this up to Potang and see what he thinks.
