It's less popular than JEPG,PNG etc. which is probably why they didn't include support for it. Shouldn't be too much of a problem though.

They actually (kinda) did; if you rename a .webp file to another extension like .png (even if you don't convert it!), it'll import and work fine (at least on Firefox).

I'm asking because unfortunately, a lot of images that I import happen to be WebP, so I have to spend 5 additional minutes waiting for a website to convert it to png

ChromeOS

Try renaming the file through the file manager to png.

OR

I haven't tried this, but try going to the image through a file url
eg file

/path/to/image
Then right click -> save as -> change the extension of the file to png
