please do not share any program code that you didn't make or don't have permission to redistribute.

do not run any user-created code you find here on any actual retro computers. it's much safer to use an emulator, such as applewin.

if you plan on trying out any code you find here, please inspect the code thoroughly and make sure you know what it does before you attempt to run it.

now, i've never owned one, but i've loved using the apple II ever since i first learned the basics of using it eight years ago. specifically, i've used the applewin emulator along with some old usborne programming books you can download for free.

here you can discuss everything related to retrocomputing, whether that be the apple II, the commodore 64, and everything in between. it can be used for general discussion of older computers, and it can also be used to give and get help with bugs occurring when making your own programs for older computers. you can even share the code for your own programs, which other users can type out and run on an emulator like applewin! just make sure when sharing your program code that you specify what emulator you're supposed to use it with.

What is the sole point of this topic?

I don't think many people have stuff to discuss about the Apple II (this is just an assumption, I could be wrong.)

aII toasters toast toast, but what happens when there are no longer toasters being produced? will their technology simply become obsolete, with humans moving onto bigger, better things? will toast become a distant memory, written in textbooks of the future as foods us simpler generations ate? who's to say! society is constantly moving, changing, evolving, ideas being built upon, improved upon, theories being proven or disproven. are we but a blip on the timeline? sure, our names may not be remembered, but that's not the point. you can make a change. you can make a difference. you can make the world better, even if you don't know yet. and the first step is to go for it. even if you are afraid of failure. going back to the example of toasters, do you know off the top of your head who invented them? no? have you used one? probably. so, even if you don't remember my name, if I was able to help awnser your question, that is enough. if I was able to help you, even in the slightest way, this could push you to continue with scratch and not give up after the program crashes, and maybe one day learn other programming languages and change the world. everything is a cause and effect reaction, new inventions lead to the technology of the future, and even as the generations of the past are slowly forgotten, their influence lives on to this day, affecting how the world eventually turned out and how it will be for generations to come.

and, without toasters, we wouldn't have toast.

i've been working on a replica of the tandy 400's message program from homestar runner. here's the code if anyone wants to try it out. feel free to try using it with the emulator i recommended in the op!

dear scratch filter and scratch team: this program i made below is just a simulator. it's not actually any kind of message client, and it doesn't actually send or email anyone anything. as shown in the code, when run, all it does is print some text, and it lets the user type stuff which is immediately deleted once they press enter.

all it does at the moment is show you the message and then it infinitely prompts you for a response. you can press return to make the message you wrote disappear, where you can then write a new one. to stop the program, type

END

all by itself and press return.

i'm wanting to eventually have some sort of way to choose the message you're replying to (with the options given being from the first 40 sbemails), but i'm not sure how that's going to work.

you're right, not many people on scratch have much of an interest in the apple II, since it's so old. i created this topic because the recent programming i've been doing with it has been really fun to learn about, and i thought it'd be cool to make a scratch topic as a means of educating scratchers who don't know what it is.

Great! I think this topic would be well suited to people who own/used to own Apple II or retro computers. I think though rather this would fit better as a retro computer topic instead of just focusing on the Apple II. Just my suggestion to make it more appealing to wider audiences/retro computing audiences.

They probably couldn't keep up with other companies, and so they moved to the toy computing market instead. Or they realized that there was a market for cheap computers that you can break and cost less than 100 dollars…

I think it still is used for some embedded systems/IOT.
