Depends on what you need the laptop for. If you are just going to use it for basic work and web browsing, then a basic inexpensive laptop will probably work fine for you. However, if you are going to be using it for gaming or intensive tasks and multitasking, then you might want to check out higher end or gaming laptops with more RAM and higher-quality CPUs. The laptop I use is small, 8GB with a mid-grade AMD processor and it has worked well for me.

I have a cool blog about Scratch stuff (check it out!): https://www.mryellowdog.com/

It (as said by @Mryellowdoggy) depends on what you are going to use it for.

I would recommend atleast a 4 core cpu, 8 GB ram and an ssd as a minimum for Windows 11.

I would suggest a Linux computer, because that is free, and if you would need Windows, you can use VMware.
I would suggest at least 8GB of ram, or more. Less would make it very slow.
A 6-core CPU or higher. An SSD with 500GB of storage because a lot of programs keep getting bigger, and VMware would need much if you use it.

Linux has not many apps (mostly just popular) and you should be careful, Linux does what you want even if you would ask it to delete itself. If you want to use apps not for linux i still highly suggest virtualisation.

My big project - 100th post!

For anybody thinking i am a mod, or a minimod: I just do it for fun.

Note, 9/10 times, manufacturers will compensate with more cores. Rather, you want at least 4 gigs DDR4 RAM or newer(8 gigs for many tasks), at least a i5 10400(or an AMD 5 5000), at least 128 gigs of storage.
You want a hard drive if you’re going for more storage, an SSD if you want the storage to last.
You really want integrated wifi, which most laptops have, and you want some USB 3.0 support, I’d suggest getting a laptop with ethernet support and that is modular, allowing for easier repairs later on.
Remember, cores aren’t anywhere near as important as generation or design, nor is the amount of RAM more important than the generation of it.
Use whatever OS you wish, I’d suggest Linux with WINE(or a similar alternative, such as Proton for games) or dual booting if you have the knowledge.
Go for a CPU with intimated graphics, as shoving a GPU into a machine with the form factor of a laptop is known for burning anything it touches.

Anything with an i5 10th generation+/AMD Ryzen 5 5500GT+, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and a 4GB GPU released 2014+ for cheap ones. For more high end ones, i7 12th generation+/AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800X3D, 16/32GB RAM, 512GB+ SSD, and a 6-8GPU GPU released 2019+

In almost all aspects, I would recommend a desktop computer as it's cheaper and can handle more powerful desktop components, anyways, that's my recommendation for a laptop though, not gonna argue about Desktop vs Laptop lol

That should get you by, mostly for light web browsing and word processing.

8GB barely works for anything but web-browsing and word processing nowadays, and 4GB won't even run (the latest) windows without major slowdown. it's no wonder that everybody has been against Apple keeping the base model at 8GB.
likewise, 128gb storage will mean (without external storage) a ton of deleting and reinstalling if you want to play any modern games.

if you were to do any virtualisation, i would recommend at least 12gb to do a (host | guest) 4gb | 8gb or 6gb | 6gb split.

Yeah, but i doubt a laptop would be used for gaming much.
16 gigs would be better, 4 gigs is the minimum, 8 gigs is the minimum for more then the least resource intensive tasks.

people game on laptops, and 4gb barely runs windows 11. 8gb even still gave me significant slowdown on my old laptop just by having a youtube tab in Firefox and Minecraft, and it had a pretty decent CPU.

nah bro just buy the cheapest laptop you can find (with boot from usb, UEFI that stuff), install a very tiny, core linux and use wine if you need windows apps.

unless you have BYOD because teachers go insane if you don't have windows.
or you need nvidia
or you want to be a pro gemer
or you are scared by all terminals

I don't think this is very good advice. You'll want a laptop that fits your needs. Generally, this kind of laptop won't cut it–you'll want something more powerful than that. Unless you don't need much power at all, in which case, sure. But for a lot of tasks, this is not optimal.

My Windows laptop has a Ryzen 4800H CPU and an Nvidia RTX 3050 Ti Laptop GPU. It's mid-to-high end, sure, but that's what I need it for: coding, gaming, and the occasional 3D render.
