Change the Scratch Domain
The blue header was broken. This was not.
and I’m not saying scratch should have everyone they work with’s domain, but I’m saying since scratch already has mit, it’s not a big deal.
I didn’t know .edu is for univeristys . But it still gives a good impression that scratch has .mit.edu because mit is a university, so education yay schools hooray idk

And the blue header was more broke because they could’ve been sued for it not being accessible. Could they be sued for having a domain that’s related to their roots?

Change the Scratch Domain
My smol brain couldn't decypher this so I asked ChatGPT. Is it correct?
This suggestion wants to change Scratch's domain to scratch.org. They say it won't cost anything because they already own it. They'll redirect links so they still work. Schools probably won't block it. Scratch used to be from MIT, but now it's its own thing. Passwords? Figure it out yourself. And Scratch won't buy scratch.edu because it's not becoming a school.

Misconceptions about the Scratch Room
* Low floor: It should be easy to climb in and get started with Scratch - even for Scratchers who have no experience programming. - This does NOT mean complex things shouldn't be added. Making the ceiling higher or the walls wider doesn't make the floor harder to get on.
* Wide walls: Scratchers should be able to make all kinds of things with Scratch - not just animations and games, but news programs, science experiments, things we can't even imagine. - Wide walls means that some things that may be unconventional or odd or “useless” at first glance may still be worthwhile to add, because some people may find them useful for making new unique things.
* High Ceiling: Even though it's easy for someone who is new to programming to get started with Scratch, it should still be possible to make complex stuff. - Although the floor is there, many forumers just look up at the ceiling rather than thinking about the floor. They say “this would be too complicated, new Scratchers wouldn't understand it” without considering the fact that it can be worked up to with the handy floor we have.

K cool, thanks for confirming. Anyway, I think that we shouldn't change it because then it would confuse people who were used to .edu and a lot of people would be confused with their passwords suddenly going away. The current domain seems to work for the purposes of it and MIT seems fine with Scratch being attached to it. -snip-

Change the Scratch Domain
I don't get how this would be a major issue. It's quite possible for people to not notice that a the domain of a website has changed(especially if it works exactly the same as before, i.e. every page on scratch.mit.edu redirects to the corresponding page on scratch.org). K cool, thanks for confirming. Anyway, I think that we shouldn't change it because then it would confuse people who were used to .edu
Yes. If you're using a password manager, you will need to go into your password manager and find your Scratch Passwords and a lot of people would be confused with their passwords suddenly going away.
Thing is: Scratch is The current domain seems to work for the purposes of it and MIT seems fine with Scratch being attached to it.not MIT; and the domain having mit.edu in it implies that they are the same entity.
—
Correction, mit and scratch are still a lil bit related cause they work closely still.
– After being developed and supported at MIT for more than 15 years, Scratch spun out of MIT and into the Scratch Foundation in late 2019. This transition is designed to support the continued growth and long-term sustainability of Scratch as a free, open, creative platform for children around the world.https://www.scratchfoundation.org/careers
Scratch used to be worked on by MIT. Now it is separate. This is a blatant, indisputable fact.
—
I really shouldn't have to say this, but you should definitely have sources before saying something factual like “Scratch and MIT are related, still.” I heard it somewhere, someone here definitely has a direct source but I don’t.
Why should they carry the domain of a completely separate entity, especially when that domain was only given out due to originally being part of MIT. I didn’t know .edu is for univeristys . But it still gives a good impression that scratch has .mit.edu because mit is a university, so education yay schools hooray idk
Yep. Looks like my suggestion to me. My smol brain couldn't decypher this so I asked ChatGPT. Is it correct?
~snip~
I mean, no. But I honestly doubt every decision made for Scratch is made because they'll get sued. If it is: then that's a terrible way to build software. Could they be sued for having a domain that’s related to their roots?
Hey there! Do you mind clarifying why you don't support this suggestion? no support

/hj is the worst tone indicator. It's confusing and ambiguous. I hate it. The point of tone indicators is to indicate tone, or the way that a piece of text should be read, but what does “half joking” mean? Do you just wake up in the morning and think “wow, I really have something I want to talk about seriously but also kinda not, IDK you decide.” It's useless. I hate it. It just provokes a deep rooted anger within me whenever I see it. People just comment /hj as if it makes any sense. It doesn't. Oh wow, it's a tone indicator that's has a relative meaning, how useful, I'll use it in every comment I post. NO. STOP IT. You're a tone indicator, you have only one job, and yet you sit there doing nothing apart angering me.

This one is useful because it tells you that this signature is fully 100% serious. (/srs) Who would've thought that tone indicators needed to tell you something about the piece of text they're attached to? /s
I'm serious, I'm not even going to put multiple (/hj)s a the end of my signature as to mock the previous paragraph for not getting the point of something(like previous version of my signature). /srs

Change the Scratch Domain
Bump for Steve0Greatness to seeMy school district does not have a white list, they contract with a company that censors certain topics. The only way to “whitelist” a certain website is to provide a very specific pathway to it (which takes hours). I have heard about/seen this process as my dad manages all the software for our school district. It’s not easy. Some users have already complained the Scratch Wiki is blocked as well, so you think this wouldn’t be?currently affiliated with MIT, but that’s where their original roots are.Scratch is such a large website with so many users, schools won’t trust it any lest. School monitoring software usually has an automatic whitelist for all schools. Scratch would be on it. Parents would figure it out, there could be a page explaining if that was really a problem (but since scratch.mit.edu would redirect to scratch.org I’m not sure that would be a concern) Your points are correct, but why make an unnecessary change? Yes, they’re not
As much as you say it’s not, edu domains are more trusted than org, and why make a change that may make parents/teachers/anyone not trust it more?
Scratch.org is such a better domain than scratch.mit.edu which is longer and harder to remember. Many young kids are familiar with the org TLD and may not have seen the edu TLD before.
I have never, in my entire life, heard someone even think about the edu TLD being sketchy/not trustworthy. I would like to stress that the org TLD is NOT sketchy or untrustworthy, but people are more likely to think it is. Scratch has been at .mit.edu for almost two decades, and never once have I heard that as a problem to memorize.
But the length isn’t even an issue - scratch.org already redirects here. If users don’t want to remember scratch.mit.edu, then they can already remember scratch.org. Maybe the suggestion needs to be advertising the .org domain the ST already owns. I also feel like second graders (8yos) should be able to memorize a domain. I had my login and Scratch’s web address memorized as a 8 year old. Besides that length point, why else would you want to change? Why risk losing people on your website, whether they’re there already here or not joining. It is true that I never heard anyone say they would leave Scratch if it became a .org, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t people that wouldn’t never join.

Why would that company censor Scratch? It's pretty much as family friendly as it gets. My school district does not have a white list, they contract with a company that censors certain topics. The only way to “whitelist” a certain website is to provide a very specific pathway to it (which takes hours). I have heard about/seen this process as my dad manages all the software for our school district. It’s not easy. Plus, if it isn't already blocking Scratch: I doubt it would.
I have never, in my entire life, heard someone even think about the edu TLD being sketchy/not trustworthy. I would like to stress that the org TLD is NOT sketchy or untrustworthy, but people are more likely to think it is.
I have never heard of anyone having an irrational fear of .org domains, at least not before making this thread.
Scratch has been at .mit.edu for almost two decades, and never once have I heard that as a problem to memorize.
But the length isn’t even an issue - scratch.org already redirects here. If users don’t want to remember scratch.mit.edu, then they can already remember scratch.org. - I have not talked at all about length
- Memorization is not a problem that I have touched on, like, at all(if it's before #266: it doesn't count).
- I have changed it to only be for Scratch.org, it has been that way for a while now.
just a bitThat topic is a relic. Glad you could cite a source where the other person legit said “nah.” I guess i should put my money where my mount is
At the same time: 2 (as you said, #315) separate entities working together doesn't mean that one should carry the domain of the other. That's just a bit silly.
