Since the scratch assets block, I have not uploaded a single image into the scratch forums. Why? because it's hard for me to use Cubeupload. I have to take a screenshot, open snip and sketch, save the screenshot, log into cubeupload (which never saves my login for some reason), find and upload the file, and then paste the link. This is a much more difficult process than the previous take a screenshot and paste that I used to have to do. This is why, I propose a manual verification for users with over 500/1000 posts.

If a user has over 1000 posts, and the posts are legitimate (subject to a brief review of the posts made on the account, along with age of account), there is likely much more good than bad for that user to post. Additionally, if this user was going to post innapropriate images, they could already use cubeupload which I am sure that anybody with this count of posts is aware of.

Now, I do understand that there is moderator work. However, the amount of people that are above this number does not grow daily, and mods would have to go through about (just short of 1000 users if the requirement was 1k posts, 2017 users if the requirement was 500 posts) existing users, so this would not be a great feat. If it takes a moderator 5 minutes to review a user, and there are 10 moderators spending 1 hour on this every day, it would take about 8.3 days or a little more than a week for all the existing users if the requirement was 1k posts, and if it was 500 posts, it would take just over 2 weeks to go over all the posts. So, this could probably be developed and implemented within the span of a month, without full dedication during that month.

I was very tired writing this. I already corrected 2 mistakes, if there are any more please let me know.

How do you propose a user is “verified”, for example, what types of posts would be considered “legitimate” and are worthy of being verified, and how would these select users have access to assets, whereas others don't? Don't get me wrong, I fully support having assets back as I cannot use cubeupload (and it's a pain), so this would be beneficial, but I am worried about the logisitics to bring this to fruition.

I recommend reading jvvg's essay about the scratch team before complaining, as it may change your opinion and provide insight on the topic.

Support. I completely agree with everything you said here, It would also be nice if scratch could allow images starting with the name: https://scratch.com
Edit: They should also have to be Scratchers not New to Scratch

Scratch.com subdomains can’t be nought, though.
And .scratch isn’t a TLD i believe

Before Scratch assets, this was the intended method to upload images. It was never intentional to make it easier. The fact that this process is so cumbersome is beneficial since then trolls will be less likely to upload inappropriate images.

Given that, this is rejected:

10.3 Remove restricted image hosts or add your own websites

By requiring an image host website (such as cubeupload) to be used when posting images on the forums, this decreases the chances of inappropriate images being posted on the forums, as inappropriate images are not allowed on these image host websites. The Scratch Team does not have the time to whitelist everybody's websites, especially when acceptable websites already exist.

Years ago, the Scratch forums suffered from trolls who continually spammed the forums with highly inappropriate images. It got so bad that the [img] tag had to be temporarily disabled so it could be improved. Certainly Scratchers would prefer to have to use an image hosting website rather than not being able to post images at all.

1. As explained, a user is verified by their account age and a quick post review (to make sure they don't spam, and aren't a bot)
2. The same way Scratch Team members have access to moderator tools and normal users don't. There's definitely a way to filter permissions built into scratch forums, so it wouldn't be too complicated to implement.

I am aware, but it's too hard for people who are trying to actually contribute to the community. A fantastic example actually is My Sticky in BaG, which has a list of all color inconsistiencies. If I want to update this sticky, I will have to migrate all of these images back to CubeUpload, which is a ton of work for me, that just benefits the people making it harder for me to upload it. I understand that it's to filter trolls, but as my post explains, it would be hard for these “trolls” to get verified on this platform. And once again, as my post states, if a verified user went rogue, it would be no different for them to use cubeupload, since a seasoned forumer would already know about this image host. It saves them a maximum of 3 minutes to upload bad images, and this suggestion has so much potential good for the community like I already said.

Due to these reasons, I believe this is a solution to the rejection, that checks all the boxes and solves the problems with the rejection.

Troll Image spam isn't much of an issue anymore, as scratch assets existed for a while now and the Scratch Team never really noticed it as an issue until they unintentionally blocked it out. However, a lot of modern stickies, guides, and overall helpful posts made by positive forumers have been locked as the ban was made.

Out of curiosity, in your 2-3 years as a moderator, how many forum users did you see send innapropriate images with 500-1000+ posts?

Support. The process of verifying is manual so much can’t go wrong. I doubt someone who’s willing to abuse images would have 500+ non-spammy posts.

Basically just users who don’t have a lot of spammy and off topic posts.

Thanks for tracking this down.

Really, there shouldn't be a large need for images on the Scratch forums in it's role of supporting the use of Scratch. I think it is pretty unlikely that the team would want to invest the resources to make it easier - given all the other priorities we are facing.
