It was a normal Sunday evening for me. I was sitting at my desk, on my computer watching youtube (admit it, we all do that, right?) and I got an email from my best friend.

so can you maybe come over this saturday (2-6pm) and
hang out? your kinda my only friend so it'll be just us

I quickly replied and accepted the invitation. My birthday was on the same day as her birthday, which was really cool. She'd always joke that we were twins. I wasn't just our birthdays, we were similar in many ways. Of course, we looked very different, but I mean as in personality. We were both introverts, we both loved music and theatre, and we both hated the cafeteria food and would rather bring our own lunches every day. We'd been close friends since 2nd grade and nothing was going to change that. At least, I hoped not. Even though… lately I'd been feeling something different about Ember. Ever since last month, when she held my hand on the bus ride home from school, I'd been wondering if I had a crush on her. Like, there was something about her. Maybe it was her wavy red hair that went down to her waist. Maybe it was her excited emerald eyes that lit up when she talked to me. Or maybe I was just telling myself a lie. How could I like girls? My parents always said I'd find a boy one day when I got older. Even though I couldn't imagine myself with a boy… but I could imagine myself with- this was all just so confusing, really. So I was not going to tell anyone and I would wait for it all to get sorted out on it's own. And I definitely couldn't tell Ember. That's something I hoped would always stay a secret. I closed my computer and exited the room, looking for my cat. I needed a distraction.

I managed to get through the week, even though I got a bad score on my test. On Saturday, I was so excited. I mean, I was 13 AND I was going to hang out with my best friend. Sounds like the best day ever. When I got there, Ember ran over to me and hugged me. “Hi Coral!!” she squealed. My cheeks turned pink for a moment as I hugged back. “Hi,” I smiled. “Okay, you brought your bathing suit, right? We're going swimming in my backyard. But first, it's time for the games!” Ember's always so optimistic and excited about everything. That's what I love about her.
We played lots of fun games (a lot of them Ember made up herself) for about half an hour. Next we went to a park to go rollerblading. She showed me a cool move that she'd been working on for a while. Then we got some candy and went home. Next, it was time to get in the pool. I loved swimming. The feeling of floating is the most exciting feeling you could possibly feel. When I jump in and I hit the water, it welcomes me. I can do amazing flips, too. I don't have a pool in my backyard, but I visit Ember's house all the time to jump in. Ember likes swimming too, but she doesn't connect with water the same way I do.
I got into my bathing suit and stepped outside. The pool was right in front of me, next to the porch. I dipped my toes in, waiting for Ember. She came out with her clothes on. “I can't find my bathing suit, I had it just earlier. You can go ahead and jump in. I don't mind,” she said. “But I'll watch you jump in, your dives are amazing,” I grinned and stood up. I went around to the diving board (yes, Ember had a diving board, but we had to attach it, which took forever) and bent my knees. I launched myself into the air and spun my body around. Then I quickly went into cannonball position and splashed into the water. Bubbles rose all around me and I rose to the surface. “How was that one?” I asked. “Awesome,” she smiled. “Now I gotta find my own gear!” She turned around and went inside. I started swimming to the shallow end, but something weird happened. The water around me sort of… pushed me to the shallow end without me having to do anything. Like the Lazy River at the waterpark where there's a current and you just float along and it pushes you around. But this was a normal backyard pool, and it stopped as soon as it started. And everything was normal. I went to the ladder to get out of the pool, because something didn't feel right. But again, the water simply pushed me to my destination. And as I was climbing up, I slipped and fell in. I tried to hold my breath, but accidentally sucked in. And then that's when the weirdest thing happened. I breathed air. Well, except it wasn't really air, I realized. It was the water. But it went down just fine. I didn't choke. I rose up to the surface, completely freaked out. Nothing happened–everything was normal. I climbed the ladder and got out. This was just freaky. Just weird. And I didn't want anything to do with it. Not long after, Ember came outside in her swimsuit. “Found it!” she said. “Time to jump in!” When she approached the diving board, I spoke up. “The water's weird. I'm warning you, something weird happened to me when I was down there–” I stopped and considered it. She might think I was weird if I told her I could breathe under the water. But she's my best friend. “So, basically, I started breathing. But like, underwater. In the pool. And water was pushing me around.” “Well… I mean, I'm sure that's weird, but maybe you were imagining it. Well, breathing underwater doesn't sound like something you'd imagine. But I know you. You have a wild imagination sometimes.” She stepped forward and jumped. She didn't do any tricks, since she didn't know any, even though I tried to teach her some. She just fell in with a big splash. Water drops flew everywhere. Her head appeared above the water, and I said, “Wow, that was a big splash–” but I was interrupted. She was yelling and flailing her arms. “Freezing. Cold. Water!!” I rushed towards the edge. “Wait, what?” Something was going on here. Something weird. And I didn't like it one bit.

I panicked. Ember kicked herself out and shuddered. “Why is that so cold!?” she panted. Meanwhile, steam (smoke?) was still rising up from her and when I sat next to her, I felt hot. "What was that?“ I frowned. ”I know, that's never happened before. The temperature was always fine,“ I agreed. ”And the weird thing is, it was okay for me when I jumped in. Let me see,“ I jumped off the edge, forgetting what happened last time I got in until it was too late. The water surrounded me, and I spun like crazy as I rose to the surface. ”See, it's fine!“ I yelled. My friend dipped her toe into the water and her whole body shivered. ”It feels icy but also burning." Hmm. “Why is it that the water freezes you, but it welcomes me warmly?” I wondered out loud. Ember looked at me with a puzzled expression on her face. “You're putting it weirdly,” she replied. I tried to explain. “Well, I feel so connected to the water. It embraces me when I jump in. But you're drawn away from it. You get me?” “Kind of,” she scrunched her face up. “How are you connected to it, though?” “Watch,” I replied. I turned around and swam to the bottom of the pool. And I started breathing. Kind of. The water went down just fine and I didn't choke. I opened my eyes and gasped. I could see everything perfectly, like I was wearing goggles. What the heck was going on? I was down there for a good minute, taking my surroundings in, until I heard, “Coral! Coral! Please come back!” and I shot up to the surface. “So, did you see?” "See what? All I saw was you literally dying!“ ”Oh, I wasn't drowning. That was what I was trying to show you. I can breathe under the water.“ ”Wait–what? You can what? How come you never told me?“ Her tone was angry and confused. ”I didn't know until literally today! Just now. I swear.“ I pushed myself backwards a little bit. ”Oh, sorry. Well…“ Suddenly, the full realization hit her. ”What the–?! How? Underwater? What?“ She backed away. ”It's really freaky. And confusing. But I can figure it out. I want you to help me,“ Ember shook her head. ”Too weird.“
I sighed. ”I could help you find out what's up with you. There's something going on here with both of us, I'm sure of it. Trust me.“ I got out of the pool and held out my hand. She hesitated, then took it. My heart pounded and my skin tingled when she touched my fingers. The physical contact made me feel warm and happy. I wished I could hold her hand forever. But she shook it and let go very quickly, and a part of me was disappointed. She smiled and walked away. ”I better get changed, since I'm not going swimming. But it was still a fun birthday today. Your mom's coming soon to pick you up, so we can't talk now, but maybe tomorrow?“ I nodded. ”Okay."

Later that day, when at was at home, thinking of what had happened, an idea struck me. I raced to the kitchen and got a bowl. I filled it up with water and dipped my hands in it. I brought them out and water drops dripped into the water. They caused ripples. They reminded me of the ocean, where there was small waves and big waves, and the small waves looked like ripples in the water. I looked down and saw, in the bowl, small waves like the ones in the ocean forming and making the water slosh around in the bowl, nearly spilling it. I gasped– and then I suddenly realized what might be happening.
