Scratch Writing Camp Writing Sharing Thread (March 2022)

Main Cabin Daily, March Sixth
I paired up with @snowyforest- and our prompt was “the wind sways through the forest calmly - ironic, since the situation you’re in is far from calm. you have to get this right, or else… “

The wind sways through the forest calmly, creating a soft rustling whistle through the leaves. Birds sing merrily in the distance, and the whole setting seems extremely peaceful.
Which is ironic, considering the situation I'm in is anything but peaceful.
I have to get this right, or else…
I'm riding my horse, Mango, just hoping I can get there in time. Because if I don't, if the Others get ahold of the Item I'm supposed to deliver, it's all over.
I'm sixth in a set of people who've risked everything to first claim, and now deliver the Item. We're not even allowed to know what it is, but I know it's important. Like, fate-or-the-world type important. The five before me knew too. That's why we're willinging to give everyone to get it safely delivered.
And one did.
There was supposed to be a seventh person in the brigade, one last person to get this Item where it belongs.
I was never meant to be the one to deliver it.
But the Others got her.
And they're going to get me if I'm not careful.
And no one will know.
Mango snorts and stomps at the ground, growing aggited by something.
“Mango, it's okay girl…”
I should have known better. I should have trusted Mango. After all, she'd never led me wrong before…
A few minutes later, a shouting group of people come storming out of the trees, riding tall dark horses and dressed in heavy armor.
The Others.
“There she is!” The one in front yells. “Get her! Get the Item!”
“Mango! Go!” I flick the reins. “Go!”
She hardly needs telling, already in a full gallop.
We keep going, still being pursued by the Others. I can feel Mango breathing heavily underneath me. I don't know how much longer she can keep doing this… but the Others are gaining on us. If we don't try to get away, we never will.
We come upon a huge fallen tree blocking the only way through the tightly knit trees.
Mango starts to slow, and I know she's thinking of stopping. I know we're not going to make it, but still I urge her on.
She listens, and jumps.
For a minute, a thrilling minute, we're flying.
“We're going to make it!” I dare to let myself think.
And then we hit the ground. Hard. Mango's knees buckle underneath her, causing her to fall to the ground. I'm flung to the side, hitting the ground myself. I'm tangled in the reins and stirrups, making it impossible to get up. I don't even know if Mango is okay.
My head is pounding. I think I hit it on a tree. My eyes start to close.
No! Stay away. Must stay awake.
The pouding hoofbeats of the Others' horses draw nearer and nearer.
No. This can't be happening. This can not be happening.
Still the hoofbeats come closer.
No…
Finally, my eyelids fall shut. All I can do now is hope that somehow, somehow, the Others don't see me lying here. Or if they do, that they spare Mango. And if miracles really happen, maybe they won't find the Item.
That's my last coherent thought before I'm dragged into blissful oblivion.
All the while, the wind sways through the forest calmly…

How our stories were similar and different

They actually ended up fairly similar. There’s some kind of conflict going on, and they seem to be set in similar type worlds. The main characters also have similar experiences with the opposite side, including a chase sequence involving horses. One of the differences is the main character in my story hasn’t gotten away, whereas Juliet and Gail did.

Those Creatures: Act 1 (1101 words)

It is not safe for me to linger here any further. This week has been an absolute hell for me. Since the day I arrived, I’ve been chased by all types of malicious creatures. I don’t know their whereabouts, and I hope they do not know mine. After the events of last week, I was finally able to camp out on the fourth floor of an abandoned apartment. At least here, I can make a swift getaway to the local grocery store, then hopefully race back with my heart intact.
These creatures. They follow me. Everywhere. Last week, Sunday, Miki and I were the only ones left in our hometown. We decided never to return here again. She promised me that we’d make it out together. I don’t know why I’m writing this. If anyone finds this, I’m probably dead. Do not, under any circumstance, try to locate me. It would be completely impossible once they find me. Even if they don’t kill me, it would only be a matter of time before they do.
This sketchbook is the last of my belongings. All the others were lost in arson. We had to burn it down. It was the only path of survival. As I write, there is one coming towards me. I should run. I really should, but… something’s stopping me. I don’t want to leave. In order to escape with my life, I should run. However, whatever’s stopping me from going back outside, It wouldn’t be the best choice anyways. RUN No. YOU SHOULD No. GO THERE No. I know what this is. Don’t try to scare me after the hell you’ve put me through. Don’t RUN AWAY justify yourself by saying you and the others need to live, too. What about me? YOU Do you think I’m a pushover? MUST LEAVE Stop possessing me. Before I turn around and scare you, too. RUN AWAY NOW You’re not on my side. I won’t TURN BACK comply to your demands. HOW How, you ask? Because of you, NO I’ve gone crazy. That’s IMPOSSIBLE my simple answer.
I WANT YOU TO LOOK AT ME
Okay. Sure.

So. I looked. DID YOU SEE ME Yes. ARE YOU SCARED No. Of course not. WHY Because I’ve seen hundreds of you before. Thousands. IS THAT TRUE It is. YOU MUST BE I told you to stop. DEAD Stop. IM RIGHT Stop it now. YOU ARE PASSSED Shut it. YOU ARE ONE I said, quit it. OF US No. YOU ARE It’s not true. YOU ARE A MONSTER

Argh. This, “thing”, it keeps walking behind me or close to me. Like Miki used to. It follows me even in the rain. Even in snow. Even near other creatures. The thing’s still telling me, “You’re dead.” I’m still well and alive. If I were truly dead, I’d be able to escape this dastardly area sooner. I’ve learned many things over the past month. It always rains here. Not once has the sun shone upon the ground of this place. Even so, there is a glimpse of sunlight from the terrace of the nearby highschool, and there are streetlights where I’m currently staying. Ironically, the fourth floor of that wreck of an apartment is the safest place for me to camp out. Otherwise, I would have chosen somewhere less superstitious. Like the nearby highschool I mentioned. I say it’s “safer” because the creatures mostly stay on the ground. While some are more comfortable above, it’s not many of them, and those don’t attack me. The reason why some are hostile and some aren’t is unclear to me. On top of that, the local grocery store and gas station are right next to each other, and directly across from this building. Despite living for about a month, I still know next to nothing about the creatures. I don’t know if they can be found outside of Dark Ground 5, or how long they’ve really been around for. I believe the creature following me would have the knowledge I so desire. If such is the case, I have many questions for it. Who knows if it would listen. Honestly, if I can live and never know the answers, that’s perfectly fine by me.

Early noon
I have discovered that it is intensely more beneficial to write the time of day over my notes. If I do not, then I will have no access to a real time calendar. It is several times more reliable, though probably less efficient, to count days simply by recording the time. The creatures have broken all the available clocks in this town, and the only calendar I’ve found so far is an old one from 2017. It is of no use to me now. I vaguely remember it being the fifth of December before the traffic accident. The creature from yesterday is still following me. HELLO Yes. Hello, my good old friend. FRIEND Correct. I figure it would be accurate to call us friends now, is it not? I LIKE HAVING FRIEND It is settled then. OKAY Goodbye, friend. Since I last wrote, I realized that this creature does not want to eat me or torture me like the more angry ones do. It’s only curious. Keeping it around would be nice, especially considering that I am curious about creatures as well. DO NOt CALL uS CREATURES What should I write then? WE ARE MONSTERS Oh. I see. I shall refer to you and your other kin as Monsters from now on. THANK YOU HUMAN You are very welcome, friend.
Late noon, same day
From my friend, I have learned that Monsters cannot communicate regularly (either through speech or sign). They can only talk to each other in telepathy, or by possessing living beings and using their actions as a sign instead. I just happened to be writing, and my friend happened to know some English. Our conversations are held on a separate paper. I finally saw a huge stack of printer paper on a shelf in the office locale store a bit further from this apartment. My new friend and I have been selfishly using the paper to write to one another. Though it is wholesome in most cases, in a situation like mine, I can’t help but feel terrible for not being more resourceful with such a valuable object. This sketchbook, I have reserved for formal self writings of my day. This is for the purpose of possibly making new discoveries about the outside via record. I will have to end this writing here. It is almost about the time for dinner.

PROMPT
“your genetics…seem to be…odd.” The doctor bites their lip. “what do you mean?” I inquire, confused.

“Oh..” Dr. Michael said, who was currently doing an x-ray of some sort.
I glanced in his direction. “What?”
“Um.. Just a moment.” He beckoned Katie’s mom.
They walked to the corner of the room. Michael whispered something, waving wildly at the screen with my x-ray. Her mom turned pale.
“Ok, seriously WHAT?” Katie said, freaking out now.
“Honey, we’d better get home now.” She said sharply, exchanging a glance with Michael.
Katie thought that right now it would be best to obey her mom right now. She jumped off the patient table, trying not to run out of the room. As soon as the door closed, she turned to her mom. “Mom, what is going on in there?”
“Not now honey.” she said with that same sharp tone.
I started walking towards the exit, but my mom stopped me.
“Dr. Michael needs to give us something.” she said, each word pushed out like boulders.
I waited, impatient to be out. Finally, he came out, holding a couple papers. He said a stiff bye, then turned and walked back. We walked to the car in silence.
When we got in, my mom heaved a sigh, and started the car.
“Mom, what was that?!?”
She turned towards me. “Look, I can’t explain.”
“What do you mea-”
“Katie!”

I didn’t want to speak, and it was silent for a while. My mom finally broke the tense silence. She turned around.
“Your dad-” her voice broke. “He.. He wasn’t really from around here.”
“Ok, so what?” she said, unnerved.
“He wasn’t from around, well, this planet.”
Katie was speechless. “Wh-What?”
She gave her a sad smile.

“Hold on kiddo, it’s gonna be a long run.”

prompt: it won't be long before something happens. something bad.
partner: @pixelated_pickax | their story
I am handcuffed. It won’t be long before something happens. Something bad.
I can’t believe I am handcuffed. I’ve told myself and went over my actions that lead to this a million times, but I still can’t believe it.
I am handcuffed. In a cave. Unable to reach the food in my backpack. Or my water. Or everything I’d like to have right now.
I still remember what got me here - my imprudence and neglect. Ack, I’d love to be able to get back in time and fix things. But what’s done it’s done, says the saying.
Each time I try to think positively, an imaginary wind blows negative thoughts back to my mind. I’ve had thousands of self-conversations that always end up with me being worried.
“Let’s, uh, let’s play something!” I tell myself.
“Uh, sure. Eh, let’s play I spy with my little eye-”
“What I spy with my little eye is that I’m gonna be stuck here forever…”
It’s been something like that for about 48 hours. I have no way of tracking what time it is, except the sun, but that isn’t a great help, to be honest, since from where I am I can’t really see anything except a small bit of the sky. I close my eyes for the hundredth time, but, for the hundredth time, guilt haunts me. I’ll try to sleep for a bit. If I ever get to sleep calmly and don’t wake up agitated by horrible nightmares. I’ll try to sleep for a bit and get out of this reality, this world, this dimension in which I am handcuffed and enter -at least for a bit- to the relaxing world of dreams.
Ah, I’m back up. I still remember what got me here. I’m bored, so I’ll tell myself the story of my capture.
I was exploring the cave. And then, I saw two ways. I chose the left one randomly - I was too distracted looking at the “beautiful sunset” to not choose one randomly. And didn’t pay enough attention to descifrate what a sign said, referring to the left way: “.ti terger ll’uoy - ereh og t’noD”.
However, I get what it meant now…
I walked for a bit - until I reached an alley. I was about to turn around, go back, and use the other way - when a shadow (I didn’t get to see who it was) got me and handcuffed me.
I regret everything…
Again, it won’t be long until something bad happens…
I see a shadow. It’s approaching me, with something pointy on its hands…

SWC Daily March 6th

Partnered with @blackpantersforever

Me,Chia,Ella,Lily,Tabitha and Emily were just walking around on a dark halloween when Ella thought it was a good idea to go to the large,abandoned house on the top of the hill to make tik toks.”We’ll be literally famous!” She said squealing with excitement in her gray eyes.We had nothing else to do so stupidly we all agreed.Going through a scary forest with only the full moon light to guide us was a very dangerous idea but if it was for views Ella would do anything and when I say anything I mean ANYTHING!

When we got to the other side of the forest, we came to a wonky stone path that led all the way up to the house and when Lily knocked on the door it opened with a gush of wind and a large creaking noise.”Hello!?” Lily shouted looking in.”We want to make tik toks in here hope it’s okay lol.” Ella shouted and we all started laughing.Suddenly, we all got pushed into the house and knocked out..

When we woke up we were all in a pitch black room with cobwebs across the ceiling and rats scurrying across the floor.It was also un-naturally cold in there as well which was of for it was quite warm that night.Tabitha was the first one to wake up “GUYS!WHERE ARE WE?!” She screamed and we all woke up with a start and there was something or someone coming towards us It was an evil spirit mad we were using it’s old house to make tik toks and that we were disrespecting its property!Chia figured out that we had to do and ancient ritual and prayer to send it away.So, we were searching the house for clues while on the run from an angry ghost!

When we had found all the clues we needed,we all gathered in a circle in the dark room,lit some candles and started chanting,”We’ve had enough of you today please go away,we’ve had enough of you today please go away,WE’VE HAD ENOUGH OF YOU TODAY PLEASE GO AWAYYYY!!” With a spark,bang and sizzle a magic wave of dark blue magic chased away all the bad spirits in the haunted house and we were able to safely escape.Emily (who strangely hadn’t talked for the whole gurney which was extremely weird) finally said something and what she said was amazingly important,what she said was…..”OH MY GOSH THANK THE LORD THAT WAS OVER!ELLA DARED ME TO NOT TALK UNTILL THIS WAS OVER!” She sighed happily.We all looked at Ella with a look of annoyance on our beautiful faces for we knew this was her fault and we knew we were never listening to a word she says on Halloween nights just like this one.

We happily continued trick or treating and enjoying our selves and also retired to our normal lives with drama and ramen noodles.

THE END (for now..)

Everyone knows about the castle.
You know, the one with crumbling, gray stone walls and high turrets that looks like it came out of a storybook? Everyone knows about that one. The one with the large wooden door and the wide moat, possibly inhabited by vicious crocodiles. The one that creaks and seems to shift in the night, turning into a dark, looming presence with spikes all over it and a yellowish glow. The one that shudders and emits strange, unearthly sounds from within. The one that everyone thinks about, day and night, but no one can actually go and enter the castle to figure out the source of the strangeness, because of the crocodile moat and the fact that the drawbridge is always up, always, and never comes down. The one that is the source of all the gossip in town but no one can actually reach. No one, that is, except her.
———-
I stand humming to myself, watering and taking care of my flowers. I mean, they're ghost flowers, but they're flowers nonetheless. And they're beautiful, If I do say so myself. There are bluebells and tulips and pink roses and sunflowers, growing and curving and transparent with light blue highlights. I water and inspect each of their stems and petals one by one. I'm so focused on my gardening work, in fact, that I almost don't hear when light and airy voice sounds in my ear.
“…Hello.”
“Hi-' I absentmindedly turn around, my mind still on plants, I almost bump into the thin ghost of a boy hovering a few inches off the ground directly behind me. I look up in surprise. He's tall, with short messy hair and large inquisitive eyes. Like most ghosts, I can look through him, and he's a bit blurry at the edges. I can't make out some features about him like the details of his shirt or his shoes. Even with his height, his plump cheeks, large round eyes and heart-shaped face makes me think he is younger than me by at least a few months. I put down my watering can and gape at him. He appears to be one of the servant boys, but they usually don't speak to me and keep their heads down. I have no idea what to say.
”You're Averie, right?“ He asks me quietly, tilting his head.
”Yep, that's me,“ I answer, not being able to stop an awkward giggle from rising in my throat. ”What-what are you doing here?“
”Oh, I just came here to get some peace and quiet from the castle. You know how the dinners can get. The royal family is so fussy.“
I didn't know. But don't say that aloud. I just clasp my hands behind my back and tried not to feel out of place.
The ghost boy's eyes widen even more as he looks past me to the flowers.
”Those are beautiful.“ He says breathlessly. Drifting a little closer so he can see better. I take a step back, feeling my awkward smile widen into a genuine one.
”Well, thanks,“ I say a bit shyly. ”I try my best to help them grow happily and healthily. You know the king and queen love their roses.“ Even though ghost flowers don't require as must maintenance as regular ones, I still spend most - if not all - my time in the royal garden, even setting up a little shed there so I can sleep. ”Some of them need just the right amount of sunlight and water, and even though these flowers can't necessarily die, they can still wilt and look a bit cloudy. So I try my best. to make sure that doesn't happen. Plus, the ghost caterpillars-' I quickly shut myself up before I start rambling. The ghost boy, however, looks intrigued instead of put off.
“Well, I think you're doing a wonderful job.” He flashes me his own small smile. I smile back. ‘That’s very kind of you.“
We talk for a bit. To my surprise, the words come smoothly and naturally after he asks me more about my gardening work. I feel a spark of joy at being able to talk about something I'm passionate about, and his interest just motivated me even more and fills me with joy.
Finally, when the sun has almost gone completely from the sky, the boy politely stops me mid-sentence. ”I need to go now, or I might get in trouble.“
”Oh,“ I say, feeling a little disappointed. ”Okay.“
”I feel like I made the right choice in visiting the royal gardens today. I'll see you around, Averie."
The boy smiles again at me and then floats softly away and through the thick wooden door of the castle. I blink as if woken up from a dream, and my heart feels usually light like a fire has been ignited inside of it. Then I shake my head and turn back to my flowers, silently hoping the ghost boy will return again the next day
——————
Everyone knows about the girl around the castle. Rumoured to be the old royal gardener's great-granddaughter. She went mad one day and fled. No one knows how she got past the moat, and the crocodiles, no one knows how she survived on that broken piece of land near the castle, in the demolished garden, watering invisible plants and talking to nothing. No one knows how she went crazy. or why she spends her days hiding and singing to air.
No one, that is, except her.

daily 6, partnered with @-limeade!

Why are you here?”

Finally, she's spoken.

“You told me to follow my heart.” I flash what I hope is a winning smile up at the abyss, icy stars staring down at me fathomlessly. “So I did. Don’t you worry, I rest by day.”

And follow me at night?”

“You got it.” I can’t help the lovestruck smile that falls across my face. “Can’t ever catch up though, can I?”

No. You never will.” Her voice is as pure as her light, silver and satin and cold as the void she calls home. “You know you will never reach me. There is no point beyond the horizon where you can catch me, no end to the path you take. I tell you now: go.”

“Nah.” The grass is green here, the trees far and few between – civilisation seems so far, but I have waited a full month for this day. I can only talk to her when she is full, of course, and unsmothered by the black clouds. “It’s worth it.”

You are in love with me.”

“Gee, lady. Stating the obvious?”

You don’t know where you’re going, do you? No concern of north, south, east or west – would you follow me past the edge of the earth? Would you expect me to catch you?”

“No, I wouldn’t, my lady.” The hunger in my stomach growls a little louder. I am strong, stronger than I ever was before I started my pilgrimage, but even I am mortal. It is an upsetting reminder. “In fact, I don’t think you’d even notice, hm?”

I might not.” She sounds faintly amused. “I admire your realism, Sol.”

“I’m talking to nothing right now,” I rib back. “I don’t think we can talk of realism.”

She laughs, the sound fainter now; dawn is coming. It’s okay. I can wait. I’d wait till the end of the universe, just to hold her in my arms.

Goodbye, my little sunlight. How cruel, how selfish I am, to wish we meet again.”

So for now? I’ll go on waiting. “Goodnight, moon.”

SWC Daily -

Prompt: You are watching a movie on a Friday night in your bedroom with some friends when suddenly you hear a thunderclap and white blinds your eyes. When your vision clears, you see some confused strangers standing awkwardly in the middle of the room, and you realize that they're the characters from the movie.

Mirabel, Isabela, and Luisa look around confusedly as you stand up, eyes wide. “How are you here?” you ask no one in particular as the characters get their bearings.
Isabela seems to already have turned on Mirabel as the latter takes off her round, lime green glasses to rub her eyes in disbelief. “This is all your fault, isn’t it? Let me guess, this is some sort of prank to ruin my special day with Mariano, hm?”
Mirabel reels back, affronted. “Why is it always me?! I didn’t do anything!”
You hear a quiet sob from the corner of the room as your friends attempt to break up the sisters’ feud. It seems you’re the only one who heard it, and you slip out of the crowd to find Luisa wiping tears from her eyes. You look up at the strong yet softhearted young woman and give her a reassuring smile. “Hey, things are going to get better. No more pressure.”
“How do you know that?” Luisa countered, wary of your knowledge on her struggles. You suppose it would be kind of strange if a person you had just met knew so much about you.
“Mirabel told me,” you fib. “She’s going to fix everything.”
Speaking of the protagonist, Mirabel herself was now walking over to comfort Luisa with a hug. “Hey, the other kids just explained everything to us. We’ll be back home in a bit, no need to worry!”
Your friends were rebooting the TV in an attempt to make the characters go back into the movie, but you decided to take the chance to help the story along.
Dashing over to Isabela, you whisper in her ear. “You don’t have to pretend to be perfect. You already are.” She looks at you in frightened confusion as you then tap Mirabel’s shoulder. “Hey, you can do this. Don’t be afraid to talk about Bruno.” you encourage her with a grin.
Mirabel still seems slightly disoriented, but nods thankfully. “I don’t know how you know all this, but thank you.”
“The TV’s back on!” your friend yells from across the room.
You turn back to Mirabel quickly. “Okay, you’re going to be back home in a few minutes. Don’t give up.”
Mirabel, Isabela, and Luisa stand together as your friends press play. Just before the light erupts once more, Mirabel glances over at you and gives a wave. You wave back, smiling. Hopefully, your contributions helped, if only a little bit. Now, it was time to see the results of your actions and finish that movie.

(Our prompt- “I didn't mean to kill her.”)

@smalltoe's writing (417 words)

The moon was a sliver of a knife blade, winking in and out of focus as dark, angry clouds swept across the sky. Streetlamps spilled pools of murky light onto the deserted street, the grass beside the road spiked with frost.The houses reached up to the sky like crooked teeth in a jagged mouth, misshapen and crumbling. The only sound that penetrated the darkness was the low whine of a lone dog limping across the road, it’s ribs protruding underneath it’s sallow, sickly skin. It’s ragged breathing was an uneven rhythm of gaps and pants, of whines for help and whines of loneliness. But somehow it knew it would not get help. Not here. Not in this part of town.
This was the part of town where people never went, unless they were desperate. The very air seeped with desolation and bleakness. Nothing good ever happened here. You could tell from just a glance at the rubble of broken bricks and rotting wood that used to be someone’s home. From just a glance at the mountains of wrappers and cans discarded on the side of the road. From just a glance at the dark, spray-painted alleyways. Just a glance at the stains no-one had ever cleaned.
Suddenly, a shout cleaved the air. A cacophony of barking followed, the lone dog scrambling across the road, tripping over its own skeletal feet, falling to the ground and not getting up again.
No-one else stirred.
But the dog’s ragged breathing continued, echoing into the night.
Gasp-pant. Gasp-pant. Gasp-pant.
Like the scrawny little dog had left it’s spirit behind to torment his place.
Gasp-pant. Gasp-pant.
Except it wasn’t the dog at all.
It was a person.
Another gleam of silver light, another crescent silver of a moon above the rooftops.
Except it wasn’t a moon at all.
Of course it wasn’t.
Not in this place.
“Please,” The whisper seemed deafening. “I didn’t mean to- It wasn’t my fault!”
The second knife-blade of a moon flashed again. Hovering above the rooftops in the hand of a shadowed figure.
Silence.
Silence.
Silence.
The world was holding its breath.
“I didn’t mean to kill her! It was an accident!” Another figure backed away from the flashing moon-blade, scrambling to the edge of the rooftop. “I-”
And she fell. Her body bending into a perfect arc, a perfect, dark, crescent moon.
The figure behind her flashing his moon of a knife, a crescent-shaped smile in the darkness.
“I didn’t mean to push you, then.”

My legs are shaking.
I am trembling in the corner of my room, hunched in the chair, sobbing.
My sleeves are soaked from my intense crying and my snot.
I can’t think straight.
My mind is driving me pure crazy.
Every now and then, people check up on me with food , water and other things to check up on me.
But i don’t eat.
And i don’t drink.
I still can’t believe it..
She’s dead..
My poor innocent , sweet, lovely sister.
Why can’t it have been someone else? Like her ex-boyfriend….
Never mind that..
But why!
My sister !
I can smell her sweet scent of perfume that she always has on…
And hear her sweet, lovely voice, trying to calm me down..
Her sweet cooking..
Lemonade, her bird chirping to her for treats…
Her voice always talking about her favourite place, paris…
Sweet, sugary cinnamon rolls…
Her delicious, homemade chocolate chip cookie dough scent on her measly old apron..
It feels so real.
But it’s not.
My mind is driving me pure crazy.
Mad.
Why..
I wish so, so , so much that she could come back to life…
Sadly not.
It’s impossible..
It’s unreal.
It’s Heart-breaking to even wake up, and not smell her hot cinnamon rolls every morning..

A little time goes by, and someone kindly comes and gives me some tasty goods.
Sweet smelling cinnamon rolls..
Just like Hers.
Reminds me a little too much..
But they are so kind..
I Really don’t deserve it.
I really don’t..
Why?

Well, a murdrer doesn’t deserve such nice goods.
All i wanted to do was protect her from him …
My mind is driving me pure crazy..
I knew what he was up to..
He was up to no good.
I trust my instincts.
Maybe a little too much..
But..
I didn’t mean to kill her..?

March 6th Daily ~
I partnered with @mynameisleafshine
Prompt: You get a summer job working as a gardener for a mysterious lady in the forest. The more you water the plants, the more secrets they let you in about her.

Sixteen year old Roxanne Mendoza looked at her phone's directions as she drove towards the house of the elderly woman who had hired her for the next few months. She had put out an ad on Instagram to see if anybody needed someone to do any odd jobs around the house for them. Roxanne had done it so she could get some extra pocket money for the summer, and because she enjoyed having stuff to do with her free time. Soon after she posted the ad, she was contacted by an elderly woman named Cecile who asked if Roxanne would be able to come to her house daily and water the plants in her garden since she was getting older and didn’t have anybody else to come and help her out.
She pulled up to the woman's house, and it was a quaint, cottage-looking house; however the only weird thing was that it was located in the middle of the forest. It was in the middle of nowhere. Though there was a really nice garden, Roxanne could tell why the woman needed help maintaining it. Especially considering she aws elderly. It looked like a garden that would take a lot of work to keep looking nice.
Roxanne got out of her car and grabbed some gardening supplies she had brought from home from the back of her trunk. She walked up to Ms. Cecile’s front door and knocked firmly. A few minutes later, the woman opened the door and smiled at me. She was an old woman with white hair pulled up into a bun on top of her head. She looked like a nice lady.
“Hello there!” Roxanne grinned “My name’s Roxanne, I’m here to help you with your plants?”
“Yes! Welcome dear!” Ms. Cecile smiled and walked me to her garden “If you could just water the plants and pull up any weeds that you see? That would be great! Thank you so much dear!” Then the woman went back inside, leaving me to my work. That was fine, I wasn’t here for conversation after all.

As I continued watering Ms. Cecile’s plants for the next few months, something weird began to happen. Whenever I watered the plants, I heard an odd whispering in my head. For the first couple of days I was sure that I was going insane. But eventually, I came to realize that the plants were speaking to me! They told me all about Ms. Cecile. She used to come out and tend to her garden every day, until her husband passed. After that, she had lost a lot of interest in her plants and started spending more time inside. She didn’t have any grandchildren that lived near her, so she was all alone now. It was honestly kind of sad, and I knew that I was going to make it my mission to help this woman while I was here. In any way that I possibly could. I was going to make sure that when I left, she was a happier person.

Word count: 419

Partner: Soki

Prompt: As the new housekeeper for a prominent wealthy family, one of your tasks is to water all of the house plants. You are watering the lilies in the entryway when one of the plants starts talking to warn you of a dark family secret.

I look at the clock in the main hall. The shorthand is close to two and the longhand is nearing three. Oh no. I’m running a bit behind. I tighten my grip on the watering can and walk quickly to the entryway. I take a deep breath, stopping by the lilies. I start watering the plants, starting with the lilies closest to the entryway when I stop and hear a small ‘psst’. I look around questioningly when my eyes fall upon a single glowing hydrangea.
“Aleva, Aleva,” the hydrangea chants my name.
“Um, hello,” I say awkwardly, crouching down, “I’ve heard of tales of talking plants, but. Wow.”
It seems to giggle. “Well, it’s just us hydrangeas. I’m more commonly referred to as Hydi. The others are well, shy.”
“Nice to meet you, Hydi,” I say, smiling.
“But please, come closer,” Hydi whispers, “There’s something you need to know of. The men of this house- How should I put it, unusual.”
“What do you mean, unusual?” I start, as I hear footsteps coming from behind and the glow from Hydi fades.
“Aleva?” a feminine voice calls from behind me, “What are you doing?”
I quickly tip my watering can forward, finishing up the last of the plants. “Watering the flowers, Mistress.” I get up and walk past Lady Cadance, who has a questioning look across her face.
“Hydi, are you trying to get rid of another one?” I hear Lady Cadance hiss behind me.
“No, my lady,” Hydi replies. I quicken my pace and go quickly to the dining room.
I spend the rest of my day finishing up chores, trying to act nonchalant. But inside my head was spinning, trying to make heads or tails of what I had heard earlier today. The next morning, I did my tasks quickly, restless and wanting answers. I got to water the plants at one, knowing that Lady Cadance would be out for tea.
“Hydi!” I whisper loudly, at the patch of hydrangeas, still feeling a bit silly.
A glow comes from the hydrangea to my left. “Aleva, why do you call upon me?”
“What did you mean yesterday?” I ask, “About the men, I mean. They don’t seem that out of ordinary. And the conversation you had with Lady Cadance. That was a bit odd.”
Hydi’s glow seemed to fade and came back. “It’s almost time. Keep watch, stay on your toes. That’s all I’ll be able to tell you.” The glow fades, leaving me with the chirping of birds.

SWC WEEKLY #1

YAYYY I FINISHED

TOTAL: 2,727 WORDS

Part 1: Poetry (495 words)

Poem 1 (Didactic Poetry)

Greed
Eyes gleam with longing
For the promised rewards to come
Blinded by foolish fantasies
Of mere illusions

Your greed is like a wildfire
It spreads and spreads and spreads
Destructive in its reach
Incapable of being curbed

One day, that blaze will have spread to every corner
And every last stretch will have felt its hazardous wrath
In its wake, lay the broken remnants
Of the dreams you once believed in
Gone to the wind like the smoke that vanishes into the air

And one day you’ll realize
What a mistake it was
To let your greed mislead you
And to believe in those foolish fantasies

Poem 2 (Limerick)

Sweater
Remember that sweater I got last spring?
The ugly monstrosity that smelled like burning,
met its fate last week being run over by my dad
And while I should probably be sad
It feels more like a blessing

Poem 3 (Haiku):

The Sea
Crashing of the waves
Beating against weathered sand
Lulling me to sleep

Poem 4 (Sestina):
(I used a random word generator for this one so it doesn't really make sense idk…)

The Farmer
A single bar of chocolate
Harvested by the cacao farmer
Worthy of celebration
Along with fresh baked bread
Reminds me of my youth
And all those weekends spent at the mall

The magnificent grandeur of the mall
Is matched by a forgotten bar of chocolate
Evoking memories of my youth
And it all comes back to the cacao farmer
Who bakes fresh bread
But forgotten in times of celebration

Good times call for celebration
As everyone heads to the mall
While the fresh baked bread
And the rich, dark chocolate
Are forgotten by everyone but the farmer
So alone, he eats and is transported to his youth

People’s memories of their youth
Are filled with good times of celebration
Completely devoid of the cacao farmer
Instead replaced by meaningless excursions to the mall
Everyone has forgotten about the chocolate
And the soft, pillowy bread

The forgotten bread
Reminiscent of his youth
Ah, and the wonderful chocolate
Yet whenever there is a celebration
Everyone says “Let’s go to the mall!”
And off they go, ignorant of the farmer

In his empty house, remains the farmer
Left to bake his own bread
While all the children are at the mall
Making memories of their youth
Full of partying and celebration
Never experiencing the delightful taste of chocolate

The mall is where they choose to celebrate
While the farmer is chooses to reminisce on his youth
Left alone to make his own chocolate, bake his own bread

Poem 5 (Free Verse):

Summer
We lick our ice cream cones with glee
And splash in the cool waves
Immersed in our own world of fun and happiness

The summer heat calls for a dip in the lake
As watch the sunset along the horizon
Immersed in our own world of fun and happiness

Yet good times are like the sunset
It rises and it sets, until it can no longer be enjoyed
We try to hold onto it as long as we can
But ultimately escapes
Leaving us with nothing more
Than memories of the once good times

Part 2: Essay (536 words)

Should cooking classes be taught in schools?
For many kids, being in the kitchen serves as a way to express themselves. Many more liberal subjects like art and music are already being taught in schools. So why not offer cooking courses at schools? Cooking can be a way for children to try new foods and create something of their own. Besides being a creative outlet, learning to cook can also offer important life skills. By learning to prepare meals and cleanup after themselves, students can learn to be more self-sufficient and responsible. By teaching children about nutrition and a healthy diet, schools can help children live a more healthy lifestyle. According to the World Health Organization, obesity has become a prevalent problem in the United States. About 17% of all U.S. children are obese. Experts believe that this rise in health problems is largely due to a growing reliance on processed foods and large serving portions. Now, more than ever, the need for schools to provide food and nutrition classes is becoming more and more necessary.
One of the major arguments against specialized cooking classes is the lack of specialized teachers. Many people argue that schools don’t have qualified teachers to teach cooking classes. However, there is a simple fix. Instead of hiring more teachers and cutting into existing teachers’ salaries, schools could simply train their own teachers on food courses. After all, the numerous benefits that come from cooking classes are enough to outweigh the challenges. When children are offered cooking courses, they get hands-on experience of working in the kitchen. Recent studies published by the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics proves that when children engage in handling foods, it leads to a greater acceptance of eating a variety of foods. For parents who are always trying to force their picky children to try new foods, this would be especially helpful. Cooking classes at school could also play a role in developing important life skills in children. For example, working in the kitchen teaches children responsibility, time management, self-confidence from making a meal, and communication skills through working with others. Not to mention the nutrition students gain. Many children tend to turn to processed foods for snacks. By teaching students basic cooking skills, they can learn to cook their own healthy snacks. Teaching children about nutrition plays a key role in developing a healthy lifestyle in the lives of children. In fact, children ate more fruits and vegetables after participating in culinary classes, researchers say. All in all, cooking classes provide students with so many benefits, including creativity, better health, responsibility, and much more, which is why schools need to start implementing culinary courses.
Overall, the immense number of benefits students receive out of cooking classes is enough to outweigh all the disadvantages. Especially with the United States’ current health crisis, promoting a healthy lifestyle in children could be the key to reversing this predicament. Culinary classes also offer so many other benefits that could prove useful to children in the long run. For instance, being able to express themselves in the kitchen, responsibility, and social skills from working with fellow chefs. Through culinary classes, schools are paving the path to a brighter, healthier future ahead of us.

Part 3: Script Writing (819 words)

The orphanage stood with a dismal air. Its faded gray facade appeared to be frowning and a joyless, dejected sigh seemed to escape its cracked steps. In what was normally a happy town, the orphanage cast a shadow over the pedestrians in Seabrook—those who were trying to enjoy a peaceful morning, but were restrained by the depressing atmosphere of the orphanage. Ms. Yang’s Orphanage for Lost Children to be exact.
But what about the people inside, you may ask? Well, inside was just as miserable as the outside, if not more. Inside, one girl was feeling especially somber on this especially somber day. Penny Yang was her name.
Penny sat by the dusty windowsill of the orphanage. Her view from the top floor faced the street on which the orphanage was located. Yet her mind was elsewhere. Thoughts from earlier that morning replayed in her head. The sneering voices of the orphanage children poisoned her thoughts.
“You don’t belong here.”
“Loser.”
“Freak.”
“Go back where you came from.”
Penny was used to the childrens’ constant insults. Their bitterness was a sad effect of the grief from losing their parents. It was a feeling that all the orphanage children shared. Yet as much as she sympathized with them, it was hard not to be angry at them. It was hard to be angry at people who were always bullying her. The constant torrent of hurtful words was enough to drive someone crazy.
When Penny was a baby, her parents had died mysteriously. No one ever found out why. Penny had no other living relatives, so the judges had no choice but to send her to Ms. Yang’s Orphanage for Lost Children. Now, Penny was thirteen. Over the years, she had come to accept the fact that the orphanage was her home, despite how miserable she was there. For any child to lose their parents was hard enough. But for Penny, it was even harder. Not knowing how her parents had died was perhaps the hardest part. The broken pieces of her past continued to haunt her.
Breaking free from her gloomy thoughts, Penny decided to focus once more on the view from the window. She recognized a few walkers, people who had visited the orphanage over the 12 years she had lived there. Yet another pedestrian caught her eye. She wasn’t dressed in the typical coat and pants you would expect someone to wear on a cold morning. Instead, she was dressed in completely the opposite, with a neon green tank top and green athletic shorts. Her tall stature and the colors of her outfit almost made her look like a neon green pickle. Penny smiled to herself at the thought, once more distracting herself from the street outside. Because when Penny looked back, the mysterious woman was gone.
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
“Penny?” called Ms. Lambert, the director of the orphanage. “You have a visitor.”
Now that caught Penny’s attention. A visitor? That wasn’t something that happened every day. Excitement bubbled up in Penny, although she wasn’t the only one who was excited. Ms. Lambert seemed especially chipper today. Her heart raced as Ms. Lambert led Penny down the stairs. In the lobby, Penny almost gasped. There, waiting in one of the chairs, was the same woman she had seen earlier—the one in the green athletic clothes.
She smiled warmly at Penny. “Hello, are you Penny?”
Penny nodded hesitantly. She was always cautious around strangers.
“Good, good.” She beckoned at Penny to sit.
Penny took a seat across from the pickle lady. Yes, that was what Penny had decided to call her.
“I’m Jessica Wang by the way,” the lady added.
Penny smiled faintly. She didn’t know what to say to that. She wasn’t used to conversing with other people.
“Well Penny, I have to get back by lunchtime so let me tell you why I’m really here,” said Jessica.
Anticipation surged through Penny. She was dying to know what Jessica was talking about. She paused to take a manila envelope out of her bag.
“I am the director of admissions from the Seabrook Academy of Fine Arts and Learning. Have you heard of the Seabrook Academy?”
Penny shook her head, although her interest was piqued. An academy for art and learning?
Jessica smiled. “Well, it's a very prestigious academy for grades eight through twelve that only takes a small percent of kids all around the country. And you, Penny, are one of those children selected for this academy.”
At first, Penny could not process the idea. Just five minutes ago, she had been the most miserable girl on Earth and now she was being selected to join a prestigious academy?
“But how?” was the best Penny managed to say.
“We’ve seen your test scores in both writing and math and you scored exceptionally high in all subjects. We’re impressed by your creative ability as well,” replied Jessica.
Penny was at a loss for words, but Ms. Lambert stepped in. Penny had forgotten she was even there. “I’m so excited and I’m sure Penny is too. How do we apply?”
Jessica opened the manila envelope. Inside were several stacks of paper.
“These are the admission forms. I’ll be back in a few days to pick them up. We’ve also decided to grant Penny a full scholarship, so all the expenses are already taken care of,” Jessica stated.
“Oh my, a scholarship too! Well Penny, what do you say?” Ms. Lambert asked.
This time Penny knew exactly what to say.
“I’d love to go,” she said, smiling.
“Perfect! Well Penny, I’ll see you in a few days,” Jessica said, gathering her stuff.
Right before she opened the door, Jessica turned around.
“Oh, and Penny,” she said, “Welcome to Seabrook Academy.”

(I ended up extending the story in the script because it wasn't long enough)

Characters:
Penny Yang: 13-year old girl who lives at an orphanage

CHILDREN:
They sweep into the room where PENNY is sitting, grinning cruelly.

CHILD 1:
Loser, you don’t belong here.

CHILD 2:
Go back where you came from.

CHILD 3:
Freak!

NARRATOR:
PENNY stares dejectedly at them. She is used to their constant bullying. The CHILDREN continue to push and shove PENNY until she runs out of the room.

Later….

NARRATOR:
PENNY is sitting in her room, a few tears streaming down her face.

PENNY:
“Why? Why do they keep doing this to me?” PENNY continues staring miserably out the window.

NARRATOR:
Suddenly, there is a knock at the door.

PENNY:
She quickly wipes the tears from her face. “Who is it?”

MS. LAMBERT (standing outside the door):
Penny? A visitor wants to see you.

PENNY:
Straightens up with interest. She walks to open the door.

MS. LAMBERT:
Beckons at PENNY. They walk off stage.

NARRATOR:
PENNY and MS. LAMBERT are in the lobby of the orphanage. There is a mysterious visitor.

PENNY:
Walks into the room. JESSICA is sitting on one of the chairs.

JESSICA (smiling):
Good morning Penny. How are you?

PENNY:
Shifts uncomfortably. “Good.”

JESSICA:
You’re probably wondering who I am. I’m Jessica Wang by the way.
Awkward silence.

MS. LAMBERT (clears throat):
So, Jessica, why don’t you tell us why you’re here? You mentioned something about a school?

PENNY:
Looks curiously at JESSICA. “School?”

JESSICA (smiles once more):
Ah, yes. I suppose I’d better tell you why I’m really here. I have a meeting at noon, so I’d better hurry. Anyways, I’m the director of admissions at Seabrook Academy. Do you know what that is?

PENNY:
Shakes her head. “No.”

JESSICA:
Well, it's a very prestigious academy, especially for the arts.

PENNY (in shock):
Why me?

JESSICA:
We’ve seen your test score in both math and writing. You scored exceptionally high in both of them.

PENNY:
Oh

MS. LAMBERT:
So, this school of yours. Is it free?

JESSICA:
Well, normally you would have to pay tuition and everything. But, we’ve decided to grant Penny a full scholarship because of her gifted ability.

MS. LAMBERT (looks relieved):
Oh my! That certainly is generous.

NARRATOR:
Meanwhile, PENNY hadn’t said a word. She was still struggling to process all this information. Just a few moments ago, she had been the unhappiest girl on Earth. And now, she was being offered a place at a prestigious academy? On full scholarship? It was all too much.

MS. LAMBERT:
So, how do we register?

JESSICA:
JESSICA takes out a manilla envelope from her bag. She hands it to MS. LAMBERT. “These are the registration forms.”

MS. LAMBERT:
Nods her head. “Okay, wonderful.”

JESSICA:
I’ll be back in a few days to pick them up.

PENNY:
Will I be living there?

JESSICA:
Yes, the dorms are on-campus.

NARRATOR:
Penny and Ms. Lambert ponder that for a while. They are not sure how they feel about sending Penny off to boarding school for the first time. JESSICA sees their concerned faces.

JESSICA (asks PENNY):
Are you okay with that?

PENNY:
PENNY straightens up, looking determined. “I can do it.”

JESSICA (looking pleased):
Perfect! I’ll be back in a few days to pick up your paperwork.

MS. LAMBERT:
Thank you so much Jessica.

PENNY (smiles):
Thank you.

JESSICA:
JESSICA stands up and heads for the door. She looks back at PENNY. “Oh, and Penny,” JESSICA pauses. “Welcome to Seabrook Academy.”

Later….

NARRATOR:
It has been three days since JESSICA’S visit. Penny is sitting in the common room when the ORPHANAGE CHILDREN saunter in.

CHILDREN (sneering):
So, off to boarding school huh? Have fun there, loser.

PENNY:
PENNY looks at them confidently. She raises her eyebrows. Yeah, maybe I will. PENNY walks out of the room, leaving the CHILDREN gaping in surprise.

NARRATOR:
Later that afternoon, Penny is sitting in the car with MS. LAMBERT. They are driving to Seabrook Academy to meet JESSICA.

MS. LAMBERT:
So, Penny, you excited?

PENNY:
Yes.

MS. LAMBERT:
Look at you! All grown up off to boarding school. I still remember when you were still a baby…

PENNY (embarrassed):
Heh.

MS. LAMBERT (pulling into the gates of Seabrook Academy):
Well, be sure to call when you need me.

PENNY (steps out of the car):
I will, of course!

MS. LAMBERT gives one final wave as she drives off.

JESSICA:
JESSICA is waiting on the lawn. She waves at PENNY. “Hello!”

PENNY:
Hi.

JESSICA:
JESSICA beckons at PENNY. “Come on, I’ll show you around and then you can get settled into your dorm.” PENNY follows JESSICA off stage.

NARRATOR:
Thus begins the dawn of new beginnings for PENNY as she journeys into this new chapter of her life.

Curtain closes. Audience applauds.

Part 4: Non-fiction Writing (877 words)

The Art of Cake Baking (Informative)

To some people, baking a cake is just throwing random ingredients together and trying not to burn it in the oven. However, other people like to think of cake baking as an art—the perfect blend of science and creativity. Cake baking, or any baking in general, requires lots of precision. Especially with baking a cake, measuring out the ingredients calls for lots of exactness. The correct ratio of ingredients will ensure the perfect taste and texture of your cake. Of course, there are also several other factors to consider. When mixing your ingredients, be careful not to over mix them. If you overmix your batter, you are incorporating too much air into your batter, leading to a dry cake. The next tip is quite obvious already. You have to make sure to cook your cake for just the right number of minutes. Otherwise, you get an under baked cake which is much too gooey, or an over baked cake which is much too dry. Getting the temperature of the oven right and the number of minutes you bake it is crucial to getting a perfectly baked cake.
Now, onto the fun part: decorating. Once your cakes have cooled in the oven, take them out and let them cool. Once they have cooled down for a few minutes inside the cake tin, the cakes are ready to be transferred to a cooling rack. Now, this step is vitally important for decorating cakes: you must make sure your cakes are completely cooled before frosting your cakes. If you apply frosting to your cakes when they are even slightly warm, the frosting will melt right off! Of course, no one wants that so be sure to get them to room temperature before decorating them. I also recommend using a cake leveler when stacking your cakes, to make sure that the cake will not turn out lopsided once they are stacked. The consistency of your frosting is also very important. If your frosting is too thin, it will be harder to achieve that smooth surface on your cake. However, if your frosting is too thick, it will be very hard to spread. Also, when decorating your cakes, it is important to apply a crumb coat beforehand. How to do this? Apply a thin layer of frosting around your cake before, then let it rest for about thirty minutes. This is to make sure that crumbs will not get mixed into the frosting as you are spreading it onto your cake. Although it may seem hard, the art of cake baking is really just science, precision, and creativity. By following directions and measuring things carefully, you are one step closer to creating a perfect cake! (450 words)

A Day in the Life of a Middle School Student (Narrative)

If there is one word I would use to describe middle school, its stress. This might just be me, as I tend to worry a lot about things I shouldn’t. Sometimes the stress is good, it helps me be more productive. But sometimes, the stress is just nerve wracking
I usually wake up around 6:00 in the morning. I’m generally not a morning person, but school has ruined my sleep schedule. Then I get ready, eat breakfast, and pack my lunch, until it is time to leave for school.
Before the bell rings, I hang out with my friends and wait for the teacher to come. During PE, I run the mile, which is my least favorite part of PE. Band is a much lighter strain, as we rehearse for the upcoming concert and learn more about music theory. If I could choose a favorite subject, it would probably be English. First, because I love writing and second, we get to read and analyze interesting books and literature pieces. Math, on the other hand, is quite boring and science as well. During math, I’m practically falling asleep because it is so boring.
One of my least favorite things about middle school are the tests, especially history tests. I hate the anxiety of taking a test and afterwards, worrying about your grades. But other than sheer boredom and lots of tests, there are a few highlights of my day. Laughing with my friends, meeting new people, playing games with my table partners during class. It all makes the stress and homework worth it. And then, it's already time to go home. As I walk across the street, carrying my instrument, my lunch, and a heavy backpack full of books, I can not wait to get home and check the SWC daily. SWC has been one of the things I have been looking forward to every day when I get home. After school, I usually rush or procrastinate on my homework just so I can do the SWC daily. Some days after school I have extra curricular activities. Golf, piano, STEM club meetings. And of course, procrastination! I find that on the days I am busier, I tend to be more productive. When there is less time allotted to me, I am much more likely to finish my work faster. Some days when I don’t have any activities, I end up spending lots of time on my homework because I get sidetracked. In the evening, I normally write or read, ending my chaotic day on a peaceful note. (427 words)

March 6th Main Cabin daily (w/ @Dawn_Camps :)
Prompt: The sound of laughter drifted up from the street below, making him feel very alone in this new town.
I recommend playing this with Experience by Daniel Hope, I Virtuosi Italiani, and Ludovico Einaudi in the background.

~~~
The sound of laughter drifted up from the street below, making him feel very alone in this new town.
Of course, it was expected for this was his first night in his new house after getting kicked out of his old apartment for ‘disturbing the peace,’ whatever that meant.
Nearly everything was foreign about it from the way the air smelled to the way the people dressed. Heck, even the way the stars shined in the night sky felt new to him, something he didn't even know was possible until that moment. Although still visible, they looked even more faded than when he last took the time to stare at their beauty. It was depressing.
He rested his arms on a metal fence and leaned over the barrier of the rundown urban building and stared at the people talking and dancing and overall, having the time of their lives. The way they were so close embracing each other with warm smiles made his heart ache and tears well up in his eyes, and he never felt the want to be included this strongly ever in his life. To be hugged, to be held, to dance with people he might never have talked to otherwise. The crave was so strong he thought about jumping off the balcony to join them.
“Hey! Come here!” Down on the street, a woman suddenly looked up at him and smiled, waving enthusiastically. He smiled back, giving a small wave in return when he heard a voice to his side.
“I'm almost ready, just give me a moment!” To his right, a man was quickly brushing some last minute touches to his makeup, apparently not noticing the random person residing on his balcony. He snapped the makeup container closed and put it on the table outside before ducking back inside, closing the door behind him.
His heart sank. This was why he could never make any friends. Without even a glance, he was ignored, forgotten, and stepped over without another word. No one even acknowledged his existence.
Maybe being dead had something to do with it.
Daily! done w/ @criminal-intent as my partner
“Checkmate,” I said with satisfaction, moving my rook into position as I surveyed the black-and-white chessboard. My queen and bishop were in position, with a knight and pawn in the corner protecting my king. I could hardly believe it. After six months, each Saturday spent at the park playing Joe, I had finally, finally beat him. It felt good.
The nice old man who had hardly said anything during the game, simply smiling enigmatically while he sipped his seemingly unending cup of coffee, nodded at me in an uncharacteristically sharp movement. “Finally,” Joe said, setting down his mug on the rough, wooden picnic table. “Good luck.” With a wink, he disappeared.
I mean, disappeared. Into thin air. Gone.
“What the—?” I yelped, jumping to my feet, along with screeching a few choice words that my mom would have definitely grounded me for saying. But I was surprised. Shocked.
It isn’t every day your chess partner dissolves out of existence.
Suddenly, my neck prickling, I felt eyes on my back. When I turned, however, no one was there. All I could see were sturdy tree trunks and branches swaying cheerily in the wind. I turned back to Joe’s seat. He was still gone. Shaking my head, I closed my eyes and pinched my leg, hard.
Opening them, I saw that Joe was still nowhere to be found.
What on God’s green Earth?
Reaching out, I touched his coffee mug. Still warm.
I realized I was breathing heavily and, running a hand through my spiky hair, I took a deep breath. My hands were shaking.
“Oh my gosh,” I said, “Oh my gosh.” Glancing at my watch, I saw it wasn’t even half past nine. Mom would definitely notice something was up if I came back so early. But what else could I do? Just walk around the park, slowly going crazy because Joe had literally disappeared in front of my eyes? Yeah, okay, I’d probably go crazy either way. I probably was crazy.
Wiping my still-trembling hands on my jeans, trying to steady myself, I shook my head. This couldn’t be happening. This couldn’t have happened. I was dreaming, whatever the results of my pinch-test had said to the contrary.
Good luck, Joe’s words echoed in my head.
What the heck was that supposed to mean? What was I supposed to do with that? Go become the world’s best chess player or something? Did it have anything to do with Joe’s disappearance?
Good luck. What kind of crazy, useless advice was that? Before your chess teacher melts out of existence, he’s supposed to say something wise and helpful, like Obi-wan or something. Use the force, Luke.
Well, I was definitely going crazy.
Nervously, I snatched up my tattered blue backpack and slung it over one shoulder. With a final, furtive glance around the deserted clearing, I took a steadying breath and turned along the path to the playground, the way back home.
Good luck. I guess I’d need it.
Because I had a feeling—a horrible, creeping feeling—that my life was just about to change. And I doubted it was going to be for the better.
DAILY #6
Prompt: Every Saturday you spend at the park playing chess against a nice, old man. Today, you beat him for the first time. You smile at him triumphantly until he says, “Finally! Good luck,” and dissolves.
375 words
As I exited the park, I felt a presence. Dark clouds had covered the sun. I tucked my hands into my hoodie pocket. A cold wind shook the leaves in the nearby trees. Fallen needles crunched under my feet as I headed home. What was I supposed to do?
The old man had seemed to indicate that I was ready for whatever was about to happen. But what was that? And how did finally beating him at chess mean I was ready? Or maybe I wasn’t, and the man was playing a trick on me. But something told me that there was something bigger on the horizon. My dad had, just this morning, told me that he was proud of me. My mom had a faraway look in her eyes when she hugged me before I went on my normal Saturday walk. At first, I’d thought nothing of their actions.
But now…something was wrong. It wasn’t just that the old man who played chess with me had disappeared in front of my face. Just faded away into nothingness. That wasn’t all. The presence was there, hovering above me.
I broke into a run, trying to leave the feeling behind. My long brown hair flew free of my hood and tangled around my head. Though my breath came in gasps and my legs began to ache, I pressed on.
I needed to tell my parents about the old man who I’d played chess with every Saturday that I could remember. Ask them to help me.
Suddenly, I stopped. The air had shifted. Not just the breeze going in a different direction, but the feeling, the emotion of the air. It seemed to me that if I turned around someone would be standing there. Taking a few deep breaths, I swiveled around suddenly.
But there was no one there. I breathed a sigh of relief, and turned to continue heading home. Maybe there was no reason to be worried.
As I looked up, though, a figure stepped out from behind a house. His face was a shadow, with no definition except two white beams in the place of eyes. I felt a scream rip free of my lips.
“Bel, we’ve been waiting for you!” the figure cackled.
“I've got you a summer job!” Mom yells from the kitchen as I scroll on my phone.
I jump out of bed and head downstairs, praying that it isn't something embarrassing like working at a fast food restaurant.
“There's a nice old lady a mile from here who needs a gardener to water her flowers,” Mom says. “The schedule is every day from 3 - 6 pm.”
Who has that many flowers that they need someone to water them for 3 hours? I wonder to myself
“I'll take it,” I say, despite my doubts.
“It starts today,” Mom says.
“What?” I exclaim, but she's already heading out to the car.
I sigh and have no choice but to follow.
We arrive at the tiny cottage at exactly 3:00 pm, and an odd looking woman who appears to be in her eighties. She's wearing a straw hat with beautiful lilacs and roses, and a flower patterned sun dress. Her boots are light brown and perfect for outdoors. Her skin is wrinkled, but despite that, she looks… happy.
My mom waves as she leaves us, and now i'm alone with a stranger.
“Come right this way,” she says with a smile, and we venture across a hill. Beyond that hill is her garden.
I stare in shock. It's a stretch of land, 3 times bigger than my house, bordered with a white fence. The grass is a lush, bright green, and there's a beige colored windmill just beyond the flowers. The flowers themselves are breathtaking. At least 10 long rows of rainbow colored arranged flowers, all of different varieties.
“What did you say your name was, dear?” she asks me.
“Charlotte,” I reply.
“Well then, you'd better get started,” she says. “There's a hose near the house that's as long as you need.”
Then she walks off.
I sigh and wander to the back of her house, grabbing the hose and wondering how it's possible that someone finds a hose that's 800 feet long.
Aside from that, the experience is strangely relaxing. The flowers have a calming aroma, and the rhythmic noises of water are like music. The flowers shine in the sun after being watered, and as i'm about halfway through I hear a sound in my head.
I pause. It's a soft and quiet melody and I have to turn off the hose to hear it.
It almost sounds like the flowers are speaking to me.
To test my theory, I bend down next to one, and the music gets louder.
The flowers tell the tale of the woman, and how for years she's tended to the flowers. They tell me how each of them represent a loved one in her life, and she's the last one left.
I wipe a tear from my eye, not even realizing that I had started almost crying.
“That's so… sad,” I wonder aloud, and continue watering.
Once i'm at the end, there's a big flower. It's the color of a midnight sky, and as i squint, there's a note:
“To my beloved granddaughter”
I make sure to water it carefully.
Now that all the flowers are done, I head off to the lady and try not to show any emotion.
She thanks me for watering them and hands me a rose of my own to plant.
As my mom arrives and we drive away, I realize that this is just the summer job I needed.
third of weekly (im skipping the essay part for now haha)
script
Im using one of my weeklies from swc in november I think lol I just read it and it's so bad.
lol wasn't sure if I was supoosed to link it or not, but im assuming I should so here
(I would be basing this off of the fourth part of th weekly of course)
anyways here's the script! ^^ (928 words)
KATHRYN'S BOSS inaudibly talks to someone on the phone while KATHRYN waits outside the door.
KATHRYN'S BOSS
Come In.
He sets his phone down and look up from his desk as Kathryn walks in
KATHRYN
You asked for me sir…
She meets his eyes nervously.
KATHRYN'S BOSS
I have a small job for you.
He stands up and walks slowly towards KATHRYN
KATHRYN takes a step back intimidated.
KATHRYN
Yes…
KATHRYN'S BOSS
The rebel's have started to gain a strong foothold against me. I need you to blow up they're base before they become an even bigger threat to us.
KATHRYN looks down at the floor. This was what she had been afraid of.
KATHRYN
Are you sure you have no one else for the job…
KATHRYN'S BOSS
In fact I do… But you've become soft. I need you to learn that no job will be done without a little bit of killing.
His words hit KATHRYN hard, but she still looks up at him determined.
KATHRYN
What if I told you I wouldn't do it?
KATHRYN'S BOSS glares at her but, she keeps eye contact
KATHRYN'S BOSS
Then say goodbye to your precious family.
KATHRYN'S eye's widen. She didn't expect him to go so far!
KATHRYN
But…
KATHRYN'S BOSS
Go!
KATHRYN
But…
KATHRYN'S BOSS
Go Now!
KATHRYN quickly nods then turns and quickly heads out the door
KATHRYN'S BOSS sits back down.
KATHRYN heads to her house where she finds a satchel and note on a table. She picks up the satchel and feels inside. She takes out a small bomb. She gulps and puts it back inside the satchel. She unfolds the note and starts to read it. She recognizes her boss's handwriting. The note tells her to follow a small handrawn map to the rebel's hideout. Underneath says that the bomb will detonate 3 seconds after being placed. That was when KATHRYN realized that the real reason her boss had sent her was because he wanted to get rid of her. 3 seconds wasn't enough time to escape after placing the bomb. Still had no choice if she wanted to protect her family.
KATHRYN
I have to see my family one last time…
KATHRYN gets on her horse and rides towards her families house. She gets to her family's small cabin only to see it in flames. She falls to her knees. Glancing up she say a small black box KATHRYN knew hadn't been there before. KATHRYN picks it up. Inside is another note from her boss. Tears fil KATHRYN'S eyes as she read the words, The rebels did this as an attempt to strike against us. I couldn't stop them. KATHRYN balls up the paper in her hand and throws it into the flames. She then get's back on her horse ready to make the rebels pay for what they did to her family, the only things she cared about. Little did she know her boss was the one who actually killed her family. KATHRYN follows the map towards the rebel's hideout. Suddenly an arrow flies through the air and hits her horse. KATHRYN rolls of onto the ground. A teenage girl walks out from behind a tree. Beside her is a younger girl. They appear to be sisters.
OLDER SISTER
Who are you?
She takes a step towards KATHRYN
KATHRYN
No one… Who are you?
OLDER SISTER pauses for a minute then looks KATHRYN up and down. She seems to decide she is safe.
OLDER SISTER
I'm Rachel. This is my younger sister Kora.
She gestures towards the younger of the two.
KORA
Hi… Im sorry my sister shot your horse.
She walks forward to help KATHRYN up. She extends her hand then stops short. KORA looks at the badge marking whom she works for. She then quickly backs away
KATHRYN
What's the matter?
KORA ignores her and looks up at her sister.
KORA
Rachel… She's one of… well them.
Rage crosses of RACHEL'S face.
RACHEL
Kora.. Bind her. We'll take her with us
KORA reluctantly nods and then goes over to bind KATHRYN. RACHEL then gets onto her own horse. KORA put KATHRYN on another horse and then gets on behind her.
KORA
I'm sorry…
She looks down at KATHRYN with a guilty look on her face. Soon RACHEL gets ahead of KORA'S horse.
KATHRYN
Look… Kora… I promise I won't hurt you, but I can't be captured. Please… When we get to your hideout could you at least unbind me?
KORA
My sister will kill me…
KATHRYN
Please…
KORA glances over at her sister.
KORA
I… Okay fine… Just please leave as soon as I unbind you. Don't use this as a chance to… Do something.
KATHRYN nods.
KATHRYN
Of course not.
KATHRYN feels a little bit guilty knowing she is using KORA to her advantage. She still knows what she has to do. The horse stops. KATHRYN can see the gateway to the rebel's hideout. KORA slides down off of her horse and KATHRYN slides down after her. KORA looks over at her sister who is digging in her pocket for keys. KORA quickly undoes my binds.
KORA
There, you're free. Now please leave here quickly. I can say you ran away.
KATHRYN
I'm sorry, but I can't do that…
KORA
What do you mean…?
KATHRYN
I have a job to do.
KATHRYN breaks for the gate. RACHEL screams something while KORA'S eyes widen. KATHRYN removes the bomb from her satchel and places it on the gate. She closes her eyes. 3… 2… 1… A scream. An explosion.
