I've been using 000webhost (not including this slight downtime/interim time on elfin8er's domain) and am pretty happy with them. The only things I have been unhappy with is the lack of free support for python/ruby on rails. But that's not the problem, the problem was with the domain registrar, not the web host.
In the event that I could afford a paid plan I'd go somewhere else, but you can't beat the price.
I like 000webhost because of MySQL, PHP, and really good file manager.

What do people use Ruby on Rails for that PHP can't do?
I have a personal distaste for the syntax of PHP. I've used python for desktop applications and never been able to try ruby, but if they're a better alternative to PHP I'd rather use them.

We'll be coming back up shortly, I just need to configure everything to our temporary hosting from elfin8er.

If your domain name is no longer working it probably means that it has been suspended for a while and might even be cancelled. It has been suspended because it did not get the required 25 hits in the last 90 days.

If the domain name is still in your My Dot TK account you can opt to buy the domain.
Converting your Free Domain into a Paid Domain provides many benefits to you such as DNS Service and legal licensee rights.

So that you know, a Free Domain is automatically expired when it does not receive the required minimum of 25 unique visitors during the previous 90 day period.
So yeah. Hit counter next time!

How could that be the issue? We had over 100 unique visitors within the last month.
When I'm in a better mood (AKA the site is back up) I'll post a breakdown of the data we collected over the one month of service.
@Elfin8er: I got them, I'll begin uploading tomorrow. Finals and stuff to cram for.

We're back! With the new domain… schedule.16skittles.tk
So no change.
After receiving the email about the dot.tk ambassador program, I quickly fired back a rage response. I got an automatic reply saying that my message would be responded to within three business days. After a few emails back and forth, I received this message from them:
Dot TK Support replied:
Hi there,

Please don't accuse us of stealing when a problem is caused by something that is YOUR responsibility.
Your domain is no longer working because you allowed it to expire on May 30th. Because it was still free, I’ve restored the domain to your account with a new expiration date one month from today. Because your domain has been disabled, you will have to check and re-enter your URL and DNS settings in your domain panel.

Your domain name previously appeared as for paid registration only because we needed to protect your expired domain name from registration by others in the so called ‘grace period’ in which you can recover your expired domain name.

Please make sure that you renew your domain (from your my.dot.tk domain panel) on time to prevent problems like this from occurring in the future.

I have also removed you from the ambassador program.

Kind regards,

Dot TK Support
So that's the supposed events that happened.
I'll say that I never knew that renewal was necessary at any time (something that I probably should have received an email about) as that's just never something that crossed my mind. It probably should have, but I likely registered the domain a long time ago and never really paid attention. However, there are a few things that Dot.TK could have done better.
  • Send a notice before the cancellation of domain. It should seem simple: if you want people to continue using your service, don't arbitrarily take it away without a notification. Had I received a notice that I needed to renew my domain, there never would have been an issue.
  • Send a notice after the cancellation of a domain. I just refreshed the page and it was gone. Nowhere in my inbox or on dot.tk could I find an explanation for why my domain was gone or that it had ever been mine in the first place.
  • Don't redirect my domain to advertisements. I understand that as a free registrar, there must be some way to bring in profits. But not only does redirecting unsuspecting people trying to use my services tarnish my reputation, but that's the kind of thing that makes people post anti-dot.tk rants on the internet. tarnishing your reputation. It's a lose-lose. I avoid using advertisements like the plague. I'll sell you my program sooner than I'll sell your eyes to another company. Or even, put up a splash page that says "this user has not renewed his or her domain. If this domain belongs to you, please renew it at *web site url here* and put some banner ads on there.

Also, my accusation of “stealing” the domain was based not only upon my own experiences but if you search “dot tk scam” there are many others with a similar issue. Perhaps they've had the same problem as me, just didn't choose to go through support? Either way, with knowledge of some people claiming their domains stolen, it was natural to throw myself in the same boat.

HOWEVER:
Despite these three complaints of what Dot TK could have done better for its customers, I will say this. Customer service was pretty good, actually. I sent an email on Friday afternoon. I was greeted with an automated response telling me that my email was received and would be handled within 3 business days. While I have no clue if that goal was met in their timezone (Central European Summer Time) it was four business days in mine. (still a pretty nice response time IMO) From there it was just one day for the entire thing to be resolved with only one question: “what was the domain in question?”
I hereby retract most of the criticism of Dot.TK that I spewed in this thread. I'd still recommend buying a domain in a more common TLD (.com, .net) but I wouldn't tell people to specifically avoid .tk. Still, maybe they'll take some of the criticism from this post and implement it. Probably not, but here's hoping?

That's weird, because I always set my renewal period to 12 months, and I receive an email a few weeks before it's set to be cancelled, and I simply renew the domain if I still need it, and it's all ok

Glad dot.tk seems to be improving though

No, sorry, I'll remove my files from your servers tomorrow, or if you want to do it you can.

Thanks! Sorry about the issue you had with your AV blocking access, though.

Alright, pushed the new update. It shouldn't feature many (if any) visual changes for the user, mostly optimization and cleaning of code (preparing for github) as well as administrative and debugging tools.
