See? Our layout looks like MacOS!
I don't see a problem with our app dock so far.
And the fact that you can change the place where the nav bar can be as well is good as well!
Why does almost every advanced scratch OS look like Mac (I mean..rounded + nav on bottom)?
Out of all of those..I like Fabricon the best, simplicity along with originality is key.

For starters historically speaking Linux was used by developers, people in IT, geeks, etc… This was mostly due to the command line nature of Linux. Hence it never got a foothold in the general user base with whom we all interact on a daily basis.

For an average user, he is happy as long is able to do perform basic tasks of word processing, web browsing, etc. And probably no one would be interested if we say that you can do the same things in Linux but you need to type in some commands & do this-that. And for developers many prefer macOS because macOS has many Linux features due to the fact that they are both based off Unix (even though X is not Unix).

The Software is actual garbage -
It does not have a native package manager.
It cannot connect to an NTFS HDD or an Android Phone and start File Transfers.
Basic multitasking is *, even Cmd-Tab doesn’t work as intended!
It has close to negligible customization. Apple wants almost all control over the Software and Hardware!
Apple doesn’t give a single hoot about backward compatibility, wrecking many applications you might want to use.

We also must talk hardware because Apple locks MacOS to one kind of device -
Macs are obviously, incredibly overpriced.
Macs have mediocre processors and terrible performance/thermals (that has improved a lot with the M1).
Their Keyboards, Ports, upgradeability, and many other aspects are genuinely a joke, compared to basically any Laptop at all!

Now shall we also get to some myth-busting, shall we?
Because most of the reasons given for “Why is Mac better” are plain myths.

More Security? Windows has almost all the same security measures and dare I say, MORE!
macOS has its fair share of viruses that shook the Mac world.

macOS doesn’t need to restart for updates? Myth. It does.
Windows only has more updates which make it feel like that.
Otherwise, Windows and Mac don’t need a reboot for most updates and need a reboot for major updates.

macOS is faster?
If anything, Windows is only faster for Graphical Applications and otherwise, both are really close. So dare I say, Windows is in fact, faster (given the same hardware, of course)

Mac is better for coding?
WSL 2.0, built-in support for Android mobiles, better Laptops with better hardware, Dual-Boot Facility and all of those come together to laugh.
Mac as I said, doesn’t even have a package manager. Hell for being a “uNiX oS”

More stability? Well, arguable. Just because Apple releases Mac on like 2–3 devices doesn’t make it a feat. But importantly, Windows has also improved incredibly since the 2006 Vista Era.
BSODs are practically not a thing anymore unless you mess up big time. But also a small note of appreciation for BSODs which make diagnosing issues easier, unlike Mac, where it is much harder to diagnose if an issue does come up.

(reply to convo) Also, MacOS is really good for multimedia content, like Final Cut, Garageband, Keynote, etc.

There are comparable alternatives for Windows/Web, and Linux has some good stuff as well, but Apple knows how to do one and only one thing well: multimedia. And they're great at it.

I connected my Mac to an NTFS HDD a few weeks ago and it worked just fine. Try it out before you complain lol

On macOS Big Sur, Command Tabing once will take you to the last used app, and Command Tabbing again will take you back to the first app. Holding down command and pressing tab a few times cycles through all open apps with all the current open app icons in the center of the screen, JUST like Windows.

qloakonscratch wrote:

Fair point, but it's barely any effort to install homebrew.

qloakonscratch wrote:

They may be called “expensive” but some Macs are really worth the price, like the $999 M1 MacBook Air.

qloakonscratch wrote:

*ahem* Gatekeeper requires you to type in your password when you open an application from an unidentified developer - on Windows, clicking a button (you call that security???!?)

qloakonscratch wrote:

Windows has wayy more malware and viruses than macOS - what point are you trying to make from it? No OS is 100% secure but there is no evidence that macOS is more vulnerable than Windows.

qloakonscratch wrote:

So does Windows. Are you trying to make it look like Mac is worse by addressing it with myths? Why are you not speaking about Windows's horrible auto updates? And did you forget about the fact that Windows has ads and bloatware pre-installed?

On macOS you get basic apps like a document editor (Pages, you can import and export from/to .docx), presentation editor (Keynote, you can import and export from/to .pptx) and a spreadsheet editor (Numbers, you can import and export from/to .xlsx) WHEREAS Windows doesn't even come with these apps pre-installed (unless your laptop/desktop manufacturer adds it in) and instead gives you bloated games.

qloakonscratch wrote:

This depends on the hardware so it isn't a fair comparison. But there is no Windows laptop faster than the M1 MacBook Air cheaper than $999 (that comes with a good display, keyboard, great trackpad and speakers along with pre-installed productivity apps and no bloat).

wait a sec you got all of this from a random post on the internet that is so not fair. i came up with my own points to prove that macos isnt garbage. do your research before you post.

my dad works in a company based in the USA and almost everyone in his office uses a company-provided mac including him - it comes pre-installed with the necessary apps and my dad said it was easier and cheaper for the company to give out macs with pre-installed apps than to configure the same amount of windows laptops. most other companies also seem to be doing this.

TRUE STORY:
My cousin had online classes one day, he got up in the morning, booted up his laptop with Windows 10. There was an update to Windows available, and it decides to auto update, he missed his first class since it took too long, when it restarted, it got stuck, and it was stuck in an infinite loop of restarting for 4 hours. He couldn't take his classes for half the day, he then had to use his phone. A total of 7 hours later, he could do absolutely nothing to make it break out of the loop. He had to turn it off. He turned it on after a minute and a few files were corrupted (so some parts of the GUI was functioning while the others were non-existent, like control panel and the Run menu). He had to dig through 100s of sub-menus in order to find the system restore point. And then he finally was able to recover all his files. If it was a Mac, it wouldn't have auto updated. Also Macs can install system data files and security updates without restarting. Make sure this is checked in the “Advanced” section of Software Update in System Preferences.

I wouldn't say most, and it might be cheaper since a license for Windows server is $999, but is a one time license and is worth it to most businesses needing to manage more than just a few computers. It is plain easier on Windows to deploy and manage computers, MacOS server is a thing but haven't heard of many ways to make deployment images easily and it's just not as powerful as it is on Windows.
Nope, it isn't server, just normal macOS.

No I don't mean like a web application. I mean for network wide group policies and stuff for employees devices.
Well not just web applications, but I know most companies use a Linux based server, even Microsoft run azure and other Microsoft services on Linux. But as a desktop os it is easy to manage compared to macos and Linux and can be easily done so by using azure or a local windows domain.
Dont you think this is going too offtopic. -_-

Windows 10, at max, is 400 dollars, not including the price of the computer you run it on. If you buy a good computer to run Windows 10 on, it's about the same quality if not better.

On Windows, everything that could leak your privacy requires an administrator password, and some Windows 10 versions require that for opening an unidentified app. On Windows 10 S, you can't even open apps unless they're from the Microsoft Store.

They are evenly tied in malware since Windows 10 has more but has better ways to install anti-viruses (and easier) and MacOS has less malware but it's harder to install anti-viruses.

Actually research these topics and you'll find out these are actually misconceptualized a lot.

You're leaving out important details. Like, for one, the fact that auto-updates can be disabled.

Also, Microsoft Word is preinstalled onto the hardwood. So is Microsoft Excel. Advertisements are so the game developers can get more attention. And is there any proof that the games are bloated?

Actually, since Windows can run on any laptop, while Macs are limited, Windows is the obvious winner here. I have a Windows laptop that runs faster than the M1 and all the issues here are fixed.

wait a sec you got all of this from a random post on the internet that is so not fair. i came up with my own points to prove that macos isnt garbage. do your research before you post.
I could say the same for you. Before posting it here, I researched all of these points to the fullest extent and they are true.

This can be done with Windows as well. Also, it's hard to set up a website blocker to prevent NSFW content on work devices. It's not impossible but it's harder than it is on Windows.

This is a simple matter of him digging through his settings, and simply turning it off. It's not that hard to do.

The only reason why it is transparent is that it looks better than having an app bar with no transparency
When you put your mouse over the bar, the graphic effects are cleared
If it's in phone mode it looks dumb bad on a landscape screen at 4:3 proportions no offense

It's fairly simple to make it look desktop: move the topbar (with the clock on it) to the bottom, like most landscape desktops; hide the app bar; and make the app icons smaller so they look nice on the topbar and add a small background to them to prevent overlapping with notifications icons.
Or you could make it an option, like on chromebook it say set shelf position.
