Scratch Cloud Variables Being Completely Random and Not Working Sometimes?

I'm brand new to Scratch and have been messing around with cloud variables. Unless I've missed some large idea about these, I am stumped!

Basically, I am making a multiplayer snake game. Now the problem is that I have a cloud variable acting as a boolean to tell the other client that everybody has joined and the game is ready to start (this is needed for syncing up when the players start to move). For some reason though, the cloud variable REFUSES to update to the cloud and instead acts like a local variable! I am very confused and if there is some secret website that has details on the random quirks of cloud variables I would appreciate the link!

If a cloud variable is misbehaving, renaming it sometimes fixes it.

I can't look at the project now, but I'll try and take a look later if I remember.
