Chapter 1

Coronation

✎ Milly’s eyes fluttered open, her deep black eyes getting used to the rays of golden light shining from her clear window. She used to think that the sunlight from her window was real. But of course it wasn’t. It was something her mother set up to shut up Milly's groans about not being able to see the surface when she was little. How could something as magical and pure as sunlight even dare to shine where she lived? She climbed out of her white bed, which was embroidered with pink lilies, curling like veins over the sheets. It was the only cheerful thing she could think of in her kingdom.
Milly remembered that today was important. She quickly walked to her beautiful, dark wooden wardrobe, lined with gold, she thought to herself, like any other day, “I wish I could escape,” but she shook her head. ”I can’t. I have to keep the family legacy running through my veins. No matter how much I beg and beg, they won’t let me go.” She thought to herself angrily, but her mind always fought with her.
As she fell deeper into her troubles, she brought out a regal, soft gown, the outer rim smooth and transparent, while the dress itself, was dark and mysterious. There were pure white flowers stitched on the ends of the sleeves, and tiny golden orbs all around it, more and more colliding with each other at the ends of the dress. It came with a pale grey crown, and just like the dress, round silver orbs surrounding the bottom of the diadem. Milly carefully laid the fragile garb on her bed, and went to her dresser, to apply some “pure horror,” as Milly called it. She dabbed a sponge into some foundation, swiftly applied it onto her face, and grabbed the blush. Once she was done, she had to admit she had quite a talent.
Milly brushed her smooth, black hair, so dark that it could light up a room, and tied it up into an elegant bun. Once she was done with the preparations, she slipped on her gown, carefully placed the crown into her hair, and opened the door.
The first person she met on her way to the dining hall was her younger brother, who had just been crowned as the Soldier of their home last week. It was tradition for the brother to go first in getting crowned. Milly didn’t agree. “Hello, little sprout,” Milly said, and quickly walked down the hall. Her brother’s nickname came from a long time ago, when Milly was practicing a spell as a young girl. She had accidentally made a little sapling sprout onto her brother’s head instead of turning a rat into a sapling. Now everyone called him that.
Continuing down the hall, she peered around the rooms she was passing, checking for her best friend, Penny. Penny had promised to come, but there was no sign of her so far. Milly was especially excited for Penny to attend, since they were best friends since so long ago. They used to play and pretend they had special abilities. Penny was the alchemist. Milly was the blacksmith. The two of them even designed costumes for themselves! Penny’s costume was a two-piece dress that was a deep aqua color, with a white fluffy ring that hung above her head, as if she were an angel. It was a big joke, since they and everyone else that lived there were demons, so they all despised angels. Milly’s outfit, a bright yellow(because it reminded her of the sun), was a simple dress that faded into a deep orange, like a sunset. Dark red horns were arched at the sides of her head, like a replacement for her ears.
As Milly paced towards the dining room, she noticed how big of a deal it was. Everyone was congratulating her, saying things like, “Oh! I never imagined this day would come! Your coronation! How grand!” Milly quickly thanked everyone and finally entered the dining hall, which was filled with bustling servants, delicious food platters, and, of course, her mother.
“Dear!” her mother called when she saw Milly standing there. “We’ve been waiting for so long! What took you? We were about to send a search party for you!” her mother teased.
“Mother!” Milly groaned. “Does it really have to be such a big deal? I’m only being crowned!” Her mother looked shocked.
“I cannot believe you said that with a straight face! Come now, join the tailors in the corner over there! That dress looks absolutely hideous on you!”
“Thank you, mother,” Milly grumbled.
While the tailors fixed her dress (it was quite big for her) Milly practiced her best smile. She stepped on the royal balcony, the outer ring of the dress flowing behind her. Trying her best to look happy, she smiled at the cheering crowd below her. But she knew they weren’t happy. They were furious. They hated everything about Milly. She was able to make changes. Her whole family was. But Milly spoke the loudest. Ever if she mildly suggested for people to have better living conditions, or for people to be able to go to the surface, anyone else would have immediately been killed for it.
Nobody else could do that. Nobody else could protest, fight, or even dare to think of it. And that was why Milly knew she would never be loved. Not that demons could even love.
“People of our Nation! Let us celebrate the crowning of my daughter. All, rejoice!" There was a round of applause, and Milly tried not to think of the terrible kingdom she would be serving. Grubby children with rags as clothing, starving parents trying to keep their children alive, and so much worse.

“But, of course, we must start the process…of Milly finally growing her wings!” Her face went white as a sheet. Of course! I completely forgot! Milly thought to herself.
Part of any coronation in their kingdom included growing some sort of body part related to a demon. The first coronation, becoming prince or princess required growing wings, the second coronation, becoming queen or king, required growing horns, and finally, the last coronation, becoming Emperor or Empress, requires growing a deadly tail and a whip. That whip allows you to create illusions and to switch from looking like a human, to looking like a demon. It’s supposed to be a big deal and a exciting event, but it made Milly feel sick every time she thought of it. She didn’t want to have to deal with wings!
But it was too late. Milly’s mother and father had closed their eyes, and their hands were making out weird shapes, hanging in midair and glowing a bright white. A few seconds later, the shapes had formed their way into wings, delicate spikes at the tips.
The wings were a deep red color, and they frightened Milly. She didn’t want them to be stuck to her back for the rest of her life. Everybody was silent now, eagerly waiting for them to be shoved on her back. For her pain when it will happen. And when it did, it was just about the most painful feeling in her life. When the wings were finally formed into a dangerous murder weapon, her parents made a twisting motion with their fingers, and suddenly shoved them at Milly. The feeling when they speared her skin was more awful then she imagined. It was like the wings were tearing her entire body apart.
As she let out a loud yelp she had been holding in, she heard cheers and cackles down below.
When the pain had started to fade away, Milly sighed with relief. Her mother patted her on the back, and rose her hands in the air. “To our future queen!” the entire kingdom of Delophria cheered, but Milly was busy trying to fight back tears.
“Speech! Speech! Speech!” her mother started chanting, and the kingdom did the same. Her mother reached out her fingertips over the balcony, and millions of tiny shards of glass formed into a microphone. Milly took a deep breath, and stepped more in the view of the kingdom.
As Milly shakily put the microphone to her mouth, she froze. She didn’t know what to say. “I know you hate me”? “I hope to serve the kingdom well”? None of those sounded right. She just stood there, frozen in place, as if time had completely stopped. She knew everyone was loathing her at this moment.
Her mother glanced at her, a cruel glare on her face. She snatched the mic from Milly’s hands, making Milly flinch.
“Well, it seems like your princess has gotten off to a bad start,” her mother said. Some people chuckled, but not many. “Let us begin the festivities!” her mother cried, and everyone cheered and started shuffling to their homes for the traditional evening feast.
As the royal family walked to their dining room, Milly felt sick. She doubled over, clutching her stomach.
“Oh dear, what are we to do with you?” her mother sighed, not even bothering to help. “You showed weakness, dear, and there’s no changing that. You’ve sealed your fate.” And Milly knew her mother was absolutely right. ✎

His gaze was warm, though his eyes were a cold, chilling ice blue. I reached out to grab the back of his muted green suit, clutching onto him. Who is he, again? All I know is that he's the most beautiful person I've ever laid eyes on, beautiful, smooth caramel skin, and light curls tied into a ponytail. Deep magenta tattoos trace along the edge of his neck. His hands are gloved and stroke my face, and I see a red stain when he pulls back. Blood? No, it can't possibly be.

My thick comforter seizes hold of me as I wriggle to catch up with this beautiful, strange boy, who is walking away from me.
It feels like my fate is sealed when his figure fades into the distance–

“MINA! Jeez, how loud do I need to get to wake this girl up?” An exasperated voice. One I recognize.
My eyes stay shut. I don't want to forget my dream. It was too…I don't know how to describe it. Unreal? But also way too vivid at the same time?
“Minako Hayashi. Get out of bed now or witness your end.” A drawn out shing. Eyes wide open now, I leap out of bed to find my youngest sister, Atsuki, gazing at me with a sadistic grin.
“&*(^*(^&$%&*!!!! Don't ever do that again! You scared the * out of me!” I wipe the sweat from my bumpy forehead, grimacing. A pimple outbreak? Just two days before Homecoming?
"Ah-hem,“. Oh, sh-
”Watch your language. Have you even studied for the PSAT yet?“ My mother gives me the all-too-common yet still terrifying Asian mother eagle glare.
”Atsuki was the one threatening to kill me while I was still half asleep!“
”Well, at least you're not half asleep anymore, am I right?“ Atsuki shrugs nonchalantly.
I give her a death glare. ”Is that an apology? Your Japanese sucks, by the way.“ A lie, and we all know it, but it was the only insult I could think of.
Atsuki throws a pillow at me. ”Get up! Yuki's softball game is in, like, forty-five minutes."
I completely forgot. After shooing my mom and sister out of the room, insisting I had remembered, I got dressed in record time and stumbled down the stairs.
