I'm pretty sure this applies to any mob holding an item. Heck, even villagers when they're holding an item out as a trade offer, although I haven't tested that so I can't guarantee that it works.

Tested it, and the villagers didn't drop anything

but, if a villager is given a item in the main-hand slot via commands, e.g:

/summon villager ~ ~ ~ {HandItems:[{Count:1,id:"dirt"}],HandDropChances:[50.0f,0.0f]}

it may drop the item its holding, and it displays the same as them offering a trade.

fact fact: the creeper texture was pretty much created by overlaying the old leaves texture onto noise and adding a face.
