I stepped outside, peering up and watching Cassandra fly off. Now that I was a little closer, I could faintly see her, a blurred figure in the distance.
Just then, I saw a second blur fly right at her. Confused, I stared up, and panic rose in my throat. The figure had grabbed my sister’s arm and was trying to pull her away. I could see Cassandra fidgeting, trying to get loose. Cassandra’s faint shouts echoed, sounding distorted by distance, but the figure kept their grasp on her. Then, Cassandra and the figure had vanished into the clouds.
I screamed. What was happening? Had a mysterious figure just taken Cassandra? Who had it been?
I ran inside the house, grabbing my phone. Quickly, I dialed Mom’s number. Pick up, pick up, I chanted in my mind.
Seconds passed by, feeling like hours. The rings felt long and ominous. Finally, a voice sounded, but it wasn’t Mom; just the automated message and the hologram that always popped up.
I hung up, not even bothering to leave a message. Tears welled up in my eyes and slowly fell onto my cheeks. I knew someone had taken Cassandra. Cassandra’s screams and how she tried to get away proved it. But how was I supposed to get her back? I could barely fly! And Mom and Dad’s transport home was almost always late.
The doorbell rang. At first I didn’t open it. Then I remembered that Eva and Sophie were coming over. Maybe they would help. Eva was just like Cassandra: cheerful, confident, and smart. Sophie was sensitive, a little timid, but a good advice-giver.
“Come in,” I called. Eva opened the door, and Sophie followed behind.
“Serri! What’s wrong?” Eva asked, sounding startled.
“Um, well- Cassandra-” I took a deep breath, trying not to start crying again.
“Didn’t she get chosen to be on the Council? Seraphine, that’s a big achievement. Nothing to be sad about.”
“No, that’s not it. She was leaving, and then I saw a figure fly right at her. They grabbed her arm, and she was trying to get them off. Then, they both disappeared. I tried calling Mom, but she wouldn’t pick up.” I blinked and tried to swallow the lump in my throat.
Sophie gasped. “I’m so sorry… what are you going to do?”
I shook my head. “I don’t know.” I fiddled with my blue star necklace. Cassandra had given it to me for my ninth birthday. Cassandra was the sister who had helped me through everything, looked after me, taught me all she knew. There had to be something I could do to save her.
