What'll renaming it to “subscribers” do? And I don't see much of a problem here yet.

Exactly…
One word: Y o u t u b e.
That's actually 7 letters.

But renaming it to subscribers will hopefully put less focus on getting said subscribers, especially if you don't know who they are or how many you have.

Sorry, but I don't approve about this.
It would be a whole lot more helpful if you said why.
Please, -snip- out long posts, people

Bumping this topic because it still relevant.

I'm not sure if this has been suggested before, but I think we should probably hide the number of followers from anyone but the owner of the account.

I have to agree that scratch is treated like a social network a lot it really sucks, because that's not what scratch is, I think they should make scratch simpler in terms of commenting, following, stuff like that. But yeah, it really sucks how people care more about the social part of scratch than the coding, or even the projects. Also, I think there should be a easier way to get your project well-known, I feel like an under dog with my projects, in my opinion there about as good, (or even better) than some projects that are featured, but of course, that's my opinion. So yeah, scratch needs to become less like twitter, and more like a coding language, heck, soon there's going to be hashtags.

Space Breach is my featured project. Do you agree Scratch being treated like a social media is bad? Go here.

it's not like people never beg for “subscribers” either
But if it was changed to subs it would be like friends on 1.4. No stats or anything on how many you have. And you don't see people going around begging for friends do you?
you'd be surprised at just how many people are obsessed with getting lots of strangers for friends, like on Club Penguin

i have grown as a person. and ive grown, literally. none of my posts from before 2022 represent me accurately.

Personally, I see no reason in showing your follower count. All following does is let people see when you do something. Why should it be shown at all if showing it creates an atmosphere of jealousy?

I always thought followers and following should be changed to fans and fan of, respectively.

I'm not sure… ‘Fans’ would make people think they were famous, and it could make the competition between scratchers worse.

Well…

I agree completely that f4f needs to be taken care of. However, I don't think getting rid of follow numbers is the right way to go about it.

See, followers may cause jealousy, however, it also causes motivation. People often follow for good projects, correct? So if you want followers, you need to make projects, and good ones, sharing all your ideas. “Imagine, Program, Share”. We can introduce more ideas to our community if we add motivation in follows.

As for people leaving because of this, well, it's like recolors: Leave if you don't like it. If you really must go, you really must go. I'd advise against that, of course - I hate to see any Scratcher leave - but it is their choice.

I admit I use followers as a meter for “popularity”, and getting followers is part of my ambition. But, I believe my hope to get more followers is what taught me how to animate. I want(ed) followers, so I taught myself how to get them, and I've found out that I love what I do.

Hmm, very very good point! Followers can be motivational, thanks for bringing up that point!

I think subscribing would be a better word. yes I know it's from YouTube, but using a word from social media websites is worse in my opinion.

As a long time Scratcher, I have found new meaning to the name “Scratch”: for me, it means to “scratch that itch”, to come back again and again to realize new ideas in this toy language, even when I'm capable of creating my projects in real programming languages years later. It's a friend that helped me to pursue programming and get me to enjoy its fruit. I'm certain many others who have walked this path as well have grown fond of its importance in their life.

You think youtube isn't a social media website? You think scratch isn't a social media website?

no, I'm aware it is. 99.9999% of the internet is.
and no, I'm not implying Scratch is a social media. the following aspect relates to social media, but does not make all of Scratch a social network.
