Melvin Sams is the smartest kid in middle school, and he was only in sixth grade. As he faces the ups and downs(lots and lots of downs) of being a genius, sixth grade gets more and more interesting, with teachers he don't know and kids he unfortunately do.

Part 1: Dream
“Hi!”
Melvin ignored her, turning the page of his book.
“Hi. Are you okay?”
Melvin looked up at the blonde girl. She had blue eyes, pale white skin, freckles, her hair was back in a ponytail, she looked about the same height as Melvin, and she looked like she was gonna explode with happiness.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” Melvin asked. The dark boy was an avid reader, with narrow eyes,, and basically the opposite of this complex girl. Melvin was…”blank” to everyone else, with his voice, appearances, and personality.
“Watcha doing?” the new girl asked.
“Reading my book. It’s Karen Jay Nerr’s newest book in his series, called Dreamt.”
“Huh. Well, my name is Feenix. Feenix Navid Wilbur. What’s yours?”
“Uh, Melvin Winston Bane,”
Feenix held out her hand. “Nice to meet ya,” Melvin took it.
“You seem a bit…shy,” observed Feenix.
“Well, nobody really stops by while I’m reading on the bench,” Melvin said. “I’m usually alone here,”
“So that’s your average sixth grade recess?”
“Yep. It was also my average fifth grade recess, fourth grade recess, third grade recess, second grade recess, first grade recess…”
“No wonder you’re top of the class in reading and literacy.”
Melvin stood up. “Wait. I’m top of the class in literacy? I’m straight D minuses!”
“The person who’s closest to you has straight F pluses.”
Melvin gave her his “seriously” look. “Tony?”
“Yep.”
Melvin and Feenix fell silent. Something was in the air.
Melvin couldn’t identify it. “I’ve read every book about airplanes and rockets, but I don’t know what that is.”
“Let’s call it an RS.”
“An RS?”
“A rarely-seeable,”
“Let’s go with that.”
Suddenly, beams of light came from the “RS,” sucking the students in. But they seemed to pretend it wasn’t there until they got sucked in. Feenix spotted a girl almost identical to her, with just a little darker skin, who got caught and Feenix flinched.
“You know her?” Melvin guessed.
“Yep. My cousin.”
Melvin realized they’d get nowhere if they didn’t get somewhere else. He pulled her by the arm. “We’ll get caught too if we don’t hurry. Come on!”
Feenix seemed to snap out of a trance and followed him across the blacktop and to the exit. They stopped at the sidewalk beyond. Wait a second. That wasn’t concrete.
Melvin looked ahead. “That’s not the road.”
Feenix looked down. “Gah!” Melvin could’ve sworn she’d jumped half her height. And that was a lot for a girl at Lifebook School, the school they went to.
Melvin looked down, and saw lush grass. He turned around. “What just happened?” All he could see was dense forest all around.
When Feenix turned around, she almost fainted. Melvin’s heart was already racing, pushing against his chest. “Where’d the school go?” she asked.
A piece of paper was at their feet. “To the see-ers,” Melvin read.
“I think that’s us,” said Feenix.
“You are the only ones capable of defeating a threat to your world. You must find the ingredients for a secret recipe few know of. When you find people already caught, give them one drop of the potion. Then, they’ll be able to help you on your journey. Be careful, though. If you forget an ingredient, any ingredient, the ones who drink it will be petrified. And, if they drink too much, they will explode. Now, be off,”
Feenix smiled. “Let’s see if there’s something on the back. I’ve always wanted to save the world.”
Melvin turned the paper over reluctantly. A thought came to his head. “You know what? Why don’t we forget this parchment and find our way home? I see a street over there,”
Feenix tapped him on the shoulder. “Look!”
Melvin looked at the paper. It was drawing a picture of Melvin’s neighborhood.
“Isn’t that Goldhedge?” asked Feenix.
“You live there too?” Melvin’s neighborhood happened to be Goldhedge.
“Yep,” said Feenix. Then her eyes widened.
The picture was complete, and now it was alive. They could hear the screams, they could smell the smoke.
Then words started forming below the picture.
“Before you can shape the future, however, you must gather an immunity potion first, allowing you both three weeks without hunger or thirst. Then, the past will unfold, and the list of ingredients for the secret recipe will be revealed. The list of ingredients for immunity is below.” Melvin read. “The past will unfold?”
Feenix shrugged. “We have to get the ingredients first.”
“Okay, then. Let’s do that, even though this is pretty sudden.”
“Gah!” I woke up to the alarm clock. Another dream? Why?
