Plants vs. Zombies Official Topic!

Discuss everything PvZ here! The regular games, Heroes, Garden Warfare, Chinese spinoffs, and everything else as long as it has to do with Plants vs. Zombies! You can also share your ideas for Plants and Zombies here, as well as make fake almanac entries for them! So, here's to a new topic!

I'm currently planning a Plants vs. Zombies 3 game. It's going to be around-the-world themed, and it'll return Day and Night, along with Underwater from PvZ:O. Right now, I've made one plant in paint.net: Art Shroom. Her almanac entry will be right below her.

Art Shroom
Sun Cost: 175
Recharge: Sluggish
Sleeps during the day

Art Shroom never knew what to do as a child. She tried many things, but she always lost interest. But then, she tried art, and she was never the same.

Draws weak copies of plants that aren't in PvZ 3 that disappear after 30 seconds
- Common: Guacodile
- Uncommon: Phat Beet
- Rare: Ice Shroom

I remember coming up with a bunch of ideas with one of my friends, it was a thing

Some that I remember:

Colonel Kernel: Basically a stronger kernel pult, 200 sun
Grape Shot (before it was in 2): Shoots grapes in 3 directions (forwards, up at a 30° angle and down at a 30° angle), 150 sun
Something related to lemon: Shoots weak lemon seeds, and also acts like a Garlic when eaten: 75 sun
Mangrowve: Grows protective shoots in front of it, they also refresh if not eaten for long enough: something like 200 sun

Also 1 is way better than 2 imo

And all the world over, each nation's the same,
They've simply no notion of playing the game.
They argue with umpires, they cheer when they've won,
And they practice beforehand, which ruins the fun!

No, I won't go that easy.

Honestly though how could you prefer 2. 2 absolutely SUCKS.

Question:
How many columns of sunflowers do you typically plant

I do 2, or 3 columns of sun-shrooms
(is it bad that my sun production in night levels is usually better than in day levels?)

And all the world over, each nation's the same,
They've simply no notion of playing the game.

In PVZ, a single column of Sunflowers, or 2 columns of Sun-Shrooms.
In PVZ2, two columns of Sun-Shrooms. They're better when boosted!

0/10 not twin sunflower or moonflower

Ok, so since I have nothing better to do I'm going to rate the plants in PvZ 1 on a scale of 1 to 10.
I'll be rating them based off of their usefulness over the course of Adventure Mode and also in Survival Mode.

Prepare for long post (PLEASE SNIP THIS IF YOU ARE RESPONDING TO IT)

EDIT: Making revisions because some of these are actually terrible

Peashooter
What can you really say about Peashooter? It shoots peas at a mediocre fire rate that do mediocre damage for a mediocre sun cost. You're forced to use peashooters for the early part of the game, but you get much better offensive plants by the end of the Day levels.
4/10

Sunflower
There's nothing I can really say about Sunflower. It gives you sun.
10/10

Cherry Bomb
It's a pretty good instant plant. It's not too expensive and it clears out about half of a wave of zombies. Definitely worth using.
6/10

Wall-nut
Very helpful. It's cheap, it holds of zombies for a surprisingly long time, and you might as well bring it since you don't really have anything better yet.
7/10

Potato Mine
This is my favourite plant in the game. Why? Because if you blow up the first one or two zombies with this, you can get your sun production properly rolling. I bring this to every level that's not a night level.
10/10

Snow Pea
It's really great against single zombies: since it slows them to half speed it's basically like two peashooters. However, it doesn't work as well against clumps of zombies, and it takes twice as long to kill zombies as a repeater.
7/10

Chomper
bad
…ok, fine. Sure, it's an instakill, but no AoE and it takes forever to refresh. The place you would've planted it is better used for a different offensive plant, and its slot is better used for a Cherry Bomb.
1/10

Repeater
This is the most helpful plant in the game. It's your bread-and-butter firepower plant, really. In day levels you can easily kill the first zombie or two with a mine and you'll have enough sun production to reliably afford this afterwards. Once I unlock this I don't even bother with peashooters any more.
10/10

Puff-shroom
Necessity in all the night levels. It's free firepower to kill basic zombies until you get enough sun, and hey, it's free: why not plant them?
10/10

Sun-shroom
In night levels, this beats sunflower by FAR. Two sun-shrooms, even when small, produce 30 sun in the time a sunflower takes to produce 25. And once they grow? Oh boy, you've got some hefty production.
10/10

Fume-shroom
Eh… It's AoE, it hits through shields, it's fairly cheap, yeah, but it can't really be used in day levels, and it has limited range. It's *ok*.
6/10

Grave Buster
You need this in the night levels, but after that you can't use it again. Useful for about 5 levels in adventure mode, and in 2/10 survival modes.
5/10

Hypno-Shroom
It's pretty cheap, it lets a strong zombie attack others, it has a faster recharge than other instants, but it being a mushroom is kind of annoying. Plus sometimes a regular zombie gets to it first instead of the football zombie or buckethead you were TRYING to convert.
4/10

Scaredy-Shroom
Same damage as peashooter? Check.
25 sun cost? Check.
Random downside that never actually matters? Check.
It's night only, yeah, but when it's 25 DANG SUN there's no reason not to use it.
9/10

Ice-Shroom
Oh boy, freezes all zombies for a bit.
Hooray.
Stopping all the zombies can be useful but given that it only costs 50 less sun than a doom-shroom which is a screen nuke it's not particularly helpful.
2/10

Doom-Shroom
It's a screen nuke: what more can I say? You put it in the rightmost column on the last wave for a free pass. It's OK.
7/10

Lily Pad
It's necessary for 2/3 of the levels from here on out, and in Survival Endless.
10/10

Squash
A potato mine without a recharge. I know that I should use it more, but that 25 extra sun cost does actually do something in the early game, which is when I use potato mine the most. Still, it's a good instant against gargantuars.
7/10

Threepeater
The best thing that Threepeater ever does for you is getting you Pool's Closed.
1/10

Tangle Kelp
It's your free ticket to killing the first pool zombie that shows up. With my sort of investment strategy using expensive plants, that's invaluable.
9/10

Jalapeno
Just about the best instant in the game. It doesn't clear as many lanes as cherry bomb does, but you can use it really well against gargantuars that just threw their imp.
10/10

Spikeweed
It's decent, I guess. Yeah it does a lot of damage if you put it in front of a wall/tall-nut or a pumpkin, and it's AoE, but I dunno, I'd rather just bring another firepower plant or an instant or something.
7/10

Torchwood
Doubles your repeater's damage? Yes please.
9/10

Tall-nut
It's a better wall-nut. What else is there to say?
10/10

Sea-shroom
why does this have slow recharge
-1/10

Plantern
It needs to be WAY too far forwards if you want to reveal all the fog. And in a night level that's kinda annoying to do.
4/10

Cactus
You use it for the first level you get it in, then never anywhere else. It's just bad.
(Why doesn't it stretch up on roof levels to attack the zombies?)
3/10

Blover
It's Plantern and Cactus, but one plant, an instant, and good. Once you get some decent sun production, this makes the other two completely useless.
7/10

Split Pea
You need this to take out diggers, but it's pretty underwhelming elsewhere. Especially considering diggers are only really in Fog levels in Adventure mode.
4/10

Starfruit
Why would you even?
2/10

Pumpkin
Hey you! Yeah, you! Want a wall-nut but you don't want to put it up the front? Pumpkin is for you!
It's a necessity in Endless, but in Adventure mode it's not very necessary since Tall-nuts usually suffice.
9/10

Magnet-Shroom
You get to use this as a night plant for like two levels! Hooray!
It refreshes too slowly to be very useful. Just use a Torchwood or something in its place: would you rather remove a bucket head's helmet once every 10 or so seconds or would you rather just do double pea damage and kill the buckethead anyway?
4/10

Cabbage-Pult
You're gonna be using this for most of the Roof levels, so you better get used to it. Apart from that, it's peashooter that hits over shields and can't be torchwooded.
5/10

Flower Pot
Once again, you need this for the Roof levels. (And I guess it stalls zombies in other levels idk)
10/10

Kernel-Pult
It's like Cabbage-pult, except it trades off some damage for stun. It's OK, I guess?
5/10

Garlic
It's really useful for some strategies, but it's not very good in roof levels where you need flower pots for everything and Bungees exist. (Why do you get this in the one world where it's not very useful?)
7/10

Umbrella Leaf
It protects against catapults and bungees. It's incredibly helpful since catapults just LOVE to pick on your sunflowers and cripple your sun production.
9/10

Coffee Bean
The best thing coffee beans do is waking up gloom-shrooms. Magnets become too expensive to be worth it, as do the instants, and everything else is just completely worthless in all the day levels.
4/10

Marigold
Yay money! Yay money! Yay money! Oh wait, slow recharge.
It's good for grinding, but when you have Endless and the Zen Garden, do you really need that?
3/10

Melon-Pult
Great damage? Check.
Area of effect? Check.
Hits on roof levels? Check.
Get it super late? Che-wait that's not a good thing
8/10

Gatling Pea
If you use this without Torchwood, you're doing yourself a disservice. Even without Torchwood, though, this still gives some great DPS.
7/10

Twin Sunflower
You really need this for Endless, since it compacts your sun production. In Adventure, though, it's not really necessary.
6/10

Gloom-Shroom
Great for Garlic strategies! I do like using this in the second go of Adventure.
7/10

Spikerock
The pure fact that it can take multiple gargantuar hits makes this a must-use in Endless.
9/10

Gold Magnet
Great for grinding coins in Last Stand, but like I mentioned earlier, is that really necessary?
3/10

Cattail
250 sun for full lane coverage is definitely nice. Same damage as Repeater is nice. Popping balloons is nice. What's NOT nice is the stupid homing going after the wrong zombie half the time.
7/10

Winter Melon
YES.
You only get this after Adventure mode, but when you do, hoo boy.
This is kinda like a Snow Pea but good.
10/10

Cob Cannon
Also YES.
10/10

Imitater
Getting a repeat of a plant is AMAZING for getting quick defenses set up (e.g. imitating pumpkin in Survival). Another thing I like doing is imitating a Sun-shroom to get my sun going quicker in night levels. Unfortunately, pumpkins and instants are about all you're going to use this for.
8/10

(These aren't exactly in Almanac order, it's from my memory so yeah, if you disagree you're incorrect idk say something or something)

When I was 8 I effectively invented algebra using this game with a peashooter being worth “1” and going on from there (like frozen being “2” and a frozen + a pea shooter being a “4” since the frozen would do this: 2 x damage from all or now I would write it now 2(damage))

Game Over

I think the side objectives in Plants Vs Zombies 2 really bog down the experience at times. Some of them are a nice challenge while others are just… Bad. Side objectives are mostly fine in Ancient Egypt but get ready for when you play the Pirate and Wild West stages. You might get a good one every now and then, but I found a lot of them to be really frustrating.
I guess that's why they let you play the worlds in whatever order you want once you get the key ring, so you'll still have levels to play if you get stuck
