I Upgraded my PC. On my old one before I got a new one, i switched to a more optimised GNOME setup.

Oh, And there has been lots of inactivity here. I Think that is because the url changed to https://scratch.mit.edu/discuss/topic/91808/

Not natively, which is what I meant.
I'm pretty sure the ELF binary format was on the roadmap a time ago ;P

Anyways, https://github.com/swaywm/sway looks promising.

Why so much terminal padding?

Join the church of Emacs, where you can highlight everything as everything else.

(Still haven't figured out the bind to insert an E unfortunately.)

what if you're like me and you dont use a GUI because its a useless process that eats up system resources that could be used for something more important like a web server or a crypto miner?

I'm actually okay with cryptomining, As long as you use old hardware you still have and don't go out buying 50 1080TIs that could be better used.

I Will never forgive you and your GPU prices, Miners

Mtupid siners. I thought I could afford a nice 1060 (ironically with the Bitcoin I sold). Of course, people mine it when the price goes up.

I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/LInux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Anyways, here's a picture of my GNU/Linux: https://i.cubeupload.com/OXUKXE.png

If I may disagree, coz I do, the purpose of naming something is less about correctly attributing the components of said thing and more about creating simple terminology by which we can refer to that thing. Saying “GNU/Linux” effectively equates to saying “Windows/NT” or “MacOS/Unix”; the difference being that the Linux community chose to refer to its operating systems by its kernel. This doesn't discredit the framework that the GNU project initially layed out, but rather simplifies the language behind it to the term that I'd argue is easier to remember and contextually more recognizable (after all, calling it “Linux” had to start somewhere).

Unhypocritically implimenting this attribution-based naming scheme defeats the point of creating truncated terminology. Here's an excerpt from a book by Bryan Lunduke that I think sums this up excellently:

"Another thing that irks me: being adamant about calling it “GNU/Linux” is making a point that multiple projects and people contributed significantly to whatever Linux distro you are running. Now, I'm all for people and projects getting proper credit. But if we're going to feel compelled to name our Operating System by creating a large list of included project names (with lots of forward slashes) things would get … ridiculous in a heartbeat.
GNU/Linux/Qt/GTK/ncurses/wget/Firefox/GNOME/KDE/GEdit… on and on it goes. Until someone punches me in the nose. To cut all of those projects out of that name would be extremely disrespectful to them.
"

remember when i replied to the rms interjection as if it was a serious comment. what a fool am i.

oh & to keep this topic relevant, imma reccomend that y'all give solus os a run on your hardware. boots fast & has packages that are both stable and up to date.

but no, i mostly bumped this topic to laugh at my silly mistake.

Reviving this topic because it's fun.

Gentoo.

resloved/i3 - Gaps and Rounded Corners
tryone144/compton (feature/dual_kawase branch) - Slight Blur + Transparency
Polybar - Bar

Gentoo is a really lovely system and I heavily recommend it to literally everyone, especially beginners. The Gentoo Handbook explains everything in immense detail and leaves very little room to fail if you follow it properly.

This current system is using OpenRC (because systemd is an extra thing that does too much and I don't use any of its actual “features”) and also does not feature GRUB, or any other bootloaders beyond the UEFI. It boots very fast for that reason.

this is windows with an X server in a frameless window in the background of all the Windows windows. i have Arch Linux running on WSL displaying to the X server, running polybar and i3-gaps. using WSL 1 for this one (even though i'm on an insider build which supports WSL 2) because WSL 1 actually reports accurate CPU/memory stats of the host system (WSL 2 is essentially a VM.)

anyway yes i hate this setup too, and yes i actually use it, despite the screenshots looking like i just set this up, which i did

thisandagain pls explain
